Texas Recruiting: Longhorns lose out on top WR to USC

One of the top wide receivers in the state and Texas Longhorns’ target Quaydarius Davis commits to USC.

The Texas Longhorns had their eyes set on one of the top wide receivers in the state, Quaydarius Davis of Skyline (Dallas, TX). According to 247’s prospect page, Davis was rated the 17th wide receiver in the country and 17th rated player in the state according to their composite rankings. He was once committed to SMU but then changed his commitment to Texas on June 9, 2019. Only to then decommit from the Longhorns on November 11th of that same year.

Despite re-opening up his recruiting, some still felt that the Longhorns were in the running to land the state’s top receiver. However, Davis committed to the Southern California Trojans on May 1, 2020. A school that he had yet to even visit.

Ryan Young of Rivals’ USC website details how hard the Trojans were going after Davis. This could be taken as a shot at how lackadaisical the staff at Texas were in terms of targeting him to come to the Longhorns. This marks the second time in a calendar year that a receiver chose USC over Texas. Bru McCoy enrolled at Texas before transferring to USC, the school he was once committed to before eventually landing in Southern Cal.

Georgia football offers 2022 DT out of Missouri

Saturday, North Kansas City High School DT Domonique Orange tweeted about receiving a scholarship offer from the Georgia football program.

Coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia football staff continue to dish out scholarship offers in the 2022 recruiting class with the most recent one going to defensive tackle Domonique Orange out of North Kansas City High School in Kansas City, Missouri.

Orange (6-4, 300) holds offers from Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, SMU and now Georgia.

Orange doesn’t hold any stars yet, but it’s still early in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Look for young players like Orange to gain some recognition from recruiting sites as camps and visits resume later this year.

Texas Offers 2023 wide receiver from Las Vegas

The Texas Longhorns have offered 2023 wide receiver Zachariah Branch of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. The 5’8″ wide receiver can be a weapon.

The Texas Longhorns staff have offered a 2023 wide receiver out of Las Vegas. Zachariah Branch might be small in stature but the Bishop Gorman product is one that you must keep an eye on at all times. He is very shifty and can make plenty miss in the open field leading to big plays.

A look at the 2021 recruiting class with Dave Campbell’s rankings

We dove into the 2021 recruiting class with Dave Campbell’s recruiting rankings to see just how good the class looks.

The Texas Longhorns have had a busy recruiting cycle regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic putting some strain on their efforts. The 2020 class wrapped up with the edition of Jahdae Barron joining the class that ranked them eighth overall. The Longhorns finished that class with five players ranked in the top 25 of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rankings.

  • No 6- JaQuinden Jackson | QB | Duncanville
  • No 8- Hudson Card | QB | Lake Travis (Austin, TX)
  • No 11- Vernon Broughton II | DE | Cypress Ridge (Houston, TX)
  • No 16- Alfred Collins | DE | Bastrop (Cedar Creek, TX)
  • No 25- Xavion Alford | DB | Shadow Creek (Pearland, TX)

The Longhorn were able to walk away with five of the top five recruits in the state according to the list by Campbell. They also added Troy Omeire (32), Jaylen Garth (34) and Logan Parr (37) to round out the top 40. Looking at the 2021 class, the Texas Longhorns already have commitments from the following players in the top 25 of this year’s rankings:

  • No 3- JaTavion Sanders | DE | Denton Ryan
  • No 15- Billy Bowman | ATH | Denton Ryan
  • No 20- Jalen Milroe | QB | Katy Tompkins
  • No 38- Hayden Connor | OT | Katy Taylor
  • No 39- Derrick Harris | OLB | New Caney

The 2021 recruiting cycles is far from done so this list should only grow with the team being in the mix for some of the best players in the state. In fact here is the list of top players in the rankings with offers from the Longhorns.

