The 8 biggest storylines for NFL OTAs, if they’d started on time

Looking at what we would’ve monitored during OTAs.

It seems we will get a shortened or cancelled set of the NFL’s organized team activities, with the coronavirus shuttering most of the teams’ facilities through May and, perhaps, June.

The spring workouts are a good time for NFL teams to teach their playbook and begin to get a sense of how the depth chart will shake out. It’s dubbed passing camp, because players can’t wear full pads and therefore can’t really practice the run game. OTAs are also more of a teaching camp, with minicamp and training camp generally being the more formal time when players are fighting for their jobs.

Even with COVID-19 putting football on pause, we won’t stop thinking about football. So we figured we’d highlight the biggest storylines ahead of organized team activities, whether they happen or not.

1. What are the Patriots going to do without Tom Brady?

All eyes will be on which quarterback gets the first snaps under center. Will it be Jarrett Stidham, who won the backup job in 2019? Or will it be Brian Hoyer, a veteran with a wealth of experience in the Patriots’ system?

New England is figuring out how to move on from the greatest quarterback of all time. That’s enough of a problem. But Brady’s supporting cast was weak in 2019, and the Patriots only upgraded the unit with a pair of rookie, third-round tight ends, a position where first-year players rarely make an impact. Not only will the Patriots have to figure out who to play at quarterback, but they’re also going to have to work on developing the talent around him, starting with receiver and 2019 first-round pick N’Keal Harry.

2. What will Tom Brady do without the Patriots?

Brady is already hard at work with his new Buccaneers teammates. For the first time in years, Brady’s teammates are teaching him the offense — and not the other way around. How will the quarterback look in a new environment? Considering he has an absurd amount of talent at the receiver and tight end positions, Brady should be just fine, especially because he’s got Gronk as a safety net. But it’s easy to imagine the quarterback will experience some growing pains, even at 43 years old.

3. Do Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen like each other?

Diggs seemed to leave the Minnesota Vikings in part because of Kirk Cousins. The receiver tweeted “it’s time for a new beginning” just hours after the Vikings signed Cousins to an extension. That came after Diggs’ sideline temper tantrum when Cousins failed to target the wideout. Their relationship seemed tense. And perhaps it was because Cousins misfired on deep balls — or misread the defense and missed an open Diggs altogether. Thing is, Allen is liable to make the same mistakes, maybe more often.

4. Where are the Panthers in their new construction of their offense?

Coach Matt Rhule is coming from Baylor. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady is coming from LSU. Teddy Bridgewater is coming from the New Orleans Saints. It’s a fascinating mishmash of experience and passing firepower.

How will it come together?

And can those three men get the most out of a high-potential receiving group which includes Robby Anderson, D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel?

5. Are the Cleveland Browns there yet?

Last season, they seemed like they had the talent at the skill positions to actually win some games and be playoff relevant. But Baker Mayfield and Freddie Kitchens regressed. The Browns did what they always do: lose. Then they did another thing they always do: fire their head coach.

And while increased spending and coaching turnover hasn’t been kind to Cleveland in the past, I’m fascinated with what the Browns did this offseason. They hired coach Kevin Stefanski. (Maybe he’s good?) They signed tight end Austin Hooper to add to their ridiculous group of skill players. But most important, they signed tackle Jack Conklin and drafted Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills. The tackle position has been a nightmare for quite some time (which is partially why the quarterback play has also been awful). That tackle talent will hopefully make Cleveland better on offense.

6. Is Jordan Love a total mess (or will we get a quarterback competition sometime soon)?

Love is a developmental prospect, who has time to improve during Rodgers’ lengthy runout on his contract. It’s hard to imagine Love competing for the starting job anytime soon. But it will be fascinating to see how quickly he develops, especially because Rodgers is clearly unhappy to have Love in the quarterback room.

7. Which Dolphins QB looks better: Ryan Fitzpatrick or Tua Tagovailoa?

Considering how tough the Dolphins schedule is, they might be wise to stick with Fitzpatrick, who was the 14th best QB in the NFL in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus. Fitzpatrick can help them win tough games at the beginning of the season while Tagovailoa learns the offense and gets 100% healthy from his hip injury. The Dolphins are open to starting the quarterback they selected at fifth overall, according to the Miami Herald. (Obviously.) So this quarterback battle will be a fun one.

8. Who needs Cam Newton?

I was just saying that OTAs are a good time for players to learn from the coaches. But the coaches may learn a few things from their players, too. And one of those things might be that they don’t have the talent they need at quarterback. Maybe this realization will dawn on the Patriots, the Las Vegas Raiders, the Los Angeles Chargers or the Chicago Bears. But Newton needs and home, and maybe after OTAs (if they happen), he’ll find one.

