With JT Daniels battling injury, Carson Beck might get the start: Who is he?

JT Daniels is reportedly battling an upper-body injury. If he misses Saturday’s game, expect Carson Beck to get the start. Here’s some info on the redshirt freshman passer.

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is reportedly dealing with an upper body injury that has escalated his status to “questionable” for Saturday’s home-opener against UAB.

Daniels may end up playing. He played the entire Clemson game with the injury apparently — DawgNation is reporting that Daniels suffered the injury in the preseason during Georgia’s second scrimmage.

Daniels’ status is questionable for this Saturday’s game. He could very well end up starting and playing, as DawgNation’s Mike Griffith reports that Daniels first picked up the injury during Georgia’s second scrimmage.

But it’s UAB. Is it worth the risk?

I don’t think it is and I have a feeling the Georgia coaches would agree. No matter who UGA puts at quarterback, the Dawgs should have no issue winning this game. The smart thing to do would be to sit your superstar quarterback. It’s a long season.

If Daniels is to sit this one out, expect Carson Beck to get the start at quarterback. If you follow recruiting closely you are already familiar with Beck. But for those who are just now learning of the backup quarterback, here’s some information to get you up to speed.

Carson Beck, Quarterback (No. 15):

Class: Redshirt Freshman

Height: 6-4

Weight: 215 pounds

Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida

High School: Mandarin High School

As a recruit:

Beck enrolled early at the University of Georgia. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2020 out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

Beck ranked as the nation’s No. 234 overall player and the No. 5 ranked pro-style passer.

Additionally, before coming to Athens, Beck competed at the prestigious 2019 Elite 11 camp.

Freshman season:

Beck picked up a redshirt as a freshman. He played late against the Missouri Tigers in 2020, but did not have a chance to throw a pass. We expect to see him more often this year, even if he does not make the start against UAB.

Played well at G-Day:

Redshirt freshman quarterback Beck got the majority of the reps for the Black team in the spring game. Beck gained valuable experience and played pretty well, finishing the contest with 236 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He went 22 of 31 on his passing attempts.

“I’m pleased with his progress. I think he got better,” Smart said following G-Day. “Carson didn’t always have the focus he needed last year as a freshman in terms of preparation, academics, on the field, off the field, in the meeting room.

“Now since we started this spring, he’s taken notes, he’s got command of it better. He’s doing better academically in the classroom. He’s trying to take a step forward and do some good things.”

Will Beck begin the season as Georgia’s No. 2 quarterback? He will face some talented opposition. Georgia’s quarterback position has impressive depth this season with Brock Vandagriff, Carson Beck and Stetson Bennett ready to step in if J.T. Daniels suffers an injury.

Quarterback JT Daniels (No. 18):

Class: Redshirt Sophomore

Height: 6-3

Weight: 210 pounds

Hometown: Irvine, California

High School: Mater Dei High School

Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore quarterback JT Daniels comes to UGA after spending the first two seasons of his career at USC. Daniels transferred from the Trojans following an ACL injury he suffered during the 2019 season opener. Daniels is still rehabbing the injury and isn’t fully cleared to play as of late Aug. 2020.

Daniels has an opportunity this season in Athens with the departure of Buffalo Bills quarterback Jake Fromm. He will compete with Jamie Newman, Carson Beck, and more for the starting job. The NCAA granted him immediate illegibility on his transfer.

Georgia’s quarterback position has more depth this season than during the 2019 season. Georgia will have several options ready to step up if the starter suffers an injury. Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman is projected to be the starter.

In three seasons at the prestigious Mater Dei High School, JT Daniels averaged more than 50 touchdown passes and 4,000 passing yards per season. Daniels was rated as the third ranked quarterback in his recruiting class behind Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields.

Daniels has solid experience from his days at USC. In 2018, Daniels threw for 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Trojans. At the very least he will provide the Georgia Bulldogs with a solid, experienced option as a back up. He’s got the talent to earn the starting role this season and beyond.

Texas AM officially announces hiring of former Georgia OC James Coley

Texas A&M officially announced the hiring of former Georgia football OC James Coley.

On Tuesday, Texas A&M officially announced that the Aggies have hired former Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley.

Coley will join Jimbo Fisher’s staff in College Station as the program’s tight ends coach.

“I have known James since our days at LSU and Florida State,” Fisher said. “He is an outstanding coach and top notch recruiter, but an even better person. His creativity and coaching are great additions to our staff at Texas A&M.”

During his tenure in Athens, Coley graduated from a position coach to a co-offensive coordinator with Jim Chaney to a full-time offensive coordinator. He was demoted following a lackluster 2019 season during which the Dawgs’ defense stole the show.

Prior to the Bulldogs’ Sugar Bowl win against Baylor earlier this month, Coley admitted some of his shortcomings as OC:

“You know what? I’ve got to do a better job. I’m looking at myself hard, criticizing myself, and busting my tail to get those things better.”

Georgia brought in Todd Monken from the Cleveland Browns to be the program’s new offensive coordinator.

From TAMU:

Coley served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Miami (Fla.) from 2013-15.  Prior to joining the Hurricane staff, he worked with Fisher as offensive coordinator and tight ends coach (2010-12) and tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator (2008-09) at Florida State.

At FSU, Coley worked with Fisher to mentor three first round draft picks in quarterbacks Christian Ponder, EJ Manuel, and Jameis Winston.  The Seminole offenses were high-powered, averaging 31.4 points per game in 2010, 30.6 in 2011, and 39.3 in 2012.

Former Georgia football OC James Coley set to join SEC foe

UGA now looks to hire a replacement QB coach to instruct Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman and freshman enrollee Carson Beck.

After former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken was hired to perform the same role at the University of Georgia, former Bulldogs’ OC James Coley’s future was up in the air.

Is Coley now a co-offensive coordinator? Will he go back to coaching quarterbacks? Will he coach receivers?

It would appear none of these hypotheticals will come to fruition. James Coley will be the next tight ends coach at Texas A&M.

Bulldog faithful were introduced to Coley during Kirby Smart’s inaugural season as Top Dawg; Coley was hired as wide receivers’ coach in 2016 following Mark Richt’s removal in late 2015.

So what will Georgia football’s offense look like next year? Without its beloved offensive line coach Pittman and its mildly maligned offensive coordinator Coley, it’s difficult to predict anything aside from “eh, maybe just a little different.”

In terms of points per game against conference opponents, hopefully it’s a lot different.

Georgia will now look to hire a replacement quarterbacks coach to instruct Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman and freshman enrollee Carson Beck.
