Eagles focused on the NFL draft after passing on another deep-threat in free agency

Chiefs re-signing WR Demarcus Robinson to 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to suggest that they’re content with the wideouts on their roster and will make additions via the NFL draft.

The Birds let another speedy wide receiver pass in free agency, this time with DeMarcus Robinson returning to the Kansas City Chiefs on an affordable deal.

During a conference call earlier this week, Howie Roseman sounded as if he’s prepared to proceed with DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery while making addition via the NFL draft.

A possible target for the Eagles in free agency, Robinson had a career year last season, starting 10 of 16 games while catching 32 passes for 449 yards and four touchdowns.

Chiefs to re-sign WR Demarcus Robinson on one-year deal

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to prioritize free agents from their Super Bowl LIV team.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to prioritize their own players in free agency. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs will bring back WR Demarcus Robinson on a one-year deal.

This comes as a bit of a surprise as Robinson was reported as a player that would draw interest from a number of teams in free agency, including the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star reports that there was outside interest in Robinson. The Chiefs kept a line of communication open once Robinson hit the free-agent market and that resulted in his return.

Robinson managed to get a nice contract in Kansas City, with the team taking full advantage of the veteran salary benefit in the new CBA. He’ll get nearly $2.3 million fully-guaranteed but only around $1 million will count toward the salary cap for the Chiefs according to Pelissero’s report.

Robinson was a fourth-round draft pick by Kansas City in 2016. He worked his way up, developing good chemistry with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes when he ran the scout team in 2017. The two have connected on some of Mahomes’ signature plays, specifically the ones he makes when the called play breaks down.

In 2019, Robinson saw his best season as a professional, setting career highs in receptions (32), yardage (449) and games started (10). He also matched his career-high in touchdown receptions (4). He played the second-most snaps of any WR on the team with Sammy Watkins edging him out by five snaps.

Robinson’s return is significant because it gives the Chiefs another reliable and familiar option in the receiver room. That’ll be important this offseason because of the potential for offseason training activities being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If they also keep Sammy Watkins, it’s entirely possible that Brett Veach won’t need to address the receiver position the draft, in what is considered to be a deep WR class.

Report: Packers had interest in WR Demarcus Robinson

The Packers were interested in Chiefs WR Demarcus Robinson before adding Devin Funchess.

The 2020 season of receiver Demarcus Robinson will be worth tracking for the Green Bay Packers.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Packers showed interest in Robinson before agreeing to sign receiver Devin Funchess on Tuesday.

Robinson, a fourth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, caught 54 passes for 737 yards and eight touchdowns over the last two seasons. He averaged 13.6 yards per catch, caught 61.4 percent of his targets and averaged 8.4 yards per target as a complementary receiver in the Chiefs offense.

The receiver-needy Packers passed on Robinson and picked Funchess, a former second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers who played in just one game in 2019 after breaking his collarbone in Week 1 with the Indianapolis Colts.

12 under-the-radar free agents for the Bills to target on offense

The NFL’s free agency period is slated to open on March 18 and the Buffalo Bills could be in business. The Bills signed cornerback Josh Norman last week, getting a head start on things.

The NFL’s free agency period is slated to open on March 18 and the Buffalo Bills could be in business. The Bills signed cornerback Josh Norman last week, getting a head start on things.

But despite that signing, the Bills moved from just the fourth-most to fifth-most salary cap space in the league, near $77.4 million, according to Spotrac. That’s a lot of room for more moves, and of course, room for big-named additions.

But in recent years, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have had a thing for finding diamonds in the rough. Could the 2020 offseason have more of the same?

With that, here are 12 under-the-radar free agents on offense the Bills could consider adding:

WR Demarcus Robinson

The Bills have John Brown and Cole Beasley who are solid, but the talent that Demarcus Robinson was behind with the Chiefs has kept his opportunities very limited. At receiver, there’s Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman, then there’s tight end Travis Kelce, who’s basically a No. 1 wideout.

But when Robinson did get some chances when Hill was out, he showed some skill. He caught 32 passes for 449 yards and four touchdowns last season. What could make him further appealing is his 14 yards-per-catch average last season. Over the past two seasons, he’s had eight total scores.

