Only 3 teams have spent less than the Commanders over the past 3 seasons

Washington has been cheap for years. That will change under Josh Harris in a number of areas.

Remember when the offseason was the Super Bowl for Washington? Back then, former owner Daniel Snyder would fire up his jet and bring some of the top free agents to Washington.

That strategy always backfired. When Bruce Allen took over as Washington’s president in 2010, the franchise changed how it operated in free agency.

For years, the franchise looked for cheap free agents on short-term deals, and the results were as predicted. When Washington did make a splash, such as Josh Norman or Landon Collins, it didn’t necessarily work out either.

That previous cheapness mainly persisted when Ron Rivera took over as coach and defacto GM in 2020. One positive from Rivera’s era was that he did manage to extend some of Washington’s top players.

But Rivera struck out in free agency, too, for the most part, particularly over the last three years.

When the Commanders did spend on outside free agents, they didn’t spend wisely. Overall, though, Washington has been cheap over the past three years, as only three teams have spent less cash than the Commanders, according to Spotrac.

Rivera received much of the blame for that, which is fair. However, Snyder’s cash flow was an issue and played a more significant role in Washington’s lack of aggressiveness in free agency.

Regardless, the Commanders won 26 games in four years under Rivera.

Snyder is gone now, and Allen has been gone for five years. Josh Harris is the new owner, and Adam Peters is the new GM. While the Commanders will primarily be built through the NFL draft, they will use free agency to supplement the roster instead of building the team.

Snyder was known for his cheapness over the years, not investing in FedEx Field or the team’s headquarters in Ashburn. Harris, who didn’t take over until July, has already earmarked $75 million in upgrades at FedEx Field and in Ashburn. Harris has also committed to analytics and sports science.

Times have indeed changed for the Commanders.

10 free agent/practice squad safeties Broncos could sign after Kareem Jackson suspension

With Kareem Jackson suspended and P.J. Locke injured, the Broncos should add more depth at safety this week.

After losing Kareem Jackson to a suspension for the second time this season, the Denver Broncos are suddenly thin at safety.

P.J. Locke filled in at strong safety during Jackson’s two-game suspension earlier this year, but Locke is now dealing with an ankle injury. Even if Locke is able to play against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the Broncos will want to add more depth at the position.

Delarrin Turner-Yell has been good on special teams this season, but he’s been a huge liability in the secondary. Denver can’t afford to lean on Turner-Yell if Locke misses any games during Jackson’s suspension, and rookie JL Skinner has been inactive for all but one game this year.

To add more depth at safety, the Broncos should look to the free agent market. In addition to considering street free agents, Denver could also sign a player off another team’s practice squad. Here’s a quick list of 10 safeties the Broncos might consider signing.

Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 26 days

We are just 26 days away from the start of Alabama football’s 2023 season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 26 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

With 26 days remaining, we take a look at one of the best defensive backs of the Coach Saban era, [autotag]Landon Collins[/autotag].

Collins was a star for the Tide defense from 2012-14 where he accumulated 184 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and five interceptions.

Collins is currently a member of the New York Giants and is entering his ninth season in the NFL.

Jam Miller, a sophomore running back and rising star for the Tide, currently wears No. 26 for Alabama.

How much dead money are the Commanders carrying on the salary cap in 2023?

The Commanders have five players with dead cap hits in 2023.

The Washington Commanders currently have $11.5 million in available salary cap space — per Over the Cap — since the team designated Chase Roullier as a post-June 1 cut.

That gives the Commanders plenty of room to sign first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes and second-round pick Quan Martin while also perhaps adding another veteran on the offensive line or at linebacker. Washington has signed the remainder of its draft class.

The Commanders will also add more to their cap when they eventually release guard Andrew Norwell. While that’s not official, the team can’t cut Norwell now because he is injured.

A part of Washington’s cap space for 2023 is occupied by players no longer on the roster. In total, the Commanders are carrying over $23 million in dead money on the salary cap in 2023.

Here are those five players and their cap hits in 2023.

Former Alabama DB Brian Branch set to visit the New York Giants

New York Giants expressing in interest in projected first-round safety Brian Branch

With the NFL draft about a week away, teams are conducting final interviews with potential prospects. Franchises do their best to hide their interest in prospects so that other teams can’t steal their target player, but sometimes the cat still gets out of the bag.

