Panthers work out 2 QBs, 3 others on Tuesday

The Panthers worked out five players on Tuesday, including former Vikings third-round pick Kellen Mond.

Despite having a bit of a rest on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers were still hard at work trying to construct their roster.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team worked out five players on the day. They are as follows:

5 players tried out for Broncos on Tuesday, including 2 tight ends

The Broncos brought in five players for tryouts on Tuesday, including a pair of tight ends.

The Denver Broncos brought in five players for tryouts on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Denver hosted three wide receivers — Kevin Austin, Jalen Camp and Thyrick Pitts — and two tight ends — Noah Togiai and Jake Tonges.

The Broncos are expected to place safety Caden Sterns on season-ending injured reserve with a torn patellar tendon. Once Sterns goes on IR, Denver will have an open spot on the 53-man roster.

One candidate to be called up to the active roster is practice squad wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. If Humphrey is about to be called up to the 53-man roster, Denver might be looking at options to add another WR to the practice squad.

Meanwhile, Broncos tight end Greg Dulcich is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with a hamstring injury. That likely explains why Denver is looking for more depth options at tight end.

Patriots reportedly releasing WR Thyrick Pitts after latest signing

The Patriots have reportedly released WR Thyrick Pitts from the practice squad.

After the reported practice squad signing of rookie wide receiver T.J. Luther on Friday, the New England Patriots have reportedly released Thyrick Pitts in a corresponding move.

NFL teams are only allowed to have 16 players on their practice squad, and a move was expected at some point after news of the Luther signing.

Pitts hauled in two receptions for 26 yards in the preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans, but his work wasn’t enough for the team to keep him over Luther, who might also be able to contribute on special teams.

The Patriots releasing Pitts comes a month to the day of the team claiming him on waivers and signing him.

New England has been dealing with injuries at receiver with Tyquan Thornton currently on injured reserve and DeVante Parker missing multiple practices. They also signed former first-round draft pick Jalen Reagor to their practice squad on Thursday night.

Regardless of the severity of the ongoing injury bug, the Patriots are clearly making an effort to keep their reserves as strong as possible at receiver.

Patriots announce 2023 rookie jersey numbers ahead of preseason opener

The jersey numbers for the Patriots’ 2023 rookies have been revealed.

The New England Patriots’ 2023 NFL draft class and undrafted free agents are ditching their temporarily assigned numbers for their actual game numbers.

On Thursday, the Patriots announced all of the new numbers ahead of their preseason opener against the Houston Texans.

With rosters being at 90 players at this stage, a lot of these numbers could change as rosters are finalized and numbers shift. It is also important to note that there are some players currently wearing the same number as another player on the roster. That is permitted in training camp, as long as the players aren’t not on the same side of the ball.

Let’s take a look at what numbers the rookies have decided to go with for the next few weeks of training camp.

Patriots claim recently released Bears receiver on waivers

The Patriots claimed a receiver on waivers Tuesday.

It didn’t take the New England Patriots long to make a move after placing former receiver Jalen Hurd on the reserve/retirement list on Tuesday.

In a corresponding move, the Patriots announced they had claimed former Chicago Bears wideout Thyrick Pitts on waivers.

Pitts, a former collegiate standout at the University of Delaware, signed with the Bears as an undrafted rookie free agent back in May. He was released by the team on Monday and fell to the Patriots on waivers.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, Pitts clearly has physical gifts that could benefit him on the field. But the Patriots’ receiving corps is deep, even without a true No. 1 wideout, and he’s going to have to work hard to carve out a spot.

He closed out his collegiate career with 172 total receptions for 2,429 yards and 23 touchdowns. His yards per reception average was 14.1 overall, which means he’s capable of pushing things beyond the sticks.

Of course, he’s yet to prove he can do it at the NFL level, and he’ll be practicing against a Patriots defense that would be a headache for any offense to go against.

It shouldn’t take long to find out where he stands on the Patriots’ roster.
