Broncos sign 12 players to reserve/future contract

The Broncos signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. They will officially join the 90-man offseason roster in March.

Following the conclusion of their 2023 season, the Denver Broncos have signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts.

Perhaps the most notable signing is that of quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent all of the 2023 season on the practice squad and was elevated to Denver’s game-day roster three times.

With Russell Wilson expected to be released in March, DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham will be left as the Broncos’ two quarterbacks going into 2024. Denver will likely add at least one more QB, either through free agency or the draft (or both) this spring.

Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts (every player on the practice squad is eligible, for example). These players will officially join the 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

Here’s a look at the 12 players the Broncos have signed to future deals.

Broncos buzz: Injuries, fines and elevations before Week 17

The Broncos placed RB Dwayne Washington on the reserve/NFI list and called up WR Michael Bandy, WR Phillip Dorsett and OLB Ronnie Perkins.

The Denver Broncos made several roster moves on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

First, the Broncos placed running back Dwayne Washington (illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list. To fill Washington’s former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver promoted receiver/returner Michael Bandy from the practice squad to the active roster.

With Courtland Sutton (concussion) ruled out and Jerry Jeudy (illness) and Marvin Mims (hamstring) both questionable, Bandy can provide more depth on offense and special teams against the Chargers.

In addition to the Bandy-for-Washington swap, the Broncos also elevated wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins from the practice squad to the game-day roster for Week 17. Dorsett and Perkins will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Fine update: Denver guard Quinn Meinerz was fined $7,251 by NFL for unnecessary roughness against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve. Meinerz was penalized for jumping on Patriots linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley in the second quarter.

Broncos confirm final 3 practice squad signings

The Broncos have filled their practice squad after officially signing WR Phillip Dorsett, TE Lucas Krull and WR David Sills.

The Denver Broncos announced the final three signings to their practice squad on Thursday, officially adding wide receivers Phillip Dorsett and David Sills as well as tight end Lucas Krull.

Dorsett (5-10, 192 pounds) is a 30-year-old speedy deep threat who had a brief stint with Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson while playing for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021.

Dorsett has spent time with six NFL teams, hauling in 151 receptions for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns in 92 career games. He won Super Bowl LIII with the New England Patriots following the 2018 season.

“We are pretty familiar with the player, and I was at his pro workout,” Payton said of Dorsett. “He gives you speed and transition.”

Sills (6-3, 211 pounds) is a 27-year-old receiver who spent the last four years with the New York Giants, playing in 13 games. He has totaled 13 receptions for 123 yards in his career.

Krull (6-6, 260 pounds) is a 25-year-old tight end who spent most of his rookie season on the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad in 2022. He appeared in just one game last season, playing 11 snaps.

Denver’s 17-player practice squad is now full. The Broncos previously announced their first 14 practice squad signings on Wednesday.

Broncos signed recently released former Raiders WR Phillip Dorsett

Former Raiders WR Phillip Dorsett signed by Broncos

One of the moderately surprising cuts by the Raiders has already found a new home. He is joining the rival Broncos.

The Broncos signed Dorsett today, a day after the Raiders made him one of the players they released to get down to 53 players.

Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels was familiar with Dorsett from their time together with the New England Patriots. But it was former Patriots receiver Kristian Wilkerson who McDaniels opted to keep instead.

While Dorsett is more established, Wilkerson is four years younger (26) and more of a ‘dirty work’ type of receiver. Dorsett has always been a speed guy and the Raiders like DeAndre Carter in that role.

In the end, the Raiders still kept six receivers, which is pretty much the maximum number. You can’t keep everyone. Dorsett landed on his feet elsewhere so it worked out for everyone.

The Broncos signed WR Phillip Dorsett to their practice squad.

Story update: The Broncos are signing Phillip Dorsett to their practice squad, not the active roster. Wee are tracking all of the team’s practice squad signings on this page. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos are signing free agent wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Because he is a veteran with more than four years of experience, Dorsett (30) was not subject to the NFL’s waiver wire on Wednesday after being cut by the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday.

