Chiefs OL Trey Smith explains offense’s approach in late game situations: ‘It requires elite focus’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith explains offense’s approach in late game situations: ‘It requires elite focus’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs were able to hang on and defeat the Carolina Panthers in Week 12, but not without another memorable drive led by Patrick Mahomes. Starting offensive guard Trey Smith spoke with reporters on Monday via Zoom about the offense’s mindset during those late game-winning moments.

“I just think the approach is pretty much the same. Just trying to be as
focused and (as) locked in at the moment, understanding what you need to do at your job and what’s required for your job in that situation. I think it requires elite focus to understand the task at hand.” said Smith. “You have a great operator in Patrick Mahomes who’s going to coordinate everyone and get everything finely tuned the way (that) we need it to be. At the end of the day, if we all can just focus on our single role, you know, playing together – football’s the ultimate team sport. If we all focus on our singular goal and objective, then we’ll be able to accomplish our goals and be successful.”

Smith praised Mahomes’ leadership in these moments. His 34-yard scramble on Sunday almost single-handedly set up Spencer Shrader’s game-winning field goal attempt. The offense continues to find ways to win games regardless of the lack of productivity compared to past seasons.

Chiefs OL Trey Smith describes playing in Buffalo: ‘It’s crazy out there’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith describes playing in Buffalo surrounded by #Bills Mafia: ‘It’s crazy out there’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round last postseason on their way to Super Bowl LVIII. The Buffalo victory surprised many critics but firmly eliminated the notion that they couldn’t win away from Arrowhead Stadium.

Starting offensive right guard, Trey Smith spoke to reporters on Thursday about the atmosphere in Buffalo during their last matchup in January.

“Yeah, Buffalo, the fans definitely brought it. It’s a great environment. I have a lot of respect for that team and that organization, and you can sense their fans’ passion. I mean, I remember pulling up on the bus, throwing snowballs and stuff at us, jumping on the tables. It’s crazy out there.” said Smith. “It’s a great fan base. It’s going to be a good challenge. Like I said, have a great game day environment and some great fans.”

Smith and the Chiefs greatly respect the Bills and understand the importance of this Sunday’s game. Before their postseason matchup, the two teams met during the regular season in Kansas City, with the Bills prevailing following the infamous offensive offsides call on Kadarius Toney in the fourth quarter.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid comments on the offensive line’s progress: ‘They’re good players’

Kansas City #Chiefs head coach Andy Reid comments on the offensive line’s progress: ‘They’re good players’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed his offensive line during Wednesday’s press conference, focusing on the game packages featuring extra offensive tackles recently required to be eligible as receivers.

“So, our called player was 64 (Wanya Morris), so we could sub Kingsley (Suamataia) out. When we put Mike (Caliendo) in, and Mike could come in – you have to sub the guy out – the called player,” said Reid. “So, to do what we were trying to do, you had to make that move, but I mean, it shows you the trust that we have in Kingsley, too, because we came in and threw the ball. It didn’t matter what the play was. We have two good young guys. They’re getting better as we go.”

Reid has rarely had an issue regarding his highly praised interior offensive line, as each player is dominant in their roles with All-Pro accolades.

“Well, they’re (Trey Smith, Creed Humphrey, and Joe Thuney) all best buddies; they’re always together. They’re good players, and they work at it. They’ve played together long enough where they kind of know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and cover up the weakness with each other’s strengths.” said Reid. “Again, these challenges that we had – and this week won’t be any different. Their (Denver Broncos) inside guys are great, so it’ll be another big challenge for those inside three to execute. Just like last week was, that was a big challenge. They’re good friends, they spend a lot of time together, they study, they’re smart guys.”

The offensive line’s play has dramatically benefited the running game, as Kansas City remains one of the league’s better-rushing teams. The rotation of running backs due to injury hasn’t affected the on-field production, with Kareem Hunt quickly emerging as a standout in the group this season.

Chiefs C Creed Humphrey praises four-year teammate: ‘The most physical lineman in the league’

Kansas City #Chiefs center Creed Humphrey praises right guard Trey Smith: ‘The most physical lineman in the league’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ interior offensive line has earned respect around the league for their efficiency and dominance in the trenches. Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey spoke highly of another unit member, right guard Trey Smith, during Thursday’s press conference.

