PFF: Jets are best-landing spot for Lions’ Carlton Davis III in free agency

PFF: Jets are best-landing spot for Lions’ Carlton Davis III in free agency

The connection is clear, but despite that, the football analytical folks at Pro Football Focus are still taking that route as it relates to Calton Davis III.

Fresh off a positive season under Aaron Glenn as his defensive coordinator with the Lions, PFF suggests that Davis should follow the coach to the Jets.

Davis, an upcoming free agent, ranks as PFF’s 21st best in the entire NFL.

In 13 games played in 2024, Davis had 56 tackles, including two for loss, with two interceptions and 11 passes defended.

PFF’s breakdown on Davis to the Jets can be found below:

Before a broken jaw in Week 15 cut his season short, Davis was a standout in the Lions secondary. Through 15 weeks, his 11 forced incompletions ranked ninth in the NFL, highlighting his ability to disrupt opposing passing attacks.

Reuniting with former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, now the Jets’ head coach, could be the perfect move for Davis. Glenn’s aggressive schemes, which often rely on press coverage, play to Davis’ strengths. He allowed only seven open targets in press situations despite playing a significant number of press snaps, showcasing his ability to thrive in a physical, one-on-one role.

NFC playoff picture: Lions RB David Montgomery could miss rest of season with MCL injury

Lions RB David Montgomery could miss rest of season with MCL injury

The Eagles (12-2) earned an impressive 27-13 win over the Steelers (10-4) in Week 15, and then they received even better news when the Buffalo Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 48-42 at Ford Field.

The win dropped Detroit to 12-2 on the season, keeping Philadelphia within striking distance of the No. 1 seed. Because Philadelphia’s two losses came to NFC teams, the Eagles would need to win out and have the Lions lose to the Bears, 49ers, or Vikings in their next three games. The Vikings would need to lose to either the Bears, Seahawks, Packers, or Lions down the stretch for Philadelphia to earn the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage.

The news that star running back David Montgomery could miss the remainder of the season with an MCL injury adds more uncertainty to the Detriots’ stretch run.

On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Lions would be without starting defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s loss to Buffalo, ending his season.

Schefter reports that starting cornerback Carlton Davis III suffered a fractured jaw in Sunday’s loss. Davis will undergo surgery and be sidelined indefinitely. Head coach Dan Campbell said the Lions also lost cornerback Khalil Dorsey to a season-ending ankle injury during Sunday’s game.

The injuries are the latest setbacks for the Lions’ defense, with 13 defensive players on the injured reserve list entering Sunday’s game. That includes star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in Week 6.

The loss to the Bills snapped the Lions’ 11-game winning streak. The Lions (12-2) are still in the top spot in the NFC playoff bracket, holding the tiebreaker over the Philadelphia Eagles (12-2) based on winning percentage in conference games, with three games to go.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen was 23-34 passing for 362 yards (10.6 avg), two touchdowns, and a 122 passer rating; Allen also had ten strong carries for 69 yards (6.9 avg) and two touchdowns.

Buffalo running back James Cook had 14 carries for 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Bills wide receiver Ty Johnson exploded for five catches for 114 yards.

While the Detroit defense struggled on the day, the Lions offense exploded. Jared Goff, who passed for 494 yards and five touchdowns, went 38-59. Amon-Ra St. Brown exploded with 14 catches for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

Detroit’s dynamic duo at running back, Jahmyr Gibbs, was held to 8 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown, while David Montgomery was held to five carries for four yards.

Carlton Davis tallies first multi-interception game of career

The former Tiger led all cornerbacks with a 91.3 PFF grade in Week 10

Former Auburn Tiger turned longtime NFL veteran Carlton Davis III achieved something he had never done during his seven year professional career last Sunday. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers second round pick, who is spending his first season with the Detroit Lions after an offseason trade, tallied a pair of interceptions in a victory over the Texans on Sunday night, giving the 27-year-old his first multi-pick game of his career.

