Texans to turn to S Grayland Arnold if CB Tavierre Thomas doesn’t play against the Jaguars

The Houston Texans are prepared to turn to S Grayland Arnold to handle nickel if CB Tavierre Thomas can’t make it against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tavierre Thomas has carved out a role as one of the best nickel backs in the NFL. However, the Houston Texans may need to find an adequate replacement in Week 3 as the former Ferris State product missed Wednesday’s practice with a hand injury.

While Thomas missed the first of three practices for Week 3, the Texans still have to be prepared in case their starting nickel isn’t able to face the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at TIAA Bank Field.

Coach DeMeco Ryans met with reporters at NRG Stadium and revealed how the Texans would approach the nickel should Thomas be unavailable.

“With Tavierre, with him and his injury, we’ll have Grayland [Arnold] step into his place and Grayland will be ready to go,” said Ryans.

Arnold has been a mainstay on special teams with 42 such snaps logged through the first two games. As Houston has dealt with injuries to safeties Jalen Pitre, Jimmie Ward, and Eric Murray, Arnold has played 20 snaps on defense through the first two games.

The 5-10, 190-pound defensive back has been with the Texans since Week 2, 2021, when he signed with the practice squad. Arnold has recorded four combined tackles through 14 career games with Houston.

Grayland Arnold reflects on role with Texans after celebrating 26th birthday

Grayland Arnold reflected on his role with the #Texans and his NFL journey in comments to the media after his 26th birthday.

On Monday, Houston Texans defensive back Grayland Arnold celebrated his 26th birthday. He received gifts from various family members and friends, but the one that stood out the most came a week prior from the Houston Texans organization and the coaching staff: a spot on the 53-man roster.

Arnold went undrafted in 2020 before eventually signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was released in September 2021 and was immediately signed by the Texans. After spending time on the practice squad, the former second-team All-American was elevated to the active roster against the Seattle Seahawks last December.

“Man, you don’t know how good it felt not to get that call,” said Arnold of earning his spot on the Texans’ roster. “Getting it for the first three years of my career makes me cautious once this time of the year comes around, but things worked in my favor, and here I am.”

Good fortune wasn’t the only thing that worked in Arnold’s favor during training camp; his hard work and dedication stood out to former defensive coordinator and first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans.

“With Grayland [Arnold], he’s another player who’s done a really good job all off-season of just handling any role that we’ve given him,” Ryans explained during his press conference on Monday. “Grayland has done really well, done a great job on special teams. I can show highlights of Grayland every single day in our team meeting because he does it exactly like we teach it. He shows up; he makes the plays.

“When it comes to the defense, Grayland is versatile enough where he can play the safety; he’s done a really good job at safety. We saw that against the Saints in the preseason. Now, he’s getting some reps as well at the nickel position, so we’ll see where he can handle. Grayland is a good football player, and as many good football players as we can get out on the field, that’s what we’ll strive to do.”

Arnold stood out in training camp and the preseason, especially in Houston’s final game against the New Orleans Saints when he had an interception in the end zone and nearly had another one on the middle of the field late in the game.

His opportunity came when the Texans cut veteran slot corner Desmond King, who had spent two years with the team. The move will afford Arnold more playing time at nickel back, a position that the natural safety has played in his career.

“The only difference is the eye progression,” Arnold said of playing both positions. “That is one of the most important things is the eye progression. You are seeing different things, and things are happening faster whether than slower at safety. At the end of the day, I try not to overthink it and let it be football.”

With a short practice on Monday, Arnold planned on spending some downtime with his family to celebrate his birthday. The only thing missing is the cake from his daughter, who made one for him but decided to eat it herself.

Texans place WR Nico Collins on injured reserve; make 2 other roster moves

The Houston Texans have placed WR Nico Collins on injured reserve along with two other roster moves.

Nico Collins’ season is over.

The Houston Texans placed Collins on injured reserve ahead of their Week 16 encounter with the Tennessee Titans Dec. 24 at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from Nissan Stadium. With a four-game minimum a player must remain on injured reserve before being placed back on the active roster, and Houston having three games to go, Collins’ season is over.

The former 2021 third-rounder from Michigan caught 37 passes for 481 yards and two touchdowns through 10 games, seven of which he started. The production is an improvement over his 33 catches for 446 yards and a score through 14 games in 2021, eight of which he started.

The Texans used Collins’ empty roster spot to activate safety Grayland Arnold from the injured reserve.

Houston also signed former Dallas Cowboys wideout Malik Turner to the practice squad. The former 2018 undrafted free agent from Illinois had a prolific 2021 with Dallas wherein he caught 12 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

Texans DE Jonathan Greenard, S Grayland Arnold return to practice

Houston Texans DE Jonathan Greenard and S Grayland Arnold were activated from injured reserve and returned to practice, starting their 21-day window.

The Houston Texans are getting contributors on defense back with five games to go.

Defensive end Jonathan Greenard and safety Grayland Arnold returned to practice on Wednesday, activating their 21-day window where they can transition back from injured reserve to the 53-man roster.

Greenard has been out since Week 5 with a calf injury. The former 2020 third-rounder from Florida has nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits through four games, all of which he has started.

Arnold has been out of action since Week 9 with a quadriceps injury. The Kountze High School product has one special teams tackle with his 98 special teams snaps.

Grayland Arnold exits Week 8 matchup with quad injury

Arnold is questionable to return to the matchup against Tennessee late in the fourth quarter

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”SpyZcoy7dz-2330587-7498″]

Safety Grayland Arnold left the Houston Texans Week 8 matchup against the Tennessee Titans with a quad injury and has been deemed questionable to return midway through the fourth quarter. In a game that the Texans have been dominated, the loss of a talented contributor in the secondary is an unwelcome development, especially as Houston tries to make something happen on the game’s final drives.

Arnold is a third-year pro who has played a role on the Texans’ special teams unit this season. The extent of the injury is unknown at this juncture, but the coaching staff is sure to comment on his status after the game. In his absence, the team will need to find someone else to fill his role, as he represents the last line of depth on the team’s official depth chart.

This game looks like it is on ice, as Houston is facing a 14-point deficit with just over five minutes to play. While Arnold’s injury won’t be seen as a reason that Houston fell short in this matchup, his status will be something to watch as the Texans prepare to play the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9.

UPDATE: Arnold has been downgraded to out for the remainder of the matchup.

Texans sign S Grayland Arnold to active roster ahead of Chargers game

The Houston Texans have signed S Grayland Arnold to the active roster as part of their roster moves for Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Houston Texans have made three roster moves ahead of their Week 4 tilt with the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

Houston signed safety Grayland Arnold from the practice squad to the active roster. Arnold had a key special teams tackle in the fourth quarter of the 23-20 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The Texans also elevated tight end Jordan Akins and tight end Mason Schreck as part of their two standard elevations for the game. Houston has injuries at tight end with Pharaoh Brown (shoulder/hip), who is limited, and Brevin Jordan (ankle).

Akins caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Davis Mills in Week 3.
