LAS VEGAS – Although UFC bantamweight [autotag]Terrance Mitchell[/autotag] has a lot of respect for Raul Rosas Jr., he will be looking to completely stop the hype at Noche UFC.

The bantamweight showdown serves as the penultimate bout of the event at T-Mobile Arena, which is expected to be filled with Mexican fans in celebration of Mexican Independence Day. Rosas Jr. (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will have the support of the crowd, but Mitchell (14-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) won’t be deterred by that, or the age gap between them.

“He’s 18, I think 19 now, youngest guy on the roster – I respect it a lot,” Mitchell told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “I’ve been working my ass off to get here and to be here. So, I respect it that he’s already here, but I’m looking to take all his fans, all his shine. I think he has a bright future ahead of him, but I’m looking to stop the train, right here, right now.

Both fighters will be looking to rebound from losses; Mitchell to Cameron Saaiman in July and Rosas Jr. to Christian Rodriguez in April. For Mitchell, he took his last fight on short notice, but despite the setback against another young rising star, he took the loss as a moment to learn.

On Saturday, Mitchell can’t wait to show off what he’s been working on against an opponent he feels he has an edge on in all departments.

“I think I bring a lot more power than he’s used to,” Mitchell said. “I think when I touch him, it’s going to be different. When we’re wrestling he’s going to be like, ‘Man, this guy’s strong.’ So I’m looking to really just dominate the fight, win the fight every which way.”

49ers sign CB Anthony Averett, place CB Terrance Mitchell on IR

The #49ers made a roster move by adding a veteran CB to replace one they put on IR.

The 49ers on Thursday announced a pair of corresponding roster moves. They placed veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell on injured reserve, and signed veteran CB Anthony Averett to fill the vacancy on the roster.

Averett played his college football at Alabama and joined the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in the 2018 draft. He spent four years in Baltimore before joining the Raiders last season. In five years he’s played in 57 games with 27 starts and racked up 114 tackles, three interceptions and 23 pass breakups. All three of his INTs came in the 2021 campaign when he played and started a career-high 14 games for Baltimore.

With the Raiders last season Averett started six of the seven games he played and posted 13 tackles with one pass breakup. His season was cut short by a pair of stints on IR.

San Francisco added Mitchell on July 25 when they started camp. The nature of his injury is unknown, but his placement on IR in early August means he’s ineligible to suit up for the 49ers this year even if his injury is not season-ending.

49ers sign former Titans CB Terrance Mitchell

Former Titans CB Terrance Mitchell has found a new home with the 49ers.

After having a disastrous start to his Tennessee Titans tenure, cornerback Terrance Mitchell settled in relatively nicely for the team’s defense.

The veteran corner wasn’t a standout or anything of that nature, but Mitchell provided a somewhat reliable presence on the backend whenever his number was called.

Mitchell also happened to make his fair share of positive plays in his limited role, totaling 39 tackles, four passes defended, one forced fumble, and one interception.

Despite his ugly early season struggles, the Oregon product appears to have shown enough promise in Tennessee that he has now been given a shot to extend his NFL career after he signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers recently.

Mitchell is coming off a season where he allowed a completion percentage of 63.6 percent (35-of-55), and a quarterback rating of 94.5 when targeted in coverage.

The former Titans corner finished his one season in Tennessee with a respectable overall grade of 61.2, per Pro Football Focus.

Mitchell now shifts his focus on trying to find his way onto the Niners’ opening day roster.

49ers roster moves: CB Terrance Mitchell signed, P Mitch Wishnowsky to NFI list

The #49ers added a new CB who has some familiarity with DC Steve Wilks.

The 49ers on Tuesday officially announced the placement of punter Mitch Wishnowsky on the non-football injury list. They also announced the addition of cornerback Terrance Mitchell to their 90-man roster.

Wishnowsky is dealing with a back injury according to general manager John Lynch. The 31-year-old punter suffered the injury while lifting weights away from the team facility. He won’t count against a roster spot while he’s on the NFI, and the team can activate him any time. Lynch said the club isn’t concerned about a long-term back issue for their punter and won’t be adding a replacement to their offseason roster.

