Cardinals receiver changes name … and it isn’t Marquise Brown

An Arizona Cardinals wide receiver has chosen a new name

When learning that an Arizona Cardinals wide receiver had legally changed his name, the first thought was Marquise Brown adopting “Hollywood” as his first name.

Not so fast.

Another player in the Cardinals WR room has audibled.

Robby/Robbie Anderson is now Anderson R, Chosen.

What the Wires are saying about the Baker Mayfield trade

Months in the making, the Cleveland Browns send Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers. How does he fit with his new team?

Baker Mayfield is heading to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick. Mayfield joins a quarterback room that includes Sam Darnold and Matt Corral but looks like the presumptive starter for the Panthers in 2022.

To make the deal happen, Mayfield took a $3 million salary reduction and the Browns will pay $10.5 million of his 2022 salary.

It was a fantastic move for the Panthers who gave up very little in terms of compensation but receive a player that has played in 60 games in his NFL career and thrown for more than 14,000 yards. While his experience in Cleveland might have been a bit up and down, he’s still a veteran player that has playoff experience and the Panthers could use that.

There was some great reaction to the trade from around the NFL and from Sooners fans as well on social media. Here, let’s take a look at what PanthersWire, BrownsWire, and TouchdownWire had to say about the trade that went down on Wednesday.

Robby Anderson’s old tweet about not wanting Baker Mayfield on the Panthers is so awkward now

Well this is awkward.

If new Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield is to have success in Carolina, wide receiver Robby Anderson will presumably be a part of it. Before that can happen, though, Mayfield is going to have to win Anderson over.

Anderson came out against his team trading for Mayfield when rumors of the potential pairing first surfaced in April. In response to an Instagram fan page that cited a report calling Carolina the most likely landing spot for Mayfield, Anderson commented “Nooooo.”

And when another Instagram page re-posted Anderson’s comment and said he was against trading for Mayfield, the Panthers’ second-leading receiver doubled down. He responded to that post with “Facts.”

More than two months later and the Panthers did it anyway, adding Mayfield to a quarterback room that desperately needed an upgrade. And, let’s just say things might be a bit awkward to start. But winning over Anderson might not be too difficult. The six-year vet told Pro Football Talk he was just trying to defend Sam Darnold, and if the trade happened “it would be what it is.”

“Just trying to defend the guy who is my quarterback in a sense,” Anderson said. “… That’s it. … I’ve got to make him right and stand up for him.”

Panthers WR Robby Anderson switching uniform numbers?

Panthers WR Robby Anderson might be switching his uniform number this season and a platinum recording artist might’ve broken the news.

Carolina Panthers receiver Robby Anderson didn’t have the season anyone wanted him to have in 2021—posting career-lows in yards (519), catch rate (48.2 percent) and yards per target (4.7) fresh off a sweet two-year deal. But with a particularly important campaign ahead, the soon-to-be 30-year-old’s gotta keep a tunnel vision.

Part of that vision may include a new aesthetic for Anderson, who hinted to rapper Kodak Black that a change in uniform number could be on the horizon. On Sunday, the platinum recording artist posted a direct message from the wideout on his Instagram page that featured some potentially new-look threads.

Unless that’s just an old Derek Anderson jersey, Robby will presumably—at least based off this exchange—go from No. 11 to No. 3 in 2022. The link to Kodak Black is those Florida roots, as Anderson wore No. 3 at South Plantation High School in Broward County—home to the Pompano Beach rapper.

So, will a switch to a familiar digit help get him back in his bag? Is No. 3 the one?

He probably hopes so.

Panthers Robby Anderson doesn’t want Baker Mayfield to join team

In what seems like an unusual public diss, the WR made it clear he has no interest in the QB coming to Carolina:

The Cleveland Browns seem no closer to resolving the future of QB Baker Mayfield than the day they traded for Deshaun Watson to take his place. With the team’s offseason activities starting next week and the NFL draft following closely behind, time is not on the Browns side right now.

Neither is opportunity, it seems.

Mayfield asked to be traded to the Indianapolis Colts, they instead traded for Matt Ryan.

The Seattle Seahawks have been mentioned as a possible landing spot, including on his recent podcast appearance, but they just brought Geno Smith back to go along with Drew Lock.

That leaves the Carolina Panthers as the only team that hasn’t made a move at the quarterback position despite having a need this offseason. WR Robby Anderson clearly is not interested in Mayfield joining him there:

While the Seahawks could still be interesting in Mayfield and the Panthers may not care what Anderson thinks, it is interesting for a player to push back against another player like this publicly.

Anderson had his worst professional season in 2021 despite an extra game on the schedule with 53 receptions, 519 yards and five touchdowns. In his two seasons with the Panthers, Anderson’s yards per reception dropped to 11.5 and 9.8 following four straight seasons of 14.0 or higher.

Mayfield is likely to move on to another team but, at this point, it doesn’t seem like teams, and at least one player, are interested enough in him.

Panthers WR Robby Anderson really does not want Baker Mayfield on his team

Robby Anderson really, really doesn’t want Baker Mayfield on the Panthers. In fact, he even doubled-down on that sentiment.

Last week, Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson briefly became a lightning rod of debate for a tweet folks perceived as a shot at a quarterback. Except it wasn’t.

But this one certainly is.

On Friday, a fan Instagram account, @panthers.way, posted a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that suggested Carolina was the most likely landing spot for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Anderson (@chosen1ra), who wasn’t subtweeting or sub-commenting this time, made it clear he’s not exactly cool with such a prospect.

