Commanders sign tight end Kaden Smith

The Commanders added some tight end depth Sunday.

With veteran tight end Logan Thomas sidelined with a calf injury, the Washington Commanders signed a reinforcement Sunday morning.

Washington signed 26-year-old tight Kaden Smith, who spent the past three seasons with the New York Giants. Smith appeared in 33 games with 22 starts for New York, recording 52 receptions for 413 yards and three touchdowns.

In a corresponding move, the Commanders released punter Colby Wadman. Washington had signed Wadman last week as longtime punter Tress Way was dealing with a back injury. Wadman punted in Friday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Thomas has been sidelined with a calf injury for over a week. Head coach Ron Rivera said last week that the injury wasn’t serious but more of a case where the Commanders were playing it safe with the 32-year-old, who missed three games last season with a calf injury. Rivera said the current injury isn’t as severe as the one that cost Thomas time last season.

Smith entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2019. The 49ers waived him that September, and the Giants claimed him. The Giants waived Smith in March 2022 after he failed a physical.

Smith signed with the Colts in May but was waived on Aug. 1.

In Washington, Smith joins a tight end room featuring Thomas, John Bates, Cole Turner, Curtis Hodges and Brandon Dillon.

Colts sign OT Dan Skipper, waive two players

The Colts signed OL Dan Skipper and waived OT Jordan Murray and TE Kaden Smith.

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent offensive tackle Dan Skipper and waived offensive tackle Jordan Murray and tight end Kaden Smith, the team announced Tuesday.

Skipper, 28, entered the league as an undrafted free-agent rookie out of Arkansas in 2017. He initially signed with the Dallas Cowboys (2017) and has had three separate stints with the Detroit Lions (2017-2018, 2019-2020, 2021-2022) with other stops between those stints.

Skipper has appeared in 29 career games and has made five starts, all five of which came in 2022 with the Lions at right and left guard.

Murray signed with the Colts in 2022 and spent the season on the practice squad. He received a futures contract in the offseason. Smith was signed in free agency this offseason following the 2023 NFL draft.

Here are five bold predictions for the Colts as they enter training camp.

Training camp awaits the Indianapolis Colts, and so do many new possibilities. With a revamped coaching staff and several new pieces from the draft and free agency, the Colts are ready to put it together.

Entering new seasons always brings more hope regardless of how a team may have finished the previous season. The Colts are a prime example of this considering their new additions at head coach and quarterback.

The Indianapolis Colts signed free-agent tight end Kaden Smith and waived undrafted rookie free-agent guard Harris LaChance, the team announced Wednesday.

A former sixth-round pick with the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 NFL draft, Smith also spent parts of three seasons with the New York Giants (2019-2021).

Smith, 26, ended the 2021 season on the injured reserve list and was waived during the 2022 offseason after failing a physical.

In 33 career games (22 starts) all with the Giants, Smith recorded 52 receptions on 66 targets for 413 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith will be joining a crowded tight end room that includes Mo Alie-Cox, Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, Alec Ogletree, Pharoah Brown and 2023 fifth-round pick Will Mallory.

Giants roster turnover: 13 new Week 1 starters compared to 2021

When the New York Giants take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 1, 13 different players will start compared to Week 1 of last season.

The New York Giants saw significant change this offseason as yet another rebuild was ushered in under the leadership of first-time general manager Joe Schoen.

In addition to a front office and scouting overhaul, the Giants also saw significant roster turnover. Nearly 50 percent of the roster was altered in some way, shape or form and that will be represented in Week 1 of the 2022 regular season.

When the Giants take on the Tennessee Titans, 13 Week 1 starters from last year’s team will have been replaced — some outright and some due to injury.

Here’s a quick look at those 13 changes from 2021 to 2022.

Giants waive Kaden Smith, re-sign David Sills

The New York Giants have waived TE Kaden Smith and re-signed WR David Sills.

The New York Giants have waived tight end Kaden Smith, creating an additional gap at the position.

Smith, 24, played in nine games in 2021 before being placed on inured reserve with a knee injury. He was claimed by the Giants off waivers in September of 2019 after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers, who selected him in the 6th round out of Stanford in that spring’s NFL draft.

As a rookie with the Giants, Smith caught 31 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns and appeared to develop a rapport with fellow rookie, quarterback Daniel Jones.

But Smith couldn’t build on that relationship. He only caught 21 passes for 145 yards in his next 24 games and, now, becomes expendable.

Smith was scheduled to earn $2.54 million this year, all in salary, so his release will increase the Giants’ salary cap space by that amount.

The Giants now have just three tight ends under contract for 2022 — Jake Hausmann, Rysen John and Chris Myarick.

Meanwhile, the team also announced that wide receiver David Sills, who was an impending exclusive rights free agent, has been re-signed.

Finally, the Giants made the signing of offensive lineman Matt Gono official.

Giants’ Daniel Jones, Adoree’ Jackson among 4 out vs. Dolphins

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and CB Adoree’ Jackson are among four out vs. the Miami Dolphins, while two wide receivers are doubtful.

The New York Giants enter Week 13 with an opportunity to get back into the playoff hunt, but they will have to do it extremely shorthanded.

Head coach Joe Judge announced on Friday that quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) had not been cleared for contact and was subsequently ruled out. Veteran Mike Glennon will draw the start in his place.

In addition to Jones, the news was nearly as bad for wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Sterling Shepard, each of whom were listed as doubtful.

Meanwhile, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson was also ruled out and right tackle Nate Solder was added to the injury report as questionable.

The Giants’ final injury report can be found below:

Out: QB Daniel Jones (neck), CB Adoree’ Jackson (quad), TE Kaden Smith (knee), LB Trent Harris (ankle)

Doubtful: WR Sterling Shepard (quad), WR Kadarius Toney (oblique/quad)

Questionable: LT Nate Solder (elbow), TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle), WR John Ross (illness/quad), FB Cullen Gillaspia (calf)

Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ final injury report can also be found below (awaiting further updates):

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones, Sterling Shepard limited in practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones and WR Sterling Shepard were limited in practice on Thursday. Six others did not participate.

The New York Giants once again took the practice field on Thursday and there was hope for some clarity among injured players.

Quarterback Daniel Jones strapped on his helmet and participated in his second consecutive practice. Offensive assistant Freddie Kitchens was matter-of-fact in saying he expects Jones to be under center in Week 13.

The news wasn’t nearly as positive for wide receiver Kadarius Toney, who was relegated to side work with trainers. His status for Sunday’s game in Miami is very much in doubt.

Things are uncertain for wide receiver Sterling Shepard as well. The veteran did limited on-field work — a step up from Wednesday — but likely needs to clear more hurdles before returning.

Finally, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson seemed somewhere in between working on the side and lingering on the field. Either way, his status does not appear promising.

Thursday’s full injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LB Trent Harris (ankle), FB Cullen Gillaspia (calf), CB Adoree’ Jackson (quad), WR John Ross (illness), TE Kaden Smith (knee), WR Kadarius Toney (oblique/quad)

Limited participant: QB Daniel Jones (neck), TE Kyle Rudolph (ankle), WR Sterling Shepard (quad)

Full participant: N/A
