Report: Giants have actively monitored CB trade market

The New York Giants, who are 1-4 and going downhill, are reportedly monitoring the cornerback market ahead of the NFL trading deadline.

The New York Giants are currently 1-4, injured ravaged and headed into a remarkably difficult stretch where they could come out the other side as bad as 1-8.

Despite their early-season struggles and the lack of optimism surrounding the team, they are apparently still looking to improve. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Giants are among the teams that have actively monitored the cornerback trade market.

Several teams have actively monitored the cornerback market in recent months, including the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, Houston Texans and New York Giants. The position has only grown in importance because of injuries across the league.

With things rapidly going downhill, it would make more sense for the Giants to put players on the trade market as opposed to trying to take some off.

New York recently lost rookie cornerback Rodarius Williams for the season with a torn ACL, while the remainder of the group has drastically underperformed. James Bradberry looks like a shell of his 2020 self, Darnay Holmes has seen a reduced role and high-priced free agent addition, Adoree’ Jackson, has been inconsistent at best.

However, to be fair, part of the struggles in the secondary stem from a complete lack of pass rush up front. Quarterbacks and receivers are being given a ton of time to run freely and find open spots on the field. It’s almost impossible for the corners to defend.

Still, the cash-strapped Giants should not be looking to add anyone at any position. Rather, they should be seeking to unload large contracts and expiring contracts in an effort to beef up their draft capital.

Daniel Jones, Andrew Thomas were highest-graded Giants in Week 4

QB Daniel Jones and LT Andrew Thomas were the highest graded New York Giants in a Week 4 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

The New York Giants picked up their first victory of the 2021 season on Sunday, coming back from a fourth quarter deficit before winning in overtime.

The comeback was led by quarterback Daniel Jones, who, unsurprisingly, was the highest-graded Giant on the day, earning an 84.6 from Pro Football Focus.

Right behind Jones was the team’s second-highest graded player, left tackle Andrew Thomas, who earned a 79.9. He was followed by wide receiver Kenny Golladay (77.7).

Other notable offensive grades include wide receiver John Ross (76.4), running back Saquon Barkley (65.8), left guard Matt Skura (61.0) and right tackle Nate Solder (55.0).

On the defensive side of the ball, lineman Leonard Williams led the way with a 74.2.

Just behind Williams were defensive linemen Dexter Lawrence (71.3) and Austin Johnson (61.6), and cornerback James Bradberry (61.2). That’s with a 40-snap minimum.

Other notable defensive grades include rookie edge rusher Azeez Ojulari (55.2), cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (53.8) and safety Logan Ryan (44.5).

Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley lead Giants to thrilling OT victory over Saints

Daniel Jones threw for 402 yards and Saquon Barkley scored two touchdowns as the New York Giants upset the Saints, 27-21, in Week 4.

The New York Giants traveled down to Louisiana for a Week 4 battle with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday and things went about as expected.

At least initially, that is.

Big Blue started strong but began to fade as similar issues arose: missed tackles, blown assignments, poor clock management and issues in the red zone (on both sides of the ball).

But just as things started to look ugly late, quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley stepped up and rallied the team.

After a Graham Gano field goal sent the game into overtime, Jones, Barkley and Kenny Golladay combined to ensure New Orleans wouldn’t sniff the field again.

With the win, the Giants improve to 1-3 on the season and remain very much alive.

Azeez Ojulari, Collin Johnson were highest-graded Giants in Week 3

Rookie edge rusher Azeez Ojulari and wide receiver Collin Johnson were the highest-graded New York Giants in a Week 3 loss to Atlanta.

The New York Giants fell to the Atlanta Falcons, 17-14, in Week 3. That dropped their record to 0-3 on the season and may have started a chain reaction that results in significant change.

Much of what came out of Sunday’s game was negative, but not everything. There were a few small bright spots.

Among them was rookie edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, who picked up his third sack of the season. He also led the team with a 92.2 grade from Pro Football Focus.

Behind Ojulari on the defensive side of the ball were defensive lineman Leonard Williams (83.1), linebacker Tae Crowder (72.2) and defensive back Julian Love (72.0). That’s with a 20-snap minimum.

Other notable defensive grades include cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (71.9), safety Jabrill Peppers (62.1) and linebacker Reggie Ragland (55.6).

The lowest-graded Giants defender was cornerback Rodarius Williams (31.9), but he had just 17 snaps. Safety Logan Ryan, who had 62 snaps, scored the next lowest grade (40.9).

On the offensive side of the ball, wide receiver Collin Johnson shined in place of Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton. He graded out with an 83.2.

Behind Johnson were left tackle Andrew Thomas (82.3), center Billy Price (76.2) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (75.7).

Other notable grades on offense include quarterback Daniel Jones (71.9), running back Saquon Barkley (63.4) and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (54.5).

The lowest-grade Giant on offense will come as little surprise. Guard Ben Bredeson graded out at 31.7 (including pass protection grade of 25.7).

Giants lose to Falcons: Instant analysis

Analyzing the New York Giants’ embarrassing loss against the Atlanta Falcons on on Sunday afternoon in Week 3.

On a perfect day for football in Northern New Jersey, the 0-2 New York Giants hosted the 0-2 Atlanta Falcons in a matchup between two teams not expected to make much noise in the NFC this year.

They didn’t make much noise in this game, either. Atlanta came into the game allowing the most points in the league (80) over the first two weeks and many expected the Giants to take advantage of that. Quarterback Daniel Jones was operating with this full complement of weapons for the first time in his Giants career.

