REPORT: Pair of Alabama defenders expected to forgo NFL, return to college

This would be MASSIVE for the Alabama defense

After a flurry of players decided to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday, it is also being reported that [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are expected to return a pair of defensive players who could have opted for the NFL draft.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported on Wednesday evening that star linebacker Deontae Lawson and defensive lineman Tim Smith are likely to return for the 2024 season instead of entering the NFL draft.

Even after missing three games with injuries, Lawson was Alabama’s second-leading tackler on the season with 67. Smith is a valuable piece along the defensive line for Alabama and wracked up 31 tackles and two sacks as a rotational player up front for the Tide.

10 Alabama players who face tough NFL draft decisions

These Alabama football stars will face tough decisions at the conclusion of the Crimson Tide’s season

Alabama’s 2023 season is not yet complete but that doesn’t mean it is too early to be looking ahead to the 2024 NFL draft. After all, nobody has funneled more players into the NFL than [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] during his tenure with the Crimson Tide.

Each year it seems like Coach Saban and Alabama have several players who have tough decisions to mull over in terms of staying in school or entering the NFL draft early and this year will not be any different.

There are still a lot of variables at play relative to some pending decisions with none more prevalent than the Crimson Tide’s potential College Football Playoff run that could help catapult certain Alabama stars into a higher NFL draft projection.

Here are 10 Alabama players who currently face tough NFL draft decisions following the conclusion of the season.

Michigan football booster denies involvement in Connor Stalions’ operation

This story gets crazier and crazier. #GoBlue

Friday saw new twists and turns in the Connor Stalions and Michigan football saga, as beloved linebackers coach Chris Partridge was dismissed from his post and a mysterious ‘Uncle T’ emerged.

Both The Athletic and Yahoo identified booster Tim Smith as ‘Uncle T,’ who was alleged to have at least partially bankrolled Stalions’ operation, however, in conversations with both, he vehemently denied that.

Yahoo:

“I can give you good news,” Smith said during a 30-minute phone call with Yahoo Sports. “I don’t recognize being known as ‘Uncle T’ and I will refute that myself. I never funded Connor. To say I knew him is perhaps overstating it. I said hi to him. I’ve spoken to him more since he left Michigan to make sure the young man is OK.”

Smith is being targeted, along with Stalions, as a “fall guy” in the NCAA’s probe into the school, Smith said. Both of them are being “thrown under the bus,” he said. On Friday morning, for instance, officials from the school’s name, image and likeness collective, Champions Circle, dismissed Smith as a member, he tells Yahoo Sports.

Smith later continued, noting that Stalions sold his house (presumably in California) which yielded a profit. That allowed him to bankroll his own operation, in conjunction with renting out rooms in his Michigan home via AirBnB (as reported in an earlier dossier on Stalions).

Stalions self-funded the sign-stealing effort by selling a home for more than $100,000, Smith said Stalions told him.

The alleged scheme in which Stalions operated has been described as an elaborate, multi-year system in which he bought tickets to games involving future Michigan opponents and then had associates — as many as 65, per the NCAA’s investigation — attend games to video a team’s play-call signals.

“People don’t understand why he would do it,” Smith said. “He paid his own way. It meant a lot to him and he was trying to do whatever he could (for Michigan).”

Smith continues later by noting that he’s unsure that any rules were broken.

The Athletic reports that Smith has been in communication with Stalions after the fact, just to check on his well-being.

Smith acknowledged that he has had contact with Stalions since the scandal broke. He said he reached out to see how Stalions was faring on a “human level” but reiterated that he was not involved in the scheme in any way.

He said neither the NCAA, the Big Ten nor the University of Michigan has reached out to discuss the situation with him.

A Michigan graduate, Smith was on the board of the NIL collective ‘Champions Circle,’ but he has since been ousted from the board.

Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 50 days

We are just 50 days away from the start of Alabama’s 2023 football season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 50 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

Today, with 50 days remaining, we will take a look at junior defensive lineman, Tim Smith.

Smith has been a rotational player along the defensive line during his first three seasons in Tuscaloosa. Smith has accumulated 59 total tackles including 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks while appearing in 32 games.

