Vikings sign TE Muse, release DT Day from practice squad

Former seventh-round pick makes his way back to the practice squad

The Minnesota Vikings needed to make room for both tight end Irv Smith Jr. and defensive end Jonathan Bullard on the active roster, which they did officially on Saturday afternoon. To do so, they needed to waive tight end Nick Muse.

On Saturday afternoon, they brought their seventh-round pick Muse back to the roster by signing him to the practice squad. To make room for him, the Vikings released defensive tackle Sheldon Day from the practice squad.

Muse has played in 10 games this season for the Vikings but hasn’t gotten a single snap on offense. He has seen 108 of them on special teams this season and the Vikings didn’t need to have four tight ends on the roster. He got his spot on the active roster due to the high ankle sprain that Smith Jr. suffered in week eight against the Arizona Cardinals.

Day signed with the Vikings practice squad the same day that they placed left tackle Blake Brandel on injured reserve. They had interest for a while, as they hosted him for a visit a month earlier on November 15th.

Report: Sheldon Day released as part of first cut

According to a report, Day will be a part of the first five roster moves that should also include two centers going on injured reserve:

The Cleveland Browns have a couple of ways to get down to 85 players by the close of business today. They already waived WR Derrick Dillon on Monday. Rookie center Dawson Deaton tore his ACL and should be placed on injured reserve today and starting center Nick Harris is expected to miss the season as well.

If both centers are placed on injured reserve, the Browns will only need to reduce the roster by two more players. Early roster cuts are likely to be focused more on health, or lack of, especially at certain positions.

According to a report by Brad Stainbrook of The OBR, DT Sheldon Day will be one of those two moves:

Day has been dealing with a back injury this offseason and struggled to get on the field. While Cleveland lacks proven starters on the interior of the defensive line, the team does have a variety of younger players at the position.

In 2021, Day played in seven games for the Browns with 21 tackles and one sack. He has accumulated seven sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 14 tackles for loss in his 67 career games spanning three different teams.

Cleveland will be required to get their roster to 85 by Tuesday afternoon. We will cover those moves as they come today.

Browns make flurry of moves ahead of training camp opening

Five players, including Ward, were added to different injury/illness lists as players report to camp today:

The Cleveland Browns are still waiting for a resolution to QB Deshaun Watson’s disciplinary hearing. There is no certainty that the resolution will come anytime soon but the league calendar marches on.

The Browns quarterbacks and rookies reported to Berea last week with the rest of the team joining them by today. When the rookies reported, WR David Bell was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after his physical.

With Cleveland’s roster full of talented players, there should be high hopes if everyone can stay healthy. While not everyone agrees, the Browns should be playoff contenders as long as Watson is able to play at least half of the games this year.

Keeping everyone healthy will be the key. With the rest of the team arriving and going through their physicals, Cleveland placed five players on different lists today due to injuries or illness:

Browns sign DE Stephen Weatherly, bring back DT Sheldon Day and 2 others

Weatherly spent most of his first 6 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings

On a day where the Denzel Ward contract extension grabbed the Cleveland headlines, the Browns quietly restocked the roster with one new free agent signing and bringing back three others from the 2021 squad.

The newcomer is defensive end Stephen Weatherly, who finished the 2021 campaign with the Denver Broncos. Weatherly, 28, has spent most of his six-year NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. He played for the Vikings when Browns coach Kevin Stefanski was running the Minnesota offense. The 6-5, 262-pound Weatherly also played one year (2020) with the Carolina Panthers.

The most prominent re-signing player is defensive tackle Sheldon Day. He’s joined by WR Ja’Marcus Bradley and OL Michael Dunn, who were exclusive rights free agents (ERFA) who signed their contract tender offers on Monday.

Day played in seven games, starting one, in his first season in Cleveland. He didn’t initially make the Browns despite a strong preseason and training camp, but the 28-year-old Day joined Cleveland in November and played well enough down the stretch to return. He was an unrestricted free agent.

Browns sign Alex Taylor from practice squad among several roster moves

Taylor is back on the active 53-man roster and he’s joined by a pair of practice squad elevations

Facing a rash of injuries heading into Sunday’s visit from the Arizona Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns bolstered the roster with some personnel moves on Saturday.

