With Wyatt Olds and timely hitting, Oklahoma sends loud message with 6-3 win over Arkansas

Oklahoma sends a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas in Shriners College Classic

HOUSTON — With runners on second and third, one out, Arkansas had a stranglehold on all the momentum.

Oklahoma’s Wyatt Olds relieved Cade Cavalli in the sixth inning, allowing a one-out single and double after the Razorbacks hit back-to-back home runs to knock Cavalli out of the game and take a 3-2 lead. He faced Arkansas with a chance for the Razorbacks to open up more than a one-run lead and the fans Woo-Pig-Sooie-ing all the way into the night.

First batter … strikeout.

Second batter … strikeout.

“That was huge,” said head coach Skip Johnson after the game. “It was a momentum changer. You talk about changing momentum and trying to keep it in our dugout—that’s what it was. When he punched those two guys out, it was huge.”

Brady Lindsly would go on to tie the game in the very next frame with a solo shot to left. Then Oklahoma (7-2) would go on to send a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas (7-1) 6-3.

“They were really good in the moment,” Johnson said about his team against Arkansas. “We situational hit really well early in the game. That’s what you have to do against a good team. Get two runs on the board, kind of get your pitch relaxed a little bit and make pitches. Then they took the lead and we fought back, which was really, really special. Got some big hits in some big moments.”

Timely hitting it was as one of Oklahoma’s most struggling hitters delivered one of the biggest blows of the game.

Brandon Zaragoza is off to an extremely rough start to the 2020 season. Zaragoza came into Friday’s game 3-for-29 on the year—that’s good for a .103 batting average.

In the bottom of the seventh, after a throwing error put Trent Brown on second and an infield mishap on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners with no outs, his name was called upon.

Zaragoza, with the same calm, straight-faced demeanor, stepped in.

He got behind 1-2 in the count, then Zaragoza punched a two-strike single through the left side to score Trent Brown and Oklahoma took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

“Well it was huge,” Johnson said. “The thing is he goes out there everyday and fights at it.

“You know what I mean? He works just as hard as everybody else. It’s not what you call a ‘slump’. What it is is a real fight everyday to get the momentum back and get your presence—you are fighting confidence, and he never lost confidence all the way through that deal and that one was big.”

Coming off a weekend where the Sooners went 5-for-42 at the plate with runners in scoring position, Oklahoma started this one going 3-for-10.

Cavalli was dominant through four innings before a 30-pitch, four-hit fifth inning spoiled his day. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing six hits, three runs and struck out 11 of the 21 batters he faced.

Olds got the win, throwing three innings and some change, only allowing four hits, no runs, walked one and struck out six. Jason Ruffcorn moves to 4-for-4 on save attempts on the year after relieving Olds in the ninth.

Tanner Tredaway, Tyler Hardman and Justin Mitchell had two hits each. Tredaway and Mitchell included doubles on their day.

Oklahoma returns to action on Saturday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at 11 a.m. CT against Missouri.

Oklahoma’s pitching staff has lived up to the hype through the first nine games, posting a staff 2.51 ERA, striking out 100 batters in 79 innings and holding hitters to a .193 batting average. Led by Tanner Tredaway’s .405 batting average and .811 slugging percentage, Johnson’s lineup has boasted five hitters hitting over .330 that have played in at least five games and has already stolen more than half (15) of the 29 bases they stole a year ago.

Texas Baseball: Can the Longhorns make a statement?

The Texas Longhorns baseball heads to Houston for the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic. This is an opportunity to compete.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team is 9-0 for the first time since 2009. The team in 2009 was the NCAA runner up and started out 11-0 before dropping their first game. Texas is looking to return to their former glory as one of the premier baseball programs in the state. Their 2020 recruiting class was number one in the country, but now the team has to put it all together to prove they are ready to compete with the best in the nation.

This will be the first big test for Texas when they head to Houston for the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic. The Longhorns will be one of three Big 12 teams participating and one of six teams overall. Their first matchup will be against the LSU Tigers. Texas hosted a three-game set last year at the Disch where the Longhorns swept the number two ranked team in the nation.