Mitchell, 31, joins a cornerback group that’s already dealing with an injury. Rookie CB Darrell Luter Jr. has a bone bruise in his leg that will keep him out for a few weeks per Lynch.

The new 49ers CB was a seventh-round pick of the Cowboys in the 2014 draft. He’s played in 94 games across his eight NFL seasons with the Cowboys, Bears, Chiefs, Browns, Texans and Titans. In those 94 games (56 starts) Mitchell has 305 tackles,  nine interceptions, 63 pass breakups and 10 forced fumbles. His time with the Browns overlapped with Steve Wilks’ one season as their defensive coordinator in 2019.

Last year he started five of the 11 games he played in Tennessee and tallied one interception with four pass breakups to go along with his 39 tackles.

It’s not out of the question Mitchell could contend for a roster spot thanks to his familiarity with Wilks and a lack of certainty on the back end of the depth chart.

12 remaining free-agent cornerbacks the Panthers could still sign

Here are 12 notable cornerbacks who are still available in free agency:

On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Field Yates suggested that the Carolina Panthers add some cornerback depth before the offseason comes to an end. But let’s be honest, we really didn’t need a reminder.

Between injuries to starters Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson as well as the lack of reliable reinforcements behind them, the Panthers are still quite thin at the position. So, if they end up dipping back into the free-agent market this summer, here are 12 corners that could get a call.

Titans’ Caleb Farley ‘not happy’ with lack of playing time in Week 3

Titans CB Caleb Farley is obviously not happy with the lack of playing time he saw in Week 3.

Tennessee Titans cornerback Caleb Farley is having a very rough start to his second season after seeing his rookie campaign cut short due to a torn ACL.

Farley was expected to grab the starting spot opposite Kristian Fulton going into the offseason but was somewhat unexpectedly beaten out by rookie cornerback, Roger McCreary.

Then, we expected to see Farley grab a role as the extra defensive back in sub-packages, but that didn’t happen, either.

Clinging to his backup role, Farley had a great opportunity to show his stuff in Week 2 with Fulton out, but he failed to answer the bell in what was a horrific showing for the entire team.

The 2021 first-round pick slipped even further in Week 3, when he was passed over for playing time in favor of veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who had just joined the team mid-week.

Mitchell was bad and his poor performance made Farley, who saw just one snap on defense, look even worse.

As bad as things are for the Virginia Tech product, he remains confident in himself and is saying all the right things, although he isn’t happy with his limited non-existent role.

“I’m confident,” Farley said, per John Glennon of Sports Illustrated. “I mean, I’m not happy with it, but I’m here to work hard and do what I can do to put myself in position to help this team win. When the opportunity comes, whenever they make that decision or that call, it’s my job to rise to the occasion and do the best I can to come in and execute.”

“You’ve just got to put your head down and do what’s best for the team, put the team first,” Farley added. “That’s the decision that was made, and I stick behind it because guys make decisions that are best for the team.”

While the Titans being down on Farley is understandable, he has to get more of a look than what he’s gotten thus far, which amounts to two games with 17 snaps or less, including his one-snap game in Week 3.

As Fulton pointed out earlier this week, reps are important for a young player to gain confidence, and that’s especially true for Farley in the first season back from a knee injury that can often take a year to fully come back from.

“It’s a process to get out there and get comfortable. I just try to share that with [Farley]. Once he gets those game reps, I feel like he’ll be good, but I just have to let him know that it’s a process,” Fulton said, per AtoZ Sports Nashville’s Sam Phalen.

“This is the NFL,” he added. “Everybody comes into the league confident in their abilities, but once you don’t get those reps out there, you can lose confidence in yourself.”

Head coach Mike Vrabel hinted earlier in the week that more changes could be coming to the revolving door that has been the Titans’ secondary depth.

We’ll see if Farley getting more playing time is one of those changes.

Titans’ Terrance Mitchell takes accountability for Week 3 showing

Titans CB Terrance Mitchell isn’t making excuses for his poor Week 3 showing.

