Final Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster projection ahead of season opener vs. Washington

The Philadelphia Eagles are less than one week away from a season-opening showdown in D.C. against Chase Young and the Washington Football Team.

With training camp over and several notable changes to the roster, here’s our final 53 man roster projection with two extra players added because the Birds technically can elevate two practice squad players per week, basically carrying 55 if they so choose.

***

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld was the unquestioned backup but Hurts looked sharp at times during training camp. It wouldn’t be a shock if the Eagles moved on from Sudfeld, but if he makes the team he’ll be the backup one week from now.

***

Boston Scott

RB – 3 — Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Miles Sanders

The Eagles appeared prepared to enter the 2020 NFL season with two holdovers from last season and a refurbished Corey Clement, but it appears only three running backs will make the cut.

Look for the undrafted rookie Adrian Killins to find a role on the expanded practice squad after being a part of the first round of cuts.

Former Badger linebacker T.J. Edwards continues to receive high praise from Philadelphia media

Despite a stellar college career that included 53 games played, 366 tackles, 37.5 tackles-for-loss, 8 sacks, 10 interceptions and 15 passes defended, former Badger T.J. Edwards did not hear his named called during the 2019 NFL Draft.

Edwards then had to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent and grind his way onto the 53-man roster.

Well, he did that and more–stepping into a starting role late in the season and finishing his rookie campaign with a ProFootballFocus grade of 86.6, good for best on the team at the position.

Related: 94WIP: Former Badger T.J. Edwards ‘working for breakout season’

The Philadelphia Eagles are not a team that prioritizes linebackers in Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz’s “wide 9” defense.

They have found a diamond in the rough with Edwards, though, and there has been endless chatter in the city about Edwards’ upcoming starting role and his opportunity for a breakout season.

Yesterday this chatter continued when NBCSports’ Dave Zangaro spoke to the former Badger and learned where he stands entering his sophomore campaign. The title of the piece? “Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards still driven by those who doubt him.

“Edwards, 24, is ready to prove he can play against the pass too.

‘It’s something I’ve got my whole life, in terms of not being athletic or anything like that,’ Edwards said during training camp, on a day when he skyed to pick off a Nate Sudfeld pass. ‘But I kind of tried to prove those things wrong in college. I thought I did a decent job and now it’s kind of that whole progression over again where I gotta prove myself again, that I can cover in the pass.’

‘So I’m excited. I think this camp has helped me a lot just in terms of reading, different kind of patterns and those things like that, so I feel really good in the pass and the run. So, I’m excited to see kind of how things shake out.'”

Edwards continued to note how he’s still motivated by those who doubted his skills coming out of Wisconsin.

“‘I mean, I’d be lying to you if that’s something that I still don’t think about every once in a while in terms of not getting my name called,’ Edwards said. ‘It’s something that I think keeps me going. But at the end of the day, I’m very happy with how everything worked out and I wouldn’t change that for the world. So I think, you know, definitely helps my hunger and keeps that chip on my shoulder at all times.'”

Finally, the piece ends with a powerful note: “There are people who don’t think he can handle a bigger role. Edwards welcomes that viewpoint.”

The former Badger will start at linebacker for the Eagles this season alongside former Nebraska Cornhusker Nate Gerry. Those who cover and root for the team in Philadelphia did not have high expectations for him entering as an undrafted free agent.

Now? The hype is noticeable with the city getting behind him as one of the starters and Edwards himself acknowledging what this year will hold.

Things are all trending up for the former Badger linebacker, a sentence that seems to be said constantly with Badger products at the position.

3 takeaways from the news that Eagles LB Jatavis Brown is retiring

3 takeaways from Eagles LB Jatavis Brown retiring

[jwplayer WwHqH2Su]

The Philadelphia Eagles announced some unexpected news on Sunday when the team announced that they had place linebacker Jatavis Brown on the reserve/retired list.

Here are three takeaways from the move.

***
1. Brown may have wanted to opt-out

Signed early on in free agency, Brown went from would-be starter to unlikely to make the roster, and his love for the game likely dwindled from there. The timing is definitely odd and Brown was one of the linebackers mentioned in Jim Schwartz’s recent zoom meeting with the media. Schwartz described Brown as a player he was “excited” to add to the position because of his speed, along with draft picks Davion Taylor & Shaun Bradley.

In a move that could signal the end of his NFL career, the Philadelphia Eagles have placed linebacker Jatavis Brown on the reserved/retired list.

Brown started 23 of 56 games played in San Diego and LA after being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. In his career, Brown had accounted for 265 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 12 passes deflected, and 3 forced fumbles.

He was expected to be a potential starter at middle linebacker, but the move will likely increase the chances that T.J. Edwards starts in the middle.

Dante Olson named the Eagles one UDFA who should turn heads in training camp

[jwplayer WwHqH2Su]

The Philadelphia Eagles take a lot of heat of not properly addressing the linebacker position but the past two offseasons have seen Howie Roseman land stud linebackers with great value at a low price.

Last summer it was T.J. Edwards, undrafted out of Wisconsin and likely to be the Eagles starting middle linebacker at Washington.

Now after the 2020 NFL Draft that saw the Eagles select two linebackers, an undrafted free agent from Montana could be the prized gem of the entire process.

Bleacher Report just profiled the one undrafted free agent from all 32 NFL team that should turn heads in training camp and Olson made the list for the Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles: LB Dante Olson

Getting an award-winning player in free agency is always a good thing.

So it goes for the Philadelphia Eagles with linebacker Dante Olson, the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year who just put up 179 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, four pass breakups, and one interception last season at FCS program Montana.

