Georgia Bulldogs freshman quarterback Carson Beck enrolled early this year at UGA. Beck was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020. Additionally, before coming to Athens, Beck competed at the 2019 Elite 11 camp.

Beck has an opportunity this season in Athens with the departure of Buffalo Bills quarterback Jake Fromm. He will compete with Jamie Newman, JT Daniels, and more for the starting job.

Georgia’s quarterback position has impressive depth this season. That being said, there may be too many mouths to feed in the quarterback room. Georgia will have several options ready to step up if the starter suffers an injury.

Carson Beck committed to the University of Georgia almost a week after receiving a scholarship offer from Kirby Smart and company. He announced his commitment via his Twitter account:

Georgia fans won’t be happy with SEC QB Rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs are moving past the Jake Fromm era. Where does Jamie Newman rank among SEC quarterbacks?

The Georgia Bulldogs are moving on beyond the Jake Fromm era in Athens. With Fromm headed to the NFL, Jamie Newman who transferred from Wake Forest, four-star quarterback Carson Beck, and D’Wan Mathis, who has been cleared to play, will all compete for the starting quarterback job.

Where does UGA’s quarterback stack up with the rest of the SEC?

Jamie Newman is predicted to win the starting job. Throughout the SEC there isn’t as clear of quarterback hierarchy heading into the 2020 season. Before the 2019 season, it was assumed that Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow, and Jake Fromm were the best QBs in the SEC. Nobody saw Burrow’s Heisman season coming, but he was preseason third team All-SEC.

Here’s how SEC Mike and Shane ranked the league’s quarterbacks:

Both guys rated Florida’s Kyle Trask as the SEC’s top quarterback. Trask looked solid last season, but it is hard to envision him as the SEC’s best quarterback. I think the top-rated QB in the class of 2020, Bryce Young, will emerge at Alabama and overtake Mac Jones.

Jamie Newman comes in at fifth and ninth in the rankings. Ninth is definitely too low. Newman made honorable mention in the ACC’s all-conference team and is upgrading his team’s talent. Newman is more impressive than Auburn’s Bo Nix, who will improve in 2020, but struggle to complete passes. Newman could be anywhere from first to fourth in my eyes, with Kellen Mond, Kyle Trask and Bryce Young coming ahead of Newman.

Potential dark horses to watch: LSU’s Myles Brennan, Kentucky’s Terry Wilson, Ole Miss’s John Rhys Plumlee, and Mississippi State’s K.J. Costello. Costello will put up huge numbers under Mike Leach.

In all, six players played football in Florida last year, three in Texas and three in Louisiana. Four players came from out West and two from up in the Eastern Seaboard.

In his four year head coaching career to-date, Kirby Smart’s Dawgs created a growing full-country impression by winning the SEC, winning three of four at the big neutral site game in Jacksonville, beating Notre Dame twice, playing in three straight SEC championship games, winning a Rose Bowl and making a national championship game.

One clear goal remains.

Texas AM officially announces hiring of former Georgia OC James Coley

Texas A&M officially announced the hiring of former Georgia football OC James Coley.

On Tuesday, Texas A&M officially announced that the Aggies have hired former Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley.

Coley will join Jimbo Fisher’s staff in College Station as the program’s tight ends coach.

“I have known James since our days at LSU and Florida State,” Fisher said. “He is an outstanding coach and top notch recruiter, but an even better person. His creativity and coaching are great additions to our staff at Texas A&M.”

During his tenure in Athens, Coley graduated from a position coach to a co-offensive coordinator with Jim Chaney to a full-time offensive coordinator. He was demoted following a lackluster 2019 season during which the Dawgs’ defense stole the show.

Prior to the Bulldogs’ Sugar Bowl win against Baylor earlier this month, Coley admitted some of his shortcomings as OC:

“You know what? I’ve got to do a better job. I’m looking at myself hard, criticizing myself, and busting my tail to get those things better.”

Georgia brought in Todd Monken from the Cleveland Browns to be the program’s new offensive coordinator.

Coley served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Miami (Fla.) from 2013-15.  Prior to joining the Hurricane staff, he worked with Fisher as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach (2010-12) and tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator (2008-09) at Florida State.

At FSU, Coley worked with Fisher to mentor three first round draft picks in quarterbacks Christian Ponder, EJ Manuel, and Jameis Winston.  The Seminole offenses were high-powered, averaging 31.4 points per game in 2010, 30.6 in 2011, and 39.3 in 2012.

Former Georgia football OC James Coley set to join SEC foe

UGA now looks to hire a replacement QB coach to instruct Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman and freshman enrollee Carson Beck. 

After former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken was hired to perform the same role at the University of Georgia, former Bulldogs’ OC James Coley’s future was up in the air.

Is Coley now a co-offensive coordinator? Will he go back to coaching quarterbacks? Will he coach receivers?

It would appear none of these hypotheticals will come to fruition. James Coley will be the next tight ends coach at Texas A&M.