But that wouldn’t last very long.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton left the game in the first quarter with a hamstring issue and was ruled out. Sterling Shepard hobbled off the field in the second quarter with a hamstring strain and was also ruled out. Running back Saquon Barkley went off for treatment on the Giants’ third possession but returned.

The Giants’ defense opened the game by forcing punts on the Falcons’ first three possessions but could only muster a pair of field goals on two long drives. The Giants were plagued by injuries and penalties in the first half and fell behind 7-6 with 1:33 left in the second quarter when Matt Ryan hit Olamide Zaccheaus for a four-yard touchdown. The scoring drive was aided several plays before when Giants safety Xavier McKinney was flagged with a questionable personal foul penalty that gave the Falcons the football on the New York seven.

On the Giants’ next possession, tight end Evan Engram, making his season debut, caught a pass in the seam on a second-and-10 for 14 yards but fumbled the football away. Atlanta took possession on the Giants’ 36 but the defense got the football back when rookie Azeez Ojulari stripped Ryan on a third and nine. The ball was recovered by Lorenzo Carter preventing any further damage as the half ran out with Atlanta leading, 7-6.

In the second half, the Giants opened with a seven-play, 29-yard drive that led to another punt. The defenses continued to rule as both teams went scoreless in the third quarter. But the Giants put an end to the frustration early in the fourth quarter when Barkley scored on a one-yard dive at the 12:33 mark. Jones followed that by running in the two-point conversion for a 14-7 Giants lead.

Atlanta came right back and tied the game on a one-yard Ryan-to-Lee Smith touchdown connection to end a 15-play drive that was buoyed by an Adoree’ Jackson dropped interception in the end zone and a Logan Ryan pass interference penalty.

The Giants took possession with 4:13 remaining but a holding penalty on second down put Jones in a 3rd-and-19 situation that led to another Giants punt with 1:58 left on the clock.

Ryan, starting from his now 20, drove the Falcons down the field quickly and efficiently down to the Giants’ Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo, who had never kicked a game-winning field goal in the fourth quarter or in overtime, belted a 40-yard attempt right through the middle of the uprights with :03 left on the clock for the Atlanta victory.

The Giants are 0-3 for the third time in five seasons.

Notes

  • Inside linebacker and defensive captain Blake Martinez was helped off the field on the Falcons’ opening drive with a non-contact knee injury and did not return. He was replaced by Reggie Ragland. Tae Crowder took over calling the defensive signals.
  • Collin Johnson was the next man up at wide receiver after the injuries to Slayton and Shepard and had a solid day catching five passes for 51 yards.
  • Daniel Jones did not throw a touchdown but did complete 24 of 35 passes for 266 yards and rushed for 39 more.
  • Saquon Barkley scored his first touchdown since Week 17 of the 2019 season. He rushed for 51 yards and caught six passes for 43 yards.
  • Former quarterback Eli Manning had his No. 10 retired at halftime and was also enshrined in the Giants’ Ring of Honor. It was one of the few times the crowd cheered.
  • The Giants outgained the Falcons 346-296 and won the time of possession, 31:51 to 28:09.
  • The Giants went 7-14 on third down but just 1-3 in the red zone. They 3-9 on the season in the red zone.

The New York Giants fell in heartbreaking fashion to the Washington Football Team on Thursday night, dropping their record to 0-2 on the season.

As the losing continues, frustration across the organization is beginning to grow. Players are griping with each other and the coaches, fans are calling for heads and somewhere, John Mara is probably throwing chairs.

But there were a few bright spots in Week 2. Namely quarterback Daniel Jones, who earned a team-high grade of 91.3 on Thursday night courtesy of Pro Football Focus.

Just behind Jones on the offensive side of the ball were tight end Kaden Smith (87.9), fullback Eli Penny (70.9) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (68.6).

Other notable grades on offense include running back Saquon Barkley (63.3), wide receiver Darius Slayton (61.0) and right tackle Nate Solder (49.7).

The lowest-graded player on offense was center Billy Price, who checked out at 28.1, including a pass protection grade of 8.7 (no, that’s not a typo).

On the defensive side of the ball, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson led the way with an 84.3. He was followed by safety Xavier McKinney (75.5), cornerback James Bradberry (74.3) and safety Jabrill Peppers (69.8).

Other noteworthy defensive grades include linebacker Azeez Ojulari (51.6), safety Logan Ryan (51.0) and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (45.0).

The lowest-graded Giants defender was defensive end Raymond Johnson (29.7).

Giants fall to Washington: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 2 loss to the Washington Football Team.

The New York Giants were given every imaginable opportunity to win on Thursday night at FedEx Field, but they wanted no part of it.

Injuries, dropped passes, missed tackles, penalties, blown assignments… You name it and the Giants pulled it out of a hat.

In the end, New York fell to 0-2 with the 30-29 loss to Washington.

Here’s a look at the winners, losers and those in between from Week 2.

Giants fall to Broncos: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos.

The New York Giants played host to the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon in front of the first packed house since 2019.

However, just as it was in 2019 and again last season without fans, there wasn’t much to cheer for. There was, however, a lot to boo over. And boo the fans did.

Teddy Bridgewater and the Broncos dominated the Giants from the open whistle until the final whistle. The 27-13 score doesn’t actually represent just how one-sided the game actually was.

Let’s take a look at the winners and losers (and those in between) from the latest and all too familiar Giants loss.