Linebacker was one of the weaker points of the Eagles roster going into the draft after the loss of Nigel Bradham, which would explain why they selected several and added more in free agency.

But Olson’s stellar production and nose for the football on a situational basis should have him standing out in camp.

Olson was the 2019 Buck Buchanan Award winner, which is given to the most outstanding defensive player in the FCS. A tackling machine at Montana in the last two seasons, Olson has all the goods and could make a lot of teams regret passing on him.

Olson started 25 of 47 games at Montana and during his final season, he set the Big Sky Conference’s single-season record for tackles with 179 and made 26 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. In the game that put him on the map, Olson registered 14 tackles against Oregon.

A smart and instinctive ball-hawk, Olson plays in the mold of T.J. Edwards.

Jim Schwartz excited about Eagles speed at LB; T.J. Edwards’ maturation process

Jim Schwartz has high-praise for T.J. Edwards; Excited about Eagles speed at LB

[jwplayer M7O9ghZb]

The Philadelphia Eagles allowed Nigel Bradham to walk into free agency, choosing to retool the roster and add speed at wide receiver and linebacker. The Eagles add Jatavis Brown in free agency and then added two speedy tacklers in Davion Taylor and Temple product, Shaun Bradley.

During his Friday zoom meeting, Schwartz was giddy about the new speed at linebacker and he was especially excited about T.J. Edwards’ potential at middle linebacker.

Nate Gerry is solid as a returner, while Jatavis Brown’s play dipped with the Chargers, but he’s ultra-quick and could be a sleeper candidate at linebacker. The dream scenario would be for T.J. Edwards to quarterback the defense at middle linebacker, with the hybrid package of Davion Taylor, Shaun Bradley and Nate Gerry handling the passing down.

GM Howie Roseman stayed true to his retooling effort, forgoing big named free agents at specific positions to add youth and speed to the roster.

In the NFL draft, Roseman made waves by selecting a quarterback in the second round and then securing Carson Wentz some speed via trade (Marquise Goodwin) and three solid draft picks in Jalen Reagor, John Hightower, and Quez Watkins.

With the training camp here and set to start here’s a look at the Eagles projected 53-man roster.

***

QB – 3 — Carson Wentz, Jalen Hurts, Nate Sudfeld

Sudfeld is the unquestioned backup, but the Eagles have made it clear that Hurts will be involved from the beginning, meaning he’ll likely make the roster every week, especially with it expanding two more players.

A huge battle to watch will be Sudfeld and Hurts, with the rookie possibly ascending early on or struggling to learn the ropes as an NFL passer. Either way, Hurts is apart of the Eagles’ future and apart of the present.

RB – 4 — Boston Scott, Corey Clement, Miles Sanders, Michael Warren

The Eagles appeared prepared to enter the 2020 NFL season with three holdovers from last season and Elijah Holyfield was the third name. After bringing Corey Clement back in free agency and signing undrafted free agent Michael Warren, this group will look different. Sanders will be a year stronger, while the Eagles brass loves Boston Scott and what he brings.  Look for the undrafted rookie Michael Warren, to snag the role of goalline and short-yardage back if it isn’t Jalen Hurts there as well.

Eagles’ linebackers land near the bottom in a PFF ranking of all 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season

Philadelphia Eagles are No. 27 in a PFF ranking of all 32 units entering the 2020 NFL season

[jwplayer yLme5Tpf]

The Philadelphia Eagles have received scathing criticism from analysts and pundits for years over not properly addressing the linebacker position.

The Eagles let Nigel Bradham walk in free agency and have optimism in the position after drafting Davion Taylor and Shaun Bradley, while also signing Jatavis Brown via free agency.

With all the criticism the Eagles receive for the play of their linebackers, the unit in Philadelphia isn’t the worst in the league according to this ranking from Pro Football Focus.

The Birds landed a low ranking in the bottom-five of the NFL, but they aren’t the worst, landing at No. 27 on the list.

27. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
There’s a new look to the Eagles’ linebacking unit as they added speed this offseason and will have a few new faces competing for playing time.

Nathan Gerry returns after playing 669 snaps last season — including the playoffs — and posting a career-high 62.2 overall grade. Gerry hasn’t been as effective in coverage as you’d expect to see from a college safety, and tackling has also been an issue given that he’s missed 17.8% of his attempts, ninth-worst in the league.

T.J. Edwards is the name to watch in this group as the former undrafted free agent has played well when called upon — he earned a 77.6 overall grade in the preseason and an 83.4 overall mark on 122 regular-season and postseason snaps. Edwards is below average athletically, and there may be some coverage limitations, but he’s been a productive player since his freshman year at Wisconsin.

Duke Riley carved out a niche on special teams and that’ll likely keep him on the roster, while Brown has speed and athleticism but has seen his play dip since 2016 rookie season, his best as a pro.

The two wildcards in the new hybrid style Eagles defense is Davion Taylor (third-round) and Shaun Bradley (sixth-round).

Taylor is still learning the game, but he’ll enter training camp as one of the Eagles fastest players (4.39 speed) and could transition into Philadelphia’s version of Deion Jones for Atlanta.

Bradley excelled at Temple in the open field and could become an option on third down when his coverages skills are most needed against opposing linebackers.

The Rams were last on the list at No. 32, followed by Cleveland (31), Cincinnati (30), Miami (29), and Green Bay (28) rounding out the bottom-five. Bobby Wagner and the Seattle Seahawks had the top linebacking corps on the list, followed by the Dallas Cowboys (2), Tampa Bay (3), Houston (4) and Indianapolis are your top-five.

The Eagles could easily move up this list as the season progresses.
