All 10 times the Jaguars have used the franchise tag

The Jaguars appear set to use the franchise tag for a fifth straight offseason.

As of Tuesday, NFL teams are allowed to use the franchise tag or transition tag to retain one player due to become a free agent. And for the fifth straight year, the Jacksonville Jaguars are likely to make use of the tag.

The likeliest scenario is that pass rusher Josh Allen will get the tag after posting a career-best 17.5 sacks during the 2023 season. But even if the Jaguars manage to get a deal done with Allen ahead of the March 5 deadline (which seems unlikely), they’d probably instead use the tag to keep wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

The franchise tag is a tool that guarantees a player, at minimum, a one-year fully guaranteed deal that makes them one of the highest paid players at their position. Teams also have until mid-July to sign a multi-year extension with a tagged player.

While Jacksonville has used it in four straight offseasons, the team only used it six times in the more than two decades prior. Here’s the Jaguars’ entire history of using the franchise tag:

Evan Engram says Josh Allen ‘has to be back’ with Jaguars

Evan Engram says the Jaguars have to do what it takes to keep Josh Allen.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will undoubtedly make roster changes during the 2024 offseason after a tailspin at the end of 2023 cost them a spot in the playoffs. But one move that isn’t an option, according to tight end Evan Engram, is the team splitting with pass rusher Josh Allen.

“He has to be back. He has to be,” Engram told reporters at the 2024 Pro Bowl Games, via 1010XL. “He’s been in a staple in [Jacksonville] since he got there. The year he just had, you can’t let that go. You can’t let that go. I think he’s in a good spot. I know we want him back, I know upstairs wants him back. I told him just be patient and everything he’s ever wanted will come to him.”

Allen, 26, is set to become a free agent next month, but Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke has guaranteed that won’t come to fruition. Given the sluggish start to negotiations between the pass rusher and the team, the likely scenario is that Allen receives the franchise tag from the Jaguars.

If any player could relate to the situation, it’s Engram.

The veteran tight end signed a one-year deal with the Jaguars in 2022, but after his first season with the team Baalke told reporters Engram “will be on this football team” in 2023. Engram was then franchised by Jacksonville and, finally, signed a three-year, $42.5 million deal with the team in July.

While Engram later said he “never doubted” that the Jaguars valued him and wanted to keep him, he also said “it was a roller coaster” ride of an offseason.

The 2024 offseason could be a roller coaster ride for Allen too. But like Engram said, there’s no way the Jaguars can afford to let the pass rusher walk.

Every Jaguars highlight from the 2024 Pro Bowl Games

If you missed Josh Allen, Evan Engram, and Ross Matiscik at the Pro Bowl, we’ve got you covered.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had three players participating in the 2024 Pro Bowl Games this year: pass rusher Josh Allen, tight end Evan Engram, and long snapper Ross Matiscik.

Unlike previous years, the weekend of festivities for the NFL’s all-star selections didn’t end with an actual football game.

Instead, the NFL recently replaced the game with a series of skills competitions and events culminating in a flag football game to determine the winning conference.

That meant a dizzying few days of mini-games and highlights involving Allen, Engram, and Matiscik. If you couldn’t keep up with all the Pro Bowl action in Orlando, Fla., have no fear. We’ll get you all caught up on all the Jaguars highlights from the 2024 Pro Bowl Games:

Top 15 plays of the Jaguars’ 2023 season

The Jaguars didn’t end up in the playoffs like they hoped, but they still made several impressive plays en route to a winning record.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t end up in the playoffs as fans hoped and most expected.

Instead of defending their AFC South title from the season prior, the team lost five of its last six to stumble to a 9-8 finish. That wasn’t enough to beat out the Houston Texans for the division crown and didn’t earn them a wild card berth either.

While the ho-hum ending to the year left a sour taste, Jacksonville’s talented roster still turned out a few impressive plays en route to a winning record in the 2023 season.

Here are the Jaguars’ top 15 plays of the season:

How to watch 2024 Pro Bowl Games: TV channel, time, stream

Here’s how to tune in when Josh Allen, Evan Engram, and Ross Matiscik compete against the best players in the NFL.

The Pro Bowl looks a little different after the NFL overhauled the event last year. A half-hearted football game between players uninterested in tackling is no more and its been replaced by a two-day skills competition.

On Thursday, players who were selected by fans, coaches, and their peers, will compete in “Best Catch,” “Precision Passing,” “Closest to the Pin,” “High Stakes,” “Snap Shots,” and “Epic Pro Bowl Dodgeball.”

On Sunday, it’ll be “Kick Tac Toe,” “Move the Chains,” “Gridiron Gauntlet,” “Madden NFL Head-to-Head,” “Tug-of-War,” and “NFL Flag football.”

Among those competing in the events are three Jacksonville Jaguars players: pass rusher Josh Allen, tight end Evan Engram, and long snapper Ross Matiscik.

Pro Bowl Games events announced for Jaguars’ 3 participants

The Pro Bowl Games will get started tonight and Josh Allen, Evan Engram, and Ross Matiscik will all participate in events.

