Report: Mike Stoops will not be hired as Texas’ linebackers coach

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Texas will not be hiring Mike Stoops as the linebackers coach.

Reports surfaced late Thursday night that Texas was expected to hire former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops as the linebackers coach. A small meltdown occurred within the Longhorns fan base, knowing exactly what Stoops’ defense looked like during his time in Norman.

Well, it must have worked because as of Friday morning, Stoops will not be heading to Austin. According to Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, Steve Sarkisian has said he will not be hiring Stoops as the linebackers coach.

Instead, Texas will be moving in a different direction. The linebackers coach is the only spot Sarkisian has yet to fill on his staff. According to Davis, somebody else is in mind for the position.

“I’m really excited about who we’re talking to,” Sarkisian told Davis.

Stoops was Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2018. Slowly and surely, the Sooners’ weakness became their defensive scheme. It even became historically bad despite making the College Football Playoff in 2015 and 2017. Stoops was fired after the 2018 Red River Shootout that saw Texas score 48 points, the most the Longhorns have scored in the rivalry.

Stoops has spent the past two seasons working as a defensive analyst on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama. It is not known if he will still be joining the Texas staff in a different role.

From a fan’s perspective, seeing a Stoops in burnt orange would have felt awkward. Once his performance on the field and in the recruiting world came into fruition, it would have been even more frustrating.

Tom Herman provides injury update going into bye week

Tom Herman held his weekly Monday press conference after the loss to OU. The head coach provided an injury update before Texas’ bye week.

Head coach Tom Herman held his weekly Monday press conference after the Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma. The head coach provided an injury update before the Longhorns’ bye week.

Starting on the offensive side of the ball with Roschon Johnson. The sophomore running back is dealing with a shoulder sprain suffered against TCU. Herman says Johnson is “day-to-day” and should be in practice when the team starts preparing for Baylor.

Moving to the wideout position, Jake Smith reaggravated his hamstring injury in warmups before Saturday’s matchup. He is expected back by the end of the week.

Smith missed the first two games of the season against UTEP and Texas Tech with a hamstring injury. The wide receiver returned against TCU, having six receptions for 49 yards and one touchdown.

Texas’ secondary has taken a major hit after Oklahoma, losing three starters.

Caden Sterns had been dealing with turf toe going into Saturday and was participating in warmups. However, Herman and the staff did not “feel comfortable” sending him out there after not being able to push off as well as they would have liked.

Opposite of Sterns at strong safety is supposed to be Chris Brown. The senior is currently dealing with a shoulder sprain and will be in a sling. He will be out this week.

Lastly, cornerback Josh Thompson suffered a sprained ankle in the Red River Shootout loss. He is also expected to be out during the bye week but should be able to go next week.

Herman said the bye week “comes at an opportune time” for the Longhorns. Having to deal with five banged-up starters in never ideal. However, having nearly two weeks to recover will help Texas get back to full strength.

UT dropped its second game of the season, losing to OU. Because of the loss, UT drops out of the AP poll for the first time this season.

Texas dropped its second game of the season, losing in Dallas to Oklahoma on Saturday. It was Tom Herman’s fourth career loss to the Sooners, losing three Red River Shootouts and one Big 12 championship matchup. The Longhorns are now a distance away from getting back to Arlington.

Three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Rivalry loss to Oklahoma

It will be another year of the Sooners wearing the Golden Hat. Here are three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma:

Four the fourth time in four years, Tom Herman has dropped a game to Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners. Doing it in a more stressful way than usual, it took four overtimes for the Longhorns to lose in Dallas.

Now, Texas will be two games behind in the Big 12 championship race while Oklahoma also had the tiebreaker. Herman’s goal since Day One has been to win the school’s first conference championship since 2009. He will now have an extreme uphill battle to do so.

The Sooners dominated most of the game until giving up 14 points with five minutes left. From there it was the Sam Ehlinger show, at least getting Texas into a position to win the game.

It will be another year of Oklahoma wearing the Golden Hat, despite fielding one of its worst teams of the century. The Longhorns will have serious soul searching to do before getting back onto the field against Baylor in two weeks.

Red River Rivalry: Three reasons Texas could beat Oklahoma

Texas has the opportunity to grow its series lead on Oklahoma on Saturday. Here are three ways UT can win Saturday’s Red River Shootout.

The beauty of Texas-Oklahoma is the competitiveness of the rivalry. Over the past decade, seven of the matchups have been decided by one score or less. It truly is a game that either team can win, no matter the circumstances.

For the Longhorns, Saturday’s Red River Shootout is nearly a must-win. After dropping last week’s home matchup to TCU, Texas cannot afford to start 1-2 in the Big 12. Especially with Oklahoma already at two conference losses. A win would significantly boost their odds at a Big 12 championship.

Even when the Sooners are down, they pose as a threat. As long as Lincoln Riley is calling plays in Norman, Oklahoma’s offense will be nearly unstoppable. Texas has been able to manage it once and will face that challenge again.

Despite being a three-point underdog, Texas has the opportunity to grow its series lead on Oklahoma on Saturday. Here are three ways the Longhorns win Saturday’s Red River Shootout.