Bulldog faithful were introduced to Coley during Kirby Smart’s inaugural season as Top Dawg; Coley was hired as wide receivers’ coach in 2016 following Mark Richt’s removal in late 2015.

So what will Georgia football’s offense look like next year? Without its beloved offensive line coach Pittman and its mildly maligned offensive coordinator Coley, it’s difficult to predict anything aside from “eh, maybe just a little different.”

In terms of points per game against conference opponents, hopefully it’s a lot different.

Georgia will now look to hire a replacement quarterbacks coach to instruct Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman and freshman enrollee Carson Beck.

Georgia football: A 2020 recruiting summary so far

Georgia football has jumped to the #3 spot on the 2020 national football recruiting rankings. They trail only Clemson and Alabama.

The Georgia Bulldogs have already had a very successful offseason recruiting wise.

The Dawgs now have three 5-star commits signed and still have more to go after.

5-star athlete/tight end Darnell Washington has signed with Georgia already and is ranked as the #1 2020 athlete and #6 overall prospect, on ESPN’s top 300.  The 6 foot 7.5 inch TE will bring a whole new dimension to the Bulldog receiving corps and will provide amazing protection to whoever is in the driving seat under center for Georgia’s offense next season.

5-star outside linebacker Mekhail Sherman has also signed with the Dawgs and is ranked as the #1 OLB recruit in the 2020 class.  Sherman is 6’3″ 234 lbs and his highlight tapes are scary good.  Sherman will help beef up an already strong UGA LB group and was a huge signing for Georgia.

The last 5-star so far for the 2020 class is offensive tackle Broderick Jones.  Jones is a 6’5″ 275 lb offensive lineman out of Lithonia, Georgia that could likely battle for a starting spot on next years team.  With Andrew Thomas and Isaiah Wilson projected to go very early in the 2020 NFL Draft, there will be a massive hole to fill on the Dawgs O-Line, and Jones could be the man to fill that void.  Jones is ranked as the #2 OT in the 2020 class.

4-star RB signee Kendall Milton is the #6 ranked RB in the 2020 class and will play a major role in helping Georgia’s run game when D’Andre Swift departs for the NFL, currently favored to be the 1st running back selected in the 2020 Draft.

4-star OT Tate Ratledge will aid Broderick Jones in making up for some big offensive line losses this offseason.

4-star QB Carson Beck will be on the hunt for the starting job if Fromm decides to forgo his senior year and head to the NFL.  He will likely have to beat out Stetson Bennett and D’Wan Mathis (if healthy).

4-star safety Major Burns, who flipped from LSU late in his commitment will hope to step in and replace J.R. Reed, who will also be entering to the NFL Draft.

The Dawgs currently sit at #3 on the national 2020 recruiting list with three 5-stars, fourteen 4-stars, and three 3-stars all signed.

Could Georgia football be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

Could the Georgia Bulldogs be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

The Georgia Bulldogs are off to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, after finishing the season 11-2, with an SEC Championship Game loss to LSU.

Though junior quarterback Jake Fromm could very well return for his senior year in Athens, there’s always the possibility he leaves for the NFL and does not come back.

What would that mean for the Bulldogs? Well, Georgia currently has 2020 four-star quarterback Carson Beck committed to join the program, with 2019 four-star dual-threat Dwan Mathis sliding under the radar after surgery to remove a brain cyst this offseason. In addition, the Dawgs gained another transfer in Nevada freshman Austin Kirksey, who will walk on next year in Athens.

That’s three talented quarterbacks with little college football experience and still a lot of question marks. Say Fromm leaves and that is the quarterback room you are walking into. The Dawgs would essentially have to land a transfer off the market, which is what we’ll now discuss.

Joey Gatewood is already off the board and bound for Kentucky, so here are Georgia’s top options as of now.

  • Utah State – Jordan Love
  • Houston – D’Eriq King
  • Ole Miss- John Rhys Plumlee* (Not currently in the portal)

While Plumlee has yet to enter the portal, Georgia bringing in former Ole Miss coach Matt Luke will certainly strengthen the depth of rumors on Plumlee to Athens.

Man, would that be nice.

As of right now, Fromm has yet to declare for the NFL Draft or announce his intentions of staying in Athens, but he is being graded as a second-night draft pick by multiple highly respected analysts.

Would that be good enough for the three-time SEC East Champion, who has led the Dawgs to three-straight New Year’s Six Bowls? Time will tell.

The rumor mill will keep on going and the message boards rumbling, but Fromm is still the Bulldogs’ quarterback. Of course, things could all change as soon as tomorrow, but for now, this is where Georgia stands.

To add more traction to the possibility of gaining a transfer quarterback, Sports Illustrated’s Brooks Austin is reporting that King and Love recently followed Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley on Twitter.

Remember, nothing is confirmed at the moment, but there’s a pretty good chance the Dawgs land one of the three guys listed above if Fromm were to leave for the draft.