“He’s (Trey Smith) probably the most physical lineman in the league. He loves getting after guys, putting guys on the ground, getting after him,” said Humphrey. “So just, the physicality that it brings, and also, the mental prep that he does throughout the week to be able to see things before it’s happening, pre-snap, post-snap, what’s happening, all those things, he does a great job with it. He understands schemes and concepts well and what we’re trying to do against what the defense has given us.”

Smith remains one of the highest-rated guards in the league but has yet to make a Pro Bowl team. He brings a unique energy to the offensive line unit, leaving a physical impression on opponents and inspiring teammates.

“Yeah, it fires us up and makes everybody else play with that much more of an edge. When you see it in the film, you see your guy doing that. It’s kind of infectious.” said Humphrey. “It makes you want to do it too, and it kind of turns into a competition so you can do it the most on the field. Trey (Smith) usually wins, but it turns into a competition, and he just does a great job; he brings so much energy to the room and gets guys fired up, so it’s a lot of fun to play with him.”

The 2021 sixth-round draft pick has plenty of footage of lifting defenders while blocking, which has added to his popularity around the league.

Chiefs OL dominates Pro Football Focus’ ‘Midseason All-Pro’ team

Three #Chiefs offensive linemen were named to Pro Football Focus’ ‘Midseason All-Pro’ team this week.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the hottest team in football and seem poised to complete the NFL’s first-ever Super Bowl three-peat after getting off to a 7-0 start in the regular season.

Through eight weeks, it seems the only thing holding the undefeated Chiefs back is its offense, which has gotten off to a relatively slow start to its 2024 campaign.

Despite the unit’s deficiencies, the experts at Pro Football Focus seem pleased with what they’ve seen from Andy Reid’s offensive lineman in Kansas City’s first seven games.

This week, PFF named three Chiefs linemen — Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith — to its ‘Midseason All-Pro’ team:

Though this achievement isn’t necessarily an indication that these players will be contenders for the Associated Press All-Pro team at the end of the season, it is certainly a breath of fresh air amid the Chiefs’ offensive struggles.

Stay tuned to see if Thuney, Humphrey, and Smith can keep up their outstanding efforts to earn official All-Pro honors in January.

Chiefs scouting report: Purdue Boilermakers OT Marcus Mbow

The Kansas City #Chiefs should consider selecting Purdue #Boilermakers offensive tackle Marcus Mbow in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs found a gem when they selected Trey Smith in the sixth round in 2021. Smith is one of the league’s best run-blocking guards, but he will enter free agency in 2025. His next contract’s average annual salary could price him out of Kansas City’s range and send the Chiefs back to the draft.

Purdue offensive lineman Marcus Mbow plays right tackle for the Boilermakers but projects best as a guard at the next level because he lacks the length and weight of a traditional offensive tackle. He suffered a significant season-ending leg injury in 2023 but is performing at a high level this year.

Mbow is an explosive athlete who quickly gets out of the blocks at the snap. His range in pass protection allows him to drive rushers up and around the pocket. Mbow possesses a surprisingly sturdy anchor for his build. He wears down power rushers gradually until the defender’s leg drive stalls.

Mbow posted elite tape against Oregon earlier this season. He attacked the Ducks with his polished, combative hands. Few offensive linemen in the 2025 class use as many counters and snatch-traps as Mbow. Even Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon ended up on the turf when facing Mbow.

Mbow’s movement skills and ferocity translate to the run game. He is one of the quickest linemen in space in the past few draft cycles. Mbow hunts down linebackers and introduces them to his mauler mentality.  He plays through the whistle with elite effort.

The Boilermakers play their next game at home against Northwestern on November 2 at 11 a.m CST. Wildcats star pass rusher Anto Saka is a notorious big game hunter who embarrassed eventual 2024 NFL draft picks Graham Barton and Caedan Wallace last season. The matchup between Mbow and Saka will be must-see TV.

Chiefs vs. Raiders: RB Kareem Hunt follows OL Trey Smith for touchdown

Check out this video of #Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt scoring a touchdown against the #Raiders in Week 8.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt wasted no time making his presence felt against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8, scoring a touchdown on the defending Super Bowl champions’ first offensive drive.

Since his arrival in Kansas City, Hunt has been one of the Chiefs’ most dynamic weapons, seemingly scoring at will. The opening minutes of Sunday’s matchup against the Raiders were no different.

After Las Vegas won the coin toss to start the game and elected to defer, Kansas City drove down the field with ease.

