Top five Ohio State running backs of the last 10 years

Ohio State has had a lot of really good running backs lately. #GoBucks

We have started a new series here at Buckeyes Wire of ranking the top players at each position for Ohio State over the last 10 years. Up next: running backs.

Throughout Ohio State football history many legendary running backs have worn the scarlet and gray. The Buckeyes have had four running backs win the Heisman trophy.  This includes the only player in college football history to win the award twice, Archie Griffin who took home the award in 1974 and 1975.

Eddie George had 2,344 scrimmage yards in 1995 to win the award, and Howard “Hopalong” Cassady became the third Buckeye to win the Heisman in 1955. Vic Janowicz was a jack of all trades as he played tailback, safety, kicker, and punter taking home the award in 1950.

Today, we discuss the stars to play running back for the Buckeyes in recent memory. The list includes running backs who lasted played for Ohio State in the 2013 season or later.

This was a difficult ranking to produce as there are many running backs deserving of praise, but here’s how it all shook out.

Memorable Ohio State players that were known as Michigan dominators: Carlos Hyde

Memorable Michigan dominators: Carlos Hyde #GoBucks

We previously discussed how dominant Dwayne Haskins was against Michigan during his time as a Buckeye and I wanted to continue this series and mention another star who shined brightest against The Team Up North in Carlos Hyde.

Hyde saw action in three games against the Wolverines during his career, but the first time barely counts as Hyde saw time in mop-up duty in 2010 as a freshman. No. 8 Ohio State was winning 37-7 and Hyde earned one carry for four yards with a little over two minutes left during the last drive as the Buckeyes were running out the clock.

Hyde failed to see action in the 2011 loss due to being behind Daniel “Boom” Herron, but in 2012 Hyde was a monster with 26 carries for 146 yards and one touchdown along with one reception for eight yards during the 26-21 win to cap off an undefeated season. The Buckeyes were unfortunately banned from the postseason.

In 2013, Carlos Hyde gained more rushing yards against Michigan than any Buckeye in history with an insane 226 rushing yards on 27 carries. Despite gaining a crazy amount of yards, Hyde only scored one touchdown during the No. 3 Ohio State’s 42-41 win over Michigan.

Carlos Hyde had a fantastic career at Ohio State, but his dominance against Michigan was remarkable.

Careers and legends are often made in The Game when Ohio State and Michigan face off against one another. Who will make a name for themselves on Saturday afternoon? That chapter has yet to be written, but we can’t wait to see what plays out.

Former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde released by Jacksonville

Carlos Hyde has been released by the Jags.

Former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde has been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars according to a release from the team on Friday.

Hyde came to Jacksonville to reunite with former Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer when he took the head coaching position with the Jaguars. We, of course, know how Meyer’s short tenure in Jacksonville ended, and now Hyde will be moving on after just one season with the Jags in which he rushed for just 253 yards and one touchdown.

Hyde played for Ohio State from 2010 to 2013 when he first played for Meyer when he took the head coaching position in 2012. Hyde was then drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2014 NFL draft. After a few years with the Niners, Hyde became a bit of a journeyman, spending time with the Browns, Chiefs, Texans, Seahawks, and Jags twice.

At 31 years old, you have to wonder if Hyde will get another shot with an NFL team or not. We’ll keep checking the news wires and announcements of other franchises to see if he gets another crack.

Jaguars release RB Carlos Hyde as tampering period nears

It appears the Jags may be starting the process of freeing up a bit more cap space and released veteran RB Carlos Hyde Friday.

With the tampering period approaching on Monday, NFL teams will be making moves to free up cap space when it comes to certain veteran players. That was the case Friday for the Jags as they released RB Carlos Hyde and freed up $1.9 million in terms of cap savings.

Hyde, 31, was believed to be a release candidate due to his ineffectiveness in the backfield last season. He ultimately ended the season with just 253 yards and a touchdown on 72 carries, which put him at a 3.5 yard per carry average. Hyde also missed Weeks 15-17 after sustaining a concussion in the Jags’ second game against the Tennessee Titans.

