Falcons TE Charlie Woerner will wear uniform No. 89 this season in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons made arguably the biggest move of any team in free agency by signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins but the team’s other additions mostly flew under the radar.

The Falcons signed former 49ers tight end Charlie Woerner to a three-year, $12 million contract, filling the void left by Jonnu Smith. Woerner is someone head coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson faced several times while they were with the Rams.

The team’s new No. 2 tight end is set to wear the No. 89 this season in Atlanta.

Woerner, 26, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Georgia. The fourth-year tight hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season. Woerner has caught 11 of 15 career targets for 120 receiving yards.

The Falcons released Jonnu Smith earlier in the offseason in a move that saved $6.5 million in salary cap space. Smith finished the 2023 season with 50 catches for 582 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Other recent Falcons offseason additions, including wide receivers Darnell Mooney and Rondale Moore, were also assigned jersey numbers for the 2024 season. Mooney will wear the No. 1 while Moore will reportedly wear the No. 9.

But the starting lineup won’t look much different from what fans saw at the start of the season, except for Andrus Peat filling in at left tackle after Trevor Penning was benched. Alvin Kamara has returned from suspension to take his place on top of the running backs rotation, and they’ve signed quarterback Jake Luton for the next three games while Derek Carr nurses an injured throwing shoulder. Multiple players were added to the practice squad and there are several new jersey numbers to pick up on.

8 Broncos players have changed their jersey numbers

If KJ Hamler returns to the Broncos later this year, he will need a new jersey number: CB Tremon Smith has switched to No. 1.

Several Denver Broncos changed their jersey numbers on Monday.

Punter Riley Dixon, who wore No. 19 in preseason, switched to No. 9. Broncos receiver Marvin Mims, who wore No. 83 in preseason, then switched to No. 19.

Cornerback Tremon Smith also switched to No. 1 after wearing No. 23 in preseason. Cornerback Fabian Moreau, who wore No. 36 this summer, then switched to No. 23 (running back Tyler Badie remains No. 36).

Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, who previously wore No. 35, now wears No. 29. Defensive back Devon Key, who wore No. 38 in preseason, now wears No. 26 (running back Jaleel McLaughlin still wears No. 38).

Quarterback Ben DiNucci, who wore No. 6 this summer, now wears No. 11 (safety P.J. Locke still wears No. 6).

New practice squad players also received their numbers: WR Phillip Dorsett (No. 13), ILB Ben Niemann (No. 57), TE Lucas Krull (No. 85) and WR David Sills (No. 87).

Additionally, defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster is wearing No. 96. That’s not a new change — Lancaster switched from No. 62 to No. 96 after defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike was suspended indefinitely for gambling.

During the offseason, players are allowed to share numbers if they play on different sides of the ball (such as McLaughlin and Key both wearing No. 38 in preseason). With the regular season now right around the corner, though, numbers 0-99 can only be worn once on the 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad.

Jersey numbers for the Lions latest player additions

The latest player additions for the Detroit Lions have decided on their jersey numbers, as well as number switches from last season.

The Detroit Lions have finalized their 53-man roster and practice squad, but as we all know, this could change at any moment. The roster now includes a mix of new and old players, and we’re excited to see what jersey numbers they’ll be wearing this season. Some players have even decided to switch their numbers from last year.

Below is the list of jersey numbers for the new players, as well as the players who have switched their numbers for this season.

Teddy Bridgewater takes over No. 10, previously held by Nate Sudfeld

Jerry Jacobs previously was 39 but switched to No. 23.

Steven Gilmore switched to No. 24 after sporting 36 through the preseason

Michael Badgley goes back to No. 17, which he held last season.

David Blough will be No. 18 this year. He previously was 10 when he was with the Lions before.

Zonovan Knight will hold No. 28 after the departure of Jermar Jefferson

Raymond Johnson will be No. 52 after the release of Christian Covington

Michael Niese will take over No. 62 with the departure of Ryan Swoboda

Darice Fountain will hold No. 84, which was previously held by Avery Davis

Quinton Bohanna will be No. 90 after Cory Durden was waived

Teddy Bridgewater says he’ll wear No. 50 for the Lions

Bridgewater is currently listed as No. 50 and the veteran QB seems to like it

After Friday night’s preseason win over the New York Giants, it was hard to miss a new face in the Lions locker room. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who signed too late in the week to play or even practice, stood tall in a white graphic t-shirt and a big smile on his face.

When we approached Bridgewater after wrapping up media time with Maurice Alexander, the veteran QB playfully deferred from answering any questions.

“I don’t have a number yet, can’t talk,” he said with a wry smile.

Bridgewater participated in his first practice on Monday, rocking a red jersey with no number on it. He’s now listed on the team’s roster as wearing No. 50.

It’s not exactly a number associated with a quarterback, but Bridgewater is embracing the unusual. He was asked after his first practice what number he will wear in Detroit.

“I’m going to wear No. 50,” Bridgewater said through laughter. “I’m going to wear 50, man.”

There is some reasoning behind the odd number: none of the traditional QB numbers are available. Every jersey between 0 and 19, the only numbers allowed by the league for a QB, is either already taken by an active player or retired. Defensive players occupy 1,2,4 and 6 right now, so they are the only numbers that Bridgewater would be allowed to double up on during the preseason.

We’ll see if Bridgewater can roll with the exotic No. 50 jersey when the Lions play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday after two days of joint practices in Allen Park later this week.

Matt Judon reacts to Patriots rookie punter getting his jersey number

There’s a new No. 9 in New England, and Matt Judon’s reaction is priceless.

New England Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon is no longer the only player in the building with a No. 9 jersey.

The star pass-rusher now shares the number with rookie punter Bryce Baringer. On Thursday, the Patriots revealed all of their rookie jersey numbers, and Baringer became the second punter in two years to be given the No. 9 jersey in the preseason.

Last year, it was undrafted rookie punter Jake Julien that shared the same number as Judon. Julien didn’t stick on the roster and eventually landed in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks.

After seeing the number reveal, Judon hopped on social media and reacted, along with wide receiver DeVante Parker.

The twinning with No. 9 will be short-lived when the actual season begins, and the numbers are no longer allowed to be the same.

Baringer is locked into a positional battle with veteran punter Corliss Waitman. It’s hard seeing the rookie fail to make the roster considering the Patriots gave up a sixth-round draft pick for him. And from the looks of his early work in training camp, he is inching his way towards being a roster lock.