Projecting Alabama’s defensive line rotation with the departure of Jamil Burroughs

Projecting Alabama’s defensive line rotation with the departure of Jamil Burroughs

It was reported on Friday that senior defensive lineman, Jamil Burroughs had entered the NCAA transfer portal. Burroughs appeared in 20 games for the Crimson Tide over three seasons and accumulated 15 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Burroughs was expected to be a key piece along the Alabama defensive line in 2023. Now, Nick Saban and position coach Freddie Roach will have to look a little further down the depth chart to fill in the hole left by Burroughs.

While depth is certainly not an issue for Alabama, especially along the defensive line, it won’t be easy to replace the experience that Burroughs would have brought to the lineup.

With Burroughs out of the picture, let’s try and project what the rotation up front might look like for the Crimson Tide this fall.

Alabama Football: 3 veteran defenders who could breakout in 2023

These three veteran defenders could be in store for a breakout season in 2023!

Despite being more than two months away from the start of the 2023 college football season, it truly feels like it is just around the corner. Before you know it, Nick Saban and the Alabama football team will be taking the field inside Bryant-Denny Stadium to play the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders on Sept. 2.

As we await the start of the season, it’s time to take a look at some of the players who could make an impact for the Crimson Tide this fall. Today, we will look at three veteran defenders who have yet to be super impactful but could be in store for a breakout season in 2023.

Let’s roll!

Five defensive veterans who need a big season in 2023

Five defensive veterans that need to step up in the 2023 college football season for Alabama!

We are just a little more than 100 days away from Nick Saban and the Alabama football team kicking the 2023 season off on Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee State inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Even though the offseason can seem long and insufferable, is there really ever an offseason with all the outlets that produce non-stop content on the Crimson Tide? That’s why you can count on Roll Tide Wire to be there every step of the way.

We have already looked at five second-year offensive and defensive players who could impact the 2023 season. Now let’s turn our attention to the veteran players who need to step up this fall for the Tide. We took a look at some veteran offensive players earlier this week, so let’s focus on the defense now!

Post-spring depth chart projections for Alabama’s defensive line

Projecting Alabama’s defensive line depth chart post-spring!

Now that spring football has officially wrapped up and the 2023 NFL draft is complete, it is time to shift our focus to the offseason.

Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide have a ton of questions marks exiting spring and fans are chomping at the bit for answers.

So as we dive into the dog days of summer, I thought we could take a look, position by position, and project the possible depth chart for the 2023 Alabama football team post-spring.

We have already taken a look at the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, and the offensive line. Now that we have completed the offensive side, let’s shift our focus to the defensive side of the ball and look at the defensive line.

Position Breakdown: Alabama’s DL ahead of spring practice

A deep dive into the Alabama defensive line room as spring football approaches.

We are now just a few weeks out from [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama football team taking the practice field to begin spring ball.

As is the case each offseason, there are many questions that need to be answered before the Tide hit the field to start the 2023 season.

As spring practice creeps closer, we are going to break down each position group on both sides of the ball. We have already looked at the quarterback room and today we will turn our attention to the defensive side of the ball and look at the interior of the Alabama defensive line.

The defensive line is losing some key pieces from the 2022 season and the competition for playing time will be fierce.

Let’s dive right in!

Projecting Alabama’s depth along the defensive line entering the 2022 season

Despite not having a proven star, Alabama has plenty of depth along the defensive line entering the 2022 season.

Football is back, Tide fans! Alabama will kick the 2022 football season off in one week and the anticipation continues to mount.

As is the case in most seasons, questions regarding the starting lineup for week one are dominating message boards and Twitter threads. Well, with the season just around the corner, I thought I would start dropping my educated projections of who you might see take the first snaps at each position group.

Some groups are obvious such as quarterback and linebacker, but nevertheless, we will take a look at each group and give a little insight into who you might see take the field against Utah State on Sept. 3.

Today we are going to take a look at a group that has plenty of depth but maybe lacks a bit of star power at the moment: the defensive line.

This list will be a touch different because I believe you are going to see several different packages on the defensive line for Alabama, so I will simply list all of the players who I project to have significant playing time.

Let’s roll!