Tennessee Titans cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who was signed to the team’s active roster in the week leading up to Week 3, made his debut with the team on Sunday, but things didn’t go so well.

Mitchell, who surprisingly saw snaps over 2021 first-round pick and fellow cornerback Caleb Farley, allowed six receptions on eight targets for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Before practice on Wednesday, Mitchell didn’t make any excuses for how poorly he performed

“I felt ready, I just didn’t take care of business on my end. But, new week, new opportunities, and I just got to keep working and try to get better,” Mitchell said, per ESPN’s Turron Davenport.

“For me, that was all self-inflicted on my own self, so I just got to take care of my business, make my plays and just move forward,” he added.

Whether or not he has that opportunity after what we saw in Week 3 remains to be seen.

Earlier in the week, head coach Mike Vrabel hinted more changes could be coming in the secondary, although he didn’t say exactly what those changes would look like.

“That’s just the approach that we took last week and prepared [Mitchell],” Vrabel said after the game. “We will have to see what it looks like this week. Every week is a different week. We have got to find some guys that can go out there, cover, challenge and compete. We’ll keep searching and we’ve got some guys here that we will give another look to this week.”

Titans’ Mike Vrabel talks playing Terrance Mitchell over Caleb Farley

Vrabel hinted more changes could be coming at CB this week, but didn’t say if they include more playing time for Farley.

One of the more head-turning decisions of the Tennessee Titans’ Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders came on defense, where the Titans opted to roll with Terrance Mitchell over Caleb Farley when they needed an extra defensive back.

Mitchell, who just joined the team’s active roster in the middle of the week, went on to have a terrible game. He surrendered six receptions on eight targets for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Farley didn’t see a single defensive snap until late in the fourth quarter when Kristian Fulton got hurt. In fact, he had more snaps on special teams (seven) than he did on defense (one).

On Monday, head coach Mike Vrabel revealed the team decided Mitchell was the route they wanted to go in Week 3. He also hinted that more changes could be coming at cornerback, although wouldn’t say if those changes included more playing time for Farley.

“That’s just the approach that we took last week and prepared [Mitchell],” Vrabel said after the game. “We will have to see what it looks like this week. Every week is a different week. We have got to find some guys that can go out there, cover, challenge and compete. We’ll keep searching and we’ve got some guys here that we will give another look to this week.

“We are just trying to get guys ready to play in the game, and just trying to get everybody ready on a short turnaround after what happened in Buffalo,” Vrabel added. “We were just getting back and making sure that we decided who we were going to go with and then get them ready with the limited amount of reps. We will evaluate this week.”

The fact that the Titans thought Mitchell gave them a better chance to win says a lot about what the team thinks of its 2021 first-round pick, who is on pace to be general manager Jon Robinson’s latest Day 1 whiff.

Report: Titans signing CB Terrance Mitchell off Pats’ practice squad

The Titans are reportedly making their second addition of the day to their secondary.

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly making yet another addition to their secondary, the second of the day.

According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Titans are inking cornerback Terrance Mitchell off the New England Patriots’ practice squad. Mitchell will join Tennessee’s active roster.

Earlier in the day, Schultz reported that the Titans were also signing safety Andrew Adams off the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad.

A 2014 seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, Mitchell has appeared in 83 games (51 starts) over seven seasons. He spent the 2021 campaign with the Houston Texans, starting in 13 of 14 games.

The addition of two players to the secondary could mean there are more injuries the team is dealing with in the group, and/or it could mean the Titans simply aren’t happy with what they currently have, which would come as no surprise after what we saw in Week 2.

Tennessee currently has safety A.J. Moore and cornerback Elijah Molden on injured reserve, with the former already ruled out for the rest of 2022.

Adding to those two, the Titans saw three more defensive backs get hurt in Week 2, including defensive backs Lonnie Johnson, Ugo Amadi and Chris Jackson. The extent of those injuries remains unknown.

The injury hits just keep coming for the Titans, who reportedly lost left tackle Taylor Lewan and running back Trenton Cannon for the season during the Week 2 contest against the Bills.

We’ll know more on the injury front when the Titans release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday.
