247Sports Bowl Predictions – Notre Dame to meet recent foe again?

247Sports released their pre-season bowl projections for college football. If you could, would you sign up for where they project ND to go?

247Sports released their pre-season bowl projections this week and have Notre Dame completing a good but not great season as they project the Fighting Irish to meet Georgia in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

Their write-up doesn’t give any detail of how Notre Dame gets there but one can assume it’d be a 10-2 record that does the trick.  One would assume 11-1 with both Wisconsin, Clemson and a trip to USC on the schedule would have them making a great case to be included in the College Football Playoff, while a 9-3 mark or worse wouldn’t have them in the New Years Six.

Would you be satisfied with this as the end result for Notre Dame football in 2020?

I know every coach and player will state that the mission and goal is to win a national championship and fans certainly want the same.  However, when you look at the defensive line, secondary, wide receivers and running backs you see there are at best questions and at worst issues at several positions on the current roster.

If I made the offer today that you can sign up to have Notre Dame go 10-2 and play in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl do you take that offer or do you think something better is coming?

As I said when I predicted each game of the season a couple weeks back, I think 10-2 is the most likely scenario as we sit here today.  So in my case, no, I wouldn’t sign because I don’t expect worse than that and I’d take my chances on Notre Dame getting a win over either Wisconsin or Clemson before I’d expect a third regular season loss.

Anthony Edwards goes to Warriors in The Ringer’s latest mock draft

Anthony Edwards had a good freshman year with the Georgia Bulldogs last season.

The Golden State Warriors have the best backcourt in the NBA, with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson being primary options for an offense filled with motion.

But having another guard on the roster, especially one who can create his own shot, doesn’t hurt in a league that’s steeped with elite guard play.

The 2020 NBA draft doesn’t have a consensus top pick, but Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman are seen as the top prospects. In The Ringer’s latest mock draft, Kevin O’Connor has the Warriors selecting Georgia guard Edwards at No. 1 overall. The mock draft only consisted of the lottery, and since the lottery’s order isn’t set, The Ringer went from the league’s worst record and up.

Edwards is one of the most athletic players in his class, with his hops making for quality highlight reels. In his lone season with the Bulldogs, Edwards scored 19.1 points per game, grabbed 5.2 rebounds and shot 40.2% from the field.

The Warriors haven’t drafted in the lottery since 2012, when they took former UNC forward Harrison Barnes with the No. 7 overall pick. If the Warriors pick No. 1 overall — and decide to keep their pick — Edwards would be a solid pickup.

He could come off the bench and provide a scoring spark when Curry and Thompson are out.

2012 was the last time the Warriors missed the playoffs. Eight years later, the Warriors are in a new kind of situation. They’re not on the cusp of greatness — they’re trying to maintain it.

Former Georgia football HC Mark Richt dances in family Tik Tok video

Former Georgia football HC Mark Richt showed off some killer dance moves in a recent Tok Tok video.

Coronavirus has been the focus of a majority of news stories this week, but here we have a nice change of pace.

Mark Richt, 60, who coached at Georgia for 15 years, looks like he is enjoying his retirement from being a coach.

Now a college football analyst with the ACC Network, Richt has upped his social media game over the last few months, and on Thursday he tweeted another gem.

Richt posted a video of his family dancing in a Tok Tok video, with the caption: “This is what Jon wanted to do on the evening of his 30th birthday last night!!”

NCAA grants spring season athletes an extra year of eligibility

The NCAA announced student-athletes for spring sports will be granted a waiver for an additional season of eligibility after coronavirus.

Due to the unprecedented affects and uncertainties of the coronavirus, the NCAA shut down the balance of winter sports and cancelled all spring sports this week.

Now the NCAA has announced that student-athletes for spring sports will be granted a waiver for an additional season of eligibility.

“Council leadership agreed that eligibility relief is appropriate for all Divisiion I student-athletes who participated in spring sports,” the NCAA released in a statement. “Details of eligibility relief will be finalized at a later time. Additional issues with the NCAA rules must be addressed, and appropriate governance bodies will work through those in the coming days and weeks.”

