Giants waive CB Rodarius Williams

The New York Giants have waived third-year cornerback Rodarius Williams after he was a healthy scratch on Friday night.

New York Giants cornerback Rodarius Williams didn’t dress for a Friday night preseason game against the Carolina Panthers but he wasn’t injured.

The curious decision gave way to an explanation on Saturday as head coach Brian Daboll revealed that Williams has been waived. The transaction was filed on Saturday morning.

Williams, a sixth-round pick of the Giants in the 2021 NFL draft, flashed early in his career but quickly became hampered by injuries. He suffered a torn ACL in Week 5 of his rookie season and began last season on injured reserve (IR) before being activated in November.

In eight career games (one start), Williams has recorded 16 tackles (16 solo), two passes defensed, and one interception.

With the arrival of rookies Deonte Banks and Tre Hawkins, Williams was bumped down the depth chart and became a bubble player. He struggled in a Week 1 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions and the two sides ultimately parted ways.

It’s unclear if Williams influenced that decision away from the field.

Ironically, Rodarius’ release comes on the very same day his brother, Greedy Williams, was released by the Philadelphia Eagles.

With a need at cornerback and a current opening, it will be interesting to see if the Giants attempt to move on from one Williams only to pursue another.

7 Giants on the roster bubble heading into second preseason game

Here’s a look at seven (of many) New York Giants players who are on the roster bubble headed into Week 2 of the preseason against Carolina.

The New York Giants host the Carolina Panthers in the middle preseason game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Friday night.

Jobs are on the line and several players will have to display that they are serious about making the 53-man roster, which will be cut in less than two weeks.

Here are seven players (of many) who are on the roster ‘bubble’ and need to have a good showing in this game.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 21-16 preseason loss to Lions

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the preseason?

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night at Ford Field and fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 21-16.

The game was a tale of two halves as the defense played above board over the first two quarters before deep reserves faltered late. There was more consistency on offense but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing as the O-Line struggled from the kickoff to the final whistle. The lacking depth there is a genuine concern.

But not all was bad. In fact, there was quite a bit of good, especially as it relates to the team’s 2023 NFL draft class.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason-opening loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants fall to Lions: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants fell to the Lions, 21-16, on Friday and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

Editor’s note: Upon reviewing the game, we changed the entry for Deonte Banks, adding detail on what was a bang-bang play and difficult to read in real-time. Giants Wire writers disagreed (and still disagree) on what transpired.

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night against the Detroit Lions and neither team played their key starters. There were a few spot starters on both sides but predominantly, the game featured depth players.

Accordingly, it was a rather ugly performance for each team. There was more bad than good, and neither coach is going to be particularly happy on Saturday morning.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from Fright night’s Giants’ victory/defeat.

7 Giants on the roster bubble heading into first preseason game

Here’s a look at seven New York Giants players on the roster bubble headed into their Friday night preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

The New York Giants open their preseason on Friday night against the Detroit Lions following two joint practices earlier this week.

It remains unclear who head coach Brian Daboll will play and who he won’t, but it’s a safe bet that players on the roster bubble will see extended time. The Giants have several tough decisions to make in a few weeks and would like to compile as much information as possible.

It’s make-or-break time for a number of players, including the following seven who are firmly on the bubble. Some will play, potentially helping their chances, and at least one will not.

Giants, Lions wrap up joint practice No. 2: News, notes and quotes

News, notes and quotes from the final day of joint practices between the New York Giants, who rebounded nicely, and the Detroit Lions.

After a rough day on Tuesday, the New York Giants took the field for the second and final joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday. They’ll enjoy an off day on Thursday before their preseason opener on Friday night.

Prior to practice, head coach Brian Daboll refused to acknowledge the struggles of his team the day prior, instead calling the joint practices “productive” multiple times.

“It’s practice so we are out here competing. I thought it was productive. We will go out here and try to have another one today,” Daboll said. “I’m not worried about chatter; I just want to go out there and have a good practice. Our guys were ready to go, I thought we had a good productive practice, and we will try to have one today.”

Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the joint practices should serve the team well enough to leave their starters out on Friday but Daboll wouldn’t commits to the same. It remains unclear who will and will not play.

“It’s just kind of like a Friday in the regular season. We’ll talk about that as a coaching staff tonight, tomorrow and come up with our decisions,” Daboll said.

Back on the field, all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense, who were looking to rebound from an ugly performance.

Here are some notes, takeaways, and video highlights from the final joint practice between the Giants and Lions:

Giants’ Rodarius Williams named a player who ‘could be cut’

New York Giants CB Rodarius Williams has been named a potential cut candidate after two injury-plagued seasons.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen are going to face some tough personnel choices at the end of training camp. They have stocked up at several positions this offseason, which means some difficult decisions will have to be made.

Among them are who get their walking papers at wide receiver and cornerback — two positions of quantity.

At cornerback, the Giants added Deonte Banks, who is likely to start, and Tre Hawkins through the 2023 NFL draft. They also signed Amani Oruwariye and Leonard Johnson in free agency.

In total, there are now 12 cornerbacks on the 90-man roster with the 53-man roster likely to carry just six or seven. That doesn’t bode well for the back-end of the team’s depth and David Kenyon of Bleacher Report believes that leaves Rodarius Williams as one of the odd men out.

Rodarius Williams flashed his ability with 15 tackles in three games last season after recovering from an ACL injury. Is the third-year corner part of the Giants’ plans, though? His inconsistent usage is concerning, and New York deepened the position this offseason—especially with first-round pick Deonte Banks. Williams may find that his opportunity to play is elsewhere.

A sixth-round pick in 2021, Williams has shown some promise but has been largely limited due to injuries over his first two years. He appeared in just two games last season, recording 15 tackles, two passes defensed and one interception.

Williams certainly faces an uphill battle here in 2023 and if he is ultimately waived, he could be a candidate for the team’s practice squad.

19 players Giants have drafted from Senior Bowl over last 6 years

Since 2017, the New York Giants have drafted 19 players who had practiced during Senior Bowl week or played in the Senior Bowl itself.

The NFL draft run-up begins this week with the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The New York Giants have always had a presence at the game and have drafted many a player who has participated in the game over the years.

Here are some players the Giants met and scouted at the game and then drafted going back to 2017.

Giants-Eagles Week 14: Offense, defense and special teams snap counts

The New York Giants lost their Week 14 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Here are the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams.

The New York Giants took one on the chin Sunday afternoon. They were completely dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles, 48-22, in a game that wasn’t even that close.

The wheels have completely come off in East Rutherford and a 6-1 start has turned into a 7-5-1 mess that resembles much of what Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge left behind.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ latest loss.

Offensive snaps: 66
Defensive snaps: 85
Special teams snaps: 34

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay was limited to just 11 offensive snaps on Sunday and didn’t draw a single target. It’s actually shocking to find out he was even on the field because it wasn’t noticeable throughout the game.

The remaining snap counts were also skewed because the Giants eventually pulled their starters from the game. Most of them, anyway. Only Nick Gates and Jon Feliciano took 100% of all snaps on either side of the ball.

Cornerback Rodarius Williams was a healthy scratch and linebacker Tae Crowder only saw 17 snaps after coming in for the injured Micah McFadden.

Tae Crowder apologizes to Giants teammates, coaches for ‘free me’ tweet

New York Giants LB Tae Crowder apologized to his coaches and teammates after sending a “free me” tweet following a Week 13 tie.

Shortly after the New York Giants and Washington Commanders played to a tie in Week 13, linebacker Tae Crowder hit Twitter with a curious tweet.

“Free me,” he wrote.

It stemmed from apparent frustration over his lacking role. The former starting inside linebacker played zero defensive snaps in the tie and has seen his role decrease significantly in recent weeks.

“I’m more of a TikTok guy,” defensive coordinator Wink Martindale said when asked about Crowder’s tweet. “TikTok has good golf tips on there, scare cam’s one of my favorite things to see, and a lot of comedians.

“It was taken care of internally, and like I said I’m not on Twitter, so I didn’t really see it.”

After the tweet created a stir, Crowder apologized to his coaches and teammates following a private meeting with head coach Brian Daboll.

“I really wasn’t thinking much of it,” Crowder told the New York Post. “I’ve seen a lot of fans talking about a release or whatever, but I’m all for my team. I just want to do anything I can to help the team win.

“I apologized to all my teammates just because I never want to cause anything to the program. I never want to be that guy to be a distraction. All my teammates know I’m not that type of guy.”

Although Crowder offered an apology, he acknowledged his frustration with his diminished role.

“I’m a guy who loves to compete and I just haven’t been on the field like I used to be,” he added. “Once you can’t go out and help your team — whether you win or lose — it’s frustrating.”

Cornerback Rodarius Williams also expressed frustration with his role in Week 13 but it’s unclear if he also offered up an apology over his tweets.
