2020 NFL Free Agency: Breshad Perriman named the one player the Eagles must sign

Buccaneers Breshad Perriman named the one player the Eagles must sign in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to be active during free agency and with Howie Roseman likely to use a hefty amount of cap space on trying to land Byron Jones, he’ll need to get creative with trying to lure second-tier guys to the NovaCare Complex.

One guy that’s been mentioned a ton during the buildup to free agency is Breshad Perriman.

The former first-round pick resurrected his career in Tampa Bay last season and he’s been mentioned as a guy that could help Carson Wentz and the Eagles expand their deep passing game.

In a piece from Ben Linsey of ESPN.com breaking down the one player, all 32 NFL teams must sign on the open market, Perriman was once again the first choice for Carson Wentz and company.

Philadelphia Eagles: WR Breshad Perriman
2019 team: Buccaneers | Age: 26

By the end of the season, the Eagles were running out wide receivers anyone recognized. Injuries did a number to the group, and one such injury to DeSean Jackson made it apparent that the Eagles were missing a downfield threat. No player had a higher average depth of target in 2019 than Perriman’s mark of 18.8 yards downfield, and he dropped just one of his 65 targets. By the end of the season, he was a legitimate No. 1 option in the Tampa Bay offense due to injuries. He seems to have put his career struggles behind him, and that should be enough to interest the Eagles.

Perriman helped carry Jameis Winston to a 5,000 yard passing season after Mike Evans and Chris Godwin both were lost for the season with an injury.

Perriman had his best NFL season in 2019, catching 36 passes for 645 yards (17.9) and six touchdowns after bouncing around on three different teams over the past few years.

Making the case for the Eagles to add these two WR’s in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles need to add two speedy wide receivers in free agency. Breshad Perriman and Demarcus Robinson would be great fits.

It is a well-known fact the Philadelphia Eagles need to add speed to their wide receiver room this offseason.

DeSean Jackson was electric for the Eagles in 2019, but he only really played one game all season.   It is a no-brainer for the Eagles to keep Jackson for the 2020 season, even with his $8.6 million salary-cap hit.

Jackson showed, when healthy, he still has the juice.  The connection from quarterback Carson Wentz to Jackson was special in the limited time we got to witness it. There is clearly some risk in bringing back Jackson, mainly because of his age and coming back from his injury that ended his season, but it is one the Eagles need to take.

Keeping Jackson will be great, but that should not factor into their team-building decisions this offseason.  The Eagles need to add the fastest receivers they can, but they need to do it before the draft, and they need to add more than one.

Luckily for the Eagles, the free agency period features some pretty fast receivers, but two, in particular, should peak the Eagles interest the most based off of skill, fit, age, and the potential contract.

A lot of Eagles fans love the idea of adding Robby Anderson to the offense, but with reports circulating that Anderson could get around $14 million or more a year, the Eagles should pass. Actually, it should be a hard pass at that price. Anderson is a good player, but his production doesn’t warrant such a big contract. The Eagles have far too many holes to overpay for Anderson. The extra money they save can go to a cornerback in free agency or someone they trade for and extend instead, like  Darius Slay.

The first receiver the Eagles should sign in free agency is a former first-round pick and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver, Breshad Perriman.   After being drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft (26th overall), Perriman struggled to remain healthy and be productive when healthy, so he was cut before the 2018 season. After bouncing around from the Washington Redskins to the Cleveland Browns, the Buccaneers signed him before the 2019 season to a 1-year, $4 million deal.

Hoping to finally shed the bust label, Perriman didn’t disappoint. In 14 games, he caught 36 passes for 645 yards and six scores, all career highs.

Perriman, who is only 26 years old, is once again a free agent and the Eagles are the perfect landing spot him for him.   PFF projects the Eagles could give him a 1-year, $7 million deal.

The second receiver the Eagles should add in free agency is former Kansas City Chiefs receiver, Demarcus Robinson.  A potential contract for Robinson could hover around 3-years, and almost $16.5 million, or around $5.5 million a year.

Robinson, who is only 25 years old, is entering his fifth year in the league and has been a solid player for the Chiefs the last two seasons, catching 54 passes, for 737 yards, and 8 touchdowns. The former fourth-round pick out of Florida would transition to the Eagles smoothly with Doug Pederson being an Andy Reid disciple. Robinson played behind Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, but Hill was out 4 weeks early in the season, which gave Robinson a bigger role.

In those 4 weeks, Robinson caught 16 passes for 281 yards and 3 scores. A bigger role in Philly would be a match made in heaven for Robinson and the Eagles.

Adding Perriman and Robinson this offseason should be a high priority for the Eagles. The two receivers would be great additions to the offense. Both of them are young, have a ton of upside, and their contracts shouldn’t be crazy. Adding two speedy, young, receivers for less than $15 million a year combined would be a great move for the Eagles, especially pairing them up with Jackson.

