Countdown to Georgia football: No. 66, Solomon Kindley

No. 66, Solomon Kindley.

Georgia football fans are counting down the days until the season returns, and as we approach the 66-day mark, let’s shine a spotlight on a notable Bulldog who wore the No. 66 jersey: offensive lineman Solomon Kindley, who is now an NFL free agent.

Kindley, a 6-foot-5, 330 pound beast, signed with Georgia as a three-star recruit out of Jacksonville, Florida in the class of 2016.

As a freshman at Georgia, Kindley was named to Coaches’ Freshman All-SEC Team and played in over 28 games over three years for the Bulldogs.

Kindley was part of one of the best Georgia offensive lines in recent memory that included Andrew Thomas and Isaiah Wilson and helped lead the Bulldogs to three straight seasons of 11 wins or more.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

If there is one thing Kindley proved at Georgia is that he is a player that will exceed expectations. On a star studded line at Georgia, Kindley was named the most improved Georgia player in 2018 and won the “Up Front” award, given at team’s post-season awards gala in 2019.

He was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 draft by the Dolphins and spent two seasons in Miami, making 15 career starts. He was then picked up to the New York Giants practice squad and was released this past May.

Former Dolphins starting OL waived by Giants

He started 13 games for Miami in 2020.

After the 2023 NFL draft, there will be plenty of veterans who will find themselves on the free-agent market due to their roster spot being taken by a rookie.

One player who falls under that category is former Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Solomon Kindley, who was waived on Friday by the New York Giants.

Kindley, 25, spent most of the 2022 season on the Giants’ practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract after the year ended.

The former Georgia Bulldog was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2020 draft by the Dolphins. After starting 13 games in his rookie season, Kindley lost his role two weeks into his second season. He still appeared on special teams, but he was no longer a starter.

It will be interesting to see if Kindley can find another opportunity in the NFL, or if this is the end for the big man.

Giants waive Solomon Kindley, Terrell Burgess

The New York Giants have waived OL Solomon Kindley and DB Terrell Burgess (failed physical designation).

Editor’s note: After going unclaimed, Burgess reverted to the Giants’ reserve/physically unable to perform list.

The New York Giants waived two players on Friday — offensive lineman Solomon Kindley and defensive back Terrell Burgess.

Both Kindley and Burgess had been signed to reserve/futures deals in January but with room on the 90-man roster at a premium, they drew the short straw.

Burgess was waived with a failed physical designation.

Kindley was originally a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in 29 games for the team (15 starts) before being released last August. He was picked up by the Giants and placed on their practice squad in October before signing his reserve/future deal.

Burgess was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in the 2020 NFL draft. After picking up a Super Bowl ring, he was released last November and promptly signed to the Giants’ practice squad.

In Week 12 against the Dallas Cowboys, Burgess was elevated to the active roster but took just five special teams snaps.

Following the releases, the Giants’ roster stands at 89 men.

Giants sign WR James Washington to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed wide receiver James Washington, a 2018 second-round pick, to their practice squad.

The New York Giants held tryouts in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Tuesday and those will lead to at least one new addition.

Wide receiver James Washington has been signed to the team’s practice squad.

The 5-foot-11, 216-pound Washington was originally a second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2018 NFL draft. He spent his first four seasons with the team before joining the Dallas Cowboys this past offseason.

Washington suffered a broken foot in training camp and was on IR for most of the season. Dallas activated him in early December before waiving him last week.

In 62 career games (25 starts), Washington has hauled in 114 receptions for 1,629 yards and 11 touchdowns.

In addition to Washington, the Giants also worked out wide receiver Adam Humphries and quarterback Nathan Rourke.

Finally, the Giants signed offensive lineman Solomon Kindley from their practice squad to a Reserve/Futures deal.

Giants activate Nick Gates from PUP, shuffle practice squad

The New York Giants have activated OL Nick Gates from the PUP list and made a couple practice squad transactions.

The New York Giants signed veteran offensive lineman Solomon Kindley to their practice squad and released running back Antonio Williams.

Kindley, 6-foot-4 and 335-pounds, was a fourth-round pick out of Georgia by the Miami Dolphins in 2020. At Georgia, he was named to the Coaches’ Freshman All-SEC Team in 2017 and was a member of teams that won 11 or more games for three straight years.

