Joe Hortiz reflects on first draft as Chargers general manager: ‘I really believe we made our team better’

Joe Hortiz completed his first draft as Chargers general manager and it’s safe to say it was a major success.

Joe Hortiz completed his first draft as the Chargers general manager and it’s safe to say it was a major success.

Los Angeles stuck with their No. 5 first overall pick and snagged the best offensive tackle in Notre Dame’s Joe Alt. Additionally, the team added two players, Ladd McConkey and Junior Colson, on Day 2. On Day 3, six more players were selected, adding depth for now and the roster’s future.

“The opportunity to take the players we took, each time we were just excited to take every one of them,” Hortiz added. “I really believe we made our team better.”

According to Hortiz, the third day of the draft was arguably the most crucial, adding that championship teams are expected to elevate their rosters in rounds four through seven.

“That’s where the scouts and coaches really do their work,” Hortiz said. “Everyone has their mock drafts on the first and second and third rounds. And honestly, you could pick 36 or 37 players on Day 1 and you’ll get 32 of them right.

“But Day 3 is when the information is not as readily available and that’s where you trust your scouts,” Hortiz added. “Our scouts did a great job knowing the players and identifying the ones that can help us.”

The draft class included nine players at six different position groups.

“These players fit the Chargers profile, and we really believe all nine of these guys do,” Hortiz said. “You want high-character players, you want highly competitive players, passionate players, intelligent, durable, tough. Guys that care about each other. And I can really say that about every one of them.

“We had the blue star that we brought with us here … we drafted three of them, “Hortiz continued. “We don’t got a bunch of them, each scout gets one. They put it on a guy and we were able to take three of them.

“Frankly, all nine of these players can be blue star-type players, but we’re limited in the number we can give out so you pick one, put it on,” Hortiz added. “That’s a real positive thing for us.”

Following the draft, the Chargers’ roster is in much better standing. They addressed the positions of need that we highlighted ahead of the event with players who mostly ranked higher or aligned with the consensus big board.

2024 NFL draft: Watch highlights of new Chargers DT Justin Eboigbe

To get familiar with the newest member of the Chargers, here are some highlights of Justin Eboigbe.

The Chargers addressed the interior part of the defensive line with the selection of Justin Eboigbe.

Los Angeles signed Poona Ford in free agency, but the positional room still needed additional depth. And they fulfilled that by picking up one of the best run-defending defensive tackles.

To get familiar with the newest member of the Bolts, here are some highlights of Eboigbe.

Former Alabama DL Justin Eboigbe selected by Los Angeles Chargers in fourth round of 2024 NFL draft

With the No. 105 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the Los Angeles Chargers selected former Alabama defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe will be headed out West as he was drafted with the No. 105 overall pick by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Eboigbe battled adversity over the course of his college career. As a senior, Eboigbe suffered a season-ending neck injury. As a redshirt-senior, Eboigbe returned from injury and contributed in a big way to Alabama’s success along the interior of the defensive line.

In 2023, Eboigbe recorded a career-high 63 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. He was a force for the Crimson Tide last season. As a result of his play on the field, Eboigbe was named to the All-SEC First-Team by coaches from within the conference.

Eboigbe will join former Alabama punter J.K. Scott in Los Angeles. It will be interesting to see what type of role Eboigbe carves out for himself with the Chargers.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Eboigbe as he begins his professional career in the 2024 NFL season.

Instant analysis of Chargers selecting DL Justin Eboigbe

Analyzing the Chargers’ selection of Alabama defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe with the 105th overall selection.

Justin Eboigbe had an incredible game against Michigan in the College Football Playoff.

It turns out Jim Harbaugh took notice.

The Chargers made Eboigbe their fourth-round selection on Saturday, drafting him with the 105th overall pick. A 6-foot-4 and 297-pounder, Eboigbe played the Jonathan Allen role in Alabama’s defense in 2023, spending the bulk of his snaps at either 5 technique or 3 technique.

Eboigbe does come with some injury concerns: he missed nine games in 2022 with a herniated disk that pushed against his spinal cord and required career-threatening surgery. The same surgeon who did Justyn Ross’ neck operation did Eboigbe’s, kicking off a seven-month recovery process.

Los Angeles must be comfortable with that risk, because if Eboigbe stays healthy, he projects as the Chargers’ starter at 3 technique next to Poona Ford at nose and Morgan Fox at 5 technique. He’s a versatile lineman who defends the run (63 tackles in 2023) and pass (30 pressures) equally well.

2024 NFL draft: Chargers pick DT Justin Eboigbe with No. 105 overall selection

The Chargers beefed up the interior part of the defensive line with the selection of Justin Eboigbe.

The Chargers selected former Alabama defensive tackle Justin Eboigbe with the No. 105 overall pick.

The Chargers signed Poona Ford in free agency, but they still need more reinforcements along the interior part of the defensive line.

Eboigbe was a key contributor for the Crimson Tide before a neck injury derailed his 2022 season. He followed it up with a breakout campaign before declaring for the draft, recording 63 tackles, 11.5 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks, and a pass defended.

The 6-foot-5 and 292-pound Eboige is an interior defender who is tough and well-built with the strength to anchor at the point of attack and eat up double teams. While his strength is in run defense, this past season he showed the explosiveness and technicality to get after the quarterback.

Panthers nab starting WR in ESPN’s 7-round mock draft

ESPN’s Matt Miller left the Panthers with a solid haul in his new seven-round mock draft.

ESPN NFL draft analyst and insider Matt Miller did the Lord’s work this week, and he’s blessed the Carolina Panthers in the process.

