Dolphins to release CB Keion Crossen

The Dolphins are releasing a special teamer who missed all of 2023.

The Miami Dolphins still have a long way to go to become cap-compliant by the start of the new league year.

On Tuesday, the team made a move to get closer to that goal, as the Dolphins are releasing cornerback Keion Crossen, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.

Crossen, 27, was originally a seventh-round pick of the New England Patriots back in 2018 and signed with Miami in 2022 following stints with the Houston Texans (2019-20) and New York Giants (2021).

He missed the entirety of the 2023 season due to an injury in training camp that caused him to have multiple surgeries throughout the year.

Releasing the special teams ace and depth cornerback saves the Dolphins $2.99 million, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him re-signed if and when he’s fully healthy.

4 Dolphins who could be cap casualties this offseason

A few Dolphins who could be released due to their contracts.

The Miami Dolphins are currently projected to be $51.9 million over the projected salary cap in 2024, according to Over the Cap.

With that knowledge, it’s not hard to imagine that this year’s roster might look very different than the Dolphins that take the field in September.

While Miami may try and re-work some contracts or make some trades, there’s a strong chance that some players get released to create some room this offseason.

Let’s look at some of the Dolphins’ candidates to be cap casualties in 2024.

35 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 35 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 35 jersey number

The countdown to the New England Patriots’ regular season opener continues with the team officially being 35 days away from their Sept. 10 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So today, we’re continuing our countdown series by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 35 jersey.

Second-year running back Pierre Strong Jr. is the current owner of the jersey. The former fourth-round draft pick has been relatively unknown up to this point, but he could see an uptick in action in 2023 with the Patriots lacking in running back depth.

Strong’s jersey number carries a long history with Patriots standouts, such as Kyle Dugger, James Develin and Jim Nance wearing it. Former Patriots running back Jonas Gray is also a name that sticks given how quickly he flashed and fizzled out in New England. Who could ever forget him rushing for 201 yards and four touchdowns against the Colts in 2014?

Let’s take a look at every player throughout franchise history that has ever worn the number (via Pro Football Reference).

Grading the Miami Dolphins cornerbacks after their 2022 season

The room was decimated by injuries.

The Miami Dolphins have begun their offseason processes of evaluating their roster and coaching staff, as they look to achieve more in the 2023 season than they did in 2022.

While they’re doing their own assessments, it’s important for us to do the same.

We’ll continue to look through the Dolphins roster and break down the position groups, reviewing how they performed in their first season under head coach Mike McDaniel.

We’ve already hit on the:

Today, we’ll look at the cornerbacks.

Dolphins CB Keion Crossen played entire season with torn labrum

Miami dealt with so many injuries in the secondary.

For the Miami Dolphins, injuries were a common theme of their 2022 season with a number of key contributors missing time.

That was especially the case in the secondary, as Byron Jones missed the whole year following Achilles surgery, Nik Needham tore his Achilles and both Brandon Jones and Trill Williams suffered torn ACLs.

Miami was forced to rely on depth players like Keion Crossen to fill the void. However, after their elimination from the postseason, Crossen posted on social media that he had surgery to fix a torn labrum that he played with for the entire season.

The core special teamer stepped in and really contributed in his first year in Miami, even working through a painful injury to make sure his team wouldn’t be down another member of their secondary.

2023 NFL draft: Giants projected to receive 2 compensatory picks

The New York Giants are projected to receive two compensatory picks in the 2023 NFL draft, bringing their total number of picks to 11.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the amount of draft picks the New York Giants will have in the upcoming NFL draft.

Many draft prognostication sites around the internet are listing the Giants with 10 or 11 selections but according to general manager Joe Schoen, who spoke to the media on Monday, the team currently has nine.

The Giants could — repeat, could — be awarded a compensatory pick or two next month by the league.

Per Over the Cap’s Cancellation Chart, Big Blue is currently in line for two compensatory picks — one in Round 6 and one in Round 7. That would give them 11 selections in total.

Over The Cap is projecting the Giants will be awarded a sixth-round pick for losing linebacker Lorenzo Carter to Atlanta in free agency and another for losing defensive back Keion Crossen to Miami.

That is not official, however. That is an estimate provided by a third-party prognosticator who is not affiliated with the NFL. To be fair, though, OTC has been a reliable source in the past.

So, how many picks do the Giants have right now? Nine, as Schoen said.

They hold the 25th overall pick in Round 1 and then have their own selections in Rounds 2, 3, 4, and 5.

They have an additional selection in Round 3 from Kansas City as a result of the Kadarius Toney trade. It is not the Chiefs’ regular pick, however. It is a compensatory pick at the end of the round the Chiefs were awarded when the Chicago Bears hired Ryan Poles — Kansas City’s director of player personnel — away to be their general manager.

The Giants do not have their sixth-round pick in this draft. They traded that to Houston in August of 2021 for Crossen. That, ironically, can turn into that seventh-rounder OTC is projecting.

The Giants do, however, have Kansas City’s sixth-round pick as completion of the Toney trade.

In Round 7, the Giants have two selections, their own and the one they got from Baltimore in the Ben Bredeson trade in the summer of 2021.

So, the Giants have one pick in each of the first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds and two in each of the third and seventh rounds.

Dolphins CB calls out portion of fan base in defense of Tua Tagovailoa

In his mind, fans should support whoever’s under center.

While the Miami Dolphins are 8-5 through the first 14 weeks of the 2022 season and currently hold a postseason spot, their last two contests have resulted in losses.

On top of that, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who looked like an MVP candidate through the first 11 games, has fallen back to the pack. Against the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers, he completed just 45.9% of his attempts for 440 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

The dropoff has allowed talking heads and detractors of the quarterback to once again speak negatively of Miami’s captain.

One member of Miami’s secondary, cornerback Keion Crossen, took to Twitter to have his quarterback’s back.

It’s great to see the players rally around their guy and protect him from the vitriol that’s shouted on social media.

Dolphins DB Keion Crossen leaves contest with injury

He’s questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

The Miami Dolphins have another defensive player dealing with an injury, as cornerback and special teams ace Keion Crossen left their matchup with the Cleveland Browns in the second quarter.

The injury happened on a punt return, and Crossen immediately headed back to the locker room with trainers.

On social media, the team announced that the injury is a shoulder issue, and his return to this contest is questionable.

With Noah Igbinoghene inactive this week, Miami could be down to just Xavien Howard, Kader Kohou and Justin Bethel as the primary cornerbacks on the roster. Eric Rowe and Elijah Campbell both have some versatility to play both cornerback and safety.

Keion Crossen leaves game vs. Vikings with knee injury

Miami can’t catch a break right now.

The Miami Dolphins can’t seem to stay healthy, as they are losing players left and right.

After quarterback Skylar Thompson, cornerback Nik Needham, edge rusher Trey Flowers and defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah left the game, cornerback Nik Needham was escorted to the locker room with a knee injury. The team has announced that his return is questionable.

Miami was already down Byron Jones, Needham and rookie Kader Kohou, who was inactive Sunday.

The Dolphins will have to rely on Xavien Howard, Noah Igbinoghene and Eric Rowe to keep up with Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen and company if they want a chance to win.

Dolphins CB laughs at Patriots’ Week 1 game preparation

Will this be bulletin board material for the Patriots?

If the New England Patriots needed bulletin board material, they might have found it from Miami Dolphins defensive back Keion Crossen.

It was announced last week that the Patriots were moving up their travel schedule to try and give themselves some extra time to become acclimated to the suffocating heat and humidity ahead of their Week 1 matchup.

Crossen recently took to social media and posted his thoughts on the team’s alternative approach before facing the Dolphins.

“Lol that won’t help,” Crossen posted on his Instagram story, followed by a couple of crying-laughing emojis.

The Patriots have opened up as 3.5-point underdogs on the road against the Dolphins. It makes sense considering the historic struggles the team has had over the years when playing in South Beach, coupled with the fact that the Dolphins have won the last three consecutive head-to-head meetings.

And yet, of all people, Crossen should know better than to doubt Belichick. The former seventh-round pick of the 2018 NFL draft was taken by the Patriots and was a first-hand witness to the magic carpet ride that was Super Bowl LIII.

He could be served up a harsh reminder if the Patriots are the last ones laughing on Sunday.
