Senior Bowl Day 2 and Day 3 observations: Players that could fit the Lions

Senior Bowl Day 2 and Day 3 observations: Players that could fit the Lions

Thursday afternoon marked the final day of practices at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. It’s been a great week with beautiful weather and even better play on the field by the players. As we know, all these players are doing everything they can to solidify their draft status.

Certainly, three days of practice should not drastically change a players grade on a teams draft board. That said, these three days of practice should give teams, scouts and analysts the conviction they need when placing these players on the board.

While I’d like to add a player such as Quinyon Mitchell, that dream was short lived for Lions fans. All signs are pointing to the Toledo cornerback being a top-20 pick and there’s a chance he could be the first cornerback off the board. Especially since there’s not a clear-cut cornerback at the top, it could be a group where teams just “pick their flavor.”

With that, I’ve got 8 players that could be the Detroit Lions “type of flavor” for their locker room. Here are my thoughts after day two and day three of the 2024 Senior Bowl:

  • Jackson Powers-Johnson, IOL, Oregon — No doubt about it, one of the best players in Mobile this week was Jackson Powers-Johnson from Oregon. There’s a good chance that he finds his way into the top-25 of the 2024 NFL Draft but crazier things have happened. Especially with an expected run of wide receivers, cornerbacks, quarterbacks and offensive tackles, we could see JPJ fall into the Lions lap with the 29th overall pick. While it’s not a stylish pick, one could argue that the interior offensive line could become one of the biggest needs on the team in the coming weeks. Jonah Jackson and Graham Glasgow are set to hit the market so if either of them end up leaving, JPJ could slide into a starting role at guard. Primarily used as a center with the Ducks, he weighed in at 334 pounds in Mobile and looked better than ever. Always under control with good balance and ability to move in space, JPJ would be an immediate starter for the Lions offensive line.
  • Jamari Thrash, WR, Louisville — Drafting a wide receiver may not be the biggest need for the Lions and we can all get that. However, if the team doesn’t bring back Josh Reynolds, it’ll be interesting how they address the wide receiver room. Looking for another weapon could be in the cards for Detroit and one of the most consistent players all week was Jamari Thrash. He checked into the Senior Bowl at 5’11” and 185 pounds but he just finds way to separate. He’s not a speedster like other receivers but he has great burst and the pacing of his routes is what helps him separate consistently. He could be a potential option somewhere on day two for the Lions in the 2024 NFL Draft.
  • Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame — After talking with Cam Hart during the media portion of practice, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Lions took a liking to him. He’s a professional and carries himself very well. In addition to that, he was knowledgeable to different coverages and feels like a potential fit to Aaron Glenn’s defense that primarily uses Cover 1 and Cover 3. Additionally, Hart told me his film process on PSL’s (pre-snap looks), wide receiver tendencies and more. I think the Lions could fall in love with how he approaches the game of football.
  • Darius Robinson, EDGE, Missouri — Could the Lions consider a hometown kid with the 29th overall pick? If they want Darius Robinson, all signs are pointing to him going much earlier than expected. He’s 6’5″ and 286 pounds with 34 3/4″ arms. Standing out with a muscular frame, Robinson put on a showcase this week. Playing high school football at my rival school of Canton High School, Robinson has had significant growth as a player. He’s versatile with his ability to play from a 2i-technique to a 5-technique. He’s got plenty of power behind his game and he’s able to counter consistently with his power, length and eyes to fool the opposition.
  • Dominick Puni, OL, Kansas — Over the last two days, Dominick Puni consistently stood out. At 6’4″ and 323 pounds, Puni put his versatility on display all week. From playing all five positions, a team like the Lions could take a liking to him. He plays under control and finished plenty of blocks during the 1-on-1 portion of practice. In addition to that, he appeared to be one of the most coachable players on the field. Whenever he made a mistake, he searched for coaching and it felt like the next rep got better for him. As the Lions look for depth up front, I could see them taking a liking to Puni during the draft process.
  • Gabe Hall, IDL, Baylor — Talking with a scout during the first day of practice, he had told me to keep tabs on Gabe Hall. This was near the end of practice so I made a note of it and sure enough, the next two days, Hall made several plays. At 6’5″ and 290 pounds with 34 3/8″ arms, there’s much to be desired with Hall’s skill-set. He looks versatile and athletic enough to play from nose to 4i-technique in the Lions defensive front. He has plenty of power that knocks back offensive lineman and his hands got faster by the day. Whether it be a push-pull move or a swim move, Hall made plays all week. It may take a day two pick but Hall would pair nicely with the Lions depth on the defensive line.
  • T’Vondre Sweat, IDL, Texas — Just a massive human, how could you not want to see Sweat on your team? At 6’4″ and 362 pounds (listed on the team site), Sweat is a load for offensive lineman. The power behind his hands is significant and he should be an A-plus run defender immediately. It’ll be interesting if he ends up becoming a three-down player for a team but his tape suggests he can get after the quarterback. Whether it be an arm-over, push pull move or just a power rush, Sweat made an impact on the Longhorns defense. Having him in Detroit would draw more protection his way and it should free up Alim McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson.
  • J.D. Bertrand, LB, Notre Dame — I’m not sure if the Lions would draft another linebacker in the 2024 NFL Draft but they have drafted one every single year under Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell. With Derrick Barnes suffering a knee injury in the NFC Championship, the Lions could have some concern on his readiness for next season. With that, I could see them taking interest to J.D. Bertrand from Notre Dame. Out of all the players I interviewed this week, he stood out above them all. He loves football and you can see it when he talks about it. At 6’1″ and 235 pounds with 30 1/4″ arms, there could be concern with his lack of length to shed blocks consistently at the next level. However, he told me that they were “stimulus response linebackers” at Notre Dame. He was physical this week and his run fits really stood out above most of the linebackers in Mobile. With the Lions looking for high-character guys that define “grit”, Bertrand could be a player that they fall in love with during the process.