Today, the New York Giants will be hosting former Alabama defensive [autotag]Brian Branch[/autotag] who is projected to be the first safety taken in the upcoming draft. The Giants currently hold the 25th selection in the draft and have expressed increasing interest in Branch who is a projected first-round selection.

Giants head coach, [autotag]Brian Daboll[/autotag], served as an offensive coordinator for the Tide in 2017 before moving to the Buffalo Bills for the same position. Even though Branch and Daboll didn’t overlap during their time in Tuscaloosa, Daboll is well aware of the quality of players Nick Saban develops for the NFL.

The Giants have had a lot of success with former Crimson Tide defensive backs in the past few years such as Xavier McKinney and Landon Collins. Branch would be no different as he will be ready to play day one.

The Philadelphia Eagles, an NFC East rival of the Giants, have also brought in Branch for interviews and expressed interest in him. The Eagles have two first round selections, No. 10 overall and No. 30 overall.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor Brian Branch’s draft stock as well as other former Crimson Tide player.

5 remaining Giants free agents who deserve to be re-signed or sign elsewhere

The New York Giants have 10 remaining unsigned free agents and these five deserve to be re-signed or given an opportunity elsewhere.

The first week of free agency has come and gone across the NFL, and the New York Giants have been quite busy.

In addition to re-signing several of their own in-house free agents, general manager Joe Schoen has also made a few splashes elsewhere. He’s added quality depth at positions of need and acquired tight end Darren Waller via trade.

But 10 Giants remain unsigned. They are as follows:

  • LB/S Landon Collins
  • DL Justin Ellis
  • OL Jon Feliciano
  • WR Richie James
  • LB/S Tony Jefferson
  • WR Marcus Johnson
  • CB Fabian Moreau
  • LB Jaylon Smith
  • DL Nick Williams
  • LB Oshane Ximines

There are some notable names in that group and five of them absolutely deserve to either be re-signed or signed elsewhere.

Let’s take a look at those players.

The 10 best Louisiana born players who didn’t play at LSU

Here are 10 of the best Louisiana-native players this century who left the state for college.

LSU does a good job at keeping talent in-state.

As the only Power Five program in Louisiana, LSU has a unique advantage shared by only a few other major programs. It hasn’t been perfect, though. There have been big misses.

Some of these players LSU tried to recruit and struck out. Others flew under LSU’s radar but went on to be NFL stars.

Here, we’re going to look at the 10 best Louisiana-born players this century that didn’t don the purple and gold. We begin with a big-name quarterback who ended up at a division rival.

What salary cap space is available for the Commanders in 2023?

How much cap space do the Commanders have in 2023?

How responsibly have the Commanders been managing the salary cap, moving into next season?

In comparison with other NFL teams, how do the Commanders rank, involving available cap space for next season?

The agreement between the NFL and its players regarding the amount of money a team can spend on player contracts is the NFL salary cap.

The Commanders and all other teams will not be permitted to exceed this salary cap for any reason whatsoever. Consequently, unlike other pro sports, it is a legitimate cap, an actual cap.

Washington is currently in the middle of the pack at No. 16 among NFL teams regarding 2023 cap space available. The Commanders, for now, will have $12,549,082 accessible.

As for the NFC East, the New York Giants are sitting somewhat wealthy right now with all sorts of flexibility. The Giants have the most cap space ($54,771,480) open in the division and currently the third most in the entire NFL.

Immediately following the Commanders (2nd in the division, 16th in the NFL) is the Philadelphia Eagles. $192,839,463 is allocated to the salary cap for next season, meaning the Eagles have $10,204,438 existing cap space remaining.

The Cowboys currently have $214,102,207 designated in contracts toward next season’s cap. As for cap space available, the Cowboys are last in the division and 19th overall in the league, with $5,858,346 open to them.

The dreaded contracts that are overpriced and lead to dead-cap money are again a place where Washington needs to improve in how it approaches signing players.

Commanders no longer on the roster whom we know will count as hefty dead money against the 2023 cap are: William Jackson III ($9,000,000) and Landon Collins ($4,650,000).

Salary-cap numbers are courtesy of Spotrac.
