Eagles sign former Colts CB Isaiah Rodgers Sr.

Isaiah Rodgers Sr. is getting a shot at redemption.

Former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, the latter team announced Monday.

Rodgers Sr. was the subject of one of the biggest storylines surrounding the team this offseason when he was suspended indefinitely for at least the entire 2023 season due to violations of the league’s gambling policy.

The team swiftly released Rodgers Sr. after the league’s investigation and punishment were concluded. With roster cuts coming down Tuesday, the Eagles made a move to add to add the former sixth-round pick.

Though former Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon is no longer the defensive coordinator with the Eagles—he’s now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals—Rodgers Sr. will have a familiar face in the building under head coach Nick Sirianni. They shared Rodgers Sr.’s rookie season together with the Colts in 2020.

The UMass product will spend the season on the reserve/suspended list for the 2023 season and will be eligible to apply for reinstatement once the regular season has concluded.

While the Colts move on with their trio of young cornerbacks, along with other intriguing names in the room, Rodgers Sr. will get a shot at redemption with one of the best teams in the NFL.

Colts vs. Bills: 5 things to know entering preseason Week 1

Here are five things to know as the Colts enter their first preseason game against the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts travel Saturday to Orchard Park, NY, for their first action in the Shane Steichen era. The Buffalo Bills host the Colts at Highmark Stadium for a preseason Week 1 game.

With so many new faces and schemes still being installed, there is a lot to work out, but perhaps the most exciting part: Colts football is back.

Here are the five things to know for Week 1 of the preseason:

5 free-agent CBs the Colts could sign to replace Isaiah Rodgers

Here a few veteran CBs the Colts could consider to replace Isaiah Rodgers.

The Indianapolis Colts cornerback room already had plenty of question marks entering the 2023 season, and now they’ll be without one of their projected starters.

Former sixth-round pick Isaiah Rodgers Sr. was poised to be one of the starting cornerbacks on the boundary entering the final year of his rookie deal, but he was waived following a suspension due to violating the league’s gambling policy.

The Colts used three of their 12 selections in the 2023 NFL draft at the cornerback position in the forms of Julius Brents (second round), Darius Rush (fifth round) and Jaylon Jones (seventh round). All have promising traits to be significant contributors.

But the Colts may need to look at the free-agent market to bring in some veteran experience considering Kenny Moore II is the only player in the room with more than four career starts in the NFL.

Without further ado, here are five veteran free-agent cornerbacks the Colts could consider signing to replace the recently departed Rodgers:

The Indianapolis Colts made a statement quickly following the suspension of Isaiah Rodgers Sr., opting to waive the young cornerback due to his violations of the league’s gambling policy.

Rodgers Sr. was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was set to make $2.7 million. He was also playing for the opportunity of a second contract either with the Colts or elsewhere.

By waiving Rodgers Sr., the Colts saved $2.7 million against the salary cap, bringing their cap space up to $25.2 million, according to Over The Cap. That number ranks fourth-highest in the NFL behind the Chicago Bears ($32 million), Arizona Cardinals ($26.7 million) and Carolina Panthers ($26.6 million).

There is also a chance the Colts look to recoup the $36,281 that remains as dead money from Rodgers’ prorated signing bonus, but that wouldn’t have much of an impact on their cap situation. And it isn’t clear how they feel about making that move.

It was a costly mistake for Rodgers Sr., whose career is now in jeopardy. He’s young enough for a team to take a shot on him if he proves he’s moved on from his mistake, but no team will consider it until after the 2023 season has concluded, which is when he can apply for reinstatement.

With this amount of cap space, the Colts will have plenty of money to get some potential contract extensions coming up for players like Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., Grover Stewart and Julian Blackmon.

How Twitter reacted to Colts waiving Isaiah Rodgers Sr.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the Colts waiving Isaiah Rodgers.

The Indianapolis Colts made a swift decision Thursday following the announcement that cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and defensive end Rashod Berry were suspended indefinitely due to violating the NFL’s gambling policy.

