Colts sign 9 to futures contracts among several roster moves

The Colts made 14 roster moves Monday to begin the 2024 offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts officially got their offseason underway Monday by making several roster moves, including the signings of nine players to Reserve/Future contracts, the team announced.

Along with the nine futures contracts the team signed, all of which include players from the practice squad, the Colts also signed four players to one-year contract extensions while waiving another player. So in total, the Colts made 14 moves.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 13. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. It is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 14 moves the Colts made to begin the offseason:

Colts make slew of roster moves

The Colts made a slew of roster moves Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts made several roster moves both to the active roster and practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Following the news that defensive tackle Grover Stewart will miss the next six games due to suspension, the team added a player to the active roster while making a few changes to the practice squad.

Panthers work out 2 QBs, 3 others on Tuesday

The Panthers worked out five players on Tuesday, including former Vikings third-round pick Kellen Mond.

Despite having a bit of a rest on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers were still hard at work trying to construct their roster.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team worked out five players on the day. They are as follows:

Browns bring TE Devin Asiasi, WR Shi Smith, and more in for workouts on Friday

The Browns hosted 6 for workouts yesterday.

As they do every week, the Cleveland Browns brought in six players for a workout on the heels of their Week 3 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. The headliners of this week’s batch of tryouts are tight end Devin Asiasi and wide receiver Shi Smith.

Asiasi, of course, is a former third round selection of the New England Patriots. He lasted less than two years in New England before he was released and signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. Asiasi managed to rack up just five yards on two catches in 2022 for the Browns’ little brother.

Smith is the other interesting name, as a former sixth round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft of the Carolina Panthers after an illustrious career with the South Carolina Gamecocks. Appearing in all 17 games for the Panthers a year ago, Smith racked up 296 yards and two touchdowns on 22 catches.

Here is the full list of players the Browns had in for a workout on Friday as they look to continue to find bottom of the roster and practice squad-worthy players.

Colts waive RB Zavier Scott with injury settlement

Colts UDFA Zavier Scott was waived with an injury settlement.

The Indianapolis Colts waived running back Zavier Scott with an injury settlement, the team announced Monday.

Scott, an undrafted free-agent rookie out of Maine, reportedly tore his meniscus.

Because he was waived with an injury settlement, Scott doesn’t have to go on the injured reserve list, which would force him to miss the entire season. So, he can re-sign with the team when he’s healthy enough.

Scott was an intriguing player throughout training camp considering his positional versatility between running back and wide receiver. We’ll see if he winds up back on the roster whenever he’s healthy again, but now his focus will be on getting his meniscus fixed.

7 Colts rookies to watch at training camp

Rookies will be all the rage at Colts training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are opening up their training camp on July 26 at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield.

This season they will be leaning on having major contributions from their rookie class. It’s a new era for the franchise and one that includes a new direction with a fresh face at the quarterback position along with several additions to the defensive side of the ball.

5 UDFAs with best chance to make Colts’ roster

Taking a look at which undrafted rookie free agents have the best chance to make the Colts roster.

The Indianapolis Colts had the longest active streak of having an undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookie make the 53-man roster, which lasted for 22 years in a row until it ended in 2021.

A new one has potentially started after seeing four UDFA rookies make the team last year. UDFAs face an uphill battle to make the roster because even with a great preseason performance, a general manager can still give the edge to a drafted player or someone they invested money into.

The best pathway for a UDFA to make an NFL roster is to join a position group that lacks depth. With that being considered, here are five UDFAs on Indy’s roster that have the best to be on the team for the season opener:

Taking a look at 11 winners from the Colts’ offseason workout program.

The Indianapolis Colts have roughly one month until the arrival of training camp, which is when the real competition for the final roster spots will take place.

Though we should be careful about how much information we take seriously during the spring practices, it never hurts to monitor the players who stand out in OTAs and minicamp. Jobs are not won in the spring, but the foundation for the competitions is being laid out.
