The best bargains and most underrated players in 2023 NFL free agency (so far)

Everybody wants to talk about the big-name signings, but here are the best bargains of the 2023 free agent class so far.

There are people in the NFL — especially people who have endured one or more instances of top-heavy free-agency spending — who will tell you that if you want to contend for a Super Bowl, the bottom third of your roster will be just as important as the top third at some point in time. Yes, you want optimal performances from the best and brightest, and if you get it, that’s great. But one of your star players will probably miss time with an injury. Another star might be involved in a contract dispute. And it’s entirely possible that the big-ticket free agent your team brought in for the gross national product of Estonia is actually a bad fit for what his new coaches would like him to do.

It happens all the time. To counter all of these little nightmares, it’s wise to find the best bargains in any free-agent cycle — those players who may not be marquee names, but whose performances on the field makes them important to you.

Especially when things go wrong up top.

There are still quite a few talented players on the open market, so we’ll be adding to this list as we go… but for now, here are the free agents either re-signing in their old homes or going to new locations who will impact their rosters much more than you may think.

Former Jets guard Nate Herbig agrees to terms with Steelers on 2-year contract

Nate Herbig joining the Steelers

Former Jets offensive guard Nate Herbig is joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, agreeing to terms on a two-year contract, per Mike Garafolo.

The deal is worth $8 million with $4 million guaranteed.

Herbig stepped in at right guard after the host of injuries to the offensive line, starting 11 games for the Jets in 2022. Ironically enough, his first start of 2022 was against the team he will now be playing for, the Steelers.

Herbig joined the Jets in 2021 after three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He came into the league undrafted out of Stanford in 2019.

Jets’ Week 11 Wednesday injury report: Corey Davis remains question mark

Will Corey Davis return this week? Looks 50/50 for now.

Fresh off their bye in Week 10, the New York Jets are back on the practice field to prepare for their big rematch in Week 11 with the New England Patriots. But it remains to be seen if one of their top wide receivers will be available for the game.

There’s a little concern with wide receiver Corey Davis. After the team was hopeful he could return after the bye week, Davis missed Wednesday’s practice as he continues to recover from the knee injury he suffered in Week 7 against the Broncos.

Head coach Robert Saleh did say there’s a chance Davis will be out there on Sunday but noted that Davis would not practice Wednesday. “He has a chance,” said Saleh. “He’s not going to practice today, but we’re going to see how far we can progress him over the course of the week.”

In other injury report news for the Jets, guard Nate Herbig also missed practice yesterday with a shin injury, but Saleh’s comment gave the sense Herbig will be fine, saying “he’s dealing with something with his leg” but that he’s “not really concerned” about his availability for Sunday.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins also missed practice Wednesday and the likelihood is he will be out this week, but Saleh said he is “pretty confident” that he will not have to go on injured reserve.

“Rankins has been fantastic,” Saleh said when asked about his play. “He’s having a really nice season. Hopefully, this injury is not too long, but it’s next man up mentality. We’ll see how the week goes with how we utilize it. We have been playing plus-one, plus-two on the d-line, and activating 10 anyway. We’ll figure it out as the week goes.”

Duane Brown is on his typical week of being listed as limited in practice. There is no concern with him.

Max Mitchell is expected to return to practice this week as well, but he will not show up on the official injury report yet as he has not been activated from injured reserve. Saleh said Cedric Ogbuehi will remain at right tackle and “we’ll see how Max progresses.”

For the Patriots, only one active player missed practice Wednesday and that was defensive lineman DaMarcus Mitchell with an illness.

Punter Jake Bailey (back), DL Christian Barmore (knee), S Kyle Dugger (ankle), LB Anfernee Jennings (back), WR DeVante Parker (knee) and LB Josh Uche (hamstring) were all limited.

Seahawks: Ranking 11 free agents to target after the 2022 NFL draft

Here are 11 of the top veterans still on the market who should interest Seattle.

As rookie minicamp kicks off, the Seahawks don’t have much salary cap space left for the 2022 season. However, they could create a bit more with a few roster cuts, including running back Chris Carson. That would save them about $4.6 million if it’s a post-June 1 designation.

That might give Seattle enough cash to make one last impact free agent signing this spring. Here are 11 of the top veterans still on the market who should interest them.

Jets claim former Eagles OL Nate Herbig off waivers

Nate Herbig is headed to New York after being claimed by the Jets following being waived by the Philadelphia Eagles

Nate Herbig wasn’t unemployed for long and the former Stanford offensive guard landed in a perfect situation after being claimed by the Jets according to Mike Kaye.

Back in March, Philadelphia placed a right of first refusal tender on Herbig giving the organization the right to match any offer given by another team.

Herbig was due to make $2.433 million next season after starting 17 total games for the Eagles over the past two seasons due to injury.

Philadelphia also has Isaac Seumalo returning from a 2021 foot injury, and the organization has several options at either guard spot heading into the NFL draft.

In New York, Herbig joins Dan Feeney and Greg Van Roten as offensive guards.

Eagles looking to add big named prospects to the roster as undrafted free agents

Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman looking to add big names to the roster as undrafted free agents

The Eagles entered Thursday night’s NFL draft with 10 picks after acquiring assets via 2021 trades with the Dolphins and Colts (Carson Wentz).

Prior to the start of the 2022 selection process, there was speculation that Philadelphia would look to trade up into the top-10 for an impact player. The Eagles ultimately moved from No. 15 overall up to No. 13 overall to select Georgia All-American defensive tackle, Jordan Davis.

In doing so, Philadelphia parted ways with the Nos. 15, 124, 162, and 166 picks to the Texans to move up two spots where it selected Davis.

Moments later after the Chargers used the No. 17 overall pick on Zion Johnson, the Eagles shook up the draft, trading picks No. 18 overall, and a third-round pick (101) to the Tennessee Titans for star wide receiver, A.J. Brown.

That trade left Philadelphia with four picks remaining in the draft and the idea was that Howie Roseman might try to acquire more picks on Day 3.

The Eagles now appear content to exit the draft with five or six players because of a historically strong undrafted free-agent class that could see several big names looking for a training camp home.

Recent undrafted free agents who’ve game action with Philadelphia include Corey Clement, Sua Opeta, Nate Herbig, Kayode Awosika, Joe Ostman, Jack Stoll, Brett Toth, Greg Ward, Marvin Wilson, T.J. Edwards, and future Hall of Famer Jason Peters, who originally signed with the Bills.