Hyde signed with the team last year in free agency and was a player who was familiar with the Jags organization (through another stint), as well as general manager Trent Baalke (who drafted him in San Francisco) and former coach Urban Meyer (his college coach). He signed a two-year deal worth $4.5 million that guaranteed $1.4 million.

Heading forward, it will be interesting to see what the Jags do about running back depth. They will have their two top rushers in James Robinson and Travis Etienne returning from severe injuries, while Dare Ogunbowale is a pending free agent. Luckily, the draft has depth at running back, but there are notable rushers who could be on the free-agent market, too, if the Jags want to go that route.

Jags reunite with RB Ryquell Armstead by signing him off Packers’ practice squad

With Carlos Hyde now on IR, the Jags turned to a familiar face for running back depth.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made multiple transactions on Wednesday and among them was the signing of running back Ryquell Armstead off the Green Bay Packers practice squad.

The signing marks a reunion for the Jags who drafted Armstead in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Armstead played in all 16 games with the Jags and started in one. He was able to accumulate 35 carries for 108 yards in the process.

Armstead, unfortunately, missed last season after battling COVID-19. He had to be hospitalized twice in the process and battled “significant respiratory issues” per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, he’s back and has recovered and spent time on the practice squads of the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and the Packers this season.

The Jags’ decision to bring back Armstead comes after the team placed Carlos Hyde on injured reserve Wednesday with a concussion. It was an injury he sustained two Sundays ago against Tennessee after taking a big hit from linebacker Derick Roberson in the second half. He missed Week 15’s game against Houston as a result and the Jags decided to shut him down for the season.

Jags officially place safety Rayshawn Jenkins on IR, RB Carlos Hyde joins him

The Jags have placed two of their most experienced players on IR.

The Jacksonville Jaguars put two of their most experienced players on injured reserve Tuesday in safety Rayshawn Jenkins and running back Carlos Hyde. The former was an expected move after Darrell Bevell discussed Jenkins situation on Monday, but Hyde’s situation is a bit of a shock.

In Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans, Jenkins had his ankle rolled up during a kickoff where defensive back Tremon Smith returned a kickoff for a 98-yard touchdown. Jenkins’ ankle was inadvertently caught underneath linebacker Chapelle Russell after he missed the tackle on Smith and had to be carted to the back afterward.

Jenkins, 27, signed a four-year, $35 million deal in the spring and was one of the Jags’ most expensive additions of the offseason. He finished the season with 73 tackles, which is good for fourth on the team.

As for the 31-year-old Hyde, he also joined the team this offseason on a two-year deal worth $4.5 million. He missed the Jags’ last game after sustaining a concussion Wee 14 against Tennessee when linebacker Derick Roberson delivered a big hit on him. He’ll end the season with 72 carries for 253 yards and a touchdown.

Jaguars inactives for Week 15 game vs. Texans

The Jags have named their six inactives for Week 15’s game, and it appears TE Jacob Hollister will be getting some play time after weeks of being a healthy scratch.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released their list of inactive for Week 15’s game against Houston, and six players were on it. Those six players are as follows:

  • 21 CB Nevin Lawson
  • 24 RB Carlos Hyde
  • 76 OL Will Richardson Jr.
  • 89 TE Luke Farrell
  • 92 DE/OLB Jordan Smith
  • 97 DT Jay Tufele

Running back Carlos Hyde was the lone player to surface in the status column for the Jags on Friday’s injury report and was ruled out with a concussion. He missed all of the Jags practices this week while in the concussion protocol after sustaining a huge hit from linebacker Derick Roberson last Sunday against Tennessee in the second half.

Offensive lineman Will Richardson was a late addition to the injury report on Friday with a back injury. While he didn’t surface in the status column, it appears the Jags want to give him time to recover.

Another player worth noting that was listed above is rookie tight end Luke Farrell. He’s played in 12 games so far, but with a coaching change occurring this week, maybe new interim coach Darrell Bevell wants a more experienced option on the field in Jacob Hollister.