If they head into the 2020 NFL Draft without adding a speedy receiver in free agency, they could be in trouble. However, if they did add Perriman and Robinson before the draft; Roseman and the Eagles will have a much easier time drafting at the end of April—and it is exactly what they should do.

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC West Edition

Chargers Wire goes through every NFL team and names one free agent the Los Angeles Chargers should consider, starting with the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to enter free agency with the most salary cap available since Tom Telesco took over as general manager in 2013.

Even though the franchise has some in-house players that will need to get paid, there’s a great chance that Telesco and company will be aggressive in signing other soon-to-be free agents to bolster an already talented roster, with the hopes of making a quick turnaround after finishing 5-11 in 2019.

With that being said, we are going to list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A. First up is the AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs – WR Demarcus Robinson, Chiefs

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams held the positional group down this past season, but there was hardly any production outside of those two, which means that adding a third wideout is an absolute must this offseason.

Robinson would be the perfect addition because he can stretch the field to open things up for the other pass-catchers. He flourishes as a deep ball and after the catch threat, winning with his straight-line speed and slivers of separation with his athleticism and polished route running.

Overshadowed by Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and rookie Mecole Hardman, Robinson still managed to rack up a career-high 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns during the 2019 regular season.

Demarcus Robinson a name to watch for the Eagles in 2020 free agency

Eagles expected to pursue WR Demarcus Robinson in free agency

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to undergo some scathing changes on both sides of the ball and with almost $41 million in salary-cap space, Howie Roseman and company have the ability to get creative in adding playmakers to the offensive side of the ball.

With Carson Wentz basically carrying the Eagles to their third straight playoff berth, it’ll be imperative for the front office to surround their franchise quarterback with a variety of weapons, that won’t necessarily break the bank.

Greg Ward showed that he can handle the work in the slot, while DeSean Jackson is expected to return healthy in 2020. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert help form the best tight end tandem in the NFL, while Alshon Jeffery is hoping to return to his 2018 form.

With Nelson Agholor expected to move on in free agency, Chiefs free agent wide receiver Demarcus Robinson is a name to watch moving forward per Jeff McLane of The Inquirer.

A core member of the Chiefs dynamic Super Bowl offense, Robinson caught the Eagles eye during the 2016 NFL Draft process, and during four seasons with Kansas City, amasses 75 catches for 949 yards and eight touchdowns.

During the 2019 NFL season when Tyreek Hill missed four games with an injury, Robinson thrived in his absence, catching 16 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns.

Report: Giants expected to pursue WR Demarcus Robinson in free agency

The New York Giants are expected to pursue Kansas City Chiefs WR Demarcus Robinson once free agency begins in March.

The New York Giants have an abundance of needs headed into free agency and will likely key in on offensive tackles and edge rushers. However, they’ll also poke around some of the available wide receivers.

Although the Giants seem relatively stocked at the position, they are in need of another outside receiver and/or red zone threat, and could come by way of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Demarcus Robinson.

Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media reports that the Giants are expected to pursue Robinson once free agency begins in March.

The Giants are expected to pursue Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs wider receiver Demarcus Robinson when free agency begins, an individual with knowledge of the situation tells NJ Advance Media.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Robinson set career-highs with 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns last season, but did not record a catch in Super Bowl LIV.

Over his first four seasons, the 25-year-old Robinson has appeared in 64 games (23 starts), hauling in 75 receptions on 127 targets for 949 yards and eight touchdowns. He has a 59.1 catch percentage and earned a Pro Football Focus grade of just 57.8 in 2019.

Robinson can play both outside and in the slot, although the Giants have both Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard to play inside.

7 players in the Super Bowl the Bills could target in free agency

7 players from the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV that Buffalo Bills could target in free agency.

Super Bowl LIV could be the crowning achievement for the careers of many players on the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

But it also could be the final game some players suit up for their respective teams. In the modern day NFL with free agency spending going up and up, players move often.

Could any of them make their way to the Bills during free agency?

Here are seven pending free agents suiting up in Super Bowl LIV that the Bills could have interest in:

Kansas City Chiefs

CB Bashaud Breeland

Bashaud Breeland has had an interesting NFL career. He had a strong first four seasons with the Redskins and inked a three-year contract with the Panthers in free agency. However, he cut his foot during a trip to the Dominican Republic, causing his contract with Carolina to be voided.

With that in mind, the Bills run a similar defense to Carolina’s from that year with Sean McDermott having come from there. So could Breeland be a fit in Buffalo? He did have two interceptions and eight passes defended last year, but his Pro Football Focus marks… aren’t grade. The football analytics outlet graded him the 99th best cornerback in the NFL this past season.

