Takeaways from Georgia’s SEC championship OT win

Georgia wins an 22-19 overtime thriller in the SEC championship vs. the Texas Longhorns.

The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (11-2) have played in intense games against tough opponents this year, but none was more important than the SEC championship. Georgia squared off against the No. 2 Texas Longhorns (11-2), a team the Bulldogs beat in the regular season.

Many critics, such as Joel Klatt, considered Georgia an underdog, but Georgia snagged victory out of the jaws of defeat. The Bulldogs’ prospects looked pretty grim in the first half. Texas led 6-3 and Carson Beck left the game with injury. However, the Bulldogs relied on Trevor Etienne to storm back, gaining a 13-6 lead in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Texas tied it at 13 with a 41-yard pass from quarterback Quinn Ewers to DeAndre Moore Jr.. Georgia kicked a field goal, taking the lead with 4:35 left, and the Bulldogs should’ve sealed it with an interception of Ewers with 3:44 left to go. However, Gunner Stockton threw his own interception to give Texas one last shot to drive the field and kick a field goal, which sent the game into overtime tied at 16.

In overtime, Georgia stopped Texas at the 15-yard line, so the Longhorns kicked a field goal. The Bulldogs capped their drive with a Trevor Etienne rushing touchdown to win, 22-19.

This was somewhat a must-win game for Georgia. If the Bulldogs were 10-3, they could’ve risked having to travel in the playoff first round or miss the field entirely. With the selection committee’s decision to leave Florida State out of the playoffs last year partially due to Jordan Travis’ injury, the same fate could’ve happened to Georgia with Beck getting hurt had the Bulldogs lost.

Now, Georgia will get a first-round bye for winning the SEC. This marks the third time in four years Georgia has won the SEC title.

Texas will host a home playoff game, but the Longhorns would’ve been much better off had they received a bye.

HERE ARE FOUR KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM GEORGIA’S WIN OVER Texas:

The Status of Carson Beck

Todd Kirkland/Getty Images

It was great for Georgia fans to see Georgia win the SEC championship once again, but the status of Beck looms over the playoff possibilities for Georgia. Beck came back to hand the ball off to Etienne for the game-winning score, but his injury status will be something to monitor.

Will Beck be forced to miss a game or the rest of the season? After Beck’s first-half injury, Georgia fans received their first extended look at Gunner Stockton. Stockton made some highlight plays and was a legitimate runner, but he threw a ghastly interception under pressure. Regardless of Beck’s up-and-down season against SEC opponents, he has much more experience than Stockton.

The bye week will be huge for Beck’s recovery, but if he misses time, the Bulldogs will have to rely on unproven options at quarterback. It has worked before for Alabama, so could it work for Georgia.

Trevor Etienne’s presence was much needed

Regardless of the quarterback play, the Bulldogs were able to rely on a stout running game. The lead back was Etienne, who put on a stellar performance of 122 total yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, on 21 touches (16 carries and five receptions). Safe to say, he didn’t appear affected by the rib injury that kept him out the past three games.

Etienne’s presence allowed Nate Frazier to be an effective change-of-pace back. He accrued 47 yards on six carries.

Georgia’s front seven was electric

In Georgia’s last matchup against Texas, the front seven was the story of the game. The Bulldogs produced seven sacks and forced four turnovers in the Week 8 matchup. Georgia allowed 29 rushing yards on 27 attempts.

With Texas’ standout tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. ruled out, the script was similar in this game. Georgia racked up six sacks of Quinn Ewers. While the passing game was pretty effective for Texas, the Longhorns’ running game was stifled again. Georgia allowed Texas to gain 31 rushing yards on 28 attempts.

Daylen Everette had a legacy game

Daylen Everette was also a big story from Georgia’s Week 8 game against Texas. He had a forced fumble, a sack and an interception.

This game was similar, except he was best in coverage. He picked off Ewers twice, and if it weren’t for Stockton’s interception, his pick could’ve sealed the game. Everette had a legacy game against Texas again. He took home the SEC championship MVP as a result.

Georgia’s top SEC championship performers

The Georgia Bulldogs beat the Texas Longhorns in the 2024 SEC championship thanks to several standout performances. In the 22-19 defensive minded SEC championship win for the Bulldogs, who are the bright spots for Georgia during the Dawgs’ comeback victory?

Quarterback Gunner Stockton

In a game where Stockton thought he was not going to play, he stepped up in the most important game of his career. Stockton was taking what the defense gave him through going 12 of 16 with 71 yards.

