Ranking the Big 12 with the incoming Pac-12 schools through Week 4

Remember: We’re not including OU and Texas since they’re gone in 2024. We are including the Four Corners schools.

We continue our season-long series in which we rank the teams in the 2024 Big 12. This doesn’t include Oklahoma and Texas, since those two schools will be in the SEC next year. This does include the Four Corners schools from the Pac-12 — Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and Arizona State — since those schools will be part of the Big 12 next year.

It would be very interesting to see Texas play Utah right now, but those two schools are never going to be fellow Big 12 members. The year Texas leaves is the same year Utah enters. It’s the same for Oklahoma. We are getting one year with those schools playing UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, and Houston, but not for the Arizona schools, Utah, and Colorado.

Let’s rank the 2024 Big 12 through Week 4 of the 2023 season:

Big 12 power rankings heading into Week 3

We power rank the Big 12 through two games.

Two weeks into the college football season, we have already seen a seismic shift in how the Texas Longhorns are viewed. Following an unimpressive Week 1 win over Rice, many had written off starting quarterback Quinn Ewers as a bust.

We didn’t, and we were right.

The Longhorns defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide by technical knockout on Saturday, 34-24. Alabama didn’t try to get back up off the ground. Now the narrative around Texas has changed.

The reality: Texas was always going to be a good team. Its results simply have seen more variance than many would have liked to see. It now leads perhaps the most wide open conference in the country.

Here’s a look at where Big 12 teams might slot in the current power rankings for the conference ahead of Week 3.

Ranking the 2024 Big 12 with the incoming Pac-12 schools through Week 2

The Four Corners schools (Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Utah) are included in these Big 12 rankings. Texas and Oklahoma are excluded.

The death and splintering of the Pac-12 means that all sorts of interesting school comparisons can be made this year.

We are going to spend this 2023 season ranking next year’s Big 12 Conference. In other words, we will keep track of the Big 12 teams which are remaining in the conference next year — everyone other than Texas and Oklahoma — plus the incoming Pac-12 teams from the Four Corners schools: Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, and Colorado.

Remember, as always, that weekly rankings are not a reflection of season-ending projections or which teams are expected to contend for the College Football Playoff. Rankings are similarly not reflections of who would be favored head-to-head on a neutral field.

Rankings are based solely on which teams have the best (or worst) resumes. Teams with FCS wins are ranked lower. Teams with quality wins are ranked higher. This is how every Trojans Wire rankings piece, from every staff writer, is organized.

Here are the 2024 Big 12 rankings — in other words, with the four Pac-12 schools included — after Week 2:

Ranking Pac-12 and Big 12 football teams together after Week 1

Since 4 #Pac12 teams will join the #Big12 next year, let’s rank every team from both conferences and give you more to think about.

Now that we have played a full college football weekend (minus the Clemson-Duke game on Monday night), every college football fan wants to see some rankings and discuss them. Rankings can and do take on various forms and iterations. There are national rankings, Heisman rankings, hot seat rankings, and team rankings.

What’s less conventional — and more interesting — about this 2023 season is that a lot of schools will switch conferences next year, in 2024. Because of all these switches, it is irresistible to look at conferences in different combinations.

In this article, we’ll rank not just the Pac-12, and not just the Big 12, but the two conferences together.

Of course you want to know how Utah and Colorado compare to Oklahoma and Texas. Of course you want to know how Arizona and Arizona State compare to Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Here are our combined Big 12 and Pac-12 rankings, involving all schools currently in both conferences:

Heartland Sports ranks Texas highly in post-spring power rankings

Heartland Sports has someone other than Texas ranked No. 1 in its Big 12 power rankings.

Post-spring Big 12 power rankings continue to roll in from national media outlets. Heartland Sports, a foremost authority on Big 12 sports, is the one source to have ranked the teams in the conference.

Several publications have the Texas Longhorns ranked as the top team. Heartland is not one of those publications. Texas checks in behind Kansas as the No. 2 ranked team in returning production among Big 12 teams.

The Longhorns would seem a logical pick to win the conference given how much more they return than most of the teams in the conference. There’s a wide chasm between Texas and the rest of the field. Among those returners are bonafide All-American candidates in left tackle Kelvin Banks, linebacker Jaylan Ford and wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Let’s break down what Heartland got right and what they got wrong in this prediction.

Jalil Farooq among honorable mentions in College Football Wire’s Big 12 WR rankings

College Sports Wire ranked the top 12 Big 12 wide receivers and Oklahoma Sooners’ Jalil Farooq was among the honorable mentions for 2023.

With the departure of Marvin Mims, Jalil Farooq has a huge opportunity to be the No. 1 wide receiver for the Oklahoma Sooners this season. Going into his third year in Norman, Farooq was included as an honorable mention in College Sports Wire’s Patrick Conn’s Big 12 wide receiver rankings for 2023.

Farooq had a strong season in his first extended run of playing time in 2022. He caught 37 passes for 466 yards and five touchdowns. Farooq also added 140 yards on 15 carries in Jeff Lebby’s offense.

For a player getting his first extended look at the college football level, it was a strong performance. He showed that he’s a fantastic fit for Lebby’s offense that asks the wide receiver to be multi-dimensional.

The Sooners gave 36 carries to wide receivers last season, and Farooq proved to be the most effective. His physical running style made him a terror on the outside with the ball in his hands. He didn’t make anything easy for opposing cornerbacks last year.

In addition to his running ability, Farooq proved to be effective at all levels of the passing game in 2022. He could take a screen pass and make something happen after the catch, could win in the intermediate part of the field and could also beat teams deep like he did here against Nebraska.

Farooq’s ability to win in a variety of ways gives him a huge opportunity in 2023. There’s a good chance he sees more than 100 touches this year. Marvin Mims saw 87 targets, according to Pro Football Focus last season. If Farooq gets a bump in targets to that number and continues to get the football in the wide receiver running game, Farooq will push for 1,000 total yards and double-digit touchdowns as Oklahoma’s No. 1 wide receiver this season.