Dorsett (5-10, 192 pounds) entered the league as a first-round pick out of Miami with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015. He later spent time with the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans before joining the Raiders earlier this year.

Dorsett played two games with Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson while playing for the Seahawks in 2021, catching one pass for three yards.

In his career, Dorsett has totaled 151 receptions for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Dorsett becomes the fifth wide receiver on Denver’s roster, joining Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims and Brandon Johnson.

The Broncos will have to make a corresponding roster move to make room for Dorsett on the 53-man roster.

Raiders clear up picture at wide receiver with release of veterans Keelan Cole, Phillip Dorsett

WR picture gets clearer for Raiders with release of vets Keelan Cole, Phillip Dorsett

And in one fell swoop, the Raiders have given us a better idea of what the Raiders wide receiver room will look like this season.

With the cutdown deadline fast approaching, the team has notified Keelan Cole and Phillip Dorsett they will not be on the initial 53-man roster, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL media.

With four of the wide receiver spots looking to be set, it leaves one or two spots up for grabs and three receivers left to take it/them.

The four spots that are set are:

Davante Adams
Jakobi Meyers
Hunter Renfrow
DeAndre Carter

The three receivers vying for either the final spot or final two spots are Tre Tucker, Kristian Wilkerson, and Cam Sims.

Tucker looked terrible in preseason, dropping passes and muffing kicks. The only thing he may have going for him is being a third round (100 overall) rookie. But will that be enough?

Both Wilkerson and Sims made solid cases for their retention this preseason. Wilkerson in particular had a monster final preseason game in Dallas, with 10 catches for 122 yards. Sims had highlight reel grabs in both the final two preseason games. The first a toe-tapping touchdown against the Rams and the other a leaping 22-yard grab against the Cowboys.

Wilkerson is more of a possession receiver while Sims is a jump ball/red zone target. Wilkerson has familiarity in Josh McDaniels’s system, having spent two seasons in New England in 2020-21. Sims has more NFL experience, having appeared in 55 games with 17 starts over five seasons.

We will know soon which of these three made the roster.

UPDATE: Kristian Wilkerson has made the Raiders’ 53-man roster according to a source. That puts the Raiders WR room at five.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 2 vs Rams

Your Ballers & Busters for the Raiders’ second preseason game vs Rams

Another preseason in the books. And while the joint practices were probably more useful to the starters than the game — because many didn’t play and most of those who did saw just one drive — the roster hopefuls rely on it as a proving ground. Not just for the Raiders, but any other team that may be watching.

For that reason, it gives the Raiders a lot to think about. Obviously because they want to keep the best players, but also because they don’t want to risk another team scooping them up on waivers.

In that regard, the performances in the game means something. Whether it’s those who balled out or those whose performance was a bust. In other words…

Ballers

QB Aidan O’Connell

He’s two for two this preseason as the Raiders’ top Baller. This week he played the entire second half and was nearly flawless doing it. He threw for 163 yards on 11 of 18 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The fourth round rookie is developing quite a following this early on and deservedly so.

LT Jermaine Eluemunor, RT Thayer Munford

With Josh McDaniels saying Kolton Miller was a bit banged up, he moved Eluemunor from right to left and started Munford on the right side. And the two formed a wall for half the game.

The first drive of the game was led by Jimmy Garoppolo. The Raiders marched down the field 70 yards for the score. Along the way Munford was a key block on a ten-yard run, Eluemunor cleared the way for Zamir White to pick up the first and goal on third and one, and the next play Munford was part of the escort for Brandon Bolden to score from seven yards out.

There were several time Brian Hoyer held the ball much longer than you’d have liked. But because of Eluemunor and Munford, he only paid for it once. Two other times, he sat in the pocket comfortably until he found his man for completions of 17 yards and 43 yards.

WR Phillip Dorsett, WR DeAndre Carter

Those completions of 17 and 43 yards both went to Dorsett on consecutive plays near the end of the first half. Two plays later, his man was flagged for pass interference trying to keep Dorsett from beating him for another catch. And it led to a field goal.

But that’s not where Dorsett’s day stared. He had the first catch of the game from Garoppolo on the opening touchdown drive. He got a step on his man on a deep ball on the next drive, but the pass was behind him so it was knocked down.

Carter was impressive because he had nice plays in three different areas. He laid a clear out block on the first touchdown. Then at the end of the first quarter, he had a 31-yard punt return before just barely getting pushed out of bounds near midfield, and finally he had a nine-yard catch. Check those three boxes. We already know about his deep speed.

LB Curtis Bolton

As you might expect, this special teams maven made his first play of the game in the return game, getting down the field on coverage teams to make the stop at the 24-yard-line. He would make another special teams tackle later in the game.

In the second quarter, he was in on defense and made a run stop for no gain despite the defender grabbing his face mask.

In the third quarter he had a tackle on a short catch and a tackle for loss that was nullified by a holding penalty on the defense.

LB Drake Thomas

The undrafted rookie showed some great instincts and tackling abilities. He entered the game on defense in the third quarter and finished with a team leading 10 combined tackles, including four run stops of two yards or less and a tackle for loss and two tackles on special teams.

WR Keelan Cole

The O’Connell/Cole connection was clicking in the second half. For five catches on six targets for 60 yards. That included a 21-yards hookup on O’Connell’s first touchdown drive and catches of 11 yards and 17 yards on third and nine on his second TD drive.

Honorable Mention

S Isaiah Pola-Mao — Was in the right position to haul in an interception which he returned 50 yards for a TD.

G Greg Van Roten — Gave up no run stuffs or pressures while being a key block on the Brandon Bolden TD run to end the first drive.

WR Cam Sims — Made an impressive leaping touchdown grab along the right side of the end zone, dragging his toes to secure it. There’s value in being able to make catches like that.

WATCH: Trio of Ex-Patriots reunite in Las Vegas after signing

It was a Patriots reunion in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed several former New England Patriots this offseason, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and wideout Phillip Dorsett.

The signings reunited all three players with another former member of the Patriots in head coach Josh McDaniels.

Garoppolo and Meyers both signed three-years deals, while Dorsett signed for an undisclosed amount and length. Dorsett and Garoppolo were teammates in New England and won a Super Bowl together in 2017. Meyers played for New England from 2019-2022 and was a big part of the wide receiver group.

It was a bit surreal to see them all together on the same team and greeting each other, in a heartwarming moment posted on the Raiders’ social media account.

Time will tell how they will produce on the football field. Nevertheless, it’s very clear that there will be a serious New England influence on the team.

Report: Raiders to sign former Texans WR Phillip Dorsett

The Las Vegas Raiders have plans to sign former Houston Texans wideout Phillip Dorsett.

With the Las Vegas Raiders also comprised of former New England Patriots front office and coaching personnel, it means another NFL team is also interested in players who once played for the AFC East club.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Raiders have agreed to sign former Houston Texans receiver Phillip Dorsett Tuesday.

Dorsett started in four of his 18 games played for Houston from 2021-22. The 5-10, 192-pound speedster caught 26 passes for 364 yards and a touchdown for the Texans.

The former Indianapolis Colts 2015 first-round pick played his first two seasons with the AFC South club before joining the Patriots in 2017, where he spent the next three seasons. Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler was the Patriots’ director of pro personnel and coach Josh McDaniels was New England’s offensive coordinator.

Report: Patriots interested in bringing back former 1st-round pick WR

Will the Patriots look to the past for receiver help?

The New England Patriots and Houston Texans are among the teams interested in wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, according to ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime.

Dorsett has familiarity with New England. He was part of the trade that sent quarterback Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts in September 2017.

He ended up playing three seasons with the Patriots, recording 73 catches for 881 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season came in 2019, when he caught 29 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns.

This would be an intriguing move, given that New England needs to upgrade the wide receiver position. Dorsett to New England would not be a flashy signing, but he would be able to provide veteran depth at a position that needs playmakers.

It remains to be seen what New England will do in free agency, as teams around them have loaded up on stars. Nevertheless, the Patriots are committed to exploring all avenues in an effort to contend in the crowded AFC East next season.