He added a rushing dynamic that helped the UGA offense. In the first possession after halftime, he helped dissect Texas’ defense to take the 10-6 lead. In late fourth quarter, he threw a costly interception that turned into a Texas field goal to send the game into overtime. In overtime, he was decisive and showed off his toughness after taking a huge hit from Texas safety Andrew Mukuba.

Running back Trevor Etienne

Trevor Etienne’s injury status was up in the air due a rib injury. Carson Beck left the game with an upper body injury, then Etienne stepped up to aid the comeback.  He became the focal point of the offense gaining over 100 total yards and scoring the only two touchdowns for the Georgia offense including the game-winning touchdown in overtime to crown the Bulldogs SEC champions.

“This why you come to Georgia,” Etienne said during his postgame interview. Etienne transferred from the Florida Gators to Georgia during last offseason.

Defensive back Daylen Everette

Daylen Everette has faced an insane amount of adversity during his time at Georgia. He was picked on last season, but was the shut down corner in the SEC championship. He had two interceptions against a very experienced quarterback in Quinn Ewers. Everette has been progressively been getting better this season and played his two best games versus Texas.

Entire front seven

The Georgia front seven made their mark all game. In the previous matchup, they had seven sacks and 10 tackles for loss. In the SEC title game, they accounted for six sacks and 15 tackles for loss against Texas offensive lineman.

The most talented player in this front seven, junior defensive lineman Mykel Williams, played out of his mind with two sacks and two tackles for loss. Another player that showed up big time was senior defensive lineman Warren Brinson with a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.

‘My best opportunity was here’: Freshman corner never wavered after coordinator change

When news of Brent Venables’ departure for Oklahoma broke back in December, it wasn’t long after that Clemson saw an expected wave of decommitments that comes with a coordinator change.

One by one, the IMG Academy trio of Keon Sabb, Jihaad Campbell and Daylen Everette, elected to pursue opportunities elsewhere. As well as Jaren Kanak, who chose to follow Venables to Norman.

And while there were rumors that Torinao Pride, Jr. could soon follow and also walk back his commitment ahead of the early signing period, that was never going to happen.

“I don’t know why those rumors got out or anything,” Pride recently told The Clemson Insider during an NIL collective appearance in Clemson Sunday. “I think they got out because I was so close with the IMG guys. I was supposed to room with Jihaad. Daylen, that was another close friend — he was a corner.

“I think the rumors got out just because I was close with them, but my best opportunity was here. My main goal, I’m not going to college for friendships. I’m going to play on the field because I got a goal at the end of the day.”

Don’t get Pride wrong, he’s made plenty of friends in the class of 2022, but he didn’t choose Clemson because of the friendships he could make. He chose Dabo Swinney’s program because he knew it gave him the best opportunity to get on the field as soon as possible.

“I just want to get on the field,” he added.

Pride said that he’s still close with each Sabb, Campbell and Everette. During our conversation, he indicated that he could call all three of them at that very moment and they would answer.

Those relationships are still there, but that hasn’t deterred him from making new ones in what will be his home for the next 3-4 years.

“I feel like I met a lot of brothers,” Pride said. “A lot of long friendships here. I could be grown with kids and I could still hit up some of these guys over here and they could do the same with me.”

Clemson’s decommitments were ‘hurtful’ for Venables

Within a week after former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables departed to become Oklahoma’s new head coach, the Tigers suffered three decommitments on the defensive side of the ball in the IMG Academy trio of five-star cornerback Daylen …

Within a week after former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables departed to become Oklahoma’s new head coach, the Tigers suffered three decommitments on the defensive side of the ball in the IMG Academy trio of five-star cornerback Daylen Everette, four-star safety Keon Sabb and four-star defensive end Jihaad Campbell.

Dabo Swinney and his staff weren’t the only ones affected by those players withdrawing their pledges from Clemson.

So was Venables.

“What was it like for me? There was a few decommitments. That was hurtful for me,” Venables said Wednesday during his National Signing Day press conference. “I know, one, the need that they have for those young guys. Clemson doesn’t just keep recruiting when they get a commitment. Some places just keep recruiting if they can get a better guy. They’ll address it down the road and they might have to tell a guy, hey we don’t have a spot for you, and guys are left without scholarships. And that’s not how Coach Swinney handles his business. So, by being upfront and honest and doing things the right way, sometimes that can hurt you in this game, but overall, it’ll serve you well.”

Everette has since signed with Georgia, while Sabb inked with Michigan and Campbell put pen to paper with Alabama.