Hastings spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa. The former four-star prospect appeared in one game and made one tackle for the Crimson Tide.

Ohio State football issues availability report for Missouri game, key players revealed

Ohio State football issues availability report for Missouri game, key players revealed #GoBucks

The fine folks with the Ohio State Football team have issued the availability report for the game against the Missouri Tigers and a defensive captain is going to miss his last game as a Buckeye.

It is a bit of a bummer that the Ohio State career of Tommy Eichenberg has ended like this with a season marked by injuries, but most fans saw this coming and it is likely in his best interest. The good news is that we should get extended looks at former five-star recruit, C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers and Cody Simon take on a larger role.

Also in another unsurprising move, Marvin Harrison Jr. is listed as unavailable and most fans saw this coming as well as the first-round lock will be looking to prep for the NFL draft. Again with bad news, comes good news as we should see a much larger role for Carnell Tate tonight. The following is the report in its entirety:

OUT

  • WR Nolan Baudo
  • LB Tommy Eichenberg
  • WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
  • TE Zak Herbstreit
  • SAF Lathan Ransom
  • WR Reis Stocksdale
  • OL Miles Walker
  • SAF Kourt Williams II
  • RB Miyan Williams

3 players were ejected from the Missouri-Arkansas game after a big brawl broke out

Shoves and kicks and punches and all.

No. 9 Missouri’s road game against Arkansas on Friday got heated (and embarrassing) during the second quarter. A small skirmish evolved into a much bigger brawl with kicks and punches thrown before ending with three total players being ejected.

With about six minutes left in the first half with the Tigers having a 10-0 lead, Missouri quarterback Brady Cook threw an incomplete pass but suffered a late hit on the sideline. Officials dealt Arkansas a roughing the passer penalty.

But after the late hit, there was a small sideline skirmish with a handful of Tigers and what appeared to be a large chunk of the Razorbacks’ bench, and things got a little feisty.

The next play — a first-and-goal snap on Arkansas’ eight-yard line — after Cody Schrader rushed up the middle for five yards, Missouri offensive lineman Cam’Ron Johnson pushed Arkansas defensive lineman Zach Williams to the ground multiple times. Johnson seemingly tried to kick Williams in the head, while Williams looked like he tried to keep his legs wrapped around Johnson.

With tensions already high, that set off a large brawl with officials and coaches struggling to get control of the situation.

Players from both sides were pushing and shoving each other as it devolved into a full-on fight with a couple punches thrown. Coaches and officials tried to hold players back and keep those on the bench, well, on the bench.

After the adults in the room got control of the brawl, personal fouls were handed out. Missouri offensive lineman Armand Membou, whose helmet was ripped off, and Williams and fellow Arkansas defensive lineman Eric Gregory were all ejected.