Newly-acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins recorded his first catch as a Chief, but the best highlight of Kansas City’s first drive was Hunt’s impressive touchdown run behind offensive lineman Trey Smith.

Take a look at this video of Hunt’s latest score, which was posted by the Chiefs’ official Twitter account:

Expect Hunt to continue leading Kansas City’s running game as the Chiefs look to earn their seventh win of the regular season against Las Vegas.

Chiefs OL Trey Smith talks about team culture under Andy Reid: ‘They let us be ourselves’

Kansas City #Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith talks about team culture under Andy Reid: ‘They let us be ourselves’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated to start the season and have found various ways to win. Each player spent their bye week in different ways to stay motivated for the stretch run.

Chiefs right guard Trey Smith recently appeared on the Everything Orange podcast to discuss the franchise’s culture under head coach Andy Reid.

“Our team culture is so unique, Coach Reid; every time we break it down Saturday before our games in the hotel, he always says, ‘Hey, don’t forget, let your personalities show.’ They let us be ourselves in that building.” said Smith. “I think that’s so important. We’re having fun out there. Obviously, we’re grown men who are trying to get a job done. But at the end of the day, we know we’re having fun beating up people. We’re going to have fun doing it every single time. It’s really special.”

Since Reid took over as head coach, the Chiefs have maintained a winning mindset rooted in preparation. Smith remains an essential part of the offensive line, earning a reputation for being part of the best interior group in the league.

Trey Smith addresses media after Chiefs’ Week 7 win vs. 49ers

Check out what #Chiefs OL Trey Smith had to say to NFL reporter Darren Smith after Kansas City’s Week 7 win over the San Francisco #49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith is a versatile offensive lineman with a critical role in Andy Ried’s offensive scheme.

He played a critical role in helping the Chiefs’ running backs in Kansas City’s Week 7 win over the San Francisco 49ers and is among the team’s most indispensable offensive talents.

After Sunday’s victory over San Fransisco Trey Smith spoke to veteran NFL reporter Darren Smith in the Chiefs’ locker room to share his thoughts on Kansas City’s latest win.

Check out the full video of the lineman’s comments, which was posted to Twitter by Darren Smith on Sunday evening:

Though Smith doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves as an offensive lineman, his efforts will prove to be crucial for the Chiefs’ hopes of winning a third consecutive Super Bowl title after injuries have decimated Kansas City’s depth at the wide receiver positon.

5 Chiefs players to watch in Week 4 vs. Chargers

The Chiefs and Chargers are set to face off in Week 4. The defending Super Bowl champs have several players that you have to keep an eye on.

In order to avoid falling to .500 a month into the season, the Chargers will have the mighty task of trying to bring down the Chiefs. It’s the second division matchup of the year for Jim Harbaugh’s side.

If they want to bounce back after their loss to the Steelers last weekend, they will need to return to dominating in the trenches.

Here are five Chiefs players to keep an eye on for this upcoming weekend:

WR Xavier Worthy

It’ll be the first time that the Chargers get a look at the rookie wideout. Worthy is someone that Chargers DC Jesse Minter will have to keep an eye on at all times. Back in April, he ran a 4.21 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Through three career games, he’s got 11 total touches for 120 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown.

TE Travis Kelce

This is an obvious one, but it’s perhaps for different reasons this time around. Over the years, he’s established himself as the best tight end year in and year out. This year though, he’s looked a step slower through three weeks. The veteran has caught eight of the 12 targets thrown his way for a total of just 69 yards. It’ll be interesting to see if his struggles continue or if we truly have already seen the best of Kelce.

OG Trey Smith

Smith continues to be one of the best value picks at the NFL Draft in recent years. The Chiefs took him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he’s evolved into one of the best guards in football. That’s been no different this season, as he’s been dominant in the first three weeks. The interior part of the Chiefs offensive line may give the Chargers fits, which could be a major difference in the game.

LB Nick Bolton

Bolton has become a vital part of Steve Spagnuolo’s evolving defense in Kansas City. Through three weeks, he’s played 92% of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps. In a game in which the Chargers will try to get their running game back on track, Bolton will be a huge player to watch in this one.

CB Trent McDuffie

With L’Jarius Sneed gone, McDuffie has been asked to do more this season. So far, he’s passed with flying colors. Through three games, he has allowed just five receptions. The Chargers don’t exactly have a clear No. 1 wide receiver, so McDuffie will guard several different guys on Sunday.