Oh, and in case the “Nooooo” wasn’t clear enough, he followed up on a subsequent post from @panthersnat1on . . .

With the Panthers still looking for an answer under center, Mayfield remains a viable option for 2022—at least in the eyes of some. In the eyes of Anderson, it seems like a pretty hard pass.

Funnily enough, the feeling might be mutual for Mayfield—who recently tabbed the Seattle Seahawks as his most likely destination. Something also tells us Baker wouldn’t be the only person happy to see a trade go through to the northwest.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson was not subtweeting about QB Sam Darnold

Whether he’s Robby or Robbie Anderson, the Panthers WR doesn’t seem interested in taking shots at Sam Darnold on Twitter.

The artist formerly known as Carolina Panthers receiver Robby Anderson is now Carolina Panthers receiver Robbie Anderson. Oh, and he wasn’t taking shots at his quarterback on Wednesday.

As Sam Darnold’s interview with the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast made its rounds last night, Robbie hit the send button on a few interesting tweets. One of which, as captured below by who may apparently be a hybrid being of rapper Bobby Shmurda and Los Angeles Clippers guard Reggie Jackson, caught the attention of many fans.

Now, was Anderson referring to Darnold? Well, it was kinda conceivable to believe so.

Darnold took a laissez-faire approach to answering questions about his own job security, telling host Taylor Lewan that “whatever happens, happens.” One may say that it was, indeed, lame. Also, in the hubbub of the Carolina faithful forming their own opinions on the matter, Anderson deleted the tweets just a few hours later.

He didn’t delete these ones, though, in setting things straight on Thursday evening.

So, there you have it. If he wanted the smoke, he would’ve brought it to Darnold’s doorstep. Alas, he does not and did not.

Whether it’s Robert, Robby or Robbie—he’s not very interested in creating drama on social media at the moment. He’s only interested in success.

Panthers WR Robby Anderson sends out recruiting call to all free agents

Apparently, Panthers WR Robby Anderson wants to get players paid and made in Carolina.

Hey, current NFL free agents!

Do you want to win? Do you want to help build something special? And do you want to get paid?

Then Robby Anderson and the Carolina Panthers might have a deal for you!

On Thursday morning, the 28-year-old wideout sent out a pretty simple recruiting pitch for any remaining players out on the open market. If you’re looking for dubs, camaraderie and cash—look no further, apparently . . .

Say what you will about Anderson’s 2021 campaign—because, surely, it wasn’t great. He finished an emotion-filled season with career-lows in receiving yards (519) and yards per reception (9.8).

But you can’t say the wideout has never been down for the cause. From his callout of the team’s “fake fans” to his aspirations of actually being in the playoffs instead of watching them from his couch, Anderson has his focus locked in on a bounce-back 2022.

To Carolina’s credit, they’ve quietly done quite a job in free agency. Additions such as offensive linemen Austin Corbett and Bradley Bozeman, linebackers Damien Wilson and Cory Littleton, defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis, safety Xavier Woods as well as new deals for cornerback Donte Jackson and his buddy DJ Moore have the Panthers pretty well set up thus far.

Is there, however, more to come for the team with almost $9 million worth of cap space more than the next closest front office in the NFL?

Report: Panthers, Patriots have discussed trade for WR Robby Anderson

According to Boston Sports Journal, the Panthers have talked to the Patriots about a trade for WR Robby Anderson.

This past season, Carolina Panthers wideout Robby Anderson detailed how Bill Belichick tried to sign him over the to New England as a free agent in 2020.

“Last year when I was in free agency, when he tried to get me to sign there, he was like ‘I’m tired of scheming against you. I’m tired of going against you,’” Anderson said in the buildup to the Week 9 matchup. “It came down to them [Carolina and New England] and a couple other teams. But, ya know, business decision.”

Well, the Panthers—seemingly with Belichick in mind—might now be making a business decision on him.

According to Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal, the Panthers and Patriots have discussed a deal centering around the six-year receiver. Bedard also adds that New England will look to move on from Nelson Agholor, who they signed to a two-year, $22 million deal last spring, if a trade can be completed.

Shipping away Anderson would open up a chunk of cash for Carolina and, perhaps, give them some additional resources—likely draft compensation—in return.

If such a deal were to go down before June 1, the Panthers would save a little over $9 million in space with Anderson accounting for $7.6 million in dead cap. If this were to stretch past that date—which wouldn’t seem quite as realistic—those numbers would shift to $13 million and $3.8 million, respectively.

Anderson, fresh off a sweet two-year pact of his own, is coming off the worst season of his NFL tenure. The 28-year-old reeled in 53 of 110 targets for a career-low 519 yards and five touchdowns.

The pros and cons of a Jets-Robby Anderson reunion

Should the Jets try to trade for Panthers WR Robby Anderson? A look at the pros and cons of a reunion:

Robby Anderson would welcome a return to New York if the Panthers trade him, according to the Daily News’ DJ Bien-Aime. But should the Jets feel the same way about a potential reunion?

They need a lot of help on offense and Anderson would provide them with a veteran speedster on the outside. But it’s unclear if the Jets would want Anderson back after letting him walk in free agency two years ago. New York would also have to give up assets in order to reunite with Anderson and would likely be on the hook for most of his $16.8 million cap hit.

Let’s look at the pros and cons of trading for Anderson this offseason.