Venables said he had conversations with Clemson’s decommits and wanted them to reconsider the situation.

“I’ve even spoken to a few guys after they decommitted, just to say hey, you need to rethink this,” Venables said, “and just try to help them and just to hopefully be another source that could bring a little clarity in a very difficult process for both the prospects and for the universities.”

Out of respect for Swinney and his staff, Venables says once he took over as Oklahoma’s head coach, he didn’t try to keep pursuing the players he recruited at Clemson.

“I’ve not tried to continue to ‘recruit guys,’” he said. “My relationship with Coach Swinney goes so much further than the football field. He’s family to me. The rest of the staff there is family to me. So again, I’ve got incredible respect and appreciation and thankfulness, and again, just trying to do things the right way. In this profession, the pressure to win and to get players, I think people lose their way. And for me, that’s always been an easy philosophy and value system to have, is just to do what’s right. So, I’ve tried to do that.”

Before taking the Oklahoma job, Venables said he hit the recruiting trail “with every intention of being the defensive coordinator at Clemson,” but at the same time, tried to be upfront and honest with prospects about his interest in Oklahoma and the communication that had taken place between him and the Sooners.

“I think that’s just the way you do things, just try to be upfront and honest,” Venables said. “To me, Clemson’s an easy sell. That’s what I tried to do. There’s so many reasons we don’t have time in this press conference to talk about what makes that place so great. Taking me out of the equation is what I’m talking about and what makes it so great.

“So, that was easy for me. I was every bit as invested there, at the time, in Clemson University and Coach Swinney, how good he’s been to me and our family. So, I felt it was the very least that I could do, to try to continue to help Clemson through that time. And again, the speculation, it was important for me to get in front of them and continue in support of both their opportunity there and again, their future there.”

Georgia could have greatest DB recruiting class ever…and it might not be done yet

This class of defensive backs is just sick…

Georgia currently has the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class for the 2022 cycle after the commitment of 5-star cornerback Daylen Everette on Tuesday.

Everette becomes the sixth defensive back to commit to UGA in this class, and the third 5-star defensive back.

With the start of the early signing period set to begin on Wednesday, the Dawgs are in great position to reel in the greatest recruiting class of defensive backs that college football has ever seen.

Here’s who Georgia has committed in the secondary, plus one more who very well may announce his commitment to Georgia on Wednesday.

5-star CB commits to Georgia: Twitter reacts

Is this the greatest DB class ever?

Georgia has added a commitment from 5-star cornerback Daylen Everette in the class of 2022, who chose the Bulldogs over Alabama.

Everette, a former Clemson commit out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, announced the news on his Twitter on Tuesday, one day before the start of the early signing period.

Everette ranks as the nation’s No. 29 overall player and No. 6 cornerback, per 247Sports’ Composite Rankings.

He becomes Georgia’s 27th commitment and allowed UGA to regain the No. 1 ranked class and pass Alabama.

Everette is also Georgia’s fourth 5-star commit in this class.

Georgia now has three five-star defensive backs ready to sign: Everette, Malaki Starks and Jaheim Singletary. Additionally, Georgia has commitments from four-star cornerbacks Julian Humphrey and Marquise Groves-Killebrew, plus four-star safety JaCorey Thomas.

Here are the best Twitter reactions to the news:

5-star CB Daylen Everette decommits from Clemson

Five-star cornerback Daylen Everette decommitted from Clemson after Brent Venables took the head coaching job with Oklahoma.

Five-star cornerback recruit Daylen Everette has decommitted from the Clemson Tigers. Everette decided to reopen his recruitment after former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables decided to take the head coaching job with the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Georgia Bulldogs were among the top five schools in the hunt to secure a commitment from five-star defensive back Daylen Everette.

The University of Georgia offered Everette a scholarship early in his recruiting process in December 2019. Everette is a member of the class of 2022 and plays football at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Before transferring to IMG Academy, Everette played football at Norview High School in Norfolk, Virginia.

Now, Everette committed to Clemson over Georgia, UNC, Oregon, and FSU. back on July 17.

Everette has a background running track and is ranked as one of the top prospects in the country. He is the No. 29 prospect in his class and the No. 6 cornerback recruit.

The five-star corner visited Alabama following his decommitment. The Crimson Tide are certainly in the mix for Everette. UGA already has commitments from three cornerbacks in the class of 2022, so it would be unlikely for the Dawgs to take many more, but Everette has the talent to fit into any recruiting class.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior has an elite list of offers, including from  Florida, LSU, Oklahoma and Miami.
