Twitter reacts as Timberwolves pick UGA’s Anthony Edwards first

Social media reacted as the Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Georgia Bulldogs star Anthony Edwards number one overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Minnesota Timberwolves drafted Georgia Bulldogs standout basketball player Anthony Edwards number one overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards is the first Georgia basketball prospect to be selected with the top pick.

Edwards is considered one of the top NBA prospects to ever come out of the University of Georgia. In fact, Edwards is the highest selected played in UGA basketball history. NBA legend Dominique Wilkins was the previous record. Wilkins was picked third overall in the 1982 NBA Draft.

Here’s how social media reacted to the selection of Georgia Bulldogs star Anthony Edwards:

It is a memorable day for Anthony Edwards, who honored members of his family:

The Minnesota Timberwolves have selected Georgia Bulldogs shooting guard Anthony Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards is the first University of Georgia player to be picked number one overall in school history.

Anthony Edwards played high school basketball at Holy Spirit Prep School in Atlanta, Georgia. He was rated as one of the top players in the class of 2019 before committing to the University of Georgia.

Edwards played in 32 games in his one season at Georgia. The six-foot-five, 225 pound shooting guard averaged 19.1 points per game. Edwards shows potential as a shooter despite only making 29.4% of his three point attempts for a talent-depleted Bulldog team.

Anthony Edwards is as talented as any player in the 2020 NBA Draft. He possesses impressive athleticism, finishes strong at the basket, has NBA-level shot-making ability, and is quite strong for a 19 year old prospect.

Additionally, Edwards has high defensive potential due to his six-foot-nine wingspan and his athletic traits. Edwards must lock-in on the defensive side of the ball in the NBA in order to fulfill his true potential.

Overall, Anthony Edwards is one of the most talented players in the 2020 NBA Draft and is worthy of the high selection. Now, he must get to work and prove himself at the next level.

Dwyane Wade: Anthony Edwards ‘can be better’ than him

Miami Heat basketball legend Dwyane Wade thinks that former Georgia Bulldog basketball standout Anthony Edwards can be better than him.

NBA and Miami Heat basketball legend Dwyane Wade has strong praise for former Georgia Bulldog basketball standout Anthony Edwards. Dwyane Wade, who is a three-time NBA Champion, believes that Anthony Edwards can be better than him.

Here’s what a quote of what Wade Tweeted regarding the University of Georgia basketball product:

He can be better. America here is your number 1 pick!

Anthony Edwards committed to the Georgia Bulldogs to go a similar journey to that of NBA superstars Victor Oladipo and Dwyane Wade.

Current Georgia basketball coach Tom Crean coached all three players. Crean previously coached Wade for several years when he was at Marquette, where the duo made a Final Four. Additionally, Crean coached Victor Oladipo at Indiana from 2010-2013. Both Oladipo and Wade ended up as top five NBA Draft picks. Crean maintains close relationships with all three players.

Anthony Edwards will look to be Tom Crean’s latest player to be a top five selection. All three players are dynamic shooting guards, who are excellent at getting to the rim. Each of them has explosive athleticism.

Anthony Edwards is arguably the best jump shooter of the group and came in as the most highly touted high school recruit of the three. He has to refine his defensive game in order to truly resemble Dwyane Wade or Victor Oladipo. Edwards does have immense defensive potential due to his rare athleticism and solid build.

Here’s Dwyane Wade’s reaction to Anthony Edwards picking him as his NBA comparison:

Victor Oladipo, a two time NBA All-Star, chimed in via Twitter as well. He’s definitely a believer a Anthony Edwards’ game.

Is Dwyane Wade, Victor Oladipo, or someone else a better NBA comparison for Anthony Edwards?

NBA Draft: Will Georgia’s Anthony Edwards go No. 1 to the Timberwolves?

Last night the Minnesota Timeberwolves received the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Will they take Anthony Edwards?

Thursday night the Minnesota Timberwolves were given the No. 1 pick of the 2020 NBA Draft during the annual NBA Draft Lottery, which is a random drawing of the top draft spots for the league’s upcoming draft.

The draft order is especially important to guys like Georgia basketball’s Anthony Edwards, a potential No. 1 pick.

DawgNation may have wanted to see the Atlanta Hawks in the No. 1 spot, but with Atlanta receiving the No. 6 pick – Edwards will most likely be off the board by the time the Hawks pick, barring a sizable trade.

Many mock drafts have Edwards and LaMelo Ball currently a top their big boards.

Melo took a more untraditional route to the draft than Edwards, electing to play in the AAU circuit in the States before going overseas for the past year to meet the NBA’s one-year out of high school draft requirement.

While Ball played well overseas, Edwards dominated the SEC as a freshman in 2019.

Edwards finished 2019 with 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and was named the 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year – the first Bulldog to win the award.

We will have to wait until the October NBA Draft to see what the Timberwolves do with the No. 1 pick, but it may come down to who Minnesota thinks will be the best fit for their team in the long run.

Ball is a skilled point guard for sure, but with the Timberwolves adding star point guard D’Angelo Russel last season, they may elect to take Edwards at shooting guard, who is a more plug and play prospect with his explosiveness on both ends of the floor.

Watch: Georgia basketball’s Anthony Edwards talks NBA Draft, possibility of playing for Hawks

Anthony Edwards sits down with Bleacher Report to discuss the NBA Draft and how he should be the No. 1 overall pick.

The NBA will be holding its annual Draft Lottery this Thursday, August 20 at 8:30 pm and we will be watching to find out which teams will have a shot at drafting Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards as he tries to become UGA’s first-ever No. 1 NBA draft pick.

Edwards was a one-and-done for the Bulldogs, but his dominant play was something DawgNation will be able to look back on with pride.

He led the Bulldogs in 2019 with 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and was named the 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year – the first Bulldog to win the award.

