Three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Rivalry loss to Oklahoma

It will be another year of the Sooners wearing the Golden Hat. Here are three takeaways from Texas’ Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma:

Injuries to star players

Texas did not seem to have any injuries before traveling to Dallas but were without three keys players. Starting with two crucial offensive weapons in Jake Smith and Roschon Johnson, the sophomores were both absent. Smith for the entirety of the game while Johnson had limited playing time.

When second-string slot receiver Jordan Whittington got the start, something was obviously wrong. Smith is supposed to be Sam Ehlinger’s go-to playmaker in crucial situations. Texas’ best wide receiver was deeply missed in the passing game.

As for Johnson, the running back could have been used down the stretch, especially out of the backfield. Keaontay Ingram had fumbled two weeks in a row while Bijan Robinson was a true freshman playing in his first rivalry game. Johnson did get three carries but went for a total of negative three yards. He will need the extended break to get back to full health and lead the Texas running attack.

Moving towards the defensive side, Caden Sterns missed his second consecutive Red River Shootout. B.J. Foster and Chris Brown took over as the safety duo instead.

Having names of that size out for the most important game of the year is never good. Smith’s hamstring injury seems to be a lingering one that will continue throughout the season.

With a bye week upcoming, hopefully, Johnson, Smith, and Sterns can take the two weeks before Baylor to get healthy. If the Longhorns want to get out of their funk, all three are going to be needed going forward.
