Takeaways and observations from Eagles 27-13 loss to Colts in preseason finale

We’re looking at takeaways and observations from the Philadelphia #Eagles 27-13 loss to the Colts in the preseason finale

Philadelphia is a Super Bowl favorite, and the march toward another deep postseason run can now begin after an efficient summer and meaningful preseason.

The Eagles concluded their 2023 preseason with a 0-2-1 record and no serious injuries outside of the thumb surgery that’ll sideline Haason Reddick for a few weeks.

The starters sat, while Tanner McKee again shined, but it wasn’t enough as the Colts built on a 17-13 halftime lead and exited Lincoln Financial Field with a 27-13 road win.

The Eagles will now work towards the August 29 roster cutdown day, with Thursday night providing some early indicators of who’s in and who’s out.

With the teams off on Friday, here are takeaways and observations of the final preseason game.

Eagles reuniting with former Titans OL Dennis Kelly

Former Titans swing tackle Dennis Kelly is reuniting with his old team.

Former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Dennis Kelly is reuniting with his old team, as he’s reportedly signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The news comes from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who did not disclose the length and financial terms of the deal.

Kelly is a former fifth-round pick of the Eagles in 2012 and spent his first three seasons in the league in Philly before being traded to the Titans in the Dorial Green-Beckham trade, a deal the Titans most certainly won.

Kelly proved to be a reliable backup and swing tackle for the Titans over his five seasons in Nashville and even earned himself a full-time starting gig in 2020 before not being retained in 2021.

He then moved on to play for the Green Bay Packers that year before signing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. He appeared in 16 games (three starts) for Indy last season.

Kelly’s brother, Tim Kelly, is now the offensive coordinator of the Titans.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Dennis Kelly is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Wednesday.

Kelly spent the 2022 season as a depth piece in the offensive line but rarely saw significant playing time. He made three starts and played just 22% of the offensive snaps during his one season with the Colts.

All of his offensive snap totals came in four games played (Weeks 6-8 and Week 13).

Kelly was brought in last offseason as a veteran depth piece for the offensive tackles and even when the Colts dealt with struggles across the entire offensive line, he still didn’t get much run as a contributor.

The Colts themselves should be looking to add some offensive line depth with training camp set to start in less than a week.

The Eagles are just six days away from the start of training camp and added a familiar veteran to the roster.

NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero reports that veteran offensive tackle Dennis Kelly is signing with Philadelphia.

The veteran Kelly filled in as a swing tackle for the Colts in 2022, starting three of the 16 games he played, logging 240 snaps (192 left tackle, 48 right tackle).

A versatile performer, Kelly has 54 career starts, including 15 starts during a three-year stint with Philadelphia from 2012-2015.

Once Kelly officially signs, the Eagles will have eight offensive tackles on the 90-man roster.

9 in-house Colts free agents remain unsigned

These in-house Colts free agents are still on the market.

While the Indianapolis Colts have seen a majority of their in-house free agents join other teams this offseason, there are still a handful of players who wore the horseshoe in 2022 available on the market.

The biggest name still available is quarterback Matt Ryan, but it remains to be seen what his future looks like in the NFL. He accepted a role as an NFL analyst with CBS Sports, but he also made it clear he’s not keen on retiring just yet.

The other big name on the list is defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who led the Colts with 9.5 sacks during the 2022 season. He’s likely to find a new home sooner rather than later, though it is a bit interesting why he hasn’t signed with a team yet.

The Colts also released veteran quarterback Nick Foles and waived tight end Nikola Kalinic following the 2023 NFL draft so they appear on the list as well.

Here’s a quick look at some of the Colts’ in-house free agents who remain unsigned in the market:

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC South Edition

Listing one free agent from the Jaguars, Texans, Colts and Titans who could be a fit for the Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be as aggressive as they have been in recent years when it comes to signing free agents.

While they’re cash-strapped, general manager Tom Telesco will likely make some moves to have some spendings available to them so they can sign some low-cost players.

That said, I will list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A.

Next up is the AFC South.
