Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 19 days

We are now just 19 days away from the start of Alabama football’s 2023 season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 19 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

With 19 days remaining, we will take a look at one of the most consistent defenders of the Coach Saban era, [autotag]Reggie Ragland[/autotag].

Ragland played in Tuscaloosa from 2012-15 and during his final two seasons was a tackling machine. In his Tide career, Ragland totaled 220 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks.

Linebacker [autotag]Keanu Koht[/autotag] and wide receiver [autotag]Kendrick Law[/autotag] currently wear No. 19 for the Crimson Tide.

Howie Roseman says Eagles will keep their options open at linebacker position

During his presser to open up the first practice for Philadelphia’s 2023 training camp, GM Howie Roseman says Eagles“will keep their options open” at the linebacke rposition

The Eagles are always doing their due diligence on potential roster additions, and we’re wondering if any of the top remaining NFL free agents would fit in Philadelphia.

The Birds are stacked at almost every position outside of the linebacker position.

Philadelphia has Nakobe Dean and Nicholas Morrow but could look to add more depth with just Christian Ellis, Shaun Bradley, and Davion Taylor as reserves.

During his Wednesday press conference with head coach Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia’s GM said he’d address the linebacker position if necessary.

With Day 2 of the Eagles’ training camp scheduled for Thursday, we’re looking at a handful of free-agent linebackers that could fit the scheme.

10 Browns free agents remain unsigned heading into OTAs

10 members of the 2022 Browns have yet to find a new home in free agency.

The Cleveland Browns dramatically overhauled their defense this offseason. From the hiring of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to the signing of defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson to the trade for Za’Darius Smith, the Browns addressed a bleeding issue from a year ago. This means, however, that means players from the 2022 roster have parted ways as well, including the likes of running back Jadeveon Clowney and running back Kareem Hunt.

With OTAs underway as well, both Hunt and Clowney have yet to find a new home in free agency. They are not the only two, however, as there are a total of 10 players from Cleveland’s 2022 roster that remain unsigned as the offseason progresses.

Browns Injury Alert: LB Reggie Ragland ruled out for rest of matchup vs. Steelers

The Browns are without another linebacker.

After losing both running back Kareem Hunt and cornerback Denzel Ward for the remainder of this matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, linebacker Reggie Ragland has also been ruled out for the Cleveland Browns. This comes after the Browns have already placed a massive five linebackers on Injured Reserve this season as well.

Look for Tony Fields II, Jermaine Carter Jr., and Deion Jones to stand post at linebacker the rest of the way out for the Browns in this game. Good thing the season ends today for the Browns because they do not have anybody else to field at the second level of their defense.

Upon Further Review: What stood out from the all-22 vs. Commanders?

What stood out from the all-22 as the Browns defeated the Commanders on Sunday?

It is always more fun to write about these all-22 breakdowns after the Cleveland Browns come away with a win. And they did just that in a 24-10 victory over the Washington Commanders that featured a second half beatdown on both sides of the football for the Browns.

Much of the finer details of the game do not show up on the broadcast. What coverage defenses are in, what schemes the offenses are running, and more are not evident until the all-22 comes out. After peeking at the all-22, here are a few things that stood out from a second watch of this game.

Reggie Ragland: Some Commanders ‘would’ve preferred’ Taylor Heinicke

Reggie Ragland stirred the pot a bit in D.C.

The Washington Commanders opted to bench Taylor Heinicke in favor of Carson Wentz against the Cleveland Browns. It ended in a three-interception performance from Wentz and a Cleveland win as the Commanders were officially eliminated from playoff contention (much to Ron Rivera’s surprise). Cleveland linebacker Reggie Ragland, however, may have ruffled some feathers in D.C. with his postgame comments.

After the game, Ragland came out and stated that he knew some players in Washington’s locker room that would have preferred for Rivera to stick with Heinicke over Wentz. Ragland was college teammates with both Washington defensive tackles Jon Allen and Browns’ free agent target Daron Payne, and wide receiver Cam Sims. He also spent time in Kansas City with cornerback Kendall Fuller.

Regardless, Ragland knew the Browns could take advantage of Wentz’s long release, and take advantage they did.