What many peg for the Bills is adding a wideout with size, though. Robinson isn’t overly big at 6-foot-1, 203 pounds, but stretching the field is a plus with quarterback Josh Allen’s arm strength.

Predicting 4 free agents likely to sign with Redskins this offseason

It’s tough to predict exactly what might happen in the NFL over the next week or two, but these four players may end up in Washington.

There is a lot of uncertainty as we head into the start of the free agency period in the NFL next week, not just for the Washington Redskins, but for the league at large. While the majority of the sporting world has shut down to fears of the covid-19 coronavirus, the NFL currently says that there are no plans to delay the league year at this time. For now, we have to operate under the assumption that this is true.

So once that free agency period opens, who will the Redskins look to sign to a new deal? The Athletic gave a home for the top 100 free agents on the market and pegged four of them to land in Washington this offseason. Let’s take a look at who those four players are, and figure out if we agree or not.

CB James Bradberry — Ranked No. 14

Bradberry should find a nice market, but this one makes too much sense not to happen. New coach Ron Rivera knows him well from their time together in Carolina, and Washington needs help at cornerback.

Bradberry has been one of the bigger prospective names for the Redskins to look at this offseason, mainly due to their desperate need at the cornerback position, coupled with his prior relationship with Ron Rivera. However, I don’t see this signing happening. Recent reports suggest that Bradberry is likely to ask for a contract that sees him paid close to $15 million per season, and the Redskins may not wish to pony up that type of money.

Instead, the Redskins could choose to sign a pair of cheaper cornerbacks and add some much-needed depth to their secondary. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them target someone like Kendall Fuller and Darqueze Dennard.

6 under-the-radar free agents Chargers should consider

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez supplies a list of six underrated players to watch out for the Los Angeles Chargers when the frenzy begins.

With free agency set to open on March 18, the Chargers won’t waste too much time to fill their roster holes.

Even though L.A. has the money to spend on one or two big-name free agents, I expect general manager Tom Telesco to still do what he does best by bargaining on some of the more underrated options on the market.

With that being said, here are six players that could be targeted:

CB Darqueze Dennard

The Chargers have one of the most talented cornerbacks in the league in Casey Hayward. However, the depth behind him isn’t the most optimal. Dennard, who was drafted in 2014, could help shore up a young secondary. Even though he played the majority of his snaps from the slot, he has proven he has the ability to play on the outside. He was limited to only 290 coverage snaps in 2019 but put up a career-high and 15th best coverage grade on those snaps. Dennard allowed only four catches of 10-plus yards, as well, per Pro Football Focus. The 5-foot-11 corner is also stout against the run.

DT Andrew Billings

The Chargers need to find veteran Brandon Mebane’s replacement since he isn’t likely to be on the team for much longer with one more year remaining on his contract. Even though he only has 3.5 sacks in a three-season span, Billings has done what he was drafted for which is the ability to dominate at the point of attack and take on double teams to allow other members from the front seven to roam freely downhill. The bottom line is that Billings is a true nose tackle, who’s young (25), won’t command as much money as the other interior defensive linemen on the market and could fill the run-plugging role that Mebane supplied with.

OL Connor McGovern

After acquiring guard Trai Turner, the interior offensive line got a boost, but it’s far from being shored up. McGovern, the former fifth-round pick, would supply versatility at both center and guard. The 26-year old started 23 consecutive games for Denver at center. Prior to playing center, McGovern played at right guard for two seasons. McGovern was the 10th-best center in the NFL last season, according to Pro Football Focus. His 82.5 pass-blocking grade was the fifth-highest in the league. In addition, McGovern was one of only three offensive linemen to play over 600 snaps without amassing a single penalty in 2019.

WR/ST Matthew Slater

Despite having two special teams standouts in Drue Tranquill and Derek Watt, the Chargers finished dead last in DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average, and estimates “how many points, compared to league average, each team receives from the five elements of special teams,” per the website.) last season. To avoid this from happening again, they could use a proven player that’s lights out in this area of the game. Slater is one of the best gunners in NFL history. He was outstanding last year, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors at age 34. Overall, he has eight Pro Bowl selections and six All-Pro selections. He’s also a phenomenal locker room presence.