The coronavirus is an unprecedented event and to the credit of the NCAA, took immediate and unprecedented measures. Granting the relief to student-athletes does create several logisitcal issues and costs could be substantial. With every sport having scholarship limits, the NCAA will have to elevate scholarship limits for the next four years.

And who and how will that extra year of scholarships be paid by? Most athletic programs are underwater financially and don’t have the means to fund additional scholarships. Will the NCAA step in and help fund those programs?

As for winter sports, particularly men’s and women’s basketball, the committee “will also discuss issues related to seasons of competition” for those athletes who were not able to play in conference and NCAA championships.

With the exception of women’s tennis, spring sport athletes are overwhelmingly on equivalency scholarships and thus additional seasons of playing eligibility would come with an additional cost not only to their athletic departments or the NCAA, should it finance the cost, but to the athletes and their families.

Georgia football DT using Pro-Day to raise money for cancer research

Georgie defensive tackle Michael Barnett has launched his campaign to raise money for pancreatic cancer, a cause that is close to him due to his uncle’s passing.

Barnett, a five-year Bulldog, just wrapped up his last collegiate season and is looking forward to beginning his professional career.

Out of Ridgeville, South Carolina, Barnett is a part of a senior class at Georgia that enjoyed 44 wins, which ties for the most ever in the school’s history.

With his platform on the cusp of becoming even larger, Barnett wants to help raise money for a cause that is very important to him.

He is asking that you make a pledge to donate for every bench press rep that he completes at Georgia’s Pro-Day, which is taking place in March.

The money will be going to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, an organization that is dedicated to fighting pancreatic cancer on research, clinical initiatives, patient services & advocacy.

Barnett explains his mission in his own words here:

Pancreatic Cancer is known as the world’s toughest cancer. Unfortunately, I’ve had first hand experience with that reality. My uncle recently lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. It was really hard to see what he and our family went through, and I want to do what I can to help make sure others have a fighting chance.

That’s why, in my uncle’s honor, as I take the next step toward achieving my NFL dream, I have made an important decision to use my performance at Georgia’s Pro Day to support Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), and their urgent mission to save lives. PanCAN attacks pancreatic cancer on all fronts: research, clinical initiatives, patient services and advocacy.

Please join me by making your pledge. Together we can bring hope to the pancreatic cancer community!

Memo to ESPN: UGA football legends Trippi and Sinkwich need to be included on any all-time greats list

After we reviewed ESPN’s major blunder in relegating Georgia legend Herschel Walker to runner up in their 150 Greatest College Football Players poll, I started searching the list for Georgia Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich and the finest athlete in Bulldog football history, Charles “Charley” Trippi.

As I continued scrolling down the list, expecting to soon see the two football legends, I was quickly losing faith in the ESPN panel of 150 media members, administrators and former coaches….ok, I already had lost faith. How could they fail to include Trippi and Sinkwich, who in 1942, teamed to comprise one of the most dynamic backfields in history?

Even more surprising, in 2007 ESPN published an account of the Top 25 College Football Players of All Time. The list was headed by Red Grange (Barry Sanders was second, Herschel Walker was third. Jim Brown was 18th) and Charley Trippi came in at 20th. So what happened in the ensuing 12 years that saw Trippi fall off the list. I have seen Trippi and Sinkwich on several other publications’ all-time top greats. They both deserved to be included on the ESPN 150 list.

Frank Sinkwich is the first Georgia Bulldog to win the Heisman, the first Heisman winner to be born outside the United States and the first Heisman winner from a southern school.

He led the “Point-A-Minute” Bullpups freshman team of 1939 to an unbeaten season. As a sophomore in 1940, he made All-Southern first team.

As a junior in 1941, “Flatfoot” Sinkwich set an SEC rushing record with 1,103 yards which stood for eight years, and gained 713 yards passing for a new SEC total offense record of 1,816 yards. He led Georgia to a 40-26 victory over TCU in the Orange Bowl with a performance still considered by many as the best in all bowl history. He gained 139 yards, completed 9 of 13 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns — a total offensive effort of 382 yards. And he accomplished all that despite playing from the third game on with a broken jaw protected by a custom-made facemask. For his efforts, he was an All-America selection and finished fourth in the Heisman voting.

In his record setting senior season with the Bulldogs, Sinkwich gained 795 yards rushing and set the SEC passing record with 1,392 yards, a mark that stood for eight years. He set the SEC total offense record of 2,187 yards that same season. He led Georgia to another SEC record — 4,725 yards of team total offense. Although playing with two sprained ankles, he scored Georgia’s only TD in 9-0 victory over UCLA in the Rose Bowl. He was named a unanimous All-America choice and won the Heisman Trophy. The Associated Press overwhelmingly voted Sinkwich the “Number 1 athlete for 1942” over second-place finisher Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, a year in which Williams hit for baseball’s triple crown.

In his three-year career, Sinkwich rushed for 2,271 yards, passed for 2,331, and accounted for 60 touchdowns—30 rushing and 30 passing. Sinkwich was the No.1 draft choice of the Detroit Lions, where he earned All-Pro honors in 1943–1944, as well as being named as NFL MVP in 1944. Sinkwich was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. His number 21 is one of only four Georgia jerseys retired.

All one needs to know about the career and place in history of  Charles Louis Trippi comes from these impeccable sources. Possibly three of the 20th century’s most knowledgeable college football authorities, Alabama head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Arkansas head coach, athletic director and long-time ABC Sports analyst Frank Broyles, and the legendary voice of college football, ABC play-by-play man Keith Jackson, each is on record of having stated that Charley Trippi was the greatest college football player they had ever seen play. Mighty high praise indeed.

The “Scintillating Sicilian” posed a triple threat on the field. Although primarily a running back, his versatility allowed him to fill a multitude of roles over his career, including quarterback, defensive back, punter, and return specialist. As a sophomore, he played alongside that season’s Heisman Trophy winner Sinkwich and guided Georgia to victory in the 1943 Rose Bowl and was named the game’s most valuable player. Georgia finished the season with a record of 11–1 and was named the consensus national champion.

Despite missing Georgia’s first five games of the 1945 season, Trippi was named a first-team All-Southeastern Conference back.

In 1946, Trippi led Georgia to its first undefeated season and a 20-10 victory over North Carolina in the Sugar Bowl. Against rival Georgia Tech, Trippi compiled 544 combined yards rushing, passing, and returning kicks, and scored three touchdowns in Georgia’s 35–7 victory.

Trippi was awarded the Maxwell Award as the most outstanding college player in the nation, the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy as the nation’s best back, was named the Southeastern Conference’s player of the year and was a unanimous choice for the All-America team. He finished as runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting behind Glenn Davis of Army.

Drafted first overall by the Cardinals in the NFL Draft, Trippi was also pursued by multiple professional baseball teams. He won an NFL Championship in 1947, was a five-time pro bowl selection, was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and was enshrined in Canton in 1965. His No. 62 was retired by Georgia.

When ESPN produces its next milestone list of greatest college football players, hopefully they will heed the advice of “Bear” Bryant and take a good look at the outstanding accomplishments of these two Georgia teammates and legends.

Villanova at Butler college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Wednesday’s Villanova Wildcats at Butler Bulldogs sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Villanova Wildcats (17-4) head into Hinkle Fieldhouse to play the Butler Bulldogs (17-5) Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Villanova-Butler odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Villanova at Butler: Three things you need to know

  1. Each team comes into this game off of a loss; Villanova lost 76-61 at Creighton Saturday, and Butler lost 65-61 at home to Providence.
  2. Villanova has the best record against Big East competition since Butler joined the conference (2013-14) at 111-22 with a 10.5-point margin of victory average. The Wildcats have 33 more intraconference wins than the second-highest winning team in the Big East.
  3. So far this season, Villanova is 2-2 versus ranked opponents, including a 56-55 win over the then No. 1-ranked Kansas Jayhawks while Butler is 0-3 against ranked competition.

Prediction

Villanova 73, Butler 66

Moneyline (ML)

The Big East is Villanova’s world and all the other teams are just living in it. Villanova has won two of the past four national championships, has been ranked first by the Associated Press at some point in three of those seasons, and has won three straight Big East tournaments.

The Wildcats crushed Butler 76-61 in their first meeting Jan. 21 and the Bulldogs could be without starting point guard Aaron Thompson for a fourth straight game. Butler has lost five straight to Villanova and the Bulldogs are just 4-11 against Villanova since entering the Big East. Seven of those losses came by double digits.

Butler has the fourth-highest winning percentage in the Big East since joining but they are just 14-32 against ranked opponents and Villanova is a Big East-best 35-17 with an average margin of victory of 4.8 points against ranked opponents.

BET VILLANOVA (+120) on the money line.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Surprise, surprise, Villanova has the best against the spread record in the Big East at 146-91-2, and the best ATS record against the Big East at 77-56, since Butler joined. The Bulldogs’ ATS record against conference opponents is ranked eighth out of 10 Big East teams in the same timespan. Also, the Wildcats taking a beating in their last game to Creighton will motivate them to get back to form against a familiar punching bag.

It feels like a sucker bet taking a public team like Villanova at such a low number, but whatever, let’s TAKE VILLANOVA +2.5 (-110) as insurance.

Over/Under (O/U)

This is a PASS on the projected total of 130.5 for me. The Under (-106) is 5-0 in the Wildcats last five road games and 4-0 in their last four games as an underdog.  However, the Over (-115) is 6-1 in the Wildcats’ last seven versus teams with a winning record. Plus, Over is 5-0 in the Bulldogs’ last five home games versus teams with a winning road record and Over is 5-0 in their last five games versus a team with a winning percentage above .600.

Oklahoma scrapes by Mississippi State, 63-62

Less than 24 hours after Trae Young dropped 26 points and 16 rebounds against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, he watched his alma mater and some former teammates squeak one out against Mississippi State,  63-62.

With less than 15 seconds left, Oklahoma had to lock down the Bulldogs one last time to preserve their one-point lead and secure their thirteenth win of the season. Yet again, the Sooners defense came through big time with Jamal Bieniemy pressuring up the court and Kristian Doolittle defending Nick Witherspoon’s game-winning attempt just enough to force a miss, giving Oklahoma the win.

However, it was Alondes Williams who stole the show. Williams set a new career-high in points with 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Sparking the Sooners in the second half, Williams scored five points in 19 seconds, capped off with an emphatic fast-break two-handed slam.

“It was amazing,” Williams told reporters through a smile, reminiscing about the dunk that brought the ‘Peake to their feet.

Brady Manek said post-game that the outburst “…was a game-changer,”

The burst of effort from a bench player was exactly what Oklahoma needed to get them through a grinder of a game against an evenly matched Mississippi State team.

However, just as much as the Sooners stopped them, the Bulldogs got in their own way early and often. Easily Mississippi State’s best player and biggest advantage size-wise Reggie Perry picked up three fouls before 10 minutes could tick off the first-half clock. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound center being benched for much of the first half allowed the Sooners to take advantage before the half, building a 15-point lead before taking an 8-point lead into the locker room. Perry did not foul out but was very much missed by the Bulldogs due to a lack of minutes played to keep him from picking up five fouls.

The win gives Oklahoma a 5-2 record in the Big12/SEC Challenge and the school’s fifth straight win in NBA arenas.

Oklahoma gets back to Big 12 Conference play on Wednesday when they head up to Kansas State (8-5, 5-4). The Broadcast can be watched via Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.