  • No 1- Tommy Brockermeyer | OT | All Saints (Fort Worth, TX)
  • No 7- Savion Byrd | OT | Duncanville
  • No 10- Clayton Smith | OLB | Texarkana
  • No 13- Shemar Turner | DE | DeSoto, TX
  • No 16- Ismael Ibraheem | CB | Kimball (Dallas, TX)
  • No 22- Garrett Nussmeier | QB | Flower Mound
  • No 37- JD Coffey | DB | Kennedale

With the level of talent on the radar for the Texas Longhorns and with a new staff doing the recruiting, there is a lot to be excited about. Especially when you consider the future of the program.

May recruiting update: Oklahoma set up for success on offensive line

Here is where Oklahoma’s offensive line board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

With Bill Bedenbaugh tuning Oklahoma into ‘O-Line U’ over the past few seasons, the Sooners are beginning to get the cream of the crop when looking for pass protectors for Lincoln Riley’s beloved gunslingers.

Here is where Oklahoma’s offensive line board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

GUARDS

BRYCE FOSTER–5-STAR–NO. 1 GUARD

Foster, the No. 9 ranked player and the No. 1 ranked offensive guard in the 2021 class is Oklahoma’s to lose. The Katy, Texas (Taylor High School), native is being chased by Oklahoma and not too far behind them are Texas, LSU, and Texas A&M.

TACKLES

TRISTIAN LEIGH-5-STAR–No. 3 TACKLE

Oklahoma has offered and Leigh has shown interest but has yet to head to campus for an official visit. Outside of that, Leigh and his camp have been pretty quiet.

JC LATHAM–4-STAR–no. 12 Tackle

Lantham is peaking the Sooners’ interests and talks continue despite Ohio State being the frontrunner. The 6-foot-6 285-pound IMG Acadamy product has received offers from O-line factories like Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, and LSU. However, it should be noted that Oklahoma is right in the thick of things against the top dogs of the trenches.

SAVION BYRD–4-STAR–No. 13 TACKLE

Not much is known at this moment regarding Byrd. Oklahoma is actively pursuing him and he is likely to take an official visit once possible.

REUBEN FATHEREE II–4-STAR–NO. 26 TACKLE

The Richmond, Texas (Foster High School) native had an unofficial visit on September 1, 2019, making the next logical step for Fatheree being an official visit as soon as possible.

CULLEN MONTGOMERY–3-STAR–NO. 39 TACKLE

Montgomery is currently the only verbal commit on this list. He gave Oklahoma the nod over LSU, Ohio State, and Texas among others. Montgomery committed on January 19, 2020, during his second official visit.

______________________________________________________________

Oklahoma currently has four verbal commitments from 2021 players. Per Rivals, they are No. 50 in the nation in 2021 recruiting with three 3-stars and a solo 4-star committed, but the Sooners can and will shoot up the rankings quickly once a few big dominoes fall.

May recruiting update: Trio of four-star receivers still on the board for Oklahoma

Oklahoma has sent four receivers to the NFL in the last four NFL Drafts. OU still has a trio of 4-star wide recievers on the board for 2021.

Oklahoma has become one of four teams since 2000 to have a wide receiver taken in the first round of the NFL Draft in back-to-back years.

Under Lincoln Riley, the Sooners have put four receivers into the NFL in five seasons with Sterling Shepard, Dede Westbrook, Marquise Brown and CeeDee Lamb. The Sooners have a trio of five-star wide receivers on campus for the 2019 class, and have plenty of talent left on the board for them in 2021.

Here is where Oklahoma’s wide receiver board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

*The star and position rating is according to Rivals.com.

MARIO WILLIAMS—FOUR-STAR—NO. 3 WR

One of the country’s most electrifying recruits has shown a fond interest of Oklahoma. Mario Williams is routinely mentioned alongside five-star quarterback Caleb Williams’ name as the two and the Oklahoma coaching staff continues to hint at something coming.