Here’s Edwards as he sits down with Bleacher Reports Taylor Rooks to talk about the upcoming draft and how he would feel about possibly staying home in Georgia to play for the Hawks.

Watch the interview here.

NBA lottery will impact Anthony Edwards’ career

Georgia Bulldogs standout basketball player Anthony Edwards’ NBA career will be swayed by the NBA’s Draft Lottery.

Georgia Bulldogs standout basketball player Anthony Edwards has a big week coming up. His NBA career and his next basketball home will be partially determined by Thursday’s NBA Draft Lottery.

Edwards is considered one of the top NBA prospects to ever come out of the University of Georgia. He’s projected to be a top five pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cleveland Cavaliers all have a greater than ten percent chance of landing the number one overall pick.

Edwards could land in a variety of different situations. The Atlanta Hawks are Edwards’ hometown team and would be the preferred landing spot for many Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Contrarily, Edwards could end up with the Golden State Warriors, who are anticipated to return to being NBA title contenders next season. He’d have excellent mentors with the Warriors. Golden State will consider trading their top draft pick for a superstar, so that opens up even more possibilities for Edwards.

This NBA Draft doesn’t have a standout superstar like previous years. This combined with the endless possibilities of the NBA Draft Lottery mean that much of Anthony Edwards’ basketball career is hanging in the balance. Being in the right situation makes all the difference for stars in today’s NBA.

The 2020 NBA Draft takes place on Oct. 16.

Georgia forward Rayshaun Hammonds makes final decision on NBA Draft

Georgia F Rayshaun Hammonds had made his final decision on his senior year in Athens.

Georgia basketball’s star forward Rayshaun Hammonds announced his final NBA Draft decision on Saturday, via Twitter.

Hammonds will forgo his senior season to pursue the next chapter of his basketball career in the NBA.

Hammonds, who stands at 6-foot-9, 235 pounds, averaged 12.9 points and 7.4 rebounds a game as a junior last season, showing great improvement from his 6.7 and 4.9 as a freshman.  He shot 35% from three-point-range and 46% from the field.

Hammonds was the second-highest scorer on the team behind likely number one overall lottery draft pick Anthony Edwards. The Dawgs’ head coach Tom Crean, entering his third year with UGA, will have to somehow replace the loss of 32 points and 12.6 rebounds a game that Edwards and Hammonds produced last season.

“Rayshaun let me know the other night of his decision and he is following his heart and dreams,” Crean told the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Saturday.  “We will continue to support him in every possible way as he pursues his future and he will always be apart of the Georgia Basketball family and the University of Georgia community.”

Georgia’s 2019-20 season suddenly ended after a victory over Ole Miss in the first-round of the SEC Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crean will also be losing his seniors Tyree Crump, Jordan Harris and Donnell Gresham as well as the transfer of freshman Rodney Howard to Georgia Tech. The Dawgs will have to recruit well and rebuild around their only returning starters Sahvir Wheeler and Toumani Camara.

Recruiting will only get harder with the NBA G-League announcing its new pathway program for high school players to take, detouring the NCAA.  There has already been a ripple effect seen, with the nation’s top high school player Jalen Green entering the pathway program.

“We are in the midst of restructuring and remodeling,” said Crean on the matter of the Dawgs recruiting process. “It will be ongoing each year with the landscape of college basketball.”

Potential NBA Draft destinations for Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards is considered to be the best prospect in the 2020 NBA Draft. The Warriors, Hawks, Timberwolves, and Cavs all have good odds.

Anthony Edwards declared for the 2020 NBA Draft last month. The Georgia Bulldog standout freshman and potential No. 1 pick averaged 19.1 points per game for the University of Georgia last season.

Before the draft, the NBA lottery will determine the picking order. The teams with the best odds to land the top selection:

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have a 14.0% chance to land the first pick. It would be amazing to watch Edwards play with Stephen Curry and the Warriors, but Golden State is likely to trade the top pick for an All-Star who can contribute immediately. The Warriors’ title window is closing for 32-year-old Steph Curry, 30-year-old Klay Thompson and 30-year-old Draymond Green.

Atlanta Hawks

Will Edwards join former Atlanta Hawk Dominique Wilkins as the next NBA superstar from Georgia? Edwards and Trae Young would form a dynamic backcourt for the Hawks. Atlanta needs defense, but Edwards isn’t a bad fit here. The Hawks have a 12.5% chance to pick first, the fourth-best odds in the NBA.

UGA’s Anthony Edwards declares for NBA Draft

Georgia Bulldogs stud freshman and potential number one overall pick Anthony Edwards has declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Georgia Bulldogs stud freshman and potential number one overall pick Anthony Edwards has declared for the 2020 NBA Draft. Edwards averaged a team-high 19.1 points per game for the University of Georgia during the 2019-2020 season.

Edwards will work on his efficiency in the NBA as he only shot 40% from the field and made under 30% of his three point attempts. That being said, Edwards will have better shot selection in the NBA.

247Sports’ Evan Daniels initially reported the news:

Edwards will be a joy to watch in the NBA. He has the talent and work ethic of an elite player. Can he put it together in the NBA?

The NBA team with the worst record in the NBA: the Golden State Warriors. It’d be something to watch Edwards play for Steph Curry and the Warriors, but Golden State is expected to trade the top overall pick for somebody who can help them win now. The Warriors title window is closing with 32 year-old Steph Curry, 30 year-old Klay Thompson, and 30 year-old Draymond Green.

The NBA regular season may already be over, but there will be a lottery to determine the order of the 2020 NBA Draft. The Atlanta Hawks currently have the fourth best odds at the number one pick. The Hawks come in behind the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors.

He becomes Georgia’s first player ever to win the award since its creation in 2001.
