Dolphins work out 7 players on Tuesday

Miami worked out 7 before signing 1.

After the Miami Dolphins officially lost running back Darrynton Evans from their practice squad on Monday, they had an open spot that they needed to fill.

With that knowledge, the Dolphins held workouts on Tuesday that included seven players before they signed running back Jake Funk to their practice squad.

While they’ve already made the signing, it may be worth it to get familiar with those who Miami opted not to sign on Tuesday.

Former Georgia RB Elijah Holyfield provides positive injury update

Holyfield is recovering from a torn ACL injury.

Former Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield looks ready to attempt a return to the NFL. Holyfield, who suffered an ACL injury during training camp in July 2022 with the Cincinnati Bengals, is looking to get signed to a roster before training camp.

Elijah Holyfield went undrafted in the 2019 NFL draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He made the Panthers practice squad in 2019 and later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles cut Holyfield on Aug. 29, 2021, ahead of the NFL roster cut deadline. The former Georgia running back spent time with their practice squad from 2019 to 2021 and appeared on their active roster.

Holyfield provided an update on his recovery from a torn ACL via social media:

Holyfield looks explosive and ready to return. This may be one of his final opportunities to get traction with an NFL team.

Holyfield played at Georgia from 2016-18. In three seasons, he tallied 1,340 yards and nine touchdowns. His best season came during his junior year in 2018, when he racked up 1,018 yards and seven scores.

Holyfield is the son of legendary boxer Evander Holyfield.

Madden 23 player ratings for former Georgia running backs

Madden ratings for six former UGA running backs

EA Sports is revealing ratings for Madden NFL 23 this week.

Included in the ratings are six former Georgia football running backs: Nick Chubb, D’Andre Swift, Sony Michel, James Cook, Zamir White and Elijah Holyfield.

Both Cook and White will be rookies during the 2022 NFL season after helping Georgia to its first national title in 41 years.

Chubb ranks tied for the second best ball carrier in the game with Christian McCaffrey. Only Derrick Henry ranks higher.

Swift, the third year back, has had durability issues but has shown he’s capable of being a star if he can stay healthy.

And Michel is now on the Miami Dolphins after winning his second Super Bowl in four years.

Here is how each former UGA running back rates in Madden 23:

Why Panthers fans might want to root for the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI

Are you a Panthers fan still without a rooting interest for Super Bowl LVI? Well, here’s why you might want to pull for the Bengals.

Sans a division rival or Tom friggin’ Brady, Super Bowl LVI carries one of the least offensive matchups Carolina Panthers can find. So, if you’re in that particular group of viewers (and don’t have any guap down on the game), you may be also trying to find a rooting interest for Sunday.

Well, look no further than the Cincinnati Bengals!

The AFC champions carry a total of five former Panthers on their roster—which is four more than the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams can claim. Being that the Panthers themselves can’t capture the Lombardi Trophy, then maybe cheering on some old friends is the best route to take for this one.

Those players include:

  • CB Eli Apple
  • DT Zach Kerr
  • LB Clay Johnston
  • RB Elijah Holyfield
  • RB John Brannan

Three of the five familiar faces are members of the Bengals’ active roster—Apple, Kerr and Johnston. Holyfield, who broke into the league with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2019, and Brannan, a Charlotte, N.C. native, are currently on Cincinnati’s practice squad.

Kerr, oddly enough, will be facing the Rams for the second time this postseason. His first encounter with Los Angeles came in a Wild Card Round loss as a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Johnston has already made a unique stamp of his own as well in the playoffs. His stop of running back Derrick Henry on a 2-point try helped the Bengals upset the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Round.

And Apple, of course, is Apple. Certainly no stranger to the spotlight this season, the former first-round draft pick is playing the best ball of his six-year NFL career—which, contrary to what Matt Rhule may have told him, is still alive and well.

Ravens bring in five players for tryouts including trio of RBs

The Ravens tried out a trio

The Baltimore Ravens have been hit extremely hard by injuries so far over the course of 2021, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Over the past week the team has lost two running backs to season-ending injuries in J.K. Dobbins and Justice Hill, leaving them with just two healthy rushers on their roster.

On Monday the team brought in five players for tryouts, three of which were running backs. Two of those rushers were veteran options, while one has very little experience at the NFL level. Either way, it makes sense that Baltimore is looking at outside options at the position considering how few bodies they have right now.

Bell is the most accomplished of the group, carrying the football 1,556 times for 6,453 yards and 40 rushing touchdowns while also catching 394 passes for 3,259 yards and eight scores through the air. However, he isn’t the player he once was, and comes with some off-field concerns as well.

Freeman was recently released by the New Orleans Saints, but has seen success at the NFL level. He’s put up 4,144 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns on 1,005 carries while also being a threat as a receiver, catching 264 footballs for 2,073 yards and 11 scores.

Holyfield is a bit of a different story. He’s only played one game at the NFL level after signing with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was cut and re-signed to Carolina’s practice squad that offseason, but hasn’t made a very big impact as a professional yet.

It remains to be seen if the Ravens will value special teams ability as well as proven ability out of their third running back. Hill was a good special teams player, but Bell and Freeman likely aren’t suiting up on that side of the ball. Baltimore needs a third running back (and probably another on the practice squad as well), so a signing or two will likely be coming in the next few days.

Baltimore Ravens are working out former Georgia football running back Elijah Holyfield. The Ravens desperately need help at running back. Baltimore’s Justice Hill just tore his Achilles. The Ravens are already without starting running back J.K. Dobbins, who tore his ACL and is out for the season.

Baltimore is additionally working out NFL veterans Le’Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman. The current projected starting back for the Ravens is Gus Edwards.

The Ravens previously worked out former Georgia Bulldog Todd Gurley this summer.

The Philadelphia Eagles cut Elijah Holyfield on Aug. 29 ahead of the NFL roster cut deadline. The former Georgia Bulldogs running back spent time with their practice squad last season and appeared on their active roster.

Holyfield played college football for three seasons at the University of Georgia. Holyfield went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He made the Panthers practice squad in 2019 and then later signed with the Eagles.

The Eagles are a little over 24-hours away from having to cut their roster down to 53 players before the 4:00 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.

Following the final round of cuts, GM Howie Roseman will start the process of assembling his 16-player practice squad, which can now include up to six players with more than two accrued seasons.

Here’s our prediction for the Eagles practice squad ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Philadelphia Eagles waive RB Elijah Holyfield

Even after some hard-nosed running during the Eagles final two preseason games, running back Elijah Holyfield has been waived along with Cary Angeline and JaQuan Bailey.

The former Georgia Bulldogs running back will be a practice squad player if he clears waivers.