Both Rodgers Sr. and Berry were waived minutes after the league revealed the duo would be suspended for at least the 2023 season. It’s a costly mistake for both players, who are eligible to apply for reinstatement following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted to the news of the Colts parting ways with the young cornerback:

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. and defensive end Rashod Berry are being suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season due to violating the NFL’s gambling policy, the league announced Thursday.

Rodgers Sr. was a known subject in the league’s investigation and the expectation was that the suspension would be for the entire 2023 season. It turns out Berry was among a group of players suspended for betting on NFL games.

Rodgers Sr. and Berry are eligible to apply for reinstatement following the conclusion of the 2023 season, similar to the process in which former Atlanta Falcons and current Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended.

Per the release from the NFL on Thursday:

Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry of the Indianapolis Colts and free agent Demetrius Taylor are suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2023 season for betting on NFL games in the 2022 season. These players may petition for reinstatement at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility.

Along with these three players, Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended six games by the NFL for making non-NFL bets from the team facility.

6 Colts who need to step up amid Isaiah Rodgers Sr. suspension

These Colts will need to step up with Isaiah Rodgers expected to be suspended.

The Indianapolis Colts are betting that a young group of players to compete for the starting outside cornerback spots, and that battle, unfortunately, got thinner due to Isaiah Rodgers Sr. being expected to receive a season-long suspension.

The news was first reported Wednesday by ESPN that Rodgers Sr., along with other NFL players, are expected to receive a suspension due to violations of the league’s gambling policy.

Because of the expected suspension, Kenny Moore II is the only corner on the roster that has played more than 438 defensive snaps.

Gus Bradley is going to need his young group of players to step up and take advantage of the opportunity in front of them.

Here are six players who will be looking to fill Rodgers Sr. void in the defense:

How Isaiah Rodgers’ suspension impacts Colts

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr. is expected to receive a season-long suspension from the league for violating the NFL’s policy on gambling.

The news was handed down Wednesday in response to an investigation that raised concerns that Rodgers was part of numerous bets on NFL games, reportedly including some that involved the team.

The expected unavailability of Rodgers casts serious doubt on the strength of the Colts’ cornerback unit. Despite returning veteran Kenny Moore II, the group is fragile regarding experience.

Several players are limited in starting experience, instead having niche skillsets related to special teams. Not to mention, the remaining unit is exceptionally young including this year’s draft class haul of Julius Brents, Jaylon Jones, and Darius Rush.

If the team chooses not to sign a veteran cornerback to replace Rodgers, fifth-round pick Darius Rush could get the nod to start in his place. Rush has elite athleticism with long arms that could help his assimilation into the role. However, asking Rush and several rookies to start in the secondary will be very challenging for the Colts and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.

What could help these young players is a quick, explosive pass rush that can disrupt games and stop passing attacks. The team’s 11th-ranked defense, which produced 44 sacks and a pressure rate of 22% in 2022, will need to step up again to help mitigate the secondary youth. Additionally, this could be a prime opportunity for Kenny Moore to shine.

Before the beginning of last season, he wanted a new contract that matched his belief that not only was he the best slot corner in the NFL, but one of the best in the league, period. This is his chance to prove that as he enters his second year in Bradley’s system. Elite play on the field and accompanying mentorship could help lessen the weight of Rodgers’s absence.

The most important thing for fans to remember is that this will continue to be fluid. The coaching staff will continue to tweak the lineup based on production, matchups, and specific packages. Patience is needed and warranted.

5 losers from the Colts offseason workout program

After taking a look at the winners, here are five losers from the Colts’ offseason workouts.

The Indianapolis Colts have roughly one month until the arrival of training camp, which is when the real competition for the final roster spots will take place.

Though we should be careful about how much information we take seriously during the spring practices, it never hurts to monitor the players who stand out in OTAs and minicamp. The same goes for players who failed to make strong impressions. Jobs are not won in the spring, but the foundation for the competitions is being laid out.

We took a look at the winners from the offseason program Sunday. Though the term “loser” is a bit harsh, it has to do with their status entering training camp. They all seem like pretty solid dudes and all will have a chance to turn their fortunes around at training camp.

Still, it’s time to take a look at five Colts who failed to make a positive impression during the spring workouts.