What an embarrassing altercation for both sides.

Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis trolled Florida with the Chomp after hitting game-winning FG

When you beat Florida on a game-winning field goal, you do the Chomp.

Missouri pulled out the win against Florida in the game’s final moments on Saturday with a field goal from none other than kicker Harrison Mevis.

Being that the victory came against the Gators and all, Mevis knew exactly how to commemorate his game-winning kick to get the Tigers to 9-2.

Right after nailing the field goal, Mevis celebrated by doing the Gator Chomp that Florida players and fans have become accustomed to doing every Saturday in the fall.

Oh yeah, Mevis hit them with the Chomp, and it was beautiful. It’s so wonderful that words just cannot do it justice. You have to see it for yourself.

If that’s not the best taunting Chomp directed at Florida that we’ve seen in a long time, we’re not sure what is.

Mevis has become one of college football’s most entertaining kickers this season, and he continued his compelling streak with this terrific game winner and perfect ensuing celebration.

What Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz said ahead of the Georgia game

Missouri Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz had extra time to prepare for the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs (8-0) host the No. 12 Missouri Tigers (7-1) in a SEC East clash. The winner will have a much stronger chance to make the SEC championship. The loser will see its season’s course altered.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 4. The Georgia-Missouri game will be televised on CBS.

Missouri is coming off a bye week after picking up a win over South Carolina. Last week, Georgia had one of its more impressive performances of the season in a 43-20 win over Florida.

What did Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz have to say ahead of the Georgia game?

Mizzou upset No. 15 Kansas State with a 61-yard game-winning FG amid beautiful chaos

The longest field goal in SEC history!

Saturday’s Week 3 matchup between No. 15 Kansas State and Missouri ended in beautiful, absolute chaos. A perfect example of college football’s madness delivering an upset for the undefeated Tigers during a seemingly dull-on-paper schedule.

At the end of a largely back-and-forth contest, Mizzou had the ball on its own 18-yard line with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter of a game tied at 27. Picking up a few first downs, the Tigers marched up the field, looking poised to pull off the last-second upset before nearly blowing it.

Somehow, inexplicably, on second-and-10 on the Wildcats’ 39-yard line, Mizzou — with zero awareness of the play clock counting down — took a delay-of-game penalty. Seriously, what?!

Luckily for them, kicker Harrison Mevis saved the day after moving back to the 44-yard line, and the senior kicker drilled a game-winning 61-yard field goal as the clock hit zero. SIXTY-ONE YARDS.

It was the longest field goal in SEC history, as Mizzou took down a ranked nonconference opponent for the first time since 1990, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Missouri won, 30-27, and is now 3-0 for the first time since 2018.

The chaos, however, didn’t stop there.

A flag appeared to be thrown just before the ball crossed the uprights, but as soon as the record-breaking field goal was ruled good, fans stormed the field, making any hope of replaying the down next to impossible. Officials seemed to decide it wasn’t a flag but an errant flying yellow object like a t-shirt, pom-pom or something else, leaving the Tigers to celebrate their victory.

5-star DL Williams Nwaneri makes commitment

5-star DL Williams Nwaneri has decided where he plans to play at the next level

Five-star defensive line recruit Williams Nwaneri has committed to the Missouri Tigers.

Williams Nwaneri committed to Missouri over Tennessee, Oregon, Georgia and Oklahoma. The five-star joins Class of 2022 wide receiver recruit Luther Burden as recent in-state five-star recruits to commit to the Tigers over other elite college football programs.

The talented defensive lineman is a big addition to Missouri’s class of 2024. The Tigers held the nation’s No. 60 recruiting class before Nwaneri’s commitment. Nwaneri is a much-needed recruiting win for the Tigers.

Nwaneri plays football for Lee’s Summit North High School, which is located in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive lineman is the top-ranked player at his position in the class of 2024. Nwaneri is the top-rated player in the state of Missouri and the No. 3 recruit in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.

Williams Nwaneri is a disruptive pass rusher. He can play on the edge or along the interior. Nwaneri is explosive and shows good pursuit and effort. The Lee’s Summit standout makes an impact on special teams, where he blocked several kicks during the 2022 high school football season.

The Missouri commit is also a strong run defender. He frequently wins with quickness and his hands at the point of attack.