The most notable move is signing offensive tackle Alex Taylor from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster. Taylor rejoined the Browns practice squad after a stint with the Bears on Chicago’s practice squad this season. The 6-foot-8 Taylor spent 2020 with the Browns as an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina State, playing in one game.

Taylor will help as insurance for the Browns at tackle, where starters Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin are among 10 players questionable for the Week 6 game. Regular backup tackle Chris Hubbard went on injured reserve this week.

The Browns also elevated two players from the practice squad for Sunday. Defensive lineman Sheldon Day and cornerback Herb Miller received the standard elevation to help with potential depth issues. Day stood out in the preseason and has several years of NFL experience. Both Day and Miller will revert to the practice squad after the game.

Cleveland also waived tight end Connor Davis from the team’s injured reserve list.

One move the team didn’t make: Jarvis Landry remains on the IR. He will not be activated for Week 6 despite being designated for return earlier in the week and practicing with the team.

Browns to cut former Notre Dame star defender

Does Day get the praise he’s worthy of for his Notre Dame career?

Yet another former Notre Dame standout was cut Tuesday as the Cleveland Browns released defensive tackle Sheldon Day.

Day played four games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, recording a pair of tackles and defending a pass.

Day was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars where he spent 2016 and part of 2017 before being waived and eventually claimed by the San Francisco 49ers where he remained through the 2019 season and appeared in Super Bowl LIV.

Day starred at Notre Dame from 2012-2015 and he recorded an impressive 15.5 tackles for loss as a senior.

Browns sign DT Sheldon Day, TE Stephen Carlson

Carlson is back for a third season in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns made a big splash on the transaction wire on Wednesday by signing free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year contract. But Clowney isn’t the only player with whom the Browns did business.

Cleveland signed free agent DT Sheldon Day and TE Stephen Carlson to deals. Both ended the 2020 season with the Browns.

Day was on the team’s practice squad after signing with the team late in the season. He last played for the Indianapolis Colts. Day has five seasons of NFL experience.

Carlson was an exclusive rights free agent who the Browns tendered earlier this offseason. The tight end signed his offer, locking him in for 2021. He has six catches in his two seasons in Cleveland while also playing over 80 percent of the team’s reps on special teams in 2020.

Colts activate DE Kemoko Turay from PUP list, waive DT Sheldon Day

Kemoko Turay is officially back.

The Indianapolis Colts activated defensive end Kemoko Turay from the reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP) and waived defensive tackle Sheldon Day, the team announced Tuesday.

This is just a formality as Turay was expected to be activated this week. With the activation, Turay seems to be in line to make his debut against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11, though it remains to be seen if the Colts will give him a full workload upon return.

The Colts still see the bendy and explosive player that flashed in 2019 before a season-ending ankle injury, which is encouraging for what this front seven can become.

It was a bit of a surprise that Day was waived. However, he hadn’t seen much playing time since returning from the injured reserve list. With Grover Stewart emerging as an elite run defender and Taylor Stallworth outplaying him, Day’s time with the Colts was limited.

The Colts signed Day to a one-year deal in free agency this offseason.

4 ‘close contact’ Colts return to practice on Friday

Colts dodge a bullet on the COVID-19 front.

After the Indianapolis Colts learned of a staff member testing positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, four players were considered to be “close contacts” and had to sit out the walkthrough until they tested negative for the virus.

It seems all is well on that front as the four players who were deemed close contacts via contact tracing will be returning to practice on Friday. This means all four players have passed additional testing without any issues.

The four players considered close contacts were left guard Quenton Nelson, wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and defensive tackles Tyquan Lewis and Sheldon Day.

The Colts seemed to have dodged a bullet on the COVID-19 front. Because these players weren’t considered “high risk close contacts,” they only had to re-test negative for COVID-19. This differs from the situation with the Ravens, who have six players considered high risk. They have to have five consecutive days without testing positive in order to return.

The Colts will be back at practice after conducting a walkthrough on Thursday as they prepare for the Week 9 home matchup against the Ravens.