The pair of interceptions led all NFL defensive players in week 10. Davis III’s PFF grade of 91.3 was the highest among all cornerbacks in the league, while his opposing passer rating of 9.2 was second among all corners. The second of his two interceptions was partially important and impressive, as Davis III baited Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud into throwing an end zone shot to Tank Dell. The 27-year-old closed on the ball immediately, intercepting Stroud in the end zone to end a Texans scoring threat.

While the former Tiger has paved out a phenomenal career in the league, he’s never been known to be a ballhawk. The pair of interceptions improved Davis III’s all time total to just 11 over his six-plus seasons in the NFL. He now has three seasons of multiple interceptions recorded. He intercepted the opposing quarterback twice in 2023 after tallying a career high 4 interceptions in Tampa Bay’s 2020 Super Bowl winning season.

The shut down cornerback never accomplished a multi-interception game during his three years on the Plains either, although that was mainly due to the fact the opposition refused to throw the ball in his direction because of his dominance. His pair of interceptions helped the Lions improve to a franchise best 8-1 on the season. The former Tiger is all but guaranteed to get back to the playoffs yet again, giving himself a chance to earn a second Super Bowl ring.

Former Bucs CB Carlton Davis III off to rough start with Lions

Carlton Davis III is off to a rough start in his new home with the Detroit Lions, and Bucs fans don’t seem surprised by it.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis III is off to a rough start in his new home with the Detroit Lions, and Bucs fans don’t seem surprised by it.

After spending his first six years in Tampa, general manager Jason Licht decided it was time to move on from Davis, and sent him along with two sixth-round picks (2024 and 2025) to the Lions in exchange for a third-round pick. During his tenure with the Bucs, Davis showed flashes of being a quality starter- when healthy. The oft-injured cornerback has yet to log a full 17 (or 16) game season, seeing action in 14 games in 2019 and 2020 being his healthiest seasons.

Davis only has nine career interceptions and is routinely in the Top 10 in terms of yards allowed, and that is not even playing in a full-season slate. The slow start for the seven-year veteran in Detroit is proving more of the same, which is why Licht and the Bucs were okay transitioning away from Davis, his $14.5M contract, and added two draft picks along with him.

Through three games, Davis has allowed 224 receiving yards on 18 receptions, the most among CBs in the NFL. Those numbers also come with a 136.2 allowed QB passer rating, which is the seventh-highest. The kicker is that he is not seeing as many snaps defending opposing top wide receivers for the Lions, who rookie Terrion Arnold is currently leading.

It’s safe to say that with the emergence of Zyon McCollum, Licht made yet another solid roster move for his team. McCollum has only allowed four receptions on 12 targets for 52 yards, matching up against WRs like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Courtland Sutton.

2024 NFL mock draft: Bucs replace Carlton Davis III with 1st-round pick

See who the Tampa Bay Buccaneers land in this updated first-round projection for the 2024 NFL draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won big when they acquired a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft in a trade with the Detroit Lions, but they also created a hole in their starting lineup by sending away cornerback Carlton Davis III.

That hole is filled by the latest 2024 NFL mock draft from CBS Sports, which has the Bucs spending the No. 26 overall pick in the first round on Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Here’s what CBS Sports’ Kyle Stackpole said about the selection:

The Buccaneers shipped Carlton Davis to the Lions, which made sense based on Davis’ price tag and Tampa’s previous moves (re-signing Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans). Kool-Aid McKinstry isn’t as highly touted as former Alabama teammate Terrion Arnold, but he has all the tools to develop into a consistent outside corner.

McKinstry does have the size and physical tools that the current Bucs regime have always coveted at the position, and his skill set would be a strong fit in Todd Bowles’ scheme.

Tampa Bay still needs multiple upgrades along the interior of the offensive line, but if they don’t like the value there, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them spend their top pick on a replacement for Davis.

Former Auburn football CB Carlton Davis traded to Detroit Lions

After six years of playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former Auburn football cornerback Carlton Davis III is headed to the Detroit Lions

The NFL free agency period has begun for 2024, and many teams have made dramatic moves that will set the stage for next season. Many stars are going to wear different uniforms, which will create a lot of noise for next season.