Browns linebacker says some Commanders’ players would have preferred Heinicke over Wentz

Reggie Ragland said “some” of Washington’s players would’ve preferred Heinicke to play.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Reggie Ragland starred at the University of Alabama before arriving in the NFL as a second-round pick in 2016. Ragland has moved around a bit and, last month, signed with Cleveland after spending a month on the Raiders’ practice squad.

Ragland played in Sunday’s 24-10 victory over the Washington Commanders, finishing with two tackles.

However, his comments after the game were much more interesting than anything he did on the field Sunday.

In preparation for the Commanders last week, Cleveland defensive coaches watched a lot of film, obviously seeing plenty of both Washington quarterbacks, Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke.

After the game, Ragland spoke with the media via Tramel Raggs of The Washington Post and noted Wentz’s long, slow release as something that allowed defenders to “get a good break on it and make something shake.”

Ragland also noted how each quarterback is different and, as a result, the offense is different with each quarterback.

But it was his comments about what some Washington players preferred that were most interesting.

“Like some of the guys I know on the team, they would’ve preferred Heinicke because they know he gets the ball out,” Ragland said.

Ok, let’s refer back to Ragland’s time at Alabama. As you know, the Commanders have some prominent players from Alabama, including Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, Allen, Payne and wide receiver Cam Sims all played with him at Alabama. Ragland also spent some time with Washington cornerback Kendall Fuller in Kansas City.

Those are certainly interesting comments and would mean that Rivera didn’t have the pulse of his entire team if true. Now, of course, it doesn’t mean the aforementioned players are the ones who spoke to Ragland, but he did mention “some of the guys,” meaning more than one would’ve preferred Heinicke.

Wentz would go on to pass for only 143 yards and throw three interceptions in an abysmal performance that cost Washington any chance at the playoffs.

Browns ‘expect two more weeks’ of solid play out of LB Reggie Ragland

The Browns have been impressed by Reggie Ragland

Signed off of the practice squad of the Las Vegas Raiders after the season-ending injury to starting linebacker Sione Takitaki, Reggie Ragland is now seeing significant snaps for the Cleveland Browns. As the Browns have now lost a fifth linebacker in Jordan Kunaszyk, Ragland may be thrust into an even bigger role. And his position coach Jason Tarver thinks he is up to the challenge.

Tarver had this to say about Ragland during his weeks of interaction with the linebacker:

“To his credit, he has an infectious personality. He knows when to focus. He knows when to keep things light… His focus level, his personality and he likes contact, which of course is very important playing linebacker. He uses his hands, and he can really diagnose the box the run game. Played very solid last week, and we expect two more weeks one at a time of that.”

He was the highest-graded Brown according to PFF a week ago, and they will need him to keep that up as they continue to shovel in a variation of linebackers into their starting lineup.

Browns announce 7 inactives as Amari Cooper is set to play vs. Bengals

The Browns have released their inactives, but the biggest news surrounds Amari Cooper.

The Cleveland Browns have released their inactives list for their matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals as seven players appear. The biggest news, however, surrounds a player not on the list as wide receiver Amari Cooper will fight through a hip injury to put his best foot forward for the Browns today.

While he was listed as questionable coming into this AFC North matchup, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said he would give it a go today. Cooper then went out to test the hip pregame, deciding he was good enough to play today against the Bengals.

Who were the seven inactives, however? We take a look here.

Former Alabama LB Reggie Ragland signed to Cleveland Browns’ active roster

Former Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland was with the Raiders’ practice squad but was signed to the Browns’ active roster on Wednesday.

Former Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland was signed to the Cleveland Browns active roster on Wednesday. He was last a part of the Las Vegas Raiders‘ practice squad.

Ragland entered the NFL after spending four years in Tuscaloosa. He was drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Bills. However, he has bounced around the league over the years. The native of Madison, Alabama has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, and New York Giants.

It has been a rough go for the former Alabama captain. However, it will be interesting to see if he can make an impact on the Browns’ defense. He will now be a teammate of former Tide alumnus Amari Cooper, Jedrick Wills, and Ronnie Harrison III.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Ragland’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.