Miller’s seven-round 2024 mock draft was released on Wednesday. To begin his spring collection for Carolina, he projects University of South Carolina wideout Xavier Legette as the 33rd overall pick:

One nugget I’ve heard from multiple NFL scouts since the Senior Bowl is that the Panthers love this wide receiver class and believe they will be able to add a rookie starter at No. 33. The Panthers sent 10 people to the South Carolina pro day, and Legette’s 4.39 speed at 6-1 and 221 pounds is perfect for slant routes — which would in turn help quarterback Bryce Young get the ball out faster in 2024.

Legette delivered a nugget himself just two weeks ago at his pro day.

“A lot of coaches came and hollered at me before and after this process here,” the Mullins, S.C. native said of the Panthers. “They say they got a buzz in their facility for me and I’m just ready to see where I’ma land.”

The big 6-foot-1, 221-pounder ended his time for the Gamecocks on a high note—reeling in 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. Legette’s efforts earned him a second-team All-SEC selection.

To round out Carolina’s haul, Miller mocked the following prospects to join Legette:

  • No. 39: OT Kingsley Suamataia (BYU)
  • No. 65: DE Chris Braswell (Alabama)
  • No. 101: RB Braelon Allen (Wisconsin)
  • No. 141: CB Jarrian Jones (Florida State)
  • No. 142: DT Justin Eboigbe (Alabama)
  • No. 240: WR Jordan Whittington (Texas)

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 75, Alabama DL Justin Eboigbe

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Alabama defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL draft.

Over the past two NFL Drafts, Brian Gutekunst has added Devonte Wyatt, Lukas Van Ness, Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks to the front seven foundation that already included Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary, Preston Smith and Tedarrell Slaton.

With those pieces in place, the Green Bay Packers have the makings of a solid defensive line group for new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

When a general manager thinks his team has enough pieces up front, it’s probably wise to go add another piece for good measure.

If the Packers are looking to add another piece in the middle of their defensive line, a player they could target is Justin Eboigbe. The Alabama defensive lineman checks in at No. 75 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

A four-star recruit out of Georgia, Eboigbe started two games during his freshman campaign and recorded three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Over the next two seasons, Eboigbe was part of a rotation up front for Nick Saban’s defense and recorded one tackle for loss and a .5 sack.

During the 2022 season, Eboigbe played in four games before suffering a season-ending neck injury. The former four-star recruit enjoyed a career year this past season, recording 64 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

“Justin has, rather quietly, been a big leader and spark producer for Alabama’s defense,” Brent Taylor, the editor for Roll Bama Roll, said. “He looked to be that kind of player at the start of 2022, but a neck injury made him miss almost the whole season. Alabama’s run defense, particularly off-tackle, clearly suffered. We weren’t sure he’d even play again after the neck injury, so it was a pleasant surprise when he got cleared to play his senior season. He’s been a stabilizing veteran on the interior in run defense and has been an exceptional complementary piece of the pass rush, often closing out the sacks after pressure from the edges.”

At 6-4 and 292 pounds, Eboigbe looks great off the bus. This past season Ebogibe recorded a career-high 64 tackles and according to Pro Football Focus, he accounted for 31 stops. He doesn’t miss a tackle if he gets his hands on a ball carrier. He has an innate ability to work his way up and down the line of scrimmage to find the ball carrier before they get a head of steam.

“I’d say Justin’s greatest strength is probably his sense of positioning to make good tackles,” Taylor said. “He’s just got a great feel of the traffic of the offensive line to get himself in place to take down a ball carrier or shoot a gap for a sack. At 290 lbs, he’s a flexible guy that can work in any scheme. 1-gap, 2-gap, DT, big defensive end, run stop, pass rush. It doesn’t really matter. That skill translates, and he’s just always in place to make the clean-up tackle.”

Eboigbe stays balanced through contact and is rarely on the ground. The Alabama defensive lineman is powerful at the point of contact. He gives good backside pursuit and gives good secondary effort. He’s a movable piece along the defensive line.

“His run defense is extremely consistent, and he’s best when used as a big defensive end on the edge,” Taylor said. “Let him take on tackles and cut off outside lanes with his quickness. He’ll also generally do well with 2-gapping in the interior, but can definitely get overpowered by double teams. Alabama’s paired him with two 330-pound nose tackles to hide that, so it’s not something we’ve seen happen often.”

Eboigbe creates movement as a pass rusher with his power. He has good burst to the quarterback once he wins his matchup. This past season, Eboigbe showcased his potential as a pass rusher, recording seven sacks and 30 pressures.

“Eboigbe is a solid complementary pass rusher,” Taylor said. “He’s got a quicker first step than most 300-pound pure interior tackles, so he can occasionally get a jump through a gap for the first pressure as a third-down rusher. Where he excels though is being the second guy that’s always anticipating which way the quarterback is going to try to go and getting the take down.”

Fit with the Packers

Eboigbe is a strong run defender. He’s a player who could help shore up Green Bay’s run defense that gave up 4.4 yards per carry and ranked 28th overall against the run.

While the Packers don’t have an immediate need along the defensive line, Ebogibe has the versatility to be moved around the defensive front to give Hafley creativity with how he deploys his defensive line group in certain packages.

“Eboigbe is an extremely high-floor prospect,” Taylor said. “He has good athleticism, scheme versatility, leadership, and exceptional field awareness are all highly positive traits. Size may be an issue for him in some matchups, and the lack of upper-tier athletic traits keep him from being an elite prospect. Plus you still probably want to do your due diligence on the injury history – even if he’s had a fully healthy 2023. He can be a rotational guy along the line and work his way into a starter within a year or two. He’ll make a play or two per game, and he won’t get you beat by doing something dumb. I think he’s absolutely worth a 3rd round pick, and would be a steal on day 3.”

Eboigbe is a powerful run defender and can disrupt the pocket as a pass-rusher. The Packers have built a solid foundation around Kenny Clark. Eboigbe could be another sturdy brick.