One of those moves includes former Auburn cornerback [autotag]Carlton Davis III[/autotag], who was part of the Tigers’ roster from 2015-17. After spending the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Davis has been traded to the Detroit Lions.

The former Auburn star was traded with multiple sixth-round draft picks in exchange for a third-round pick.

From 2018-2023, Davis appeared in 76 games, racking up 324 total tackles to go along with three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and nine interceptions.

While with the Tigers, he started in all three of his seasons at cornerback, making the second team on the all-SEC roster in his junior year. He appeared in 38 games, posting 138 total tackles with three forced fumbles and four interceptions.

Davis looks to be the new veteran leader and No. 1 cornerback on the roster heading into his time in Detroit.

Why trading Carlton Davis III is a huge win for the Bucs

Trading cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions is a big win in many ways for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been focused on retaining most of their key free agents so far this offseason, but they made a splash move Monday that sent a key starter elsewhere via trade.

Cornerback Carlton Davis III is heading to the Detroit Lions, along with a pair of sixth-round draft picks, in return for a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

On the surface, this might seem like a puzzling move to some Bucs fans, as the team is creating a hole in their starting lineup by moving on from Davis. But if you look a little deeper, there are plenty of reasons why this draft is a massive win for general manager Jason Licht and his team.

Davis has been a quality starter at times throughout his tenure in Tampa Bay, but he’s also been limited by injuries, and has failed to create a ton of big plays. The former second-round pick out of Auburn has missed 16 games over the past three seasons due to injury, and only has nine career interceptions in six seasons with the Bucs.

David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

On the financial side of things, Davis was set to count $14.5 million against the salary cap in 2024, but with none of that money coming in the form of guarantees, the Bucs don’t have to take on any dead money by trading him to Detroit. That means they get to save that entire amount in salary cap space this season, giving them even more room to keep their best free agents, and even add a few new faces on the open market.

Davis was also heading into the final year of his current contract, and it’s rare that a team is able to get a third-round pick in return for an oft-injured player on an expiring deal.

Yes, this move creates a bigger need at corner, but Zyon McCollum made huge strides last year in his second season, and will likely get first crack at lining up across from Jamel Dean on the outside. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bucs invest an early draft pick in another talented corner, who would then be on a rookie contract for the next four years.

It’s hard to watch a key piece of Tampa Bay’s 2020 Super Bowl team head elsewhere, but in just about every way, this deal is a big victory for the Bucs.

Bucs agree to trade CB Carlton Davis III to the Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trading cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trading cornerback Carlton Davis III to the Detroit Lions, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Tampa Bay is getting the Lions’ third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, while Detroit gets a sixth-rounder in each of the next two drafts along with Davis, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Davis has been a quality starter for the Bucs when healthy, but has missed 16 games over the past three seasons due to injury. He was set to make $14.5 million this season in the final year of his current contract, and he fills the biggest need for the Lions on defense.

This move will allow the Bucs to save more salary cap space, while hopefully finding a cheaper replacement for Davis who will be able to make more splash plays, as well as stay on the field more often.

Eagles eliminated from playoffs after 32-9 loss to Buccaneers

The Eagles are set for a dramatic overhaul following the team’s shocking 32-9 loss to the Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs.

Philadelphia was 0-11 on third and fourth downs combined, tallying 268 total yards on ten offensive drives in a sloppy affair that saw missed tackles and no answer for the Tampa blitz as the Eagles were held to 38 rushing yards on the night.

Baker Mayfield outplayed Jalen Hurts, going 22-36 passing for 337 yards, three touchdowns, and 0 interceptions with a 119 quarterback rating.

Rachaad White was strong on the ground, rushing 18 times for 62 yards on the night.

The Eagles will now head into an uncertain offseason, having lost six of the final seven games played, and an overhaul could include head coach Nick Sirianni with the likes of Jim Harbaugh, Bill Belichick, and others available after mass changes around the league.