In addition, he’s a vet, and the Bills have had a thing for signing vets (EJ Gaines, Kevin Johnson, Vontae Davis) to suit up in their No.2 corner role.

4 pending free agents in Super Bowl LIV the Chargers could consider signing

There are four pending free agents in Super Bowl LIV that the Los Angeles Chargers could consider signing.

The biggest game of the year is just days away, as the San Francisco 49ers are set to clash with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

While many around the world are gathering around to watch the contest for entertainment purposes, teams across the league are using this as a part of their evaluation process for the offseason.

Each team will have a slew of soon-to-be free agents that could draw their attention. With that, here are four players that the Los Angeles Chargers should have their eyes on:

WR Demarcus Robinson, Chiefs

Wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams held the positional group down this past season, but there was hardly any production outside of those two, which means that adding a third wideout is an absolute must this offseason.

Robinson would be the perfect addition because he can stretch the field to open things up. He flourishes as a deep ball and after the catch threat, winning with his straight-line speed and creating slivers of separation with his athleticism and route rhythm to give his quarterback a manageable window.

Overshadowed by Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and rookie Mecole Hardman, Robinson still managed to rack up a career-high 32 catches for 449 yards and four touchdowns during the 2019 regular season.

4 impending free agents Colts should watch in Super Bowl LIV

Colts should watch these players in Super Bowl LIV.

The big game is almost here. When the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs battle it out in Miami for the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LIV, the whole world will be watching.

That includes the Indianapolis Colts, who have already begun preparing for the offseason. Part of that preparation is finding out which free agents to go after when the new league year begins in March. There are a few they should keep an eye on during the big game.

Here are four impending free agents the Colts should watch in Super Bowl LIV:

Mark Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

DT Chris Jones, Kansas City Chiefs

The Colts desperately need help at the interior defensive line position and Jones will be one of the biggest free-agent targets across the entire league. How invested the Colts will be this offseason remains to be seen, but Jones should be one of their top priorities.

Though he didn’t have an elite season, Jones was solid in most regards. Where it matters most, he recorded 9.0 sacks. That would be a huge boost to the Colts defense from the three-technique. Even with his size (6’6, 310), he could side over and play some nose tackle if needed as well.

The Colts got close to nothing with their interior pass rush and Chris Ballard has made it clear that is the position that drives the defense. If Jones hits the market, he should be one of the top targets.

6 players in the Super Bowl the Jets should target in free agency

Emmanuel Sanders and Demarcus Robinson are among players the Jets should target that will be playing in Super Bowl 54 down in Miami, Fla.

All eyes will be on the Super Bowl on Sunday, and that should include those belonging to members of the Jets front office.

Team officials should be glued to the game, as there are several players playing in Miami that are set to hit the open market in March. The best two teams in the NFL are strapped with talent and it would be foolish for the Jets to not want to model their franchise like the Chiefs and 49ers have.

With that said, let’s take a look at six Super Bowl participants that the Jets should have their eyes on come free agency.

49ers: WR Emmanuel Sanders

(Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports)

While Emmanuel Sanders will be 33 years old this March, he proved his worth in San Francisco, making a significant impact down the stretch for the 49ers passing attack.

The Jets are lacking a true threat on the outside and Sanders has shown no indication that his production is going to slow down. While New York would like to have Robby Anderson back, Sanders would be the complement that would continually allow Gang Green’s true homerun threat to take the top off of defenses.

New York will have to get creative in its search for Sam Darnold’s No. 1 wide receiver. The 49ers not only gave Sanders a lifeline after his best days were behind him in Denver, but he also recorded 36 receptions for 502 yards and three touchdowns in 10 regular-season games.

Although the Jets may not have the cap flexibility to extend Anderson and ink Sanders to a lucrative deal, Sanders provides some veteran experience that the position group would be lacking with Demaryius Thomas and Quincy Enunwa unlikely to return.

4 free agents Colts should watch in AFC, NFC Championship games

There are some free agents to watch in the championship games.

The AFC and NFC Championship games kick Sunday afternoon between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

The Colts are still two months away from NFL free agency being an actual thing, but there are still players they can keep an eye on during the playoffs that might intrigue them when March rolls around.

Here are four pending free agents the Colts should watch on Sunday:

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

49ers DE Arik Armstead

After a career of being labeled mostly as a bust, Armstead had a career campaign in 2019. It came at the perfect time as the former first-round pick is set to hit free agency following the expiration of his rookie contract.

Through his first four seasons in the NFL, Armstead recorded 9.0 sacks combined. Things weren’t looking good for the Oregon product until he exploded for 10.0 sacks in 2019, which could intrigue teams more when he hits the market.

Armstead (6’7, 292) could play both on the edge and the interior for the Colts. They certainly need some help in the latter area.