Kindley played in 29 games with 15 starts over his two years with the Dolphins. As a rookie, Kindley started 13 games and played in 16 games, started two last year all at the guard positions.

This moves come on the heels of the Nick Gates returning to practice from the PUP list. Gates is making his comeback from a devastating leg fracture suffered last September.

Gates now has a 21-way day window to practice with the team. After 21 days, he must either be added to the active roster, revert to injured reserve for the remainder of the season or be released.

Giants worked out Jake Fromm, AJ McCarron and 6 others

The New York Giants worked out eight players over the past two days, including quarterbacks Jake Fromm and AJ McCarron.

From Monday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon, the New York Giants held a series of workouts and visits. Among those in attendance was the team’s former safety, Landon Collins.

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was also in town, although he was not visiting on any official NFL business.

With Daniel Jones (ankle) and Tyrod Taylor (concussion) both injured, the Giants also hosted a slew of quarterbacks on a tryout basis, just as head coach Brian Daboll said they would.

The group, led by ex-Giant Jake Fromm, also included former Alabama standout AJ McCarron and another former Giant, Brian Lewerke.

Fromm famously took over for an injured Jones and veteran Mike Glennon last season in a game that saw him run back-to-back quarterback sneaks to clear room for the punter. That decision ultimately cost head coach Joe Judge his job.

But Fromm does have familiarity with both general manager Joe Schoen and the aforementioned Daboll from their time in Buffalo. Lewerke was also in East Rutherford when that duo took over earlier this year, but was ultimately waived in mid-May.

In addition to the quarterbacks, the Giants also had wide receivers Victor Bolden and Jontre Kirklin, guard Solomon Kindley, and linebacker Ulysees Gilbert in for workouts.

None of the players were immediately signed to a contract but that may change on Wednesday. The Giants may also circle back on Collins once their forced roster shuffling comes to an end.

Giants hosting Landon Collins for visit, Solomon Kindley for workout

The Giants might be on the verge of reuniting with an old friend, safety Landon Collins.

Are the New York Giants and former All-Pro safety Landon Collins headed for a reunion? Could be — Collins is reportedly meeting with Big Blue on Monday.

The news comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Collins, still just 28, was the Giants’ second-round pick out of Alabama back in 2015 and went on to become a first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler for Big Blue.

Collins and the Giants parted ways after the 2018 season and he signed on with Washington, where he continued to be productive for the next three seasons.

His 2020 season was interrupted by a torn Achilles but he rebounded last season to play in 13 games.

Collins could be a perfect fit for the Giants as defensive coordinator Wink Martindale uses his safeties in hybrid linebacker roles. That is essentially what Collins has been his entire career.

He is the prototype box safety and depending on his physical status, he could end up back in Blue very soon. On Sunday, starter Julian Love left the Giants’ game versus the Chicago Bears with a concussion, so there is also a need at safety as well.

Also, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, the Giants are hosting offensive lineman Solomon Kindley for a workout. Kindley is a former fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2020.

Dolphins to release OL Solomon Kindley

Miami moves on from a depth offensive lineman.

The NFL’s deadline to cut rosters down to 53 players is Tuesday at 4 p.m., so the Miami Dolphins, like every other team, are making moves to get there.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, the Dolphins are releasing offensive lineman Solomon Kindley.

Kindley was drafted in the fourth round by Miami back in 2020 out of Georgia. He was a starter as a rookie, but he lost his job in 2021 as they shuffled the line around.

Throughout this preseason, Kindley actually looked decent despite a switch to a scheme that didn’t seem to fit his skill set. If he doesn’t find a home elsewhere, it might be a good idea to try and get him back on the practice squad.

Be sure to keep up with all of Miami’s roster moves via the cutdown tracker.

2022 Dolphins positional preview: The offensive line is improved, but there are still questions

There are still two questionable spots.

The 2021 edition of the Miami Dolphins got one of the worst offensive line performances among all of the teams in the NFL.

Between inexperienced coaches and poor effort, the line wasn’t able to protect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or get any push for the team’s running game. As a result, the offense struggled to string drives together, keeping them from a postseason birth for the fifth straight season.

With the Dolphins ready to hit the field for training camp near the end of the month, it’s as good of a time as any to assess the roster. We’ve touched on quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends, so, today, we’re focusing on the big men up front.
