Dolphins make slew of roster moves to get down to 85 players

There were no surprises cuts in this round.

On Tuesday, all 32 teams have to get their rosters down from 90 players to 85 by the 4 p.m. ET deadline, and the Miami Dolphins did so early on Tuesday despite adding players on Monday.

To get down to 85 players, the Dolphins announced that they’ve waived center Cole Banwart, wide receiver DeVonte Dedmon and defensive lineman Jordan Williams. They also placed tight end Adam Shaheen on injured reserve and waived/injured cornerback Tino Ellis.

Banwart was a long shot to make the team with Adam Pankey getting more opportunities than him as the third center, and Michael Deiter returning healthy to practice last week.

Dedmon was brought in mostly for his return abilities in the CFL, but Lynn Bowden Jr. and Preston Williams did that during the preseason game, and Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have solid resumes in that area as well.

Jordan Williams, a rookie undrafted free agent, only got 10 snaps on Saturday, and other defensive linemen proved more than he did with their opportunities.

Shaheen was traded to the Houston Texans just over a week ago, but a knee condition voided the trade and sent him back to Miami. It’s interesting that they’re keeping him on injured reserve rather than flat-out releasing him, as Shaheen is in the last year of his deal.

Ellis, who was signed just a few weeks back, was waived but with an injury designation, so if he goes unclaimed he’ll revert back to Miami’s injured reserve. He went down during the preseason opener with a lower-body injury.

Dolphins work out three centers on Sunday

Some potential depth options for Miami.

It’s been widely known that Connor Williams is planning to be the starting center for the Miami Dolphins when the regular season starts, but at this point, there’s not much behind him.

Last year’s starting center, Michael Deiter, is dealing with a foot injury that’s kept him out of practice, leaving Cole Banwart and Adam Pankey as the only players taking reps behind Williams in the middle.

On Sunday, the Dolphins worked out three centers – Cohl Cabral, Jake Lacina and Cole Toner, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. This follows a practice in which Pankey had a few poor snaps and while Williams has been struggling that department as well, they can’t have multiple players failing to get the ball to the quarterback.

Cabral was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and has bounced around to the Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints since then. He has yet to play in a regular season game.

Lacina spent the spring in the USFL, playing for the New Jersey Generals. He was part of an offensive line that helped gain the most yards on the ground per game (160.6) in the league. In the NFL, Lacina was once on the Vikings, but he’s never played in a game.

Toner may be the most familiar name of the group, considering he was a fifth-round selection back in 2016 out of Harvard. Originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals, Toner spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots during his first two seasons before finding a landing spot with the Los Angeles Chargers for three years. He spent last season with the Houston Texans and has played in 13 NFL games, starting three of them.

2022 Dolphins positional preview: The offensive line is improved, but there are still questions

There are still two questionable spots.

The 2021 edition of the Miami Dolphins got one of the worst offensive line performances among all of the teams in the NFL.

Between inexperienced coaches and poor effort, the line wasn’t able to protect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or get any push for the team’s running game. As a result, the offense struggled to string drives together, keeping them from a postseason birth for the fifth straight season.

With the Dolphins ready to hit the field for training camp near the end of the month, it’s as good of a time as any to assess the roster. We’ve touched on quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends, so, today, we’re focusing on the big men up front.

Dolphins waive UDFA with failed physical, sign second-year OL

The Dolphins continued to make roster moves during rookie minicamp.

Over the weekend, the Miami Dolphins held rookie minicamp for their first-year players as well as a number of guys who were trying out for the team.

Before the three days of training started, the team announced that they had signed 14 undrafted free agents, including center Ty Clary. However, on Saturday, Miami waived Clary due to a failed physical and signed second-year offensive lineman Cole Banwart to fill his spot on the roster.

Banwart went undrafted in 2021 after a collegiate career at Iowa where he earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans following the draft but was cut at the start of the season. He also spent time with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings’ practice squads during his rookie season.

With Clary having potentially been in the battle for the backup center spot, Banwart could get some looks there.

The New York Giants will be without starting left tackle Andrew Thomas for at least three weeks after he was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Thomas, who had already been dealing with a foot injury, got rolled up on during Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He left the game and was later diagnosed with an ankle injury on the opposite leg of his foot injury.

In addition to Thomas landing on IR, the Giants also placed starting kick returner C.J. Board on injured reserve after he suffered a fracture forearm in the same game.

Thomas and Board become the latest in a long, long line of Giants landing on IR or missing significant time due to injury.

Replacing Thomas and Board on the 53-man roster are wide receiver Dante Pettis and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, each of whom were signed off the practice squad.

Both Pettis and Cunningham had been elevated last week and made their on-field regular season debut.

Meanwhile, the Giants terminated the practice squad contracts of tight end Jake Hausmann and guard Cole Banwart.

With several spots open on the practice squad as a result of the roster shuffle, the Giants also officially signed linebacker Benardrick McKinney, wide receiver Travis Toivonen and offensive tackle Derrick Kelly to the reserve unit.