OT Cornelius Lucas

The Chargers could benefit from starting-caliber players at the tackle position after the loss of Russell Okung, but they simply need more depth. Lucas, the journeyman who has played for four teams since 2014 could be a solid addition who has starter-upside. The 507 offensive snaps he played for the Bears this past season at a combination of the left and right tackle positions were more than he had played since his rookie season back in 2014, and the 72.2 overall grade that he earned marked the first time in his career that Lucas graded above 65.0, per Pro Football Focus. In 2019, he gave up just 12 pressures and one sack in starting the final five games of the season.

WR Demarcus Robinson

Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams held the positional group down this past season, but there was hardly any production outside of those two, which means that adding a third wideout is an absolute must this offseason, specifically one with speed. This past season, Robinson managed to rack up a career-high 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns. Even though the stat sheet might not be appealing, he has the straight-line speed and separation ability to be a reliable WR3.

2020 NFL Free Agency: Breshad Perriman named the one player the Eagles must sign

Buccaneers Breshad Perriman named the one player the Eagles must sign in free agency

[jwplayer iyxvChl0-ThvAeFxT]

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to be active during free agency and with Howie Roseman likely to use a hefty amount of cap space on trying to land Byron Jones, he’ll need to get creative with trying to lure second-tier guys to the NovaCare Complex.

One guy that’s been mentioned a ton during the buildup to free agency is Breshad Perriman.

The former first-round pick resurrected his career in Tampa Bay last season and he’s been mentioned as a guy that could help Carson Wentz and the Eagles expand their deep passing game.

In a piece from Ben Linsey of ESPN.com breaking down the one player, all 32 NFL teams must sign on the open market, Perriman was once again the first choice for Carson Wentz and company.

Philadelphia Eagles: WR Breshad Perriman
2019 team: Buccaneers | Age: 26

By the end of the season, the Eagles were running out wide receivers anyone recognized. Injuries did a number to the group, and one such injury to DeSean Jackson made it apparent that the Eagles were missing a downfield threat. No player had a higher average depth of target in 2019 than Perriman’s mark of 18.8 yards downfield, and he dropped just one of his 65 targets. By the end of the season, he was a legitimate No. 1 option in the Tampa Bay offense due to injuries. He seems to have put his career struggles behind him, and that should be enough to interest the Eagles.

Perriman helped carry Jameis Winston to a 5,000 yard passing season after Mike Evans and Chris Godwin both were lost for the season with an injury.

Perriman had his best NFL season in 2019, catching 36 passes for 645 yards (17.9) and six touchdowns after bouncing around on three different teams over the past few years.

Making the case for the Eagles to add these two WR’s in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles need to add two speedy wide receivers in free agency. Breshad Perriman and Demarcus Robinson would be great fits.

It is a well-known fact the Philadelphia Eagles need to add speed to their wide receiver room this offseason.

DeSean Jackson was electric for the Eagles in 2019, but he only really played one game all season.   It is a no-brainer for the Eagles to keep Jackson for the 2020 season, even with his $8.6 million salary-cap hit.

Jackson showed, when healthy, he still has the juice.  The connection from quarterback Carson Wentz to Jackson was special in the limited time we got to witness it. There is clearly some risk in bringing back Jackson, mainly because of his age and coming back from his injury that ended his season, but it is one the Eagles need to take.

Keeping Jackson will be great, but that should not factor into their team-building decisions this offseason.  The Eagles need to add the fastest receivers they can, but they need to do it before the draft, and they need to add more than one.

Luckily for the Eagles, the free agency period features some pretty fast receivers, but two, in particular, should peak the Eagles interest the most based off of skill, fit, age, and the potential contract.

A lot of Eagles fans love the idea of adding Robby Anderson to the offense, but with reports circulating that Anderson could get around $14 million or more a year, the Eagles should pass. Actually, it should be a hard pass at that price. Anderson is a good player, but his production doesn’t warrant such a big contract. The Eagles have far too many holes to overpay for Anderson. The extra money they save can go to a cornerback in free agency or someone they trade for and extend instead, like  Darius Slay.

