Five Longhorns to watch in Saturday’s spring game

Here are five Longhorns to keep an eye on in the spring game on Saturday.

Texas’ annual Orange-White spring game is set for Saturday afternoon at DKR. Fans will get their first glimpse at the 2023 Longhorns before the season opener against Rice in the fall.

It will be Texas’ 15th and final practice of a crucial spring in year three for the Steve Sarkisian era. Players have the chance to show off the strides they have taken to the public in a game-like environment.

Expectations are high for the Longhorns following an improved 2022 campaign. Texas is seen by many as the favorite in the Big 12 Conference and a potential College Football Playoff contender next season.

Texas returns a bulk of its production from a season ago with a talented group of newcomers arriving.

Aside from some of the proven commodities like Jaylan Ford and Xavier Worthy, here are five Longhorns to keep an eye on in the spring game on Saturday. These players could play a major role in Texas’s success this season.

“Prove it year” starts Saturday for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers

Quinn Ewers can inspire plenty of confidence with a good showing on Saturday.

One of the biggest events of the Texas football offseason will take place on Saturday.

The 2023 squad takes the field for its Orange and White game on April 15. The game is big for several players looking to earn starting jobs this season, but the eyes of the fanbase will be on Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Ewers had a roller coaster season last year. The highlights saw Ewers playing at a high level against Alabama and Oklahoma. The low points took place against Oklahoma State and TCU where the Texas passing game went absent without leave.

The Southlake product will look to show fans he’s taken the next step on Saturday. JD PicKell of On3 Sports discussed that topic ahead of the preseason exhibition.

You want to see him look comfortable. … Show me that you have had some more “aha moments” like Steve Sarkisian talked about when he went into the spring. He says it’s starting to make sense more and more for Quinn Ewers.

Inherent in the above sentiment is Ewers needs to improve not only in accuracy but in footwork and reading defenses. If we see him play more consistent football, Texas is set up for a conference title run. We’ll have a firmer grasp on his progression after Saturday’s performance.

Texas Football: Injury report ahead of Orange-White spring game

DJ Campbell and Jalen Catalon are out for Saturday’s spring game.

Texas’ annual Orange-White spring game is set to take place this Saturday. It will be the first opportunity to see the Longhorns on the field until they kick off the 2023 season in the fall.

Steve Sarkisian announced in his media session on Tuesday DJ Campbell and Jalen Catalon will not participate in Saturday’s contest.

Campbell is a second-year offensive lineman who appeared in seven games throughout his freshman season. The former five-star is battling for a starting spot in Texas’ offensive line. Sarkisian highlighted Campbell as a player standing out throughout the spring.

Catalon is a highly touted defensive back transfer from Arkansas. He earned first-team All-SEC honors in 2020 and has since been hindered by injuries. Texas expects Catalon to play a significant role in the secondary this season.

Could Bijan Robinson and Micah Parsons be future teammates in the NFL?

Bijan Robinson is putting in offseason work with Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons. The two were seen training together in Austin, Texas this week.

The former Texas standout is expecting the hear his name called in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. Scouts are raving about Robinson’s dynamic skillset and playmaking ability.

Robinson totaled over 4,200 yards and 41 touchdowns from scrimmage in his three-year college career. He won the 2022 Doak Walker Award as the best running back in the nation.

Could Robinson and Parsons be future teammates at the next level?

The Cowboys hold the No. 26 pick in the first round of the draft. With longtime starter Ezekiel Elliot gone in free agency, Robinson may fill the role as the franchise running back.

Report: Elite 2026 quarterback Julian Lewis takes Texas visit

One of the top quarterback prospects in the nation took a visit to Texas this week.

2026 quarterback Julin Lewis took a visit to Texas this Wednesday, according to a report from On3 Sports.

Coming off of a fantastic freshman season, Lewis looks to be the next big thing in high school football. He threw for 4,118 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2022 for Carrollton High School in Georgia.

Lewis already holds over 32 offers from some of the top schools around the country.

The future five-star prospect broke down his interest in Texas with On3 Sports.

“I built a relationship with coach (Steve Sarkisian) when he was at Alabama, so it carried over to Texas,” Lewis told Chad Simmons. “They just got Arch (Manning), so Arch is probably gonna clear up that quarterback room going into that. That’s probably the cool thing about them.”

Texas is getting an early start in the recruitment of Lewis. Steve Sarkisian has a good track record recruiting the quarterback position during his time at Texas, landing Arch Manning and Maailk Muprhy over the past two classes.

Multiple teams conducting pre-draft visits with Texas LB DeMarvion Overshown

DeMarvion Overshown is gaining interest ahead of the NFL Draft.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, multiple NFL teams are set to meet with Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown for pre-draft visits.

The Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans are among the teams meeting with the standout linebacker.

Overshown earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in his senior season in 2022. He set career highs with 96 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four sacks, helping anchor a much-improved Texas defense.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker moves exceptionally well as a former safety. Overshown’s athleticism allows him to play sideline to sideline to a high level against offensive attacks. He recorded an impressive 4.56-second 40-yard dash and 10-foot-4 broad jump at the 2023 NFL Combine in March.

Experts believe Overshown will get selected as a late day two or early three pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Everything Steve Sarkisian said to the media on Tuesday

Steve Sarkisian met with the media on Tuesday following the Longhorns’ morning practice.

Steve Sarkisian met with the media on Tuesday following the Longhorns’ morning practice.

The third-year Texas head coach provided some updates about where his team stands about halfway through spring practice.

Sarkisian had praise for a few players stepping up from a leadership capacity. He highlighted Jordan Whittington, Quinn Ewers, Ja’Tavion Sanders, Jerrin Thompson, Byron Murphy and Barryn Sorrell as growing leaders in the program.

The Texas staff feels confident about its depth at cornerback. With Ryan Watts as a returning starter coming back, Sarkisian mentioned a few names competing well across from Watts.

Sarkisian complemented the running back room for their efforts in Texas’ most recent scrimmage.

Kitan Crawford was singled out again as a standout in practice. Crawford’s emergence is becoming a common theme this Spring. With Arkansas transfer Jalen Catalon still sidelined with an injury, Crawford is making the most of his extra reps.

Here is a look at everything Steve Sarkisian said as Texas continues its preparation in spring ball.

Texas makes the top five for elite 2024 OT Blake Frazier

Texas makes the cut for the four-star from Austin.

2024 offensive tackle Blake Fraizer is narrowing down his recruitment.

The four-star out of Austin Vandergrift has announced his top five schools, including Clemson, Florida, LSU, Michigan and Texas.

Frazier is rated as the No. 15 offensive tackle and a top 200 prospect in the nation according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He has picked up 25 offers following his junior season of high school.

On3 Sports sat down with Fraizer to discuss his five finalists. He spoke highly of his hometown Longhorns.

“Having grown up in Austin I’ve probably gone to more Longhorn games than any other school,” Frazier said. “The Longhorns are a staple within the city and everyone of my friends loves them and everywhere you go it’s a Hook ‘Em shirt. It’s hard to hate the horns and I definitely have enjoyed the process with them being in it.”

Texas offensive line recruiting has ramped up since Steve Sarkisian took over in 2021. Fraizer fits the profile of what Kyle Flood is looking for in an offensive line prospect.