As for the Texans inactives, they are as follows:

Jags Week 15 final injury report: RB Carlos Hyde ruled out

Calos Hyde will be the lone player to miss Week 15 for the Jags after sustaining a concussion against Tennessee.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their final injury report for Week 15 and they only had one player in the status column. That player was running back Carlos Hyde, who was ruled out with a concussion after not practicing all week.

Hyde sustained his injury Sunday against the Houston Texans after taking a massive hit from linebacker Derrick Robinson in the second half. He was able to walk to the sideline with the trainers, but never returned to the game.

The three players who didn’t practice Thursday in running back James Robinson, linebacker Myles Jack, and defensive tackle Malcom Brown, all were upgraded to full participation.

All but two players were full participants on Friday’s injury report. Hyde, of course, was one and offensive lineman Will Richardson (back) was the other. Richardson wasn’t on the injury report previously, but was a late addition. Despite his injury, though, he didn’t surface in the status column.

As for the Houston Texans, only two players were ruled out. One of them was quarterback Deshaun Watson, who hasn’t played for the team all season after demanding a trade.

Then the other player that was ruled out was defensive back Justin Reid.

For more on Reid’s situation, head over to the Texans Wire here.

Jaguars Week 15 injury report: 4 starting OL upgraded to full participation

Seven players were upgraded to full participation on Thursday for the Jags. Offensive linemen Andrew Norwell and Brandon Linder was among them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars saw a lot of upgrades on the injury report Thursday as seven players were upgraded to full participation. Four of those players were members of the offensive line in Ben Bartch (back), Brandon Linder (back), Jawaan Taylor (ankle) and Andrew Norwell (back).

There were two other starters who were upgraded to full participation alongside the four offensive lineman in pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder) and receiver Marvin Jones, who had Wednesday off to rest. Receiver Tavon Austin also was upgraded to full participation after having Wednesday off for the same reason as Jones.

As expected, running back James Robinson (heel/knee) and linebacker Myles Jack (knee) continued their routine of not practicing on Thursday to help them recover from their lingering injuries which have placed them on the injury report for several weeks.

The last two notables who didn’t practice were running back Carlos Hyde (concussion) and defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe). Brown has been on the report for multiple weeks with the same injury, while Hyde was a new addition after sustaining a concussion in the second half of Sunday’s game against the Titans.

As for the Houston Texans, there were only two changes to the report as tight end Pharaoh Brown was added for an illness and running back Rex Burkhead (hip/quad) was upgraded to limited. For details on the Texans’ full injury report, head over to Texans Wire.

Jaguars Week 15 injury report: 5 starters miss Wednesday’s practice

EDGE Josh Allen (shoulder), LB Myles Jack (knee), OG Andrew Norwell (back), and DL Malcom Brown (toe) were the #Jaguars’ starters who missed practice Wednesday due to injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had seven players who missed practice Wednesday, four of which were starters and did so because of injury. Those four players were pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder), linebacker Myles Jack (knee), guard Andrew Norwell (back), and defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe).

Additionally, two of the seven players held out simply sat to rest, and those players were receivers Tavon Austin and Marvin Jones Jr.

Allen, Jack, Brown, and Norwell were all on the injury report last week, but Norwell was on it because he was given Wednesday off to rest. Jack is likely to miss Thursday, too, as it was revealed that he and running back James Robinson would both miss the second practices of each remaining week.

Running back Carlos Hyde, who sustained a concussion Sunday against the Tennessee Titans after linebacker Derrick Robinson delivered a massive hit on him in the fourth quarter, didn’t practice either. Hyde was taken to the sideline by the doctors (under his own power) and didn’t return to the game.

Robinson (heel/knee) was among the group of players who were limited alongside center Brandon Linder (back), offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor (ankle), and guard Ben Bartch (back). Robinson. Linder, and Bartch are all players who were on the previous injury report, although Linder ended up not playing Sunday. However, this week it appears the veteran will be returning, which would be a huge addition for the offense.

As for the Houston Texans’ injury report, notables like running back Rex Burkhead (hip/quad) and defensive back Justin Reid (concussion/illness) didn’t practice and were among the nine players listed on the injury report. For more on their full report, head to Texans Wire.
