Pre-Spring Position Preview: Breaking down the Alabama LBs

A closer look at the Alabama linebackers ahead of spring practice

Before we know it, new Alabama head football coach Kalen DeBoer will hit the practice field with his Crimson Tide players for the first time when spring practice gets underway in March.

With the retirement of the legendary Nick Saban, there have not been this many question marks surrounding the football program since 2007 when Saban took over.

Contrary to popular belief, Alabama still has one of the most talented rosters in the country and should be right in the thick of the college football playoff conversation.

Roll Tide Wire will preview each position group as the anticipation builds leading up to spring practice. Let’s take a look at the linebackers.

REPORT: Pair of Alabama defenders expected to forgo NFL, return to college

This would be MASSIVE for the Alabama defense

After a flurry of players decided to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday, it is also being reported that [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are expected to return a pair of defensive players who could have opted for the NFL draft.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported on Wednesday evening that star linebacker Deontae Lawson and defensive lineman Tim Smith are likely to return for the 2024 season instead of entering the NFL draft.

Even after missing three games with injuries, Lawson was Alabama’s second-leading tackler on the season with 67. Smith is a valuable piece along the defensive line for Alabama and wracked up 31 tackles and two sacks as a rotational player up front for the Tide.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for coverage on portal entries and NFL draft decisions for the Crimson Tide.

Projecting which Alabama players will turn pro and which players will return to school

When the season comes to an end, several Alabama players will have to decide whether to go pro or return to school. See who we predict to declare and come back.

Every year, the Alabama football program has roster turnover. Some players elect to enter the NFL draft. Others either elect to return to school or enter the transfer portal.

For upperclassmen, the usual option is to go pro or return to school. In the past, multiple players have increased their stock by returning to Alabama instead of declaring early. Several that come to mind are Reuben Foster, Rashaan Evans, and Najee Harris. Several who entered the draft early and likely would have benefitted from coming back were Adrian Hubbard, Saivion Smith, and Deionte Thompson.

With Alabama’s season ending in less than a month, a handful of players will be tasked with making critical decisions for their future.

Roll Tide Wire projects which Alabama players will turn pro and which players will choose to return to school.

Nick Saban updates injury status of Deontae Lawson, Jaylen Key ahead of Iron Bowl

Could Alabama football be getting two starters back on defense this weekend?

Alabama football head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] wrapped up his Wednesday afternoon press conference moments ago and delivered some promising news on a pair of injured Alabama defenders.

Starting linebacker Deontae Lawson and starting safety Jaylen Key, who have both missed back-to-back games with injuries seem to be on track to make their return to the Alabama lineup this weekend when the Crimson Tide take on the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl.

“They both practiced quite a bit this week. We’ll see how they continue to progress.”

Getting both Lawson and Key back this weekend would be huge for the Alabama defense. Lawson is widely considered one of the top inside linebackers in the SEC and Key is a veteran defensive back that provides the Alabama secondary with more depth and versatility.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the status of both Lawson and Key as the Iron Bowl draws closer.

Nick Saban provides latest injury update for two Alabama players

On Wednesday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban provided the latest update on the status of two injured players — Deontae Lawson and Terrence Ferguson.

In Week 4, Alabama saw several of its key players suffer injuries. Two of the players that were sidelined during the game were linebacker Deontae Lawson and offensive guard Terrence Ferguson. On Wednesday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban mentioned that both players were unable to practice on Wednesday and are “very questionable” for this weekend’s matchup against Mississippi State.

Lawson and Ferguson both suffered ankle injuries in Alabama’s Week 4 win against Ole Miss.

Lawson starts at MIKE linebacker and is in charge of defensive alignment. Through four games, Lawson recorded 26 tackles and two sacks.

Ferguson was a reserve offensive guard but entered the game after starting right guard Darrian Dalcourt suffered an apparent injury. It was not long after Ferguson came into replace Dalcourt that he too was injured.

Needless to say, the Crimson Tide will likely be without two key contributors against the Bulldogs.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to provide the latest injury updates and news surrounding the Alabama football program.

Nick Saban ‘happy with the group’ he has at inside linebacker

Nick Saban ‘happy with the group’ he has at inside linebacker!

One of the more interesting position battles that are taking place this fall in Tuscaloosa is at inside linebacker. Both Henry To’oTo’o and Jaylen Moody are gone from last season, leaving defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and linebackers coach Robert Bala searching for the next great pair to lead the middle of the Alabama defense.

Following the Crimson Tide’s first practice of the fall, head coach Nick Saban took time to field some questions from the media. For obvious reasons, Saban was asked about the inside linebackers and Saban was quick to voice that he feels good about the group.

“I’m happy with the group. Deontae Lawson played really good football when he played last year. He was injured a lot of the time. He sat out the spring, got his knee worked on a little bit. He’s had a good summer. He’s got leadership. He’s got a good understanding of the defense.

“Jihaad Campbell has made really good progress. We’ve got lots of competition at the position. I’m pleased with the way these guys are progressing. They’ve made a tremendous amount of progress. We’ve had a lot of guys out in the spring that – both outside ‘backers, one inside ‘backer – so it gave guys a lot of opportunity to get a lot of reps there. So we’ve got those guys back, we’ve got a little bit of leadership and I like the experience that we have in the group.”

Saban mentioned two names when asked about the group. Obviously, Lawson is likely to be one of the starters at inside linebacker. The redshirt sophomore played a lot of snaps in 2022 and like Saban mentioned, when healthy, Lawson is a very good player.

The second name mentioned by Saban was second-year player Jihaad Campbell. Campbell spent most of his freshman season in 2022 learning the position after mostly being an edge rusher in high school. Campbell has all-world athleticism and if he has finally figured out the position, Alabama could have a dynamic inside linebacker duo in 2023.

Outside of Lawson and Campbell, the Crimson Tide has plenty of options. Georgia transfer Trezmen Marshall is an experienced and athletic linebacker and Justin Jefferson makes his way to Tuscaloosa from junior college and has elite closing speed for an inside linebacker.

Saban’s comments on the position are very telling. He likes what he sees and is confident in the group to make plays this fall.

Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 32 days

We are now just 32 days away from the start of Alabama’s 2023 football season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 32 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

With 32 days remaining, we take a look at a former standout linebacker for the Crimson Tide, C.J. Mosley.

Mosley was a dominating force at inside linebacker for the Tide from 2010-13 where he accumulated 317 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and five interceptions.

Mosley has continued his success in the NFL as he is considered one of the top inside linebackers in the game and currently plays for the New York Jets.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker [autotag]Deontae Lawson[/autotag] currently wears No. 32 for the Tide and should be one of the defensive leaders in 2023.
