Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Zay Flowers

Worried about this matchup at all?

Notre Dame’s home game against Boston College is a big one for [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag]. Barring an unexpected change of heart, all signs point to this being his final time suiting up at Notre Dame Stadium before he jumps to the NFL. The Walter Camp Player of the Year semifinalist has been a real bright spot for the Irish in a season that has had its ups and downs. Hopefully, he can provide the South Bend faithful with one more solid game.

The Eagles’ Zay Flowers, an NFL draft prospect himself, will prove to be a challenge for the Irish’s secondary. Flowers has the most receiving yards in the ACC and the second-most receiving touchdowns. Then again, it could depend on who’s starting at quarterback for the Eagles because we still don’t know as of this writing. Regardless of who it is, the Irish can’t be too sure of their ability to stop him, or Flowers will burn them.

Drew Sanders named national Defensive Player of the Week

Arka

For a quarter, Drew Sanders was, almost literally, everywhere you looked on the football field.

The Alabama transfer had six tackles, two for-loss, and a sack before any other Arkansas player even had two tackles in Saturday’s win over South Carolina. He was, to use the old phrase, a sideline-to-sideline force against the Gamecocks.

Sanders ultimately finished with 11 tackles, three for-loss and two sacks. The numbers were enough to earn him the Walter Camp national Defensive Player of the Week Award.

Through two games, Sanders is second on the team with 16 tackles, first with four TFL, first with three sacks, first with two forced fumbles and he has another quarterback plus a pass break-up.

The Razorbacks are 2-0 and are preparing to host Missouri State on Saturday.

Four Notre Dame linemen named to Lombardi Award watch list

The Lombardi Award has quite the interesting recent history.

The Lombardi Award has quite the interesting recent history. Given to the college football lineman who best embodies the late great Vince Lombardi, the award’s eligibility was expanded to all positions from 2017 to 2020. The award reverted to its original eligibility in 2021, and Notre Dame is benefiting from that in 2022. That’s because four Irish players have been named to the watch list for the award.

Not only is the winner the best player at his position, but he also best reflects Lombardi’s character. The Irish undoubtedly are happy that they will go into the season with four chances to net the sixth Lombardi Award in program history. [autotag]Manti Te’o[/autotag] was the Irish’s last winner in 2012, so they definitely are overdue for another one.

The award can be presented to a lineman on either side of the ball, and since tight ends also can be blockers, they are eligible for the award, too. Keep that in mind as we look at the Irish players on the list:

Adam Korsak gets another preseason All-American offer

Rutgers football’s Adam Korsak named a preseason All-American by Walter Camp.

Another preseason All-American list, another nod for Rutgers football punter Adam Korsak.

On Monday, Korsak was announced as First-Team Preseason All-American at punter by Walter Camp Football.

Arguably the best punter in college football over the past two years, Korsak returns for a sixth and final season at Rutgers as the Van Wilder of the Big Ten. He averaged 45.8 yards per punt last season but it was the Australian’s accuracy and placement that stood out.

Of his 72 punts this past season, Korsak managed 38 to land inside the 20-yard line. He didn’t have a single touchback.  He was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter.

Korsak made multiple was nearly a consensus All-American pick last year, being named Second Team All-American  by the Associated Press, FWAA, Phil Steele and Walter Camp.

He was the only selection from Rutgers football to receive a preseason All-American honor from Walter Camp.

Alabama Morning Drive: Walter Camp’s preseason All-American team features three Tide players

Alabama is well represented on Walter Camp’s preseason first-team All-American list.

Good morning, Tide! Welcome back to our Tuesday edition of Alabama Morning Drive where each weekday morning we try to deliver the top stories involving the Alabama Crimson Tide.

This morning’s installment will be slightly different than most. Instead of having a handful of different stories, we are going to focus on just one.

As we hit the summer months in anticipation of the season, All-SEC and All-American preseason lists continue to roll out.

On Monday, Walter Camp released its 2022 preseason All-American lists and the Crimson Tide had three players land on the first team. A total of 50 college football players were selected from around the country which comprised of 25 players each on the first and second teams.

Here are the players that made this list from Alabama.

Kenneth Walker III makes history as first player to win Walter Camp award while not being a Heisman finalist

Kenneth Walker III makes history as first player to win Walter Camp award while not being a Heisman finalist

Kenneth Walker III has officially made history. On Thursday night, he was given the Walter Camp Player of the Year award, and with that, he became the first player in NCAA football Division I history to win the Walter Camp award while not being a Heisman finalist.

This should definitely vindicate many Michigan State football fans, and give them more ammunition as they continue to eviscerate Heisman voters for his absence in the finalists. It is important to remember that the Heisman is voted on by media members, while the Walter Camp award is voted on by actual coaches. Enough said.

Bennett Williams named Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week

With 8 tackles, two interceptions, and one touchdown, Oregon safety Bennett Williams has been named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week.

Bennet Williams earned honors far more valuable than our Ducks Wire Player of the Game on Saturday night. On Sunday, he was given the title of the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week.

With his 8 tackles, two interceptions, and one touchdown, Williams was a bright spot in the Oregon Ducks defense; a defense that was full of highlights and impressive moments against the Arizona Wildcats. Williams picked up his first interception of the night in the first quarter, and his second late in the fourth quarter to seal the 41-19 victory for the Ducks.

Williams now has three interceptions on the season and is among the team leaders in tackles. His place at the boundary safety position is as solid as we could have ever expected, and the junior is among the biggest leaders on the defense. This honor is well deserved, and surely the first of many to come this season.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced today that Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee and wide receiver Justyn Ross have been named as two of 35 players to watch for the 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced the names of 35 “players to watch” for its 2021 Player of the Year award, the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.

There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball. In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson.

“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president Mario Coppola said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2021 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, December 9. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 55th annual national awards banquet on January 15, 2022 in New Haven, Conn.

Please note: Appearing on the preseason Watch List is not a requirement for a player to win the Walter Camp award or be named to the All-America team.

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.

Texas RB Bijan Robinson named 2021 Preseason All-American by Walter Camp Football

Texas running back Bijan Robinson was recently recognized by Walter Camp Football as a second team All-American.

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is no doubt a superstar in the making.

As a true freshman last season, Robinson lived up to the hype as the former five-star prospect and nation’s top running back in the 2020 recruiting class averaged an impressive 8.2 yards per carry.

He totaled 703 yards and four touchdowns in just 86 rushing attempts in 2020, largely due in part to former head coach Tom Herman choosing to split carries between Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson and Robinson.

Robinson’s carries and stats are expected to skyrocket under new head coach Steve Sarkisian’s offensive system, where he values running backs and consistently feeds his playmakers.

Walter Camp Football recently listed Robinson as a 2021 Preseason Second Team All-American. Two Big 12 players were listed on the first team offense in Iowa State’s Breece Hall and Charlie Kolar and one player from the conference made the first team defense in Oklahoma’s Nick Bonitto.

Robinson joined Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler on the second team offense. No other Longhorns were selected.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation is a well-respected volunteer organization that began announcing All-American teams in 1889. In total, 29 different schools from eight conferences were represented on the Preseason All-America First and Second teams for 2021.
