Cowboys add former first-rounder to practice squad; team currently has 4 centers

From @ToddBrock24f7: The signing of award-winner Billy Price could speak to the severity of Tyler Biadasz’s injury; Brock Hoffman is out of gameday elevations.

The Cowboys are welcoming yet another former first-round draft pick to the locker room.

Dallas has signed center Billy Price to the practice squad. Price’s addition fills the spot left open when C.J. Goodwin was promoted to the active roster prior to Week 3’s game in Arizona.

Price, who turns 29 in October, was the 21st overall pick in the 2018 draft, selected out of Ohio State by the Bengals. After 42 game appearances in three seasons with Cincinnati, the 6-foot-4-inch former Rimington Award winner was traded to the Giants in 2021 and then bounced from Las Vegas to Arizona last season, and finally New Orleans this past summer.

His signing by Dallas comes after a 28-16 loss in which the offensive line saw major substitutions, including at center. Starter Tyler Biadasz was out with a hamstring injury; Brock Hoffman took his place in the lineup, but Sunday marked his third and final gameday elevation from the practice squad. He must be signed to the active roster in order to be active again this season.

Price joins Sean Harlow as the team’s practice squad centers. Harlow has two gameday elevations remaining in 2023.

The Cowboys listed just one center on Aug. 29’s initial 53-man roster. Less than one month later, the club suddenly has four of them.

This development could speak to the severity of Biadasz’s injury and/or the long-term expectations of Hoffman and/or Harlow. But it’s a situation that bears watching.

Saints release backup center Billy Price with non-football injury designation

The New Orleans Saints released backup center Billy Price before training camp, with a non-football injury designation:

This was a bit of a surprise: the New Orleans Saints announce Thursday that they released backup center Billy Price with a non-football injury designation, having signed him after a tryout during minicamp practices in June. They’ll need to look for a different option to compete for the job of backing up Erik McCoy, who has missed nine games with injuries over the last two years.

Price, the Cincinnati Bengals’ former first-round pick, was an experienced starter in the NFL, so it’s disappointing to see the Saints part ways with him. Whether Price suffered an injury while training in the offseason or in some other accident is unclear but he’ll be recovering away from the team while exploring his next opportunities. Good luck to him.

Undrafted rookie Alex Pihlstrom (Illinois) is the only other center on the roster behind McCoy, so look for the Saints to bring in another veteran to push him over the summer. New Orleans has shown interest in another former Ohio State Buckeye, Pat Elflein, though he’s looking for an opportunity to compete for a starting job. Price’s departure leaves the Saints with an open roster spot.

The New Orleans Saints announced a series of roster moves on Thursday evening, noting that the team had added three new offensive players after tryouts at minicamp. They’ll have opportunities to compete for roster spots during training camp and this summer’s preseason games, but each of these players is very much on the bubble going deeper into the offseason. Saints host former Bengals first-round pick Billy Price on free agent visit

The Saints hosted free agent Billy Price on a free agent visit. The ex-Bengals first-round pick was a three-time All-Big Ten center and team captain at Ohio State:

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

This is interesting: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported that the New Orleans Saints met with former Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Billy Price, selected at No. 21 overall in the 2018 draft. He was traded top the New York Giants in 2021 and started 15 games for them, but he spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals last season.

A three-time All-Big Ten center and two-time team captain at Ohio State, Price was college teammates with Saints stars like Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore but he hasn’t experienced as much success at the pro level. Price has short arms for someone his height (with a wingspan of just 75.25 inches; for perspective, there wasn’t a single offensive lineman at this year’s Senior Bowl with a wingspan under 77 inches) and it’s led to him grasping at opponents as they pass him by, too often resulting in penalties.  He’s also simply dealt with the yips: Price has been fouled 31 times on 3,091 career snaps across 69 games and 16 of those penalties were false start infractions.

But the Saints like to keep a strong backup plan at center in light of recent injuries to Erik McCoy, who missed five games in 2021 and four in 2022; Cesar Ruiz has been his principle replacement, but that opens another hole at right guard. Guys like Will Clapp and Josh Andrews have filled in, too, and New Orleans has also stashed veterans such as Nick Martin and Austin Reiter on their practice squad, though they’ve left for other opportunities before their services were needed. Right now the only other player with much of a resume at center is undrafted rookie Alex Pihlstrom (Illinois). Maybe they see Price as someone similar with extensive pro experience who could be brought in later.

Cardinals announce signing of pair of CBs

They add cornerbacks Dylan Mabin and Bobby Price to the offseason roster.

The Arizona Cardinals began their final week of voluntary OTAs and added a pair of cornerbacks to the roster.

They announced Monday afternoon the signing of cornerbacks Dylan Mabin and Bobby Price.

Mabin is 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds and played collegiately at Fordham. He was an undrafted rookie in 2019 and signed originally with the Raiders. Since then, he has also spent time with the Vikings, Saints and Falcons.