CODY JACKSON—FOUR-STAR—NO. 31 WR

Cody Jackson is Oklahoma’s longest tenured commitment in the 2021 recruiting class. Jackson hails from the same high school in Texas as star receiver CeeDee Lamb, and that connection paid off early for the Sooners.

JALIL FAROOQ—FOUR-STAR—NO. 33 WR

With Caleb Williams, the range of his brand and following is big back in the Delaware, Maryland, Virginia area. Jalil Farooq is name from the same region of the country that started to get more steam in the recent months.

J. MICHAEL STURDIVANT—THREE-STAR—NO. 56 WR

The most intriguing recruit on either side of the ball for Oklahoma in 2021. J. Michael Sturdivant was an early evaluation by the Sooners and his junior tape speaks volumes into the player he could become. He is probably one of the few bigger bodied receivers that could play a wide receiver role at Oklahoma.

CHRISTIAN LEARY—THREE-STAR—NO. 33 ATH

Christian Leary has been mentioned in the same breath as Caleb Williams and Mario Williams. Leary is a burner from the state of Florida that Oklahoma and a host of other top schools in the country like Ohio State, Alabama and in-state Florida.

KEON COLEMAN—THREE-STAR—UNRANKED WR

Oklahoma is in pursuit of a big bodied receiver in 2021. Keon Coleman is another example of that. The Louisiana native has been talking up Oklahoma quite a bit on Twitter as of late and has been one of the few virtual visitors for Lincoln Riley during the coronavirus pandemic.

May recruiting update: Oklahoma in the running for nations top running backs

Here is where Oklahoma’s quarterback board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

The running back room at Oklahoma is one of the most star-studded position groups not just in the Big 12, but in the history of college football. From Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Joe Washington, and Billy Sims to Adrian Peterson, DeMarco Murray, Samaje Perine, and Joe Mixon, there are always big shoes to fill in the Sooners backfield.

Here is where Oklahoma’s quarterback board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

CAMAR WHEATON—5-STAR—No. 1 RUNNING BACK

When DeMarco Murray was hired as the running backs coach, he was hired to do one thing: Get Camar Wheaton in crimson and cream. The No. 7 overall 2021 prospect is ranked 52 spots above the next closest running back, per rivals. Wheaton is a ‘can’t miss talent’ however, the Sooners need to fight off Texas and Alabama for Wheaton to take his talents from Garland, Texas (Lakeview Centennial High School) to Norman, Oklahoma.

TREVEYON HENDERSON–4-STAR–NO. 3 RUNNING BACK

Despite being verbally committed to Ohio State, everything is still in play for Henderson. Like most of Oklahoma’s recruits, Henderson (Hopewell, Virginia; Hopewell High School) has not yet stepped onto campus for an official visit but it is likely he will once everything gets a little more back to normal.

LJ JOHNSON–4-STAR–NO. 4 RUNNING BACK

Grabbing offers from nearly every Power 5 program, Johnson has taken an official visit to Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. The Cypress, Texas (Cypress Fairbanks High School). Former Oklahoma and current Texas RB coach,  Jay Boulware could affect Johnson’s decision to don burnt orange over crimson.

Four star receiver 2021 receiver Christian Leary included Oklahoma in his final six that he released on Twitter on Friday.

The Orlando, Florida, Native is a three-star according to Rivals.com.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State and West Virginia rounded out the rest of his remaining schools.

Despite his lack of size at 5-foot-9, Leary is already 190 pounds and has blazing speed that Lincoln Riley could add to his arsenal. The Sooners currently have four commits in their 2021 class. Defensive back Jordan Mukes, offensive linemen Cullen Montgomery, defensive end Ethan Downs and receiver Cody Jackson make up Oklahoma’s 2021 class, which ranked 50th in the nation according to Rivals.

Texas currently leads the Big 12 in the 2021 hunt with the 14th ranked class, followed by Iowa State at 23rd and Baylor and West Virginia at 25th and 26th, respectively.
