Longhorns Baseball: Texas-sized upset over No 6 Arkansas

The Texas Longhorns pulled off the upset of number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday evening.

After falling to the number 11 ranked Louisiana State Tigers on Friday night, Texas was back at Minute Maid Park to take on an old Southwest Conference foe in the number six ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. Ty Madden took the mound looking to get back on the winning side in the second game of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children College Baseball Classic.

Madden was able to keep the Razorbacks at bay through the first four innings of scoreless baseball. The Longhorns offense went to work after being grounded in the final three innings of their loss to LSU. Zach Zubia started the scoring parade over the early innings with a single that drove in leadoff hitter Austin Todd. Cam Williams drove in the second run on a double play ball that brought Eric Kennedy home.

The offense would explode in the second inning against starter Patrick Wicklander who gave up six runs, four earned in one plus innings pitched. He would be pulled before recording an out in the inning. Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-0 Texas, when Zubia came back to the plate.

The Longhorns finished a six-run second when Cam Williams scored on a throwing error by Arkansas. Madden would go to work with a 8-0 lead, Texas would need ever bit of those eight runs as the number six team in the nation would make a late inning push. Madden pitched six innings throwing 100 pitches. He finished with seven strikeouts, giving up three earned runs. Quality start from the Longhorns number two starter.

Cole Quintanilla lasted just 0.1 innings after giving up two runs allowing Arkansas to get within three runs of Texas after holding a commanding 8-0 lead. Pete Hansen came into the game and shut it down over the next 1.2 to get the game to the ninth. Hansen struck out two batters and allowed just one hit.

It was up to freshman pitcher Andre Duplantier II to close it out in the final inning for Texas to pull off the upset. Duplantier gave up two runs on a Matt Goodheart double that brought the Razorbacks within one, and the tying runner standing at second. The freshman rose to the challenge and got the final outs when Duplantier struck out Casey Opitz and Casey Martin to close the door.

Texas improved to 10-1 on the season. Zubia led all hitters with three RBIs while batting 3-4. The Longhorns look to close out the weekend against another former conference rival in the Missouri Tigers.

Georgia basketball earns much-needed win over Arkansas

Tom Crean’s Georgia Bulldogs came out on top over Arkansas in a contest filled with one-sided scoring streaks.

Needing a win to stay in contention for a first-round bye in the SEC tournament, Tom Crean’s Georgia Bulldogs came out on top over Arkansas in a contest filled with one-sided scoring streaks.

Amidst a season plagued with blown leads and resultant losses, Georgia faithful could never feel comfortable with the Bulldogs’ 18-point lead.

The visiting Hogs twice cut the lead to a single point before the home Dawgs sealed the game.

Projected top NBA Draft pick Anthony Edwards took over the final 1:07 of the game, scoring nine of his 26 points in crunch time. Edwards punctuated the game with a ferocious two-handed dunk that sunk Arkansas.

Fellow NBA prospect Rayshaun Hammonds posted 22 points and nine boards.

Despite a lackluster season for Georgia basketball, the NBA’s projected top pick Anthony Edwards has thrown together a rather modest highlight film in what will almost certainly be his only season in Athens.

With Wyatt Olds and timely hitting, Oklahoma sends loud message with 6-3 win over Arkansas

Oklahoma sends a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas in Shriners College Classic

HOUSTON — With runners on second and third, one out, Arkansas had a stranglehold on all the momentum.

Oklahoma’s Wyatt Olds relieved Cade Cavalli in the sixth inning, allowing a one-out single and double after the Razorbacks hit back-to-back home runs to knock Cavalli out of the game and take a 3-2 lead. He faced Arkansas with a chance for the Razorbacks to open up more than a one-run lead and the fans Woo-Pig-Sooie-ing all the way into the night.

First batter … strikeout.

Second batter … strikeout.

“That was huge,” said head coach Skip Johnson after the game. “It was a momentum changer. You talk about changing momentum and trying to keep it in our dugout—that’s what it was. When he punched those two guys out, it was huge.”

Brady Lindsly would go on to tie the game in the very next frame with a solo shot to left. Then Oklahoma (7-2) would go on to send a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas (7-1) 6-3.

“They were really good in the moment,” Johnson said about his team against Arkansas. “We situational hit really well early in the game. That’s what you have to do against a good team. Get two runs on the board, kind of get your pitch relaxed a little bit and make pitches. Then they took the lead and we fought back, which was really, really special. Got some big hits in some big moments.”

Timely hitting it was as one of Oklahoma’s most struggling hitters delivered one of the biggest blows of the game.

Brandon Zaragoza is off to an extremely rough start to the 2020 season. Zaragoza came into Friday’s game 3-for-29 on the year—that’s good for a .103 batting average.

In the bottom of the seventh, after a throwing error put Trent Brown on second and an infield mishap on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners with no outs, his name was called upon.

Zaragoza, with the same calm, straight-faced demeanor, stepped in.

He got behind 1-2 in the count, then Zaragoza punched a two-strike single through the left side to score Trent Brown and Oklahoma took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

“Well it was huge,” Johnson said. “The thing is he goes out there everyday and fights at it.

