Former Falcons first-round pick Takkarist McKinley among Saints free agent tryouts

Former Falcons first-round pick Takkarist McKinley was among a crowd of Saints free agent tryouts on Tuesday, along with five cornerbacks and a 6-foot-7 tight end:

The New Orleans Saints hosted seven free agents for a round of tryouts on Tuesday, including five cornerbacks — and former Atlanta Falcons first-round pick Takkarist McKinley, a pass-rushing defensive end. With a third spot soon opening up on the 53-man roster once Payton Turner goes on injured reserve, as is expected, the Saints will have room for some new faces after elevating other players from the practice squad.

All of these players look like practice squad candidates, which isn’t unusual. The Saints churn the bottom of their depth chart often throughout the season looking for the right blend of young pros and experienced veterans. It’s interesting that there are so many defensive backs in the building but there haven’t been any major injuries to explain the interest, so maybe they’re just after improved depth or more help on special teams. Here’s what you need to know about each free agent who tried out Tuesday:

Texans sign CB Cameron Dantzler, drop WR Alex Bachman

The Houston Texans signed cornerback Cameron Dantzler and waive-injured receiver Alex Bachman.

The Houston Texans provided more depth for their secondary.

The club announced they signed former Minnesota Vikings, Washington, and Buffalo Bills cornerback Cameron Dantzler.

The former 2020 third-round pick was claimed by Washington off waivers in mid-March. Dantzler spent the month with the NFC East franchise until May 30 when he was released. The Bills signed Dantzler to a one-year contract, but released the former Mississippi State product with an injury settlement early in training camp in late July.

Danztler played 35 games for the Vikings, starting in 26 of them, and collected 149 combined tackles, six tackles for loss, three interceptions, 17 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

As a corresponding move, the Texans waive-injured receiver Alex Bachman. The former Wake Forest wideout caught two passes for 11 yards and a touchdown on six targets as part of his 21 offensive snaps through two preseason games. The Texans also utilized Bachman for 12 special teams reps.

We’re looking at five free agent cornerbacks the Baltimore #Ravens could target after Marlon Humprhey’s foot surgery via @Thacover2NFL

The Ravens have about nine cornerbacks on the roster and two or three safeties who could transition outside after Marlon Humprhey’s foot surgery.

Baltimore reportedly had two cornerbacks in for workouts on Thursday, and the tryouts indicate the GM Eric DeCosta could look to add more depth to the roster.

With the Ravens participating in a walkthrough on Thursday, we’re looking at five free agent cornerbacks the team could target.

Bills waive Cameron Dantzler, sign Kyron Brown

#Bills waive Cameron Dantzler, sign Kyron Brown:

The Buffalo Bills exchanged one cornerback for another.

The team announced on Friday that Cameron Dantzler was waived with an injury designation. In a corresponding move, Kyron Brown was signed.

Dantzler, 24, signed in Buffalo on June 7. It’s unclear his exact injury but he was not practicing on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

Brown, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL draft with the New York Jets. He has mostly featured on the practice squad in his career. Along with the Jets, Brown has spent time on the Dallas Cowboys (2021) and Tennessee Titans (2022) practice squads.

In total, Brown has appeared in four games in his career.

With the three-way battle the Bills have going on at the starting cornerback position between Kaiir Elam, Dane Jackson and Christian Benford, it will be an uphill climb for Brown to make Buffalo’s final roster.

List of Bills players heading into final year of their contract in 2023

List of #Bills players heading into final year of their contract in 2023 (via @TejasVemparala):

The 2023 NFL season has a sense of continued hope and optimism attached to the Buffalo Bills, much like the last couple of years. Could they go all the way? What happens if they don’t?

The desire will continue in Buffalo, but some players could be playing their final year at Highmark Stadium once the season gets rolling.

This leads to a list of players that the team needs to consider signing extensions with based on how the season ends.

Here’s all Bills players heading into the final year of their contract in 2023 (figures via Over The Cap):

Bills sign CB Cameron Dantzler to one-year deal

An addition to the #Bills secondary:

The Buffalo Bills added Cameron Dantzler to their secondary.

The team announced that the cornerback has signed a one-year deal in Buffalo. In a corresponding move, cornerback Kyler McMichael was released by the Bills.

Dantzler, 24, is an intriguing addition. A 2020 third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, he had a strong rookie year. Pro Football Focus graded him a 70.9 overall mark in his first season and 73.8 in his second.

However, injuries started adding up and eventually he lost his starting job with the Vikings because of them.

In March, Dantzler was released by Minnesota and the Washington Commanders claimed him off the waiver wire. Only two months later, the Commanders went on to cut him as well.

Playing a part there was Washington using their first-round selection at the 2023 NFL draft on cornerback Emmanuel Forbes.

In Buffalo, Dantzler will have an opportunity to battle for a depth spot behind starters Tre’Davious White and Kaiir Elam. Current reserve option for the Bills include Dane Jackson, Christian Benford and Cam Lewis.

Dantzler stands at 6-foot-2, which is ideal length for a defensive back. In 35 career games, Dantzler has hauled in three interceptions and broken up 17 passes.

Who is new Commanders safety Terrell Burgess?

What could Burgess bring to the table?

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

The Washington Commanders made some roster moves Tuesday, releasing cornerback Cameron Dantzler after claiming him off waivers in March from the Minnesota Vikings.

The 2020 third-round pick was released ahead of free agency, and the Commanders claimed him. Entering the offseason, cornerback was a primary need for Washington, so taking a chance on Dantzler made plenty of sense.

However, the Commanders used their first two selections in the 2023 NFL draft on defensive backs Emmanuel Forbes and Quan Martin. With Kendall Fuller, Benjamin St-Juste and Danny Johnson already on the roster, Dantzler’s odds of making the roster appeared slim.

Washington signed two players Tuesday, tight end Brandon Dillon and safety Terrell Burgess. Dillon is a replacement for Armani Rogers, who injured his Achilles last week. Dillon is viewed as more of a depth piece behind Logan Thomas, John Bates and Cole Turner.

Burgess is a bit more interesting. Like Dantzler, Burgess was a third-round pick in 2020 by the Los Angeles Rams. Burgess played collegiately at Utah, where he emerged as a starter with a strong senior season.

As a rookie for the Rams in 2020, Burgess played in the first seven games before breaking his ankle and missing the remainder of the season. He appeared in seven games and made tackles and defended one pass as a rookie.

In 2021, Burgess played in 16 games for the Rams, making two starts and recording 10 tackles. Burgess was mostly known for his work on special teams.

In 2022, Burgess appeared in eight games, making one start and finishing with 11 tackles. The Rams released Burgess on Nov. 8, and he signed with the New York Giants practice squad two days later. Two weeks later, the Giants activated Burgess to the main roster, where he played in one game for New York — against the Dallas Cowboys.

While Burgess has yet to make an impact in the NFL, the Commanders clearly see something they like. Burgess is certainly worth a look this summer as the team looks to add depth. In going back to his final season at Utah, Burgess played everywhere during his breakout year.

That type of versatility is something Washington head coach Ron Rivera loves. While the Commanders have their starters lined up at safety, could Burgess force his way onto the roster with a strong summer?

The odds of Burgess making the roster appear long, as he’ll need to earn a spot on special teams.
