Bears sign DE Byron Cowart

The Bears have signed defensive end Byron Cowart to a one-year deal.

The Chicago Bears have signed defensive end Byron Cowart to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Cowart, 27, is a former fifth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2019. He’s appeared in 36 NFL games, including 14 starts, during his three seasons, where he’s totaled 41 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and one pass breakup.

During his three-year career, Cowart has had stops with the Patriots (2019-20) and Indianapolis Colts (2022).

Defensive end remains one of the biggest needs for the Bears this offseason. While Montez Sweat is in place, the team needs to find a complement opposite him to serve in a rotational role with DeMarcus Walker.

This offseason, Chicago has signed a couple of reserve/rotational options at edge rusher in Jake Martin and now Cowart. But the NFL draft remains a prime opportunity to add an impact edge defender to pair with Sweat.

Dolphins signing former Patriots DL Byron Cowart to the practice squad

He spent last season with the Colts.

While the Miami Dolphins showed an improved front in Week 2 against the New England Patriots after allowing over 200 yards to the Los Angeles Chargers the week prior, they aren’t done trying to get better on the defensive line.

According to NFL agency JL Sports, their client, defensive lineman Byron Cowart, has agreed to a deal to join the Dolphins’ practice squad.

Cowart, 27, was originally a fifth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots in 2019 following a collegiate career split between Auburn and Maryland.

In his two seasons with New England, he recorded 29 total tackles and one sack while playing just 21% of the team’s defensive snaps.

Corwart played in all 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, recording 12 tackles before trying to stick with the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans this past offseason.

Report: Texans sign former Patriots DT Byron Cowart

The Houston Texans have signed former New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and Kansas City Chiefs DT Byron Cowart.

The Houston Texans have added another former New England Patriots player to their 90-man offseason roster.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans have signed former Patriots defensive tackle Byron Cowart.

The former Patriots 2019 fifth-round pick generated 15 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 1.0 sack, and a pass breakup in his 19 games with New England from 2019-20.

Cowart was unable to carry the momentum of his second season, wherein he started 14 games, into 2021 as he began the season the physically unable to perform list. New England waived Cowart ahead of training camp in 2022.

The 6-3, 300-pound defensive lineman was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts ahead of their training camp, and played 17 games for the AFC South club. Cowart collected 12 combined tackles and two tackles for loss through 17 games. The Colts did not retain Cowart and allowed him to enter free agency.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Cowart ahead of their offseason program in late March, but he was released on May 10.

9 in-house Colts free agents remain unsigned

These in-house Colts free agents are still on the market.

While the Indianapolis Colts have seen a majority of their in-house free agents join other teams this offseason, there are still a handful of players who wore the horseshoe in 2022 available on the market.

The biggest name still available is quarterback Matt Ryan, but it remains to be seen what his future looks like in the NFL. He accepted a role as an NFL analyst with CBS Sports, but he also made it clear he’s not keen on retiring just yet.

The other big name on the list is defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who led the Colts with 9.5 sacks during the 2022 season. He’s likely to find a new home sooner rather than later, though it is a bit interesting why he hasn’t signed with a team yet.

The Colts also released veteran quarterback Nick Foles and waived tight end Nikola Kalinic following the 2023 NFL draft so they appear on the list as well.

Here’s a quick look at some of the Colts’ in-house free agents who remain unsigned in the market:

Chiefs make flurry of roster moves on Wednesday

The #Chiefs continue to shuffle their roster following rookie minicamp, releasing two players and signing three more.

The Kansas City Chiefs made several roster moves on Wednesday, including waiving a recently-signed undrafted free agent, releasing a veteran defensive tackle and signing three players.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Wednesday, the Chiefs have waived Missouri S Martez Manuel. Manuel recently participated in the team’s rookie minicamp after being signed as an undrafted free agent. He spoke with media members following Monday’s practice, where he told reporters that he hoped to make football his full-time job. It appears that won’t happen in Kansas City at least for now.

Next, the Chiefs released vested veteran DT Byron Cowart from the 90-man roster. Cowart, a former fifth-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2019, was signed on a one-year deal back in March.

In corresponding roster moves, the Chiefs have signed DL Matt Dickerson, DT Chris Williams and DB Lamar Jackson, bringing their 90-man offseason roster to completion once more. None of those players were present for tryouts at the team’s rookie minicamp.