“You know what I mean? He works just as hard as everybody else. It’s not what you call a ‘slump’. What it is is a real fight everyday to get the momentum back and get your presence—you are fighting confidence, and he never lost confidence all the way through that deal and that one was big.”

Coming off a weekend where the Sooners went 5-for-42 at the plate with runners in scoring position, Oklahoma started this one going 3-for-10.

Cavalli was dominant through four innings before a 30-pitch, four-hit fifth inning spoiled his day. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing six hits, three runs and struck out 11 of the 21 batters he faced.

Olds got the win, throwing three innings and some change, only allowing four hits, no runs, walked one and struck out six. Jason Ruffcorn moves to 4-for-4 on save attempts on the year after relieving Olds in the ninth.

Tanner Tredaway, Tyler Hardman and Justin Mitchell had two hits each. Tredaway and Mitchell included doubles on their day.

Oklahoma returns to action on Saturday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at 11 a.m. CT against Missouri.

Texas Baseball: Can the Longhorns make a statement?

The Texas Longhorns baseball heads to Houston for the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic. This is an opportunity to compete.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team is 9-0 for the first time since 2009. The team in 2009 was the NCAA runner up and started out 11-0 before dropping their first game. Texas is looking to return to their former glory as one of the premier baseball programs in the state. Their 2020 recruiting class was number one in the country, but now the team has to put it all together to prove they are ready to compete with the best in the nation.

This will be the first big test for Texas when they head to Houston for the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic. The Longhorns will be one of three Big 12 teams participating and one of six teams overall. Their first matchup will be against the LSU Tigers. Texas hosted a three-game set last year at the Disch where the Longhorns swept the number two ranked team in the nation.

Lola Gomez/American-Statesman – USA TODAY Network

Bryce Elder will take the mound on Friday evening for Texas, in last year’s matchup Elder led the Longhorns to an 8-1 victory. He went 6.2 innings only giving up one unearned run on a wild pitch in the first. The Longhorns will need him to provide that same effort so that Texas can get the upset of the 11th ranked team in the country.

The team will follow up the LSU game with the sixth ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. Then wrap up the classic with unranked Missouri. For Texas this weekend will be the measuring stick for success. Any combination of two wins over the next three games will do wonders for this team. Proving to themselves that they can compete with the best in the country will give this team a real boost head of Big 12 play.

Georgia football staff loses another key member

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Arkansas Razorbacks. This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Following the departure of beloved offensive line coach Sam Pittman, now head coach at Arkansas, the Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Razorbacks.

This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Fernando Velasco, who played on the Dawgs’ offensive line from 2003 to 2006 and in the NFL from 2008 to 2016, joined his alama mater’s staff in 2016 as player relations coordinator. He was quickly promoted to director of player development, a position he held for the past three years.

He is the fourth staffer to follow Pittman to Fayetteville, joining special teams coordinator Scott Fountain along with strength and conditioning coaches Jamil Walker and Ed Ellis.

According to his twitter, he will maintain his position of director of player development for the Hogs.

Fernando Velasco is a verified Damn Good Dawg and we wish him the best of luck in the future. That is, until he’s recruiting away from his home.

2020 Notre Dame Opponent Lands Florida QB Transfer

Former Florida quarterback and grad-transfer Feleipe Franks announced Monday he would be transferring to Arkansas for his fifth year.

At first glance the Notre Dame home opener isn’t against a stunning opponent as the Arkansas Razorbacks make their first trip to Notre Dame Stadium.  However, when the two programs meet for the first time in each other’s history the Razorbacks will do so with more intrigue than perhaps previously thought.

Arkansas is coming off an embarrassing 2-10 season in which they fired Chad Morris with just two games remaining.  Barry Lunney, Jr. coached the final two games of 2019 in an interim role before the school announced Georgia’s offensive line coach Sam Pittman to be their head coach in early-December.

Pittman doesn’t appear to be wasting any time upping the talent at Arkansas as he has found his quarterback for 2020.

Former Florida quarterback and grad-transfer Feleipe Franks announced Monday he would be transferring to Arkansas for his fifth year.

Franks started 13 games for Florida in 2018 and helped lead the Gators to a massive turnaround, going 10-3 and winning the Peach Bowl over Michigan.  He threw for 2457 yards that season with 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions while adding seven more scores on the ground.

Franks broke his ankle in Florida’s third game of 2019 and missed the remainder of the season.

Arkansas will be the third SEC opponent to visit Notre Dame Stadium the last four seasons, joining Georgia in ’17 and Vanderbilt in ’18.

It’s official: Arkansas hires Georgia OL coach Sam Pittman, fans react

It’s official: Sam Pittman is going to Arkansas to coach the Razorbacks

Sunday, it was reported that the Arkansas Razorbacks were heavily considering Georgia football offensive line coach Sam Pittman for their open coaching vacancy.

Now, it’s a done deal. Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek officially announced the new signing Sunday evening, with one of Pittman’s signature ‘Yessirr’ videos.

Sadly, the traditional ‘Go Dawgs’ slogan quickly turned to ‘Go Hawgs’ and that was that.

Here’s how the Bulldog Nation reacted to the news:
