7 quarterbacks Jaguars could sign after Patriots claimed Nathan Rourke

The Jaguars are suddenly in need of a quarterback with Trevor Lawrence in concussion protocol and Nathan Rourke claimed by the Patriots.

Update: The Jaguars signed E.J. Perry to their practice squad Tuesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in sudden need of a quarterback.

For most of the year, the team has carried two quarterbacks on the active roster, Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard, as well as former CFL star Nathan Rourke on the practice squad.

Now the team temporarily has only one passer after Lawrence landed in the concussion protocol and Rourke was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots.

Rourke, 25, was signed to the active roster in October when Lawrence was questionable for a Week 7 game due to a knee injury. The Jaguars then waived Rourke and added him back to the practice squad after the game.

Jacksonville tried to do the same when an ankle sprain had Lawrence questionable for a Week 14 game. But the Patriots scooped up Rourke before he could get back to the Jaguars’ practice squad.

If Lawrence can’t play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there’s no doubt that Beathard will be the team’s starter. But there’s also no question that the Jaguars need to add another player at the position.

Here are seven quarterbacks on the market who could be considered by the Jaguars:

Panthers work out 2 QBs, 3 others on Tuesday

The Panthers worked out five players on Tuesday, including former Vikings third-round pick Kellen Mond.

Despite having a bit of a rest on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers were still hard at work trying to construct their roster.

As reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team worked out five players on the day. They are as follows:

Report: Panthers work out QB Bryce Perkins on Tuesday

According to Pro Football Talk, the Panthers worked out former Los Angeles Rams QB Bryce Perkins on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers may soon have another Bryce in their quarterback room.

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the team worked out former Los Angeles Rams passer Bryce Perkins on Tuesday.

Perkins, a Queen Creek, Ariz. native, split his collegiate career between three programs—at Arizona State University, Arizona Western College and the  University of Virginia. Over his final two college campaigns—both as a Cavalier—he completed 545 of his 845 attempts (64.5 percent) for 6,218 yards, 47 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

That body of work in Charlottesville would help Perkins earn a few honors—including a Second-team All-ACC nod in 2019 and the Dudley Award, given to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s top NCAA player, in both seasons.

The 6-foot-3, 214-pounder then broke into the pros as an undrafted free agent with the Rams in 2020. He spent three years in Los Angeles, getting his first and only start in Week 12 of the 2022 campaign. He passed for 100 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

As of now, the Week 4status of starter Bryce Young, who is dealing with an ankle injury, remains unclear. The Panthers are also currently rostering backup Andy Dalton, who started in Sunday’s defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, and Jake Luton.

Giants host five veterans on tryout basis at rookie minicamp

The New York Giants invited five veterans to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, including the brother of ex-Giant Paul Parkins.

The New York Giants are conducting rookie minicamp this weekend at their practice facility in East Rutherford. There are five veterans in the mix of draftees, UDFAs, invitees, and walk-ons.

Quarterback Bryce Perkins, a former Virginia star who spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent the first two seasons on the bench and did not take a snap until last year when he played in five games, making one start. He is the brother of former Giants running back Paul Perkins.

Cornerbacks Nigel Warrior and Iman Marshall are also in camp. They both have ties to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Warrior is the son of former All-Pro cornerback Dale Carter. He did not play in 2022 but has spent time with Baltimore and Seattle over the two previous seasons.

Marshall was a fourth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2019. He most recently played with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL in 2022.

Outside linebackers Jonathan Kongbo and Darryl Johnson have been brought in for a tryout as well. Kongbo has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

Johnson was a former seven-round pick out of North Carolina A&T by the Buffalo Bills in 2019. He played two seasons in Buffalo before landing in Carolina and Seattle.

Rams won’t tender Bryce Perkins, still open to bringing him back

The Rams aren’t tendering Bryce Perkins, who’s a restricted free agent, but they are interested in bringing him back

The Los Angeles Rams have shown they value Bryce Perkins since signing him as an undrafted free agent, keeping him on the 53-man roster the last two seasons. He’s now a restricted free agent and though the Rams could easily keep him on the roster for $2.6 million, they’re choosing not to do so.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Rams won’t tender Perkins as a restricted free agent, but they are open to bringing him back at a lower price than the $2.6 million figure.

Perkins was the Rams’ No. 3 quarterback last season and was active for five games, making one start. He completed 19 of 34 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Perkins is a terrific athlete at quarterback, which we’ve seen countless times in the preseason. He still needs work as a passer, but Sean McVay is clearly confident that he can develop into a backup.

It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if the Rams and Perkins end up with a new contract for him to return in 2023.

No team has started more QBs or O-line combinations this year than the Rams

It’s been a revolving door at two of the most important positions for the Rams this season

When building an NFL team, the first two positions to solidify are quarterback and the offensive line. If you can protect an above-average quarterback, you’ll most likely succeed.

This season has been just the opposite for the Rams. Not only have they been unable to protect their quarterback(s), but they haven’t gotten very good play out of their passers, either.

Need evidence? They have the eighth-fewest passing yards and are tied with the Broncos for the most sacks allowed (51) this season.

The Rams have an excuse, though. They’ve started 12 different offensive line combinations this season, which is the most ever through a team’s first 12 games. In fact, they set the record when they started 11 different combos in the first 11 weeks.

Additionally, no team this season has started more quarterbacks (4) than the Rams: Matthew Stafford, John Wolford, Bryce Perkins and Baker Mayfield. Eight other teams will have started three different quarterbacks by the time Week 16 concludes, but none can match the Rams’ four.

That seems like a pretty big factor in their painfully disappointing 2022 season, one year after starting the same quarterback and only four different offensive line groups in their 17 regular-season games.

There are a lot of reasons the Rams have struggled this season, but the quarterback and offensive line play is the biggest one.

6 takeaways from Rams’ 27-23 loss to the Seahawks

Here are our immediate takeaways from the Rams’ heartbreaking loss to the Seahawks in Week 13

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”MPLFdm8Asz-2403023-7498″]

The Los Angeles Rams were unable to put an end to their losing streak in Week 13 versus the Seattle Seahawks. The Rams suffered a 27-23 loss to the Seahawks, dropping their sixth straight game.

The reigning Super Bowl champions are now 3-9 this season and Sean McVay is running out of solutions for all of the injuries on the roster. Los Angeles shouldn’t use injuries as an excuse for Sunday’s loss to Seattle, though, as the Rams had a shot to win with the defense needing a stop late in the game.

Following another heartbreaking loss for the Rams, here are six immediate takeaways from the divisional showdown versus the Seahawks.

John Wolford to start at QB for Rams in Week 13 vs. Seahawks

Sean McVay revealed that John Wolford, not Bryce Perkins, will start against the Seahawks on Sunday

The Los Angeles Rams are set to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13 and they’ll be starting their third different quarterback in the last three games. With Matthew Stafford officially ruled out for Sunday’s contest, Sean McVay shared that John Wolford, not Bryce Perkins, will start against the Seahawks.

McVay revealed that Stafford has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol, but he won’t be active in Week 13. While the expectation was for Stafford not to play all along, McVay was noncommital on naming a starting quarterback earlier in the week.

But after Perkins drew his first career start in Week 12 versus the Kansas City Chiefs, the Rams are going to Wolford after he’s recovered from a neck injury he’s dealt with in recent weeks. Perkins completed 13 of his 23 attempts for 100 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while he also led the team with 44 rushing yards against the Chiefs.

Meanwhile, Wolford will be making his third career start on Sunday and his second start of the season. Even though Wolford will be starting against the Seahawks, Perkins will likely still have a role in the offense, so fans should expect both of them to be involved in Week 13.

Sean McVay noncommittal on starting QB if Matthew Stafford is out

Sean McVay is noncommittal on naming a starting QB between John Wolford and Bryce Perkins if Matthew Stafford is out again in Week 13

Matthew Stafford remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol and there’s a chance he misses a second straight game for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 13 versus the Seattle Seahawks. With Stafford’s status for Sunday’s game up in the air, Sean McVay spoke about who could start at quarterback for the Rams in Week 13 between John Wolford and Bryce Perkins.

“I think we’re going to work through that. It might be a combination of both,” McVay said. “I think a lot of it entails, alright, let’s look at their body of work and then let’s take a look at Seattle and how we best feel is going to be the things that we want to try to be able to activate. I wouldn’t say either or right now. I think both of those guys are potential candidates to play if not use both.”

Considering that this is the second time Stafford has entered the league’s concussion protocol this season, the Rams should take a cautious approach with the veteran signal-caller. Besides Stafford, Wolford has been dealing with a neck injury in recent weeks, though he was active in Week 12 while Perkins got the start at quarterback against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his first career start, Perkins completed 13 of his 23 attempts for 100 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions versus the Chiefs. The 25-year-old quarterback also rushed for 44 yards on nine attempts, adding an element to an anemic running game for the Rams.

Back in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, McVay deployed a mixture of Wolford and Perkins sans Stafford, with Perkins mostly just running the ball. While Perkins seemingly earned another start, McVay may elect to use both quarterbacks in Week 13 instead of naming an official starter if Stafford remains out.

If Matthew Stafford remains out, Bryce Perkins should stay Rams’ starter

Bryce Perkins wasn’t perfect on Sunday, but he didn’t do anything to lose the starting job if Matthew Stafford remains sidelined

Bryce Perkins made his first career start in the NFL on Sunday, taking the place of the injured Matthew Stafford. John Wolford was active and could’ve played, but the Rams rolled with Perkins as their starter.

Whether that was because Wolford struggled in his start in Week 10 or because he was limited in practice last week, the Rams made the right call by starting Perkins over Wolford. And moving forward, if Stafford remains out with a neck injury and possible concussion, the Rams should keep rolling with Perkins.

That might be hard to understand when you see his stat line of 100 yards passing, one touchdown and two interceptions, but Perkins played better against the Chiefs than Wolford did against the Cardinals. That’s partly because he used his mobility to move the chains and bail the offensive line out of poor protection.

Perkins carried it nine times for 44 yards, some on designed runs and some on scrambles when the play broke down. Of his nine carries, three of them picked up first downs. In a game when the Rams only had 13 total first downs, that’s not bad.

There are areas where he must improve, which he admitted after the game. The pre-snap procedure has to be better, whether it’s getting the play off in time or reading the coverage properly.

And his first interception was a poor decision made worse by a bad throw, attempting to hit Van Jefferson late to the left side after he was already covered.

But even with the mistakes Perkins made, he seems to have more upside than Wolford. That’s one of the primary reasons the Rams should keep him as their starter if Stafford can’t return. They know what they have in Wolford. He’s played before and played poorly against the Cardinals. With Perkins, there’s probably a lower floor, but he also has a higher ceiling than Wolford if the offense is designed around him.

If Stafford is ruled out again this week, it’ll be interesting to see who gets the bulk of the first-team reps in practice. Perkins did last week because of Wolford’s neck injury, but hopefully that won’t change this week as the Rams prepare for the Seahawks.