The 2024 Pro Bowl Games will begin Thursday night with several mini-games between the best players in the AFC and NFC.

That’ll include three members of the Jacksonville Jaguars who earned Pro Bowl honors: outside linebacker Josh Allen, tight end Evan Engram, and long snapper Ross Matiscik.

Unlike the past, there won’t be a full-fledged football game highlighting the NFL’s all-stars. Instead, smaller skill competitions will lead up to a flag football game Sunday to decide the winning conference.

Last year, quarterback Trevor Lawrence and return specialist Jamal Agnew were the Jaguars’ two Pro Bowlers. During the flag football game, Lawrence had a couple of touchdown passes, including a deep bomb to Stefon Diggs.

This year, here’s what Allen, Engram, and Matiscik will be doing at the event in Orlando, Fla.

Evan Engram replacing Travis Kelce in 2024 Pro Bowl Games

Evan Engram will join Josh Allen and Ross Matiscik on the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram was added to the AFC roster for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games as a replacement for the Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce, the xxx announced Monday.

Engram, 29, recorded 114 receptions, 963 yards, and four touchdowns during the 2023 regular season. It was the second most catches in a single season ever recorded by a tight end, just two behind the record of 116 receptions set by Zach Ertz in 2018.

So it was a relative surprise when Engram was left off the Pro Bowl rosters in the first place. Kelce and the Cleveland Browns’ David Njoku received the two AFC spots instead, but the former is headed to Super Bowl LVIII and won’t participate in the Pro Bowl Games.

Engram, who earned Pro Bowl honors during his 2020 season with the New York Giants, will join pass rusher Josh Allen and long snapper Ross Matiscik as the three Jaguars represented at the event. It’s the most for the franchise since the 2019 season when Jacksonville had four Pro Bowlers.

Jaguars players back Trevor Lawrence after rocky 2023: ‘He’s our guy’

Doug Pederson and Jaguars players say they believe Trevor Lawrence is still the face of the franchise in Jacksonville.

It’s safe to say Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t have the season many hoped for.

Lawrence went into the season as a dark horse candidate for the MVP award. But after the 2023 season, talking heads will spend the offseason deciding if he’s even a top 10 signal caller.

It’s clear he and the Jaguars have plenty of room to grow, but those in the Jacksonville organization say they aren’t worried about the man under center.

“Everybody is going to have an opinion, that’s the world now,” Jaguars tight end Evan Engram said Monday. “Everybody has access to getting their opinions out there … from what I see, as a player in this locker room, a player in the trenches, on the field, he’s our guy.”

In 16 games, Lawrence passed for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He completed 65.6 percent of his passes, took 35 sacks, and added four rushing touchdowns. Lawrence’s shortcomings weren’t solely his fault, however.

Among a slew of issues was his chemistry, or lack thereof, with first-year Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley. They showed flashes, individually and together, but a shortened offseason didn’t make their job any easier.

“Obviously we only had one year together; sometimes we weren’t there because we didn’t have the chemistry.” Ridley said. “I came straight out of suspension. Just one day, they told me I could come back. I drove, I flew here, everything was fast for me.

“We worked as hard as we could with the time and honestly, we worked ourselves tired. … We did everything, and unfortunately we didn’t get the results that we wanted. We worked for it, though.”

Ridley ended the season with 76 catches for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns.

Pederson pointed to turnovers as a point of emphasis, calling it “the biggest thing that he has to focus on moving forward.” Lawrence echoed his coach’s message because minimizing turnovers can result in more wins.

“I’ve got to own my part, and I’ve got to take better care of the ball; that’s going to give us a better chance to win a lot of these games,” Lawrence said. “In this league, if the quarterback plays well, it gives you a chance every week, and I can do a better job of just being consistently the player I know I can be.”

Pederson said there were games where more was asked of Lawrence, but he didn’t think they asked too much of the third-year quarterback.

“He’s very capable of handling what we gave him,” Pederson said. “Trevor is very capable, and we’re very confident with that and with him.”

Lawrence is set to play the 2024 season on the fourth and final season of his rookie contract, although the Jaguars have the option in a few months to pick up a fifth-year option and keep him under contract through 2025. The team is also allowed now to sign the quarterback to an extension, if it decides that Lawrence really is the Jaguars’ passer for the foreseeable future.

Studs and duds in the Jaguars’ 28-20 loss vs. Titans

Duds were everywhere in the Jaguars’ season-ending loss.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ season ended Sunday with a 28-20 loss in a win-or-go-home Week 18 game against the Tennessee Titans.

For the offense, things started strong in Nashville. In Trevor Lawrence’s return from a shoulder sprain that caused him to sit out   a game for the first time in his career, he led the team into field goal range on the first possession and connected with Calvin Ridley on a 59-yard deep ball early in the second quarter.

While Jacksonville’s offense lagged at times, the issue for most of the day was the defense. Despite focusing on stopping the wholly unsurprising run-heavy approach from the Titans, the Jaguars allowed 8.1 yards per carry to the duo of Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears.

With the season on the line, the Jaguars turned in a dud and lost for the fifth time in six weeks. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s not many Jaguars performances to celebrate in Week 18:
