Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo wins NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

The Atlanta Falcons turned in their most complete performance of the season during Sunday’s 29-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts. The offense stepped up, the defense came through and Younghoe Koo did what he always does.

The Falcons kicker was responsible for more than half of the team’s total points, going 5-for-5 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra-point attempts. Koo has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in Week 16.

Koo has converted 30 of 33 field goals for the season. While the offense has frequently underachieved, Koo’s reliable leg has helped the Falcons stay competitive most weeks.

On Sunday, Koo will look to help Atlanta secure its eighth win of the season when the team takes on the Chicago Bears.

WATCH: Falcons’ Younghoe Koo’s journey to become NFL’s leading kicker

When the Atlanta Falcons signed Younghoe Koo late in the 2019 season, few imagined he would go on to become the most accurate kicker in NFL history. Koo’s rise to greatness has been incredible to watch over the last four seasons in Atlanta.

Regardless of whether or not the offense shows up each week, Koo’s consistent and clutch kicking has helped this Falcons team stay in countless games. For his career, Koo has converted on 146 of 162 field-goal attempts (NFL-record 90.1 percent).

Success hasn’t always come easy for the 29-year-old. Koo’s first NFL gig with the Chargers in 2016 didn’t last long after he missed a few potential game-winning kicks.

NFL Films released a video compilation showing the ups and downs of Koo’s career thus far. Watch below, as shared by NFL Films’ Twitter account:

Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo is ‘good to go’ for Sunday’s game against the Saints

Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo is officially good to go for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, head coach Arthur Smith told reporters on Friday. Koo missed Wednesday’s practice and was limited on Thursday due to a back injury.

While the team is grateful to have its starting kicker back, Atlanta won’t have wide receiver Mack Hollins in Week 12, per ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke is questionable as he deals with a hamstring injury. The Falcons named Desmond Ridder the starting quarterback earlier this week and said Logan Woodside would serve as the backup if Heinicke can’t play on Sunday.

Saints and Falcons list 13 combined players on first Week 12 injury report

The Saints and Falcons listed 13 combined players on the first Week 12 injury report, including Atlanta’s Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo:

And we’re off. The New Orleans Saints returned from their bye week and listed seven players on the first injury report ahead of Week 12’s game with the Atlanta Falcons — who had six of their own receiving treatment at Wednesday’s practice session.

Most notably for Atlanta: former Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo, who didn’t practice while managing a back injury. He’s been a legitimate difference-maker for the Falcons in recent years and any ailment throwing him off his game could be big for New Orleans.

As for the Saints: right tackle Ryan Ramczyk and tight end Jimmy Graham were absent on their usual Wednesday rest days, while quarterback Derek Carr practiced fully (though he’s still in concussion protocol). Cornerback Marshon Lattimore, offensive lineman James Hurst, and running back Kendre Miller were all non-participants, though defensive end Isaiah Foskey was limited.

Across Weeks 7 and 8 of the 2023 season, over 330 players and coaches will return to the field wearing international flag decals — with players adding flags to their helmets and coaches wearing patches on jackets — to represent the ever-growing pool of various nationalities and cultures that make up the League.

Atlanta will have 11 players and two coaches wearing flag decals over the next two weeks. Here’s a list of each participant and the country they’re representing.

Younghoe Koo field goal gives Falcons victory over Texans in final seconds

Younghoe Koo wins it for the Falcons with a late field goal

The Atlanta Falcons are over .500 after five games in one of the quietly surprising facts of the 2023 season.

The Falcons got a 37-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo with two seconds left on Sunday to edge the Houston Texans, 21-19.

The game-winning drive covered 56 yards over 1:49 and took 10 plays.

The Texans had taken the lead with 1:49 left on a TD pass from C.J. Stroud to Dalton Schultz.

Stroud, the second pick in the 2023 NFL draft, still has not thrown an interception.

Atlanta is now 3-0 at home.

FOX’s broadcast cut out during the game-winning kick.