Dickerson (6-5, 292 pounds) is the most familiar of the three players. The Chiefs originally signed Dickerson to the 90-man roster in August of 2022 and he remained with the team until roster cuts. He was one of the only players waived by Kansas City that was claimed by another team. Chiefs Wire was told at the time that the team intended to sign him to the practice squad.

Williams (6-2, 302 pounds) is a former undrafted free agent out of Wagner, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. He’s appeared in 13 games with the Colts over three seasons, with 107 total defensive snaps and 13 special teams snaps. During that span, he recorded six total tackles and one quarterback hit.

Finally, the Chiefs added Lamar Jackson. . . No, not that Lamar Jackson.

A former undrafted free agent corner out of Nebraska in 2020, Jackson has made the rounds during his NFL career with stops in New York, Chicago and most recently Denver. The 6-foot-3 and 215-pound corner has appeared in 22 career games with six starts, recording 31 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and four passes defended during that span.

Chiefs to sign former Colts DT Byron Cowart

The #Chiefs are set to sign former #Colts and #Patriots DT Byron Cowart on a one-year deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to sign another outside free agent along the defensive line.

According to his agency, JL Sports, former New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts DT Byron Cowart has signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs. A former No. 1 recruit out of high school, Cowart enters his fifth season in the NFL after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Patriots out of the University of Maryland.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, Cowart spent the first three seasons of his NFL career in New England. His best season came in 2020, when he started 14 games, recording 27 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, one sack, one pass batted and seven total pressures.

In 2021, Cowart missed the entire season after being placed on the Reserve/PUP list following an undisclosed injury. The Patriots attempted to activate him and bring him back, but his practice window expired leaving him on injured reserve for the remainder of the year.

Cowart was eventually waived and claimed by the Colts. In Indianapolis last season, he appeared in all 17 regular season games, recording 12 total tackles, including 7 stops and four pressures.

This move looks quite a bit like a competitive depth signing for Kansas City. It’s a bit reminiscent of the team grabbing Taylor Stallworth in free agency last season.

Patriots part ways with two players ahead of training camp

The New England Patriots parted ways with defensive tackle Byron Cowart.

The New England Patriots parted ways with defensive tackle Byron Cowart, who landed with the Indianapolis Colts on waivers this weekend. Receiver Malcolm Perry elected to retire from the NFL, with the Patriots placing him on the reserve/retired list on Friday, according to the NFL transaction wire.

The Patriots drafted Cowart in the fifth round in 2019. Though he wasn’t enormously productive at Maryland, he was the No. 1 overall recruit coming out of high school, according to ESPN and Rivals. New England used him in a number of ways, including as a substitutional pass-rusher from the interior. He was not particularly efficient in that role and the Patriots must have felt Cowart was very unlikely to make their roster in 2022.

Perry, who attended Navy and played quarterback for the Midshipmen, plans to return to military service, per NESN’s Doug Kyed. Perry worked with Patriots in 2021 and 2022 and spent time learning the slot receiver position. He did not figure to make roster, however, with a deep group of receivers sitting ahead of Perry in New England.

Colts claim DT Byron Cowart off waiver wire

Colts made a roster move ahead of training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts claimed defensive tackle Byron Cowart off the waiver wire from the New England Patriots and waived defensive end Scott Patchan, the team announced Saturday.

Cowart, 26, was a fifth-round pick with the Patriots in the 2019 NFL draft after spending three collegiate seasons at Auburn (2015-2017) and one season at Maryland (2018).

In 19 career games, Cowart has recorded 29 tackles (15 solo), three quarterbacks hits and 1.0 sack.

In order to make room on the roster, Patchan was waived. He signed with the Colts as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Colorado State this offseason.

QB Jarrett Stidham, DT Byron Cowart return to practice from PUP list

Another QB in the mix for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots saw quarterback Jarrett Stidham and defensive tackle Byron Cowart return to practice on Wednesday after starting the season on the physically unable to perform list.

Both players had been dealing with back injuries, with Stidham undergoing surgery during training camp.

Stidham joins a quarterback group that includes Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer. It’s likely Stidham, when fully healthy, will leapfrog Hoyer as the team’s backup. Hoyer and Stidham had been locked in a battle for QB2 in 2020 behind Cam Newton — Stidham came out on top.

Cowart joins a defensive tackle group that includes Davon Godchuax, Lawrence Guy, Christian Barmore and Carl Davis. Because Henry Anderson ended up on IR, it’s likely Cowart can return to contribute this season.

New England kicks off against the New York Jets at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both players are eligible to be on the active roster.