The first receiver the Eagles should sign in free agency is a former first-round pick and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver, Breshad Perriman.   After being drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft (26th overall), Perriman struggled to remain healthy and be productive when healthy, so he was cut before the 2018 season. After bouncing around from the Washington Redskins to the Cleveland Browns, the Buccaneers signed him before the 2019 season to a 1-year, $4 million deal.

Hoping to finally shed the bust label, Perriman didn’t disappoint. In 14 games, he caught 36 passes for 645 yards and six scores, all career highs.

Perriman, who is only 26 years old, is once again a free agent and the Eagles are the perfect landing spot him for him.   PFF projects the Eagles could give him a 1-year, $7 million deal.

The second receiver the Eagles should add in free agency is former Kansas City Chiefs receiver, Demarcus Robinson.  A potential contract for Robinson could hover around 3-years, and almost $16.5 million, or around $5.5 million a year.

Robinson, who is only 25 years old, is entering his fifth year in the league and has been a solid player for the Chiefs the last two seasons, catching 54 passes, for 737 yards, and 8 touchdowns. The former fourth-round pick out of Florida would transition to the Eagles smoothly with Doug Pederson being an Andy Reid disciple. Robinson played behind Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, but Hill was out 4 weeks early in the season, which gave Robinson a bigger role.

In those 4 weeks, Robinson caught 16 passes for 281 yards and 3 scores. A bigger role in Philly would be a match made in heaven for Robinson and the Eagles.

Adding Perriman and Robinson this offseason should be a high priority for the Eagles. The two receivers would be great additions to the offense. Both of them are young, have a ton of upside, and their contracts shouldn’t be crazy. Adding two speedy, young, receivers for less than $15 million a year combined would be a great move for the Eagles, especially pairing them up with Jackson.

If they head into the 2020 NFL Draft without adding a speedy receiver in free agency, they could be in trouble. However, if they did add Perriman and Robinson before the draft; Roseman and the Eagles will have a much easier time drafting at the end of April—and it is exactly what they should do.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC West Edition

Chargers Wire goes through every NFL team and names one free agent the Los Angeles Chargers should consider, starting with the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to enter free agency with the most salary cap available since Tom Telesco took over as general manager in 2013.

Even though the franchise has some in-house players that will need to get paid, there’s a great chance that Telesco and company will be aggressive in signing other soon-to-be free agents to bolster an already talented roster, with the hopes of making a quick turnaround after finishing 5-11 in 2019.

With that being said, we are going to list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A. First up is the AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs – WR Demarcus Robinson, Chiefs

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams held the positional group down this past season, but there was hardly any production outside of those two, which means that adding a third wideout is an absolute must this offseason.

Robinson would be the perfect addition because he can stretch the field to open things up for the other pass-catchers. He flourishes as a deep ball and after the catch threat, winning with his straight-line speed and slivers of separation with his athleticism and polished route running.

Overshadowed by Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and rookie Mecole Hardman, Robinson still managed to rack up a career-high 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns during the 2019 regular season.

Demarcus Robinson a name to watch for the Eagles in 2020 free agency

Eagles expected to pursue WR Demarcus Robinson in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to undergo some scathing changes on both sides of the ball and with almost $41 million in salary-cap space, Howie Roseman and company have the ability to get creative in adding playmakers to the offensive side of the ball.

With Carson Wentz basically carrying the Eagles to their third straight playoff berth, it’ll be imperative for the front office to surround their franchise quarterback with a variety of weapons, that won’t necessarily break the bank.

Greg Ward showed that he can handle the work in the slot, while DeSean Jackson is expected to return healthy in 2020. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert help form the best tight end tandem in the NFL, while Alshon Jeffery is hoping to return to his 2018 form.

With Nelson Agholor expected to move on in free agency, Chiefs free agent wide receiver Demarcus Robinson is a name to watch moving forward per Jeff McLane of The Inquirer.

A core member of the Chiefs dynamic Super Bowl offense, Robinson caught the Eagles eye during the 2016 NFL Draft process, and during four seasons with Kansas City, amasses 75 catches for 949 yards and eight touchdowns.

During the 2019 NFL season when Tyreek Hill missed four games with an injury, Robinson thrived in his absence, catching 16 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns.