Lola Gomez/American-Statesman – USA TODAY Network

Bryce Elder will take the mound on Friday evening for Texas, in last year’s matchup Elder led the Longhorns to an 8-1 victory. He went 6.2 innings only giving up one unearned run on a wild pitch in the first. The Longhorns will need him to provide that same effort so that Texas can get the upset of the 11th ranked team in the country.

The team will follow up the LSU game with the sixth ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday. Then wrap up the classic with unranked Missouri. For Texas this weekend will be the measuring stick for success. Any combination of two wins over the next three games will do wonders for this team. Proving to themselves that they can compete with the best in the country will give this team a real boost head of Big 12 play.

Georgia football staff loses another key member

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Arkansas Razorbacks. This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Following the departure of beloved offensive line coach Sam Pittman, now head coach at Arkansas, the Georgia Bulldogs have lost another staff member to the Razorbacks.

This time, it’s one of Georgia’s own.

Fernando Velasco, who played on the Dawgs’ offensive line from 2003 to 2006 and in the NFL from 2008 to 2016, joined his alama mater’s staff in 2016 as player relations coordinator. He was quickly promoted to director of player development, a position he held for the past three years.

He is the fourth staffer to follow Pittman to Fayetteville, joining special teams coordinator Scott Fountain along with strength and conditioning coaches Jamil Walker and Ed Ellis.

According to his twitter, he will maintain his position of director of player development for the Hogs.

Fernando Velasco is a verified Damn Good Dawg and we wish him the best of luck in the future. That is, until he’s recruiting away from his home.

2020 Notre Dame Opponent Lands Florida QB Transfer

Former Florida quarterback and grad-transfer Feleipe Franks announced Monday he would be transferring to Arkansas for his fifth year.

At first glance the Notre Dame home opener isn’t against a stunning opponent as the Arkansas Razorbacks make their first trip to Notre Dame Stadium.  However, when the two programs meet for the first time in each other’s history the Razorbacks will do so with more intrigue than perhaps previously thought.

Arkansas is coming off an embarrassing 2-10 season in which they fired Chad Morris with just two games remaining.  Barry Lunney, Jr. coached the final two games of 2019 in an interim role before the school announced Georgia’s offensive line coach Sam Pittman to be their head coach in early-December.

Pittman doesn’t appear to be wasting any time upping the talent at Arkansas as he has found his quarterback for 2020.

Former Florida quarterback and grad-transfer Feleipe Franks announced Monday he would be transferring to Arkansas for his fifth year.

Franks started 13 games for Florida in 2018 and helped lead the Gators to a massive turnaround, going 10-3 and winning the Peach Bowl over Michigan.  He threw for 2457 yards that season with 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions while adding seven more scores on the ground.

Franks broke his ankle in Florida’s third game of 2019 and missed the remainder of the season.

Arkansas will be the third SEC opponent to visit Notre Dame Stadium the last four seasons, joining Georgia in ’17 and Vanderbilt in ’18.

It’s official: Arkansas hires Georgia OL coach Sam Pittman, fans react

It’s official: Sam Pittman is going to Arkansas to coach the Razorbacks

Sunday, it was reported that the Arkansas Razorbacks were heavily considering Georgia football offensive line coach Sam Pittman for their open coaching vacancy.

Now, it’s a done deal. Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek officially announced the new signing Sunday evening, with one of Pittman’s signature ‘Yessirr’ videos.

Sadly, the traditional ‘Go Dawgs’ slogan quickly turned to ‘Go Hawgs’ and that was that.

Here’s how the Bulldog Nation reacted to the news:

Arkansas Razorbacks football team is dealing with a serious mumps outbreak

More than a dozen Arkansas players are out on Friday because of a mumps outbreak.

The Arkansas Razorbacks season seemed like it couldn’t get much worse, with just two wins on the year and several blowout losses to SEC powerhouses, but the team was forced to play its final game of the year without a significant portion of its roster on Friday due to a mumps outbreak on campus.

According to a report last Sunday, a total of nine cases of the mumps were reported at the University of Arkansas. According to Arkansas beat reporter Trey Schaap, Razorbacks secondary coach Mark Smith was diagnosed with the mumps, and John Nabors reports that “around 15 players” would be held out of the game.

A mumps outbreak in Arkansas in 2016 resulted in more than 3,000 cases of the disease.

Via Arkansas.gov:

“Mumps is a viral illness that is transmitted by direct contact with respiratory droplets or saliva from an infected person. It is best known for painful, swollen salivary glands that show up as puffy cheeks and swollen jaw. Boys may also have painful, swollen testicles. Other symptoms include fever, headache, muscles aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. There is no treatment, and symptoms usually resolve themselves within a few weeks. Mumps is usually a mild disease in children, but adults may have more serious disease with complications. Vaccination against Mumps is available with MMR vaccine.”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Dave Matter tweeted that some media members covering the game were contacting their parents to find out if they had received the MMR vaccine.

Missouri at Arkansas odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Missouri Tigers at Arkansas Razorbacks sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Missouri Tigers (5-6, 2-5 SEC) and Arkansas Razorbacks (2-9, 0-7 SEC) play Friday at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, AR at 2:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Missouri-Arkansas odds and betting lines while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Missouri at Arkansas: Three things you need to know

1. Arkansas played about 15-20 minutes of sound, fundamental football last Saturday against LSU. Then the wheels fell off. A 7-6 game became a 56-20 rout as LSU coasted to a 36-point win. That was Arkansas’ eighth straight loss.

2. Missouri lost to Tennessee 24-20 last week to drop its fifth straight contest in a row. Plus, the Tigers’ bowl ban was upheld this week so they have little to play for but pride.

3. Arkansas may be down to QB Jack Lindsey as a starter. That would be their fifth-string quarterback who was given a scholarship just in August. Missouri hasthe banged-up Kelly Bryant under center.

Prediction

Missouri 38, Arkansas 20

Moneyline (ML)

Missouri is laying -556 on the moneyline and Arkansas is +400 in this rivalry game.

Arkansas must run often to keep Missouri off the field. RB Rakeem Boyd has gained 1,038 yards and behind one of the worst offensive lines in the SEC. That being said, Missouri has too much firepower not to win with ease. Arkansas allows 6.9 yards per carry (125th in the FBS). The odds are just too chalky with a $10 bet garnering a profit of $1.80. PASS.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Arkansas is 3-8 against the spread overall and just 1-5 ATS at home, coming in just under 18 points per game below the line. Missouri is 0-4 ATS on the road and has an even worse -22.2 points off the projection line. However, Arkansas is likely down to its fifth-string quarterback Friday.

Back the TIGERS (-12.5, -115). Missouri QB Kelly Bryant has a chance to get well and end his senior season on a good note.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected total is 54.5. This will be close but it is hard not to side with the OVER (-106). Arkansas has shown it can keep up with teams but cannot stop them once they string some plays together. Missouri should be able to do that enough to make this Over a reality.

The Arkansas Razorbacks (2-8) travel to Baton Rouge to play the top-ranked LSU Tigers (10-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Tiger Stadium.

Arkansas at LSU: Three things you need to know

  • Arkansas has lost seven of its last 10 meetings with LSU but has a record of 7-3 against the spread in those games.
  • LSU has beaten Arkansas by more than 32 points just once and that was in 1908.
  • Arkansas has allowed 198 points in its last four losses, losing 51-10 to Auburn, 48-7 to Alabama, 54-24 to Mississippi State and 45-19 to Western Kentucky.

Prediction

LSU 56, Arkansas 7

Moneyline (?)

There was no moneyline at the time of publishing due to the sizeable spread. Any bet on a simple outright victory for LSU wouldn’t return a worthwhile profit.

Against the Spread (?)

It’s rare when conference rivals find themselves with this massive of a point spread (43.5).

With Arkansas having lost by 41 points to both Auburn and Alabama, it makes sense to have a number like this. LSU has a grip on the No. 1 spot in the playoff rankings, but with Ohio State and Clemson on their heels, they will need to have a resounding win to hold the top spot. Lay the points with the TIGERS (-43.5, -110).

New to sports betting? A wager on LSU to win by 44 or more points would return a profit of $9.09.

Over/Under (?)

This one is a little more difficult because the question becomes how willing are the Tigers going to be to keep their starters in the game and run up the score? The projected total is 69.5 (O: +100, U: -120).

Considering the second-team defense for LSU can shut down the Razorbacks and we project them to score only seven points, LSU will have to score nine touchdowns to hit the over. They’re capable of it, but not likely to hit it if they pull their starters. Take the UNDER (-120).