His four career games came in 2020, three with the Vikings and one with the Raiders.

He has two career tackles.

Price is 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds. He spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Lions after he signed with them as an undrafted rookie in 2020 out of Norfolk State.

He has played 22 games, 15 of them in 2021, with 23 total tackles and three pass breakups. Eight of his tackles have been on special teams and he also had a 17-yard reception in 2021 on a fake punt.

The signings give Arizona 91 players on the roster, so there will be need to be a corresponding player cut on Tuesday.

Free agent options to replace Rodney Hudson at center for Cardinals

Rodney Hudson is expected to retire this offseason. These are some veteran free agent options for the Cardinals who make sense.

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to be in the market for a new starting center. The team expects Rodney Hudson to retire after playing only four games in 2022, sidelined most of the year with a knee injury.

The most likely scenario for the Cardinals is to sign a veteran center in free agency because they can’t count on drafting a center to start as a rookie.

Who are some options?

We go over a few below.

Cardinals added OL Billy Price ‘as insurance’ for O-line

With Justin Pugh, Max Garcia and Rodney Hudson all dealing with injuries, Price is a decent insurance policy with a bit of experience.

The Arizona Cardinals made a roster move this week, adding center Billy Price to the active roster, signing him from the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.

The move was a bit of a surprise until the team released its first injury report of the week Wednesday. Starting left guard Justin Pugh, starting center Rodney Hudson and backup guard Max Garcia all did not practice Wednesday with injuries.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said the addition of Price, who has really only played center in the NFL but can play guard as well, was because of the uncertainty of the available linemen for this week.

“It’s one of those deals where it’s going to be basically until the weekend before we know who can go,” Kingsbury said Wednesday. “You all saw that we signed Billy Price and that’s really as insurance to see who all can play and who can’t numbers-wise.”

Pugh is day-to-day with an elbow injury. Garcia has a toe injury and Hudson, who normally would have missed Wednesday’s practice with a day off for rest, is listed with a knee injury for the second week in a row.

If neither Pugh nor Garcia can play, then backup center Sean Harlow would be called upon to start, leaving the Cardinals with no backup center except for rookie Lecitus Smith, who has not played center before coming to the NFL.

Having Price gives them experience behind Hudson if he gets hurt.

Ideally, he won’t have to play, but he is there if things get bad.

Former Ohio State first-round draft pick signed by the Arizona Cardinals

Former Rimington Trophy winner, Billy Price gets another shot out west after signing a deal with the Arizona Cardinals.

Former Ohio State center and 2017 Rimington Trophy winner, Billy Price, was signed by the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. Price had spent the first part of the 2022 season on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.

Price was a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018. The former Buckeye spent three years in the Queen City appearing in 42 games and starting 19. Price was then traded to the New York Giants for B.J. Hill and a seventh-round pick in 2021. Hill became a key piece in Cincinnati’s run to Super Bowl LVI.

Price played in 16 games for the Giants and started 15 of those games. He would not resign with the Giants, eventually landing in Las Vegas before being scooped up by the Cardinals.

Price should be able to add depth to a Cardinal team looking to make another playoff run. The Cardinals currently sit 2-2 in the NFC West tied for first place.

Cardinals sign OL Billy Price, cut WR Andy Isabella

The Cardinals say goodbye to the former 2019 second-round pick to add offensive line depth.

The Arizona Cardinal announced a pair of roster moves on Tuesday for the active roster. They signed offensive lineman Billy Price off the practice squad of the Las Vegas Raiders and, to make room for him, released receiver Andy Isabella.

Price is in his fifth NFL season. He was drafted in the first round in 2018 by the Cincinnati Bengals, for whom he played for three seasons. He played for the New York Giants last season.

In four seasons, he has played in 58 games and started 34 of them, including 15 last season with the Giants.

The Cardinals gave him a look in the offseason, bringing him in for a visit back in May.

The move marks the end of Isabella’s rocky time with the Cardinals. Drafted in the second round in 2019, he has never been able to crack the playing rotation consistently and has largely been a disappointment.

In four seasons, he finishes with 33 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns.

What the roster moves mean

The addition of Price is interesting.

Starting left guard Justin Pugh reinjured his elbow and had to leave Sunday’s game.

If he has to miss time, it could mean that Sean Harlow would start at left guard, leaving only rookie Lecitus Smith as a backup center, something the team might not be ready to have him do.

If Hudson is injured, then Harlow would start at center.

It also seems that, with the release of Isabella, that receiver Antoine Wesley, currently on injured reserve and designated to return, is likely to return this week.

Practice squad moves

The Cardinals also announced moves on the practice squad.

They announced the signing of kicker Matt Ammendola, a move made to deal with Matt Prater’s hip injury. This move was previously reported.

To make room for Ammendola, the Cardinals released quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, as Colt McCoy has returned to practice and is designated to return from injured reserve.