Browns legend Joe Thomas looks like a totally different person on ‘The Titan Games’

The Cleveland Browns legend is unrecognizable on the show.

The Rock’s new game show, The Titan Games — which is basically a combination of American Ninja Warrior and American Gladiators — debuted on NBC last night.

The breakout star of the first episode was Browns legend Joe Thomas, the ironman of football who played left tackle for Cleveland for the better part of a decade. Thomas was the “Titan” and took on two challengers on Mt. Olympus, which is like the Aggro Crag but for large people who do Crossfit.

That’s all well and good. What was more notable was that Joe Thomas was, for all intents and purposes, completely unrecognizable. I had known that Thomas lost a lot of weight after his career — he played at 312 pounds — but still, I did a triple take.

This was Joe Thomas when he was an All Pro offensive lineman with the Browns:

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

This is Joe Thomas on The Titan Games:

NBC Universal

If I saw that man on the street, I would certainly be wowed by his size, but I would also have absolutely no idea that was Joe Thomas.

My colleague Andrew Joseph wrote about Thomas’ transformation last year. Thomas lost over 50 pounds since his playing days, and points to a lot of cardio — swimming is his favorite — and a diet heavy in meat and vegetables as getting him down to his current size.

Nick Chubb named to list of top NFL players under age of 25

Georgia football great and current Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb considered one of the best young NFL talents.

Former Georgia running back Nick Chubb is a rising star in the NFL and he’s only 24 years old.

He just finished as the second leading rusher in the league and is widely viewed as one of the best ball carriers in pro football.

CBSSports recently ranked the top 25 NFL players who will begin the 2020 season under the age of 25, and included Chubb on its list.

The Cleveland Browns star checked in at No. 20 on and was the fifth highest ranked running back behind Christian McCaffrey (No. 8), Ezekiel Elliot (No. 15), Saquon Barkley (No. 17), and Alvin Kamara (No. 18).

Here’s what CBSSports wrote about Chubb:

Chubb is yet another example of how teams don’t really know how to evaluate players in the draft. In the 2018 NFL Draft, the Browns grabbed Chubb with the third pick in the second round. Which means Chubb was the fourth running back off the board. The three running backs taken before him? Saquon Barkley, Rashaad Penny, and Sony Michel. Only Barkley is a better player than Chubb, but considering where they were drafted (No. 2 overall compared to No. 35), it’s Chubb who represents better value. Put another way, the Giants would’ve been better off drafting someone else (they had a ton of options) at No. 2 and then getting Chubb at No. 34. Through two seasons, Chubb has totaled 2,917 yards and 18 touchdowns from scrimmage while averaging 5.3 yards per touch. In that span, he ranks fifth in yards from scrimmage among all running backs.

Cleveland Browns playoff odds and predicted total wins: NFL futures picks and best bets

Assessing the betting odds of the Cleveland Browns making the 2020 NFL playoffs and predicting their exact win total.

Will the Cleveland Browns make the 2020 NFL playoffs? Below, we look at the BetMGM betting odds and make our pick. We also predict their exact win total for the upcoming season.

Will the Cleveland Browns make the 2020 NFL playoffs?

Yes: +125 | No: –150

The Browns entered the 2019 season with a lot of hype, but the winds were quickly lost from their sails with a 43-13 blowout loss at home in Week 1, and a very slow start in the first month. They’ll look for improvement, but it’s a rather tall order in a division with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. Still, the team had a nice draft and made a few free agent moves to shore up some weak spots.

The +125 odds for the Browns to make the playoffs seem rather high, as Cleveland faces a difficult schedule, including a season opener at Baltimore. The best bet is NO (-150), and you don’t have to eat much chalk to win. A $10 bet returns a profit of just $6.67.

How many games will the Cleveland Browns win in 2020? Bands

BAND ODDS
0-4 Wins +3000
5-8 Wins -120
9-12 Wins -105
13-16 Wins +4000

The Browns have the potential to get off to a rather quick start if they can handle their business at home. The first two home games at FirstEnergy Stadium are vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 and the Washington Redskins in Week 3. Unfortunately for the Browns, they also have two road games against the Ravens (Week 1) and Dallas Cowboys (Week 4), which will be rather daunting.

It’s likely the Browns should be able to split the two games, although they’ve been known to blow games they’re expected to win, too. After a so-so start, the wins will be fewer and farther between in the second half. They’ll be squarely within the 5-8 WINS (-120) band.

A $10 bet would return a profit of $8.33.

How many games will the Cleveland Browns win in 2020? Exact number

Looking at the schedule, they face a tough road ahead in the AFC North against the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers. They did stun the Ravens in Baltimore last season, however. The Bengals and Steelers each figure to be improved, though, and that’s not good news for the Brownies.

A split with the Bengals and Steelers, with a sweep at the hands of the Ravens is likely inside the division. A split of their eight home games is a reasonable expectation, with losses to playoff-hopeful teams like the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles in the back-end of the home slate. On the road, they might be able to scratch out two or three victories against the Bengals and perhaps the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. But anyone who is a fan of the brown and orange knows nothing is a slam-dunk certainty.

Here, the best bet is to pick the Browns to win SIX GAMES (+650), along with thumping the UNDER 8.5 WINS (-115) rather hard.

If UGA was fielding a starting team based on current NFL players, here’s what it would look like

We assembled a starting lineup full of former Georgia football players who are currently on NFL rosters.

Georgia continues to be one of college football’s leading producers of NFL talent, with seven players being taken in the 2020 NFL Draft.

At almost every position does Georgia have an NFL star — linebacker and running back being the most notable.

From veteran passer Matthew Stafford to new Falcons back Todd Gurley, to rookie kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, former Georgia Bulldogs look to put up big numbers again in 2020.

We’ve gone through an exercise of picking the best at each position to field a starting team of former Georgia players, all from a current pool of those currently on NFL rosters.

Remember, free agents did not make the team.

So, let’s get it started shall we?

2020 AFC North Division Predictions: Best bets for who will win and exact standings

Looking at the NFL betting odds to win the AFC North Division in 2020 and predicting the exact order of the standings.

The Baltimore Ravens won the AFC North Division in 2019 but will they be able to repeat? Below, we look at the BetMGM betting odds for the AFC North Division in 2020 and make our best bets for who’ll win the division title and predict the exact order of the division standings.

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Odds last updated Tuesday, May 19 at 3:25 a.m. ET.

2020 AFC North Division bets: Who will win?

Here are the odds for first place in the division:

  • Baltimore Ravens -200
  • Pittsburgh Steelers +320
  • Cleveland Browns +500
  • Cincinnati Bengals +2500

After winning the division with a 14-2 record last season in which QB Lamar Jackson broke out and was a unanimous MVP, the Ravens are still the favorites. They improved even more on defense this offseason. This is an easy call. Take the RAVENS (-200).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet the Ravens to win the AFC North will return a profit of $5 if they do so.

2020 AFC North Division bets: Who will finish second?

Here are the odds for second place:

  • Steelers +140
  • Ravens +205
  • Browns +225
  • Bengals +1200

With the return of QB Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers should be in a position to make it back to the postseason after narrowly missing in 2019. The defense is still solid and they will have better play at quarterback. The Browns are tough to trust with a shortened offseason and a new head coach. Take the STEELERS (+140).

A $10 bet would profit $14 here.

2020 AFC North Division bets: Who will finish third?

Here are the odds for third place.

  • Browns +105
  • Steelers +170
  • Bengals +525
  • Ravens +800

The Bengals still can’t be trusted to be anything more than last in the division. That leaves the Browns, who were 6-10 last season. They added protection for QB Baker Mayfield, so they should be at least as good as last year. Take the BROWNS (+105).

A $10 bet profits $10.50 if the Browns finish third.

2020 AFC North Division bets: Who will finish fourth?

Here are the odds for last place in the division.

  • Bengals -556
  • Browns +500
  • Steelers +900
  • Ravens +8000

The Bengals will have a rookie quarterback. While they were the worst team in the league last year, they improved this offseason, but in a division that seems to be easy to predict. This bet earns you virtually nothing, but the only bet you should make are the BENGALS (-556).

A $10 bet only profits $1.80.

2020 AFC North Division bets: Exact order of standings

For predicting the exact outcome of the division, this isn’t a big value, but it is pretty safe. Take the combo of the Ravens-Steelers-Browns-Bengals at +190 and expect to win at the end of the season. A $10 bet would profit $19.

Why Browns fans should be excited about Jedrick Wills

The Browns filled their biggest need with a blue-chip prospect by landing Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills in the 2020 NFL Draft

The Browns made it a point of emphasis to improve their offensive line this offseason, and they did exactly that by selecting Alabama offensive tackle Jedrick Wills with the No. 10 pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

The 6-foot-4, 312-pound Wills played as a right tackle with the Crimson Tide, but he projects well on the blind side if Cleveland so envisions him playing there. A well-rounded tackle prospect who stakes a claim to being the most talented offensive lineman in the 2020 class, Wills is a polished player who uses his hands effectively, timing and placing his strikes with acute precision. He keeps his pads low and is able to maintain a low center of gravity, maximizing his anchor strength and keeping good balance.

Wills’ physical tools give him some intriguing value at the next level, as well. He is a solid athlete who moves around with pretty good body control and lateral quickness for his size. His strength is admirable, as he latches onto defenders with an imposing grip and has the raw power to manhandle an opponent at the point of attack, as well as the force in his lower body to keep his legs churning and drive defenders back. Combine that strength with his red-hot motor, and Wills projects to be a high-quality tackle in the NFL.

The Browns added Jack Conklin in free agency, and while the former Titans starter will shore up the right tackle spot, they still needed an improvement at the other tackle position. If all goes well, Wills should be able to start right away at left tackle and give Cleveland an anchor at that position that they’ve lacked since Joe Thomas retired after the 2017 season.

James Harrison says Mike Tomlin gave him ‘an envelope’ after being fined for hard hit on Georgia great Mohamed Massaquoi

NFL LB James Harrison talked 2010 hit on Cleveland Browns Mohamed Massaquoi, a UGA football great. Not a good look for Pittsburgh Steelers.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was one of the hardest hitting players in the game during his 15 year NFL career.

He delivered a number of cringe-worthy hits, but maybe none worse than his 2010 helmet-to-helmet one on former Georgia wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, who was playing for the Cleveland Browns at the time.

You can watch a replay of it here.

That hit resulted in a $75,000 fine from the NFL.

On May 6, Harrison told Barstool’s “Going Deep” podcast that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin handed him an envelope following the hit.

“Listen, everything I love, on my daddy’s grave, I hit that man with about, max, 50 percent of what I had, and I just hit because I wanted him to let loose of the ball. If I had known they were going to fine me $75,000, I would have tried to kill him. Dude, I’m telling you, 75?

“I ain’t going to lie to you. When that happened, right? The G-est thing Mike Tomlin ever did, he handed me an envelope after that. I ain’t going to say what, but he handed me an envelope after that.”

The comment led to plenty of speculation from NFL fans that Tomlin had a system similar to the Saints’ “Bountygate” in place.

The hit actually did not get flagged in that game and the $75k fine was eventually reduced to $50k. As for Massaquoi, he suffered a concussion on that play.

On Friday, Harrison posted on Instagram to clarify that Tomlin never paid him for that hit.

“Wow y’all really comparing what I said to BOUNTYGATE?!?,” Harrison wrote. “Mike T. Has NEVER paid me for hurting someone or TRYING to hurt someone or put a bounty on ANYBODY! If you knew the full story of what happened back then you’d know that BS fine for a Legal Play wasn’t even penalized during the game.”

In response to the story, Steelers president Art Rooney II disputed Harrison’s initial claim.

Massaquoi is one of the greatest receivers in Georgia history. From Charlotte, North Carolina, he came to UGA in 2005. By the time he left in 2008, he had 158 catches for 2,282 yards and 16 touchdowns, which ranks seventh best in school history.

Picked in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Massaquoi played four seasons with Browns. He left Cleveland after the 2012 season, and in August of 2013, he was released by two teams – the Jaguars and the Jets.

He finished his NFL career with 118 receptions for 1,745 yards and seven touchdowns.

Chicago Bears’ 2020 preseason schedule is set

The Bears finalized their 2020 preseason schedule on Friday, which includes games against the Browns, Broncos, 49ers and Titans.

The Chicago Bears finalized their 2020 preseason schedule with dates and times on Friday, which includes home games against the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, as well as road games against the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.

The Bears will open their preseason slate against the Browns on August 15 before heading to Denver to face the Broncos, who they’ll hold joint practices with, on August 22. Chicago will host San Francisco in the third preseason game — the dress rehearsal game — before closing things out against Tennessee on Sept. 3.

In the past, preseason has meant little to head coach Matt Nagy, in terms of his starters. He’s typically rested his starters while most teams give their starters some preseason reps to get in the swing of things. Well, preseason is going to look different for the Bears following a disappointing 2019 season.

Preseason will mean a little something more this year, as there are several roster battles that are expected to last well into preseason. Most notably, the quarterback competition between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, which will dominate offseason talk.

But there will also be competitions to watch at cornerback, safety, right guard, receiver and even kicker. So, unlike over the last two seasons, Bears fans are going to be more interested in how the preseason shakes out.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ 2020 preseason schedule:

Week Date Opponent Time (CT)
1 Sat. 8/15 vs. Cleveland Browns Noon
2 Sat. 8/22 at Denver Broncos 8:05 p.m.
3 Sat. 8/29 vs. San Francisco 49ers Noon
4 Thurs. 9/3 at Tennessee Titans 7:00 p.m.

Ranking the new uniforms 7 NFL teams will wear in 2020

How do the 7 NFL teams’ new uniforms rank?

Seven teams will make new fashion statements whenever the 2020 NFL season gets underway. Who hit the mark? Who missed it with their new threads?

7. Los Angeles Rams

 Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The helmet is pretty cool. The bone-colored uniforms and digits are incredibly awful. They could be the worst in the league and that is saying a lot.
